For the first time @ChaseBrownstein et al finds an intrinsic mechanism for low species diversity and relatively slow phenotypic evolution in a lineage of living fossils. Darwin highlighted gars when introducing this concept in On the Origin of Species (1859).

The new AFS names of North American fishes list just dropped. Big changes! Allohistium and Nothonotus listed as genera of Percidae. Micropterus salmoides is the recongnized scientific name for Florida Bass and Micropterus nigricans is the name for Largemouth Bass.

Flattered, our ray-fin classification monograph was written up as a news item in Science We are not the first molecular phylogeny nor the first to suggest parrotfishes are nested in Labridae. “When the legend becomes fact, print the legend.” Such is life!
