are there instances of women becoming obsessed with historic events? definitely a male preoccupation with certain phases of history (Civil War, Nazis, Hitler) & reenactments of battles. women may obsess over reading, music & dance, kitties, doggies, clothes, gardening, men.
always wanted school on my birthday, and on my 28th birthday I had the privilege of successfully defending my doctoral dissertation! PhDid, PhDone. no words for everyone who supported me along the way- too many to thank here, but you know who you are 🥰
at bar with husband and friend in Arlington —
random dude approaches: “were you at the Archives today?”
me: “yes…”
~conversation ensues~
dude: “what’re you researching?”
me: “Frances Perkins”
dude: “I’ll look him up”

today's college students were in elementary school during Sandy Hook and high school during Parkland. mass shootings are part of their understanding of what can happen at school. make it stop
🚨NEW🚨 My investigation of Michael Kors, Kate Spade and Vera Bradley's supply chains and a reminder that racism does not end at the US’ borders. It leaches into war, reproductive healthcare, and work—including the way fashion workers are treated in Asia
"I wonder if someone in the audience of William Henry Harrison's Inaugural also got pneumonia & died, and we just never heard about them" -tenth grader
just sent my dissertation to my committee! 🍾
I think this is when one tweets the table of contents? considering my title page has been my prof pic for a ~month
Stamp Act activity:
me: "close your devices, put away your notes, take out your phones"
11th graders: 🤨
me: "work in pairs to make a list of everything you do on your phone"
then, cross check purposes of phone with clauses & lines from Stamp Act
ecstatic to share that I’m a Cokie Roberts fellow 2023! deeply thankful to
@archivesfdn
for supporting my book project. the fellowship aligns w/ my values of women’s history, federal history, accessible writing, & the legacy of Cokie Roberts
Archives staff: excuse me, ma'am, are you a college student?
me: no.
Archives staff: ...
Archives staff: I was thinking that only a college student would dress that casual.
me: I don't think that's a compliment.
Archives staff: hahaha
Tom from reference kept using he/him pronouns for FP. I told him she was 1st woman in the Cabinet. he said he didn’t care, “not important,” he’s “happy for her mother,” that she was “gender confused,” he “went to college along time ago.” no reference help I guess
@USNatArchives
I've long referred to Benjamin Franklin as the Flat Stanley of Early America, and then today a junior introduced Flat Franklin to my classroom 🤣
#amteaching
me: so what's the score
husband: shut up
me: 🥺
husband: oh you were actually asking? thought you were mocking me
(so I guess
@Nationals
are beating
@Mets
then 😊🥳)
below is a bad and dangerous take. the origin of sources and people behind historical content are both part of the story, part of the narrative. especially when discussing the marginalized and minorities
today's my first official day of full-time employment. I guess every day is the first day of the rest of your life, but this one really feels like it ☕️💕✨
the university where I earned my masters and doctorate just emailed me to request verification of my masters and doctorate before I adjunct- I replied asking which of their offices should I ask. they called me prof Graham so I’m not mad

🚨📖DEAR MISS PERKINS: A Story of Frances Perkins’s Efforts to Aid Refugees from Nazi Germany has a publication date: January 21, 2025, the day after the presidential inauguration 🤯
my 81yr-old Jewish grandmother (Rhode Island) and husband’s 80yr-old Jewish grandmother (Florida) each sent us the same card (again) — not the first time this happened 🥰
my colleague had 2 trash cans while I had none. today 10 eleventh graders silently marched from my classroom to hers, stole her trash can, and analyzed this in terms of empire.
me: hey haven't seen you in a while
prof: are you married now?
me: yes!
prof: congrats!
me: thanks!
prof: you look good! did you lose weight?
me: ...I don't think so
prof: you look slender
me: ~retreats around corner~
prof: married life is treating you well
^wrong in many ways
last year I treated myself to psychological testing for my 30th birthday. I’m autistic and ADHD, & the months since my diagnoses have been what some call an “unmasking journey,” learning to be myself, neurodivergent in a world that can be hard. (1/5)

my dad: no I just mean it’s sad
although I expected prejudice toward me, tbh I was surprised by the indignant refusal of Tom from Reference to acknowledge that Frances Perkins was a woman she/her. I hope that

I’ve been clapping back at the critics more than usual because I genuinely think that our collective argument against the fetishization of side-hustling is bullet-proof.
I just tested positive for covid.
I blame myself for being burnt out/run down and also everyone who pretends that the pandemic ended.
let’s care for each other and especially ourselves ❤️🩹
just submitted my article manuscript to a peer-reviewed print journal for the 1st time. I genuinely believe that the content should be published... fingers crossed! gonna celebrate by bringing the remaining edible cookie dough to my department's fridge...

for soliciting this essay about a story that unfolded during my first week of summer. now I’m back in my classroom nostalgic for research/writing adventures & thankful to everyone who helped
a few days ago my mom asked me to pick a Bethesda restaurant for night before PhD graduation. I picked one, and she didn’t respond. days later/tonight she texted me choice of 3 other Bethesda restaurants that she’d prefer
just submitted my first-ever chapter draft for an edited volume. I'm delighted that a classroom conversation influenced the idea, and I also used my research for the chapter in the classroom last week. won't be in print for a while, so always must celebrate small victories
sorry if my word count updates seem out of touch. I'm a bit desensitized tbh. s/o to my fellow grad students who've grad-schooled through the Trump administration & dissertated through a pandemic
WOAH I missed a LOT on academic Twitter this morning 😳
are academic/public history, misogyny, Israel/Palestine, & the editor who unfollowed me years ago for slightly disagreeing w/ him all part of the same story?!
tonight after Shabbat, I wrote (including some re-writing) 2947 words of introduction to my diss, within a document labeled "And now that you don't have to be perfect" (you can be good) 💕

at outdoor restaurant with fellow grad students I uttered the phrase "publish AND perish," and an older guy/Econ PhD at the adjacent table started laughing 😂
I keep thinking of how when Lincoln died on Passover + Shabbat, Jewish leaders traveled to DC to say Kaddish for someone who wasn’t Jewish for first time in U.S.
RBG died on Rosh Hashanah + Shabbat, & diverse crowds — regardless of backgrounds — honored her w/ mourners Kaddish

abortions are okay no matter what.
here’s what makes me emotional: my two favorite people my baby siblings are alive because my mom was able to abort the third baby, who had a heartbeat but no brain, and was depriving them of nutrients
