I love working with people who are friendly. Who say “thank you” or cheer you on or say “good job.” These things may seem small, but they add up in the same way (but opposite direction) that all the negs and “paper cuts” do. They create a culture. They matter. Kindness matters.

@kaydacode I usually just say something like “Oh thanks for following me! So tell me about yourself.” (Or a more specific question depending on the context where we’re meeting, so if it’s an Accessibility Conf, I might say, “I’d love to hear about how you’re involved in accessibility!”

Tip for testing your iOS app with VoiceOver! If you’re a sighted dev, it can be easy to “cheat” when testing with VO, using visual cues to navigate. I recommend using Screen Curtain to hide your screen so you can really experience your app w/o seeing! Just 3-finger triple tap!

If you haven't tried it yet, check out Settings -> Accessibility -> Live Captions (Beta); this is one of many amazing #a11y features in iOS 16. The feature captions any audio out OR in! Honored to have worked on this and beyond stoked for the team to have shipped it!

Since we’re all looking at Stocks today… In the past years #VoiceOver has started to do cool stuff w charts. You can summarize charts and even play an audio graph! In this video, I’m using 1-finger up/down swipes to go thru all the actions, then double-tap to activate. #a11y

Lesson I wish I'd learned sooner: While it's good to "love" my work, it's important for me to remember that a job will never "love" me back. It's a job. I'm a cog. So instead of putting my "love" into the company, I put it into *what* I'm doing, who it's for, and *why* I do it.

From what I’ve experienced, gatekeepers don’t gate keep because they’re better/smarter/stronger/something-er than you. It’s because they’re afraid you’re better/smarter/stronger/something-er than them. They’re afraid you’re going to shake up a system that puts them on top.

Did you know on iOS you can check if your users want auto-play video? The API isVideoAutoplayEnabled! There are many reasons users may not want videos to autoplay, including: - Motion sensitivity - Distraction management - Risks of triggering content

Want to work on SwiftUI and Widgets? Excited to help define the future of app development? Pumped about shaping API design? Well you're in luck! I have 2 roles open on my team on SwiftUI! Links in thread. Note: these roles are in-office in Cupertino.

Your friendly neighborhood reminder that dispatch queues you create yourself do not drain their own autorelease pools necessarily. :-) This brought to you by 1 hour of debugging weird leaks and retain counts!

Just today I got asked the age old Q, "what's it like to be a woman in tech?" Since I've never lived as a man, it's tough to compare, but I've started answering, "Well one thing is that I get asked this question a lot...so I'm guessing that's quite different." 🤷🏻‍♀️

Back when I worked at 🍎 ~2010, I was late to a circus class so I changed in the work bathroom into my PURPLE LEOTARD & NEON PINK tights. As I ran out of the office I passed Steve Jobs. He stopped cold & just stared at me. When I looked back from the door, he was still staring👀

Having a few months off from work is really showing me how much I actually love living and how utterly exhausted I truly was. My job was amazing, and I wouldn’t change taking it. And still, seeing my interests all return like old friends is bittersweet…they were there all along.
