OMGar IT’s HERE!!! My gar story is in the latest issue
@RangerRickMags
!!!
The nature magazine that introduced me to gars 30 years ago comes full circle, hopefully sparking interest in a new group of kids!
Cameos from

too!
I’M SO HAPPY!!!
🦀Estimated 1 BILLION crabs have mysteriously disappeared, a 90% drop in population
🦀Alaska has canceled winter snow crab season in the Bering Sea for first time in history
🦀 Climate connection: canary in coal mine for other cold water species
Apparently it’s National American Paddlefish Day, so here’s my video of these crazy critters screaming— I mean filtering food from the water with their mouth agape!
TFW a wildlife TV/YouTube host says they “discovered” something you’ve studied for over a decade.
Hybrid gars aren’t newly-documented, and I helped develop “crocodile gar” types over 15 years ago. I’ve reached out
@COYOTEPETERSON
@AnimalPlanet
to help👍
Australian Lungfish BOOP!
I love lungfishes; among the largest genomes of any animal. They’re more closely related to us (tetrapods) than they are to salmon, bass, or any other fish!
STUNNING (in the skin-crawling sort of way) attack by cookie cutter sharks on a swordfish!

Have you ever seen Paddlefish eat?
Concentrated electroreceptors in their snout (aka rostrum) help them detect plankton and other small prey.
They swim with mouths wide open, filtering prey out of the water using fine gill rakers like a sieve!🐟
Amazing colors on this Orangethroat Darter, a small freshwater fish* that lives in North American streams!

BUCKET LIST item achieved!!!
I finally got to see a WILD VENUS FLYTRAP!!!🪰🪤🌱🍽️
I’ve been a fan of these carnivorous plants since elementary school, and this is one of the only places in the world where native Venus flytraps grow!
YAAAWN🥱🐟
Check out those teeth! At only 6 weeks old, baby Alligator Gar have well-developed teeth and are proficient at catching fish!
*and yes, fish yawn!
Buffalo are native (US) species and can live for over 100 years.
Here’s a 70-pound female that won bowfishers “big fish” at a national tournament hosted
@BassProShops
. Note the puddle of eggs.
These fish aren’t eaten, at best ➡️landfill.

I study the ecology and conservation of gars and other “ancient” fishes!
GOLDEN GAR!!! Check out this very rare xanthic Florida Gar found by fellow fish head M.Drawdy!
“Gold” appearance is caused by genetic condition resulting in excess yellow-orange pigment (similar to commercial Goldfish)🐟
OK
@MdBreathe
, gar scientist here, Alligator Gar is a fish not a reptile 🫠🤦♂️
Stick with recommending ivermectin for COVID and anti-vax rhetoric. Oh wait don’t do that either 🙃
My Mom received the COVID vaccine today and I’m SO HAPPY to hear it (we all need good news these days).
She’s been a medical technologist since before I was born, and has continued to work during the pandemic (also processing Covid samples). 😭❤️
If you’ve never seen Paddlefish eat, you’re in for a treat!
They swim with mouths wide open, filtering plankton out of the water using fine gill rakers like a sieve. Those long snouts are packed with electroreceptors to help them find their food!
Our 1.5-year old son has COVID and this tweet cannot contain even a FRACTION of my rage.
*and absolute disgust for the PATHETIC rate of vaccination/masking in our town, region, state, whatever. CHILDREN are paying the price for your idiocy and selfishness.
YOU SEE I'M AN INVASIVE SPECIES AND YOU'RE A NATIVE SPECIES BUT WE'RE OFTEN BOTH CONSIDERED INVASIVE.
HOPEFULLY THINGS WILL CHANGE AS PEOPLE LEARN MORE ABOUT FRESHWATER FISH. IN FACT, NEW RESEARCH SHOWS YOUR SPECIES CAN LIVE FOR 127 YEARS!!!
From the mouth of the Mississippi River to the headwaters! Excited to share that our family will be returning to the Midwest where I’ll be joining the University of Minnesota

@TheGarLab
will continue, with new native fish conservation work too!
No good reason to shoot a fish like this other than you want to kill something big.
Although legal, this 7’5” long, 240 lb Alligator Gar was bowfished so it could be mounted on a wall. These giants can live +100 years, how long is this waste sustainable?
The LUNGFISH [Genome] HAS LANDED!!!
Australian Lungfish has LARGEST animal genome sequenced to date; 43 BILLION base pairs long; 14x larger than human’s!
Learn more about water-land transition, why tetrapods are all FISH!

Stay tuned for how to get one AND support diversity, equity, and inclusion👍
*yes, I specifically chose the FLORIDA Gar😎
Today we’re talking conservation of gars & other long-lived freshwater fishes, and they need our help!
#GarWeek
Did you know Alligator Gar can live for 100 years??? Even the smallest gar can live for decades! Stay tuned for Buffalo, Bowfin, Paddlefish & more w/

Hey
@OKWildlifeDept
does this mass killing of native species look like good stewardship of our natural resources? We NEED bowfishing regulations to protect native fishes!
CONSERVATION WIN!!!
Social media outcry over wasteful killing of native species contributed to POLICY & MANAGEMENT CHANGE! Minnesota is set to be among first states to set harvest limits for gar!

FRIENDS,
We are dedicating this year’s
#GarWeek
to the late Mark Spitzer, who we lost to cancer earlier this year (age 57).
Mark was an amazing person, talented author & poet, friend, true champion of under-appreciated fishes. An OG gar conservationist.
And if you’ve never seen Paddlefish eat, here you go:
^Paddlefish use that long snout (laced with electroreceptors) to detect plankton, then filter them out of water with their gaping mouths & sieve-like gill rakers!
#46
A living fossil, the American paddlefish is the only member of its family left on Earth. With its undeveloped eyes, it relies on thousands of electroreceptors along its snout to search for prey & navigate.

Recognizing my Mom for
#InternationalWomansDay
She immigrated here from India and worked tirelessly to support our family, but still took time to learn dinosaur names with me as a kid...eventually leading to dinosaur fishes! Thanks for your neverending support!
