This is a must watch video! At 9:40 this morning Firefighter Armstrong from Engine 15 rescued Watson the golden retriever from an ice-covered pond along the Big Dry Creek Trail in Centennial – The same spot where a woman and her dog were rescued by SMFR just 5 days ago.
Watch 90 seconds through the eyes South Metro Firefighters tonight as they arrived at the 2nd Alarm fire in Lone Tree. Their goal, control the fire as quickly as possible to protect lives and property. This is the reason they train so hard from their first day until they retire.
Update - Great news to report, all forward progress of the fire toward the subdivision has been stopped. There’s still a lot work to be done containing the flanks and smoke will continue to drift into Highlands Ranch. No structures damaged and no injuries.

“Bri” is one lucky pup. The crew from Firehouse 34 was quick to arrive with a rescuer already dressed in a dry suit. The team on shore held his safety rope tightly and the Dive Team was also responding, just in case. All SMFR fire engines are equipped for ice rescues.

Daisy had a ruff morning after escaping from her backyard in Douglas County. She got stuck in an icy pond and her humans did the right thing by calling 911 and remaining on shore. Thankfully this muddy tail has a happy ending and Firefighter Bradberry gets a round of a-paws.
This little Castle Pines resident needed help and found it inside the garage at Fire Station 39. It’s beak was wrapped with debris, it’s eyes wouldn’t open and it couldn’t fly. Firefighters cleaned it off, served it sugar water and after 15 minutes the hummingbird flew away!
(2) At the young age of only 31 years old, Cody was taken from this world too soon. Firefighter Mooney leaves behind a beautiful family including his wife (who is expecting their fifth child in just a few weeks), as well as their other four children.
Called to a possible medical emergency today, the crew at Firehouse 23 in Centennial found an elderly couple who didn’t need a trip to the hospital but did need some extra help. Firefighters made them chicken noodle soup and shoveled their driveway before their family drove over.
🐥🦆We all need a little helping hand once in awhile. This mama quacked for help and the crew from Tower 35 were happy to reunite her and her babies. A feel good story and “tweet” for the day. 🐥❤️

Firefighters at Station 40 (near Highway 85 and Titan) spotted this Colorado resident enjoying the sunrise from their parking lot today. Typically they welcome visitors to tour the firehouse, but no introductions were made this time.

It’s not your average emergency vehicle... SMFR’s Snowcat got some exercise during driver training in Parker today. This unit is used during blizzards or very heavy snowfall to access emergency incidents when fire engines and ambulances can’t make it.

The next call for Engine 44, high winds blew a fence into a natural gas meter and broke the line at a home in Parker. The crew ensured they had a water supply in case it ignited and quickly shut off the line. House checked clear, no injuries, ready for the next emergency now.

SMFR is proud to announce the opening of Station 20, located at 1801 E. Wildcat Reserve Pkwy. The brand new fire station enhances fire & emergency medical response in Highlands Ranch and Douglas County. Firefighters moved in this morning and already responded to their first call.
Around 8:00 Engine 33 helped 6 of Centennial’s newest residents to safety after they fell into a storm drain at S. Jersey St. & E. Irish Pl. Firefighters used a variety of techniques including the sound of ducklings on YouTube to call one frightened straggler out of a pipe!

SMFR is on scene of a large trash fire on the west side of 1745 Shea Center Dr. in Highlands Ranch. The fire started in a garbage truck and the driver dumped the contents into this open lot to save the truck. No structures threatened and no injuries.
Happy to be warm and dry, this lucky pup was just rescued from the icy water at Arapahoe Lake in the 10000 blk of East Maplewood Ave. We don’t know where his humans are so Firefighters are transporting him by ambulance to a local animal hospital for evaluation.
South Metro Firefighters successfuly rescued a horse trapped upside down in a ditch near Parker this afternoon. Vets provided medical treatment while SMFR built a mechanical rescue system. The operation took about 90 minutes, the horse stood on her own and is being rehydrated.

With great sadness, South Metro Fire Rescue announces the Line of Duty Death of former Assistant Chief of Operations Troy Jackson who passed away peacefully this morning from adenoid cystic carcinoma, a rare job-related cancer.
The cat was placed in a pet carrier and kept inside a safe, warm vehicle for the duration of the incident. He was transported to the Dumb Friends League Buddy Center in Castle Rock where he’s probably busy assisting their staff with caring for other animals.
Video captured Sunday afternoon shows the intense conditions South Metro Firefighters encountered at a house fire. While flames were being extinguished, aggressive interior searches occurred. No people were home at the time but 3 pets were rescued and thankfully they're doing ok!

South Metro approved an immediate need mutual aid request to send a wildland deployment team to the

in Grand County for 24 to 48 hours. The crew deployed from SMFR’s district this afternoon.
South Metro is responding to dozens of calls in Highlands Ranch south of c470 between Lucent and Quebec for storm related damage including roof damage, trees down, natural gas leaks and electrical problems. No reports of any injuries so far.
He got in the back of an ambulance, but Paramedic Firefighters had more medical training and the patient didn’t need feline support. His next idea was to drive the ambulance to the hospital, and while the Chief did enjoy that suggestion, driving probably wasn’t the best idea…
The good news - This fire is 100% contained.
The bad news - Illegal fireworks use continues to increase.
Fire investigators are on scene working to determine what sparked this fire. We ask the community to please help us by preventing any more fires from happening.
This morning the SMFR Honor Guard escorted Chief Jackson from UCHealth Highlands Ranch Hospital to Crown Hill Mortuary. Firefighters are there providing honor watch 24 hours a day until his funeral. Thank you to our community and partner agencies for your outpouring of support.

responded to a deer trapped in a fence near Park Meadows Dr. and Station Way. Firefighters used the jaws of life to quickly free the deer, which sustained non-life-threatening abrasions from struggling.
🦆🆘 A rainy day seems like a weird time to talk about pool safety... but ducklings shouldn’t jump into pools they can’t get out of. Concerned neighbors in Littleton Southbridge called SMFR and the crew of Engine 15 became lifeguards. The ducklings are safe and dry with mom now!
Ohh Deer. A young fawn found itself trapped in the basement foundation of a home under construction in southeast Aurora this evening. Neighbors called on their 3 off-duty fire rescue neighbors, including members of SMFR, to lend a helping hand.

No growth overnight, still 100% contained. Firefighters patrolled all night and encountered very quiet conditions. They used several hundred gallons of water on hot spots within the burn area. Additional crews will be working on extinguishment today.
Around 11 a.m. SMFR helped a Labradoodle who having was having a bad morning. The dog fell through the ice into a couple feet of muddy water at Valley County Club and couldn’t get out. A Firefighter wearing a drysuit quickly rescued and safely reunited the dog with its human.
This is paws-itively awesome. Please drive extra carefully this evening to keep trick or treaters safe. And Hank. Let’s keep Hank safe, too.

Davies Update - Photos show the heavy fire conditions firefighters were faced with when they arrived. The fire is now out and the damage is mostly contained to the garage and exterior. 1 cat was rescued, paramedics performed CPR, she is awake and reunited with her humans.
This was a scene that played out dozens of times overnight. SMFR staffed extra units that plowed the way for Medics and Engines, allowing them safe access to otherwise inaccessible streets. There was also a lot of hand shoveling to get sick or injured people into the Medic units.

This helmet cam video was captured just after 5 p.m. when SMFR responded to a dog rescue in a golf course pond at 8500 Lone Tree Pkwy. A firefighter wearing a drysuit and tethered to his crew on shore broke through the ice and quickly brought the uninjured yellow lab to safety.
Congratulations to Lieutenant Mike Butterfield who celebrated his last shift on Tuesday! We can’t count the number of lives he touched over his 34-year career, but we can look back at one rescue from 30 years ago that made national news.
