😡
Four weeks ago I discovered I am still shared on a Google Drive folder of photos my abusive ex controls and is actively putting photos into.
At the same time I learned there is **no way to remove your own access from a folder you have been given view-only access to**.
Old boss said you couldn’t do something? Get that paper.
Broseph stole your ideas and got promoted? Become an expert and start your own company.
Someone doubted you? Make it impossible for them to ignore how great you are.
Be as petty as you want on the inside if that’s what motivates you. Become an expert. Get paid. Dance on the graves of the defining bullshit conversations you’ve had in the past. Help uplift others who have also been told they weren’t good enough.
Would it be great if motivation was pure and sweet because you were inspired by some Pinterest quote? Sure!
Do I go to work sometimes with a fire in my belly cuz some idiot told me I wasn’t technically an engineer? Absolutely.
It’s almost like
traditionally feminine traits
are actually predictors of success
and we should hire for them
and listen to those
who have told us this 🤔
Two rounds of deep analysis of employee performance data at Google show that the top predictors of success are being a good communicator in a team where you feel emotionally safe:
I guarantee you, every URM has some Arya Stark-style list of people who told them they aren’t good enough and they will burn this place to the ground to prove it
This isn’t spite because you think you deserve a thing just because everyone else has it. It’s a direct reaction to being told you’re not good enough by people who didn’t bother to recognize that you were already crushing it
Yesterday on BART I heard one Asian lady engineer give negotiation advice to her friend that was so egregiously wrong, I almost committed a SF atrocity and talked to them
But my stop was next so, in true SF fashion, here’s a tweet thread /1
bUt iTS nOt gOoD fOR yOU tO bE sO nEgATiVE
Listen. This is spite in the face of adversity. When someone says that you don’t have what it takes when you 1000% do. It’s a power up to the motivation I already had to do the thing I was already doing
So there is an error on the
@Instacart
app on a recipe for a feta, olive, and tomato salad recipe where if you click “add items to cart” it adds 16 containers of feta instead of 16oz of feta
When I left my job, I thought I’d be out for a month, tops. “I wouldn’t know what to do with myself,” is what I told people.
It’s been 3 months and I’ve finally started recovering from burnout and enjoying life again. Don’t underestimate how much rest you actually need!
Someone asked me today how I, a female manager, prevent myself from becoming a therapist/caretaker to my team and wow am I excited to write this blog post on boundaries
This weekend was my grandma’s 100th (!) birthday party and when I asked what the covid testing plan was, I heard crickets back. So I went to Walgreens and got everyone an at home test
Because guess who is asking for more? White men.
And if they can ask for more money then so can you
Channel that inner, overly confident white male and ask for what *he* thinks he deserves.
Or ask a white male friend for what he would ask for /8
Disagree. PRs are useful async collaboration tools, good for encapsulating a feature into a single referenceable point, and provides context for people outside the individual writing the code.
In short, it helps your org scale. This sync “trust” model only works for small teams
You need PRs when:
• You don’t trust the code
• You don't trust the person writing the code
• You don’t trust the process used to write the code
• You don’t trust the system used to check in the code
Maybe we should dump the PRs and work on that trust thing instead?
people don't talk about failing at job interviews often enough so here's one of mine:
the year was 2009, and i was looking to move away from front end work to more backend/fullstack work, and i was on the phone with a guy from mozilla
This weekend on staycation, I decided to have a little fun with the
@FourSeasons
concierge and asked for a framed photo of
@TaikaWaititi
. They delivered. Bless the staff for having a wonderful sense of humor and making my day 😂
So please negotiate. Do it for your brosona. Do it for your family. Do it for the rest of us WOC
Because I guarantee you the white dudes are doing it, so why not get what you deserve? /fin
I just gave a Security 101 for Seniors presentation to my mom and 10 of her best girl friends and they had such a great time learning! They’re in their 70s and get bombarded with messages about how everything is hacked and they wanted to be better informed about where to start
Also as a hiring manager I can tell you that you aren’t wasting my money by interviewing. That’s just completely false
Asian women in particular, I feel, are worried about being a “burden” on others. You aren’t! I want you here! I am investing in you & you deserve to be here /10
I find this mentality in a lot of other Asian folk, women especially, that if we work hard enough, we will eventually get rewarded.
NO. THIS DOES NOT WORK. THERE IS A BAMBOO GLASS CEILING FOR A FREAKING REASON /5
The upsetting thing about this is Jessica has been dealing with this for A MONTH and Google Support says it’s a bug but also working as intended
Your software shouldn’t work to enable people to harass others!
Lastly, compounded raises ARE REAL. Raised are PERCENTAGE based on your starting salary
If you don’t negotiate, no matter how much you get after a year, it will still be less than what you could’ve gotten (and likely the dudes in your company already did get) /11
Having a “brosona” comes in handy at times like this because it makes it easier to ask for something you might be hesitant to ask for. What would
@BROSEPHSPEAKS
feel he deserves? Ask for that much /9
If you’re gonna ask for above the salary band, it probably wasn’t a good fit or our expectations are vastly out of alignment. But you should always ALWAYS ask for more. ALWAYS negotiate /7
My team asks, "How can this feature be used to hurt someone?" It's incredibly important that we don't just build features for the sake of disruption - we must build responsibly and making sure to think through abuse vectors and how real humans are impacted by tech
Yesterday I had friends over for a seafood bbq and broke down a king salmon for grilling and sashimi and proceeded to forget to take a single additional photo after this
I was surprised to learn that
@500px
has open DMs by default after a spammer contacted me. I asked to turn it off and was told “maybe the site isn’t for you”. Another example of photo communities being unwelcome and dismissive to women and POC
As a hiring manager I can tell you this: there are salary bands. There’s an expected amount that I can pay you. You can always ask for things like wfh days, stock, or title bumps /6
Are you an underrepresented minority or someone from a non-traditional background looking to get into tech? Come apply to for our apprenticeship program at

The first Asian woman seemed to be interviewing for her first engineering job and didn’t know how to negotiate. She wanted $10k more
Her friend proceeded to talk her out of it because “they spend so much time and money to interview YOU there isn’t much left” /2
4 yrs ago I was unemployed and spent the last of my $ on coding bootcamp
I got rejected 50x by companies and didnt know how I was going to make rent
Then I did a literal elevator pitch to the manager of
@GitHub
’s Community & Safety and nailed it
Happy 4 yr hubberversary to me!
She then said it would be better if her friend DIDNT negotiate because she would have more leverage at her first review - 6 months or a year down the road - because of all the hard work she would have to show /3
@dionnewarwick
Auntie Dionne I love that you are learning and broadening your horizons! (And also throwing shade, let’s be honest) In a time when so many people turn to hate, it’s so wonderful to see you explore new-to-you topics!
One nice thing about using a DLSR for a webcam is I can finally create a custom white balance profile for my skintone and not use the default that comes with most webcam software (which historically struggles with POC skin)
Thread for advanced DSLR webcam settings for POCs!
I’m thinking of putting together a blog post for my 1 year anniversary of becoming a manager and the things I’ve learned like how to measure success, finding support groups, running useful meetings, and learning to trust your team. Would anyone be interested in this?
👀 I'm looking to hire mid-senior engineers to come join me at a stealth startup tackling SaaS pricing insights! We're a WOC-founded and led company out of NYC and remote-first. RTs welcomed!
This blew up unexpectedly. Please believe women/nb/trans/POC when they say something is a problem.
Making things safer for the most vulnerable people on your platform makes it better for everyone (eg better permissions systems = better enterprise software = more $$)
Here's an idea to carry into 2020:
You cannot create or curate a community where everyone is welcome. It's an incoherent, fake goal. It sounds nice but it is categorically impossible. Some people, by their very presence, make a space unsafe and unwelcoming to others.
After 6 years at GitHub, today is my last day! I’m forever grateful for all the amazing people I’ve had the pleasure to meet and work with over the years, and thankful for all the personal and career growth I’ve been able to have
So I’ve been having so much fun building, I forgot to announce that I started as VP of Engineering at a stealth startup!! Can’t wait to show you what we’re building soon 👀
Morale of the story: get yourself some champions of covid testing for events, preferably of different generations. It’s better to be safe than sorry and sometimes you need different tactics for different people
Managers, today’s a great day to check in on your Asian teammates who may be affected by the recent uptick in hate crimes and the knowledge that we will not be able to celebrate Lunar New Year with family
I’ve explained this to two white men tonight, which warrants a thread on the topic:
Well-meaning white people, the inclusion of marginalized voices (LGBT, POC, etc) does NOT mean we are excluding you 1/?
Fellow overachievers: how do you forgive yourself for not living up to your own high expectations 100% of the time?
...do I need to do sprint planning for my own life
The three stages of going through the list of people you follow:
- i follow way too many people
- who is this person again?
- wtf when the hell did you unfollow me i thought we were friends
I greatly appreciate JavaScript tutorials that are like, listen we know you haven’t used this language since jquery was a thing, here’s what you’ve missed
When you’ve had trauma and actively worked on it, you gain a lot of tools to help take a step back and analyze what is happening and what your brain is telling you could happen. You develop playbooks on how to respond to a crisis and how to leverage your support circles
It costs absolutely nothing to let someone have a beautiful, authentic moment and to support them. Not everything has to be about you and your unresolved issues
Today
@chronofnerdia
and
@katfukui
helped me take the! best! new headshots!
I'm really loving using color background paper. Definitely going to do more of these in the future!
Labor Day weekend is the anniversary of my last sexual assault. It’s been 7 years of PTSD and countless hours of therapy since then.
But thanks to therapy, I’m thriving today! I still get panic attacks (had one last week - it’s still 2020 after all) but life’s pretty good now
Twenty min after I chopped off all my hair a drunk straight dude asked me if he could watch me with another woman so I guess I’m living dat authentic queer life now HAPPY PRIDE YALL
You want to hire and retain underrepresented folks? Don’t send them recruiting emails asking them to do your job for you to find “diversity candidates”
It’s hard to describe the rage I feel as a former Trust & Safety professional and seeing people finally paying attention to all the things we warned you would happen if it wasn’t cut off at the source
So I wasn’t going to tweet about this because I have some hang ups about not being seen as “technical” but fuck it
I survived my first week as an engineering manager! Happy Friday!
THINGS YOU NEED TO DO AS AN ADULT (bare minimum edition):
- Wash your whole body. With soap.
- Wash your ass. Get a bidet. Or use baby wipes idk do something.
- Use real deodorant. Someone is lying to you about that crystal!!!
- Floss. Please! Your breath will thank you!
Today is the 6 year anniversary of my last sexual assault. I’m incredibly proud of the growth and healing I’ve done over the years, and wouldn’t have been able to do it without the support of my friends and chosen family. Today I’m happy, confident, and whole 💖
