Afghan refugees in Indonesia live in limbo and are deprived of right to education and health. Some have been living in uncertainty for years, away from their families and loved ones. They need immediate support with resettlement & an end to this limbo.

Crystal Bayat was one of seven women at a protest she helped organize on Independence Day in Afghanistan. Days after the Taliban took over, raising the Afghan flag became an act of resistance. “I am raising the voice of a million women,” she said.
Women & Taliban rule:
1) Reports that only women working in health, education & some relief organizations can go to work. They have been issued strict dress code & are asked 2 be accompanied by male family member. Women in other sectors r forced to stay home, with unclear future
Would we be here today if those at the highest levels of leadership in the country in the past 20 years didn’t indulge in, empower & tolerate corruption & looting of the state? There should be as much anger at the failure of the Afghan political leadership as anything else
Kabul today. The road to healing for millions of us Afghans may be the protests led by brave Afghan women, asking for freedom. Inspired & humbled by their courage.
When Taliban first came to power, my family migrated to Pakistan. My sisters & I went to an Afghan school there, we learned English & my mom continued teaching. That period changed our lives. Pakistan became a refuge for millions of families like us. These deportations must stop.
🇵🇰 Government of Pakistan must continue its historic support for Afghan refugees by enabling them to live with dignity and free from the fear of deportation to Afghanistan where they face persecution by the Taliban. A forced return to Afghanistan could put them at grave risk.
I desperately want to live in a world where WOMEN feel safe & comfortable wearing WHATEVER they choose & our outfits & bodies are not sites of continuous political contestation or basis for claims of religious/cultural superiority. Knowing that concepts like choice are complex.
This ban is stupid, oppressive & another sign of Taliban’s enmity with women. In summer 2010, I traveled from Takhar to Badakhshan, Badakhshan to Jawzjan & Jawzjan to Kabul on my own as I was conducting fieldwork for my thesis. It was nerve-wrecking but also immensely empowering
Heartbreak: conversations with my toddler about going back home, to Kabul. I can hardly hold my tears & tell him yes, we will try to go back. I miss my home with a yearning I have never known before.

Imagine 10s of armed Taliban forcefully entering your home & taking you away at night. Your “crime”: Risking your life every day to speak up for women’s rights, asking for international support for the Afg people. This is what women protesters experienced in Kabul tonight.
What is that feeling called? That feeling of sadness, pain erupting all over, mixed with constant fear and anxiety, a lot of rage, occasional numbness, a heavy burden setting on your chest every morning, nightmares chasing you all night. What is it called? Being Afghan right now?

Jan. Thank you for listening, for solidarity, for taking our stories to the world.
Since 1st Jan, Afghanistan has lost 3 female media workers, 1 female physician, 2 female judges. 4 of these women lived & worked in Ningarhar. 6 professional women lost to targeted attacks before 8th March. Let that sink in. This war is costing us too much. Stop targeted killings
Some ideas on support to Afghanistan:
1) Airport security, clear messaging and coordination. Airport needs to be secured, not just for evacuation of foreigners but with a view to medium, long term to also mediate the current rush that is causing suffering, indignity
It is 9:34 in the morning in Kabul. Four explosions so far. How many of us called loved ones in panic? How many mothers cried like my mom just hearing about another attack? How many people have been harmed? How does Kabul keep breathing with all this pain, anxiety & fear in her?

This is shameful. I am appalled by anyone who calls the evacuation efforts successful. Is suffering, pain, beating, loss of life, missing children, separated families, eligible people left behind, a “success” for you? It did not have to be like this. None of this was inevitable.
An almost empty charter evacuation flight out of Kabul. 1 of 3 planes organized by George and Maria

to get 1,000 Afghans to Uganda. Many were blocked by the US and the Taliban and so the first plane, with 345 seats, only had 50 passengers.
Westerners in positions of influence have asked me: Don't you think that because Afg is a traditional society, life will be "better" for some women under the Taliban? DON'T DARE LOOK AWAY! Life will be worse for ALL Afghan women with Taliban control. Let's have no illusions.

Imagine you are a refugee girl, learning English & math in private courses in Pakistan, dreaming of becoming a scientist, or a refugee woman lawyer, escaping persucation for your work. Now imagine being deported to live under Taliban's gender aparthied. Who will this policy serve?
On Taliban & women rights: important to remain focused on legal rights and next steps for existing legal rights of women. That should be the baseline. Behavior/practice can change overnight & tends to be context specific/varied by province, local “authorities” etc
Today’s news: Two female judges shot and killed in a targeted attack in Kabul. Afghanistan is losing one of its most important gains, its educated & professional cadre, in what seems to be a systematic massacre & the world seems to be just watching. This must stop.

Taliban will make every effort to deny women their fundamental human rights. The world should not look away & or be delusional about this. We have to explore every opportunity & leverage to protect women’s human rights & hold Afg accountable to its international commitments

Taliban talk about desire for peace on Western media meanwhile reports of string of extrajudicial killings by them, forced displacement, cutting communication lines, imposing repressive rules on women & girls. So far we see potential war crimes & gross violations, far from peace.
Thinking of Ukraine. War stole my childhood, my youth & left my country poor & its potential paralyzed. There is no honor in starting & waging wars. People of Ukraine are close to my heart as we are all anxiously watching what is unfolding & praying for peace to prevail.

Why are Taliban arresting the female protestors? Where are they taking the detained? How do we ensure they are not being harassed & tortured? Why are they not released yet? International community met with Taliban de facto authorities yesterday. They MUST ask these questions.
Thread on war & peace in Afghanistan
I was born in 1987. Afghanistan was then suffering from conflict & there were efforts for reconciliation. I delivered our son 10 days ago. In 2019, Afghans are yet to experience sustained periods of peace across the country.
Everyone is killing Afghan civilians and NO ONE is being held accountable. US needs to reflect deeply on its role in Afghanistan, credible reports of civilian harm caused by the international troops, and deliver on accountability & reparations.
"Nine members of one family -- including six children (youngest of them 2-years old) -- were killed in a US drone strike targeting a vehicle in a residential neighborhood of Kabul, a relative of the dead told a local journalist working with CNN."
Every week, someone I know is leaving Afg. This includes human rights defenders, journalists, women’s rights activists, civil society activists. They are the ones who stayed after peaceful protests were blown up, universities were attacked, hospitals were targeted,
Worrying reports of extrajudicial killings & other violations from Balkhab. The lives & livelihoods of civilians must be protected. Taliban are preventing access to information/evidence.
@UNAMAnews
must demand access to Balkhab, Panjshir & other areas of conflict.

The US-Taliban deal will not bring peace to Afg. It will not end d war & bloodshed. It is an important but fragile first step towards political resolution of the current conflict in Af. Peace however, will require much more, from US, our allies, the region & mostly, us Afgs.

3) Women defenders, journalists, prosecutors & judges, local government officials live with fear & uncertainty, many anxious about what the next days/weeks hold as they watch the erasure of women from public & steps for formation of a new, male-led & dominated “government”.
