,women who attend university told me today that they were sent home by the Taliban when they tried to enter their university.Other women who hold office jobs tell me they were sent home too & told they would be replaced by men. This is happening in Herat NOW!

Love seeing so many
#Afghan
women posting photos wearing colourful clothes in response to the black garments at
#Kabul
university yesterday. Here are a few more.
#colorsofafghanistan
These are the faces of two journalists - Nehmatullah, 28, and Taqi, 22 - who were detained, brutally beaten and flogged - one of them for hours - by the Taliban. Both carry severe injuries. The reason? They wanted to do their jobs; they were out in
#Kabul
reporting.
#Afghanistan
Finally made it back to
#Kabul
, after the US force-deported me and a group of journos last week.
Longest drive of my life - it ended up being around 25 hours total from Tashkent, but where there's a will...
#Afghanistan
It’s now been more than six hours that we (11 journalists) have been held by US forces. We’re not even allowed outside; they even denied me saying goodbye to a dear friend just metres away. They constantly change orders. The press is censored.
#kabul
#kabulairpot
#Kabul
evening encounters: a little girl is staring at a Talib who just sat down for a glass of juice.
I wonder about her... her future, her prospects, the opportunities she will have during this new regime.
#Afghanistan
Fereshta, 10 years old. One of the many children working on the streets in
#Kabul
, no matter the weather, sent out to make enough money for her family's dinner. What a burden to carry.
#Afghanistan
Back in
#Kabul
with a group of journalists but the US forces are deporting us - they are forcing us to board a plane out, but all we want is to stay in Kabul.
Who can help? We have two hours…
Back in
#Afghanistan
after a few months.Dynamics on the ground change quickly&frequently. Today feels different than 2 months ago;today's conversations are different. That's why(with rare exceptions)I will continue to report from(and for)Afghanistan only when I am in Afghanistan🙏
"Get out, go back to Panjshir" a Talib told me while I was trying to cover the women's protest. I'm not sure I quite understand? 🤔🤔 I mean I'd like to go to Panjshir but that's still a no-go zone according to the Taliban.
In
#Ghazni
, at a small military sharia court (that used to be a women’s garden/bazaar&recently turned into the court) where we tried to speak to the judge-dressed like this. A Taliban shooed us away b/c we’re women, then said, “we don’t speak to naked women.”
Utterly disgraceful!
One of the nicest things today:going back to my local grocer, supermarket, ice cream shop, apartment etc and having those who work there & know me exclaim "oh,you're still here."While so many left, seeing their familiar faces has been so nice.Yes, I'm here & glad to have returned.❤️
I'm still receiving several e-mails and messages every day from
#Afghans
desperate to leave, desperate to find a way out. Many tell me they are scared, they have lost hope, they have lost direction in life.
This is Nasir from
#Kandahar
. "When I looked at the weather forecast and saw that it would be snowing in
#Kabul
I decided to drive here. I love snow," he told me today, then adding, "please take my photo."
A warm encounter on a cold day.
#Afghanistan
On the way back from Jalalabad, an armed Talib stopped us (our driver, another foreign female journo&me). Both of us women had hijabs, covering even our mouths and noses.
“Next time these women should wear the burqa, because God is angry,”the Talib demanded, addressing our driver.
A little boy lies abandoned at a

hospital.Mum died during birth, father never picked him up.Doctors presume family might not be able to financially provide.
#Afghanistan
has plunged deep into economic crisis;
#Biden
keeping additional $3.5billion of Afghan $ for 9/11 victims.
Some of Kabul's supermarkets (Finest I am looking at you!)are capitalising on the
#coronavirus
crisis.Small(ish) bottles of hand sanitiser now at 700 Afs (almost $10),in a country where some people's monthly income is barely $100.How are people supposed to be coping?
#Afghanistan
Thread 1/4:Spoke to a visiting male journalist who was bragging how easy it was to work throughout
#Afghanistan
;that he had full access to the Taliban, that they were always welcoming, etc
I objected&made clear that if he walked away like this he was only getting half of the story.
THREAD: 1/10
I lived & worked in
#Afghanistan
for 4 years.
I travelled to most provinces; made dear friends; learned the language.
Right now,I can’t go back. Here’s why:
Over the past years, journos working in AF have largely been operating freely. This has drastically changed.
1/2 Several NGOs this week told me that the Taliban is trying to interfere in every aspect of their operations: Taliban telling NGOs who to hire, suggesting their own people, telling them where to work, what % of funds to give to Taliban, demanding lists of staff members...
Victims of today's attack lie on the floor of a
#Kabul
hospital. The woman in the corner, touching the face of one of the girls, covered with a sheet, breaks my heart. Such violence. Such loss. No words.

Snippets of day 2 of

without US forces around.
Markets are busy. Some people are selling their gold as access to cash is still pretty much impossible and desperation rises.
"The gunmen escorted them to their homes and told them not to return to their jobs. Instead, they explained that male relatives could take their place, according to three of the women involved and the bank's manager."

One of the rockets hit a hospital's paediatric ward. A place for children! A newborn baby boy (he's fine!) was in the room next door - this is what he was born into.
They - whoever 'they' are - have lost their mind!
The other day I visited Zarghona High School.Teachers were worried girls grade 7-12 hadn't returned to class yet.“Our wish is for them to return,"they said.Since then, the Taliban has effectively banned edu for girls grade 7-12,only allowing it for boys, not even mentioning girls.
Some commercial flights out of
#Kabul
are allegedly cancelled just so the US can use the runway and airspace for their evacuation flights I am told. This says so much about privilege, priority...
The people who will lose out the most when it comes to
#Biden
's decision to distribute Afgh funds to 9/11 victims:Ordinary
#Afghans
.
No Afghan was involved in 9/11 attacks, yet 20yrs on,they are still paying the price.Biden's decision takes $ from innocent ppl, cripples economy.
#Kabul
's airport is operational again, with flights arriving from MazareSharif & Herat today(and Dubai&Doha, but not commercial) A team from Qatar flew in to set up operations; Taliban was busy putting up new posters and banners, replacing the republic ones.

#HKIA
After a lot of interviews and digging, my story is finally out: I'm told hundreds of
#Afghans
have been evicted/displaced across
#Germany
as accommodations were needed for newly arriving Ukrainians. This one from
#Berlin
.
This is Hamida Ahmadi. It's been five days since the explosions in Dasht-e-Barchi. Her daughter Shukria, 18, still hasn't been found... Though her notebook and her beautiful drawings were found. Her family keeps searching.
So much charity at the hospital this afternoon. Random strangers deliver books, flowers, food, money, etc to the victims of the
#Kabul
bombing. So much kindness. So much care. ❤️
Our (Kamair) plane engine just failed flying into
#Kabul
,propeller stopped during flight and engine spat out fire.We landed!!!
Now fire trucks surrounding plane.Rabbani&lots of NDS on flight too. We’re all shaking a bit.Pilot did great,he managed to land gliding down.

Noor Agha is 10yrs old.With
#Afghanistan
's economy crumbling, his widowed mother-once a cook-lost her job. As the oldest son,Noor is responsible for making sure the family eats and is warm:he collects plastic used for heating, and scrap metal to sell.He makes abt 50Afs/day ($0.50).
Met a bunch of girls this week from rural villages whose parents decided to move to bigger towns just so they could finish high school. All of them are now prepping for university entrance exams.Lack of access to eduction is still a huge issue throughout
#Afghanistan
,esp for girls
1/2 Ever since moving to
#Afghanistan
3 yrs ago,I have regularly visited friends in
#Herat
enjoying countless afternoons in their beautiful garden outside the city; drinking tea by the pool or in the shade of fruit trees. The
#Taliban
has now captured this garden. My friends left.
Afghans. They have a stunningly beautiful country, amazing food, incredibly hospitality, kindness, etc. No,they do not want to leave their country. They are forced to do so,under sweat, tears, sadness, horror;seeking refuge in unfamiliar (sometimes unkinder places).
This is a tragedy.
The Afghans forced to leave their homes, fleeing violence & persecution, do not want to become refugees. They do not want to beg for asylum, trapped in a camp on a border somewhere. They lived dignified lives and wanted to remain in their homes & communities
#Panjshir
.
Villages sit empty;desolate.Trucks, piled up w ppl’s belongings-furniture,cushions etc- are heading towards Kabul as people are leaving.Hundreds of armed Talibs roam the road. Many restaurants, shops are closed, few civilians are outside, remain in villages.
#Afghanistan
The first women's protest I covered this morning in Dasht-e-Barchi before things turned violent. Was chased away from a second protest I tried to photograph;other journalists were beaten, detained. The women keep shouting for their rights, they are unstoppable.

Hi
@MJalal313

Igor Mojayev, 54, lost his 12-year-old daughter and wife to the war in
#Ukraine
. "She was crushed to death." - His exact word when talking about his daughter, who had been in a wheelchair. He stands next to his house - only rubble now. His dog Gerda survived.
Nowruz Mubarak! To a new year! Thinking of dear
#Afghanistan
today, wondering if the Taliban even lets people celebrate...
Looking forward to being back in Kabul some time this spring. ❤️
Some foreign embassies in
#Kabul
have-since US withdrawal news-been telling their citizen to better leave
#Afghanistan
.EU member states still deporting
#Afghans
...what a double standard! Are people not all the same?Is one person worthier than the other
@EUinAfghanistan
? Shameful!
Went all the way to Jalalabad today(3h drive)with the Taliban's permission...only to get there&be told,"no",it's not possible to get access to the story we had previously told them we'd cover...
Six hours of driving for nothing.Yesterday,no access granted to Panjshir either.🤷♀️
"One day I'd love to be Afghanistan's first female president," Shamsia told me yesterday.
This country is full of ambitious, determined, goal-oriented women like her - they are the ones who will be building
#Afghanistan
's future.
Flying into
#Kabul
from
#Istanbul
... fairly cheap; bit above average but nothing crazy.
Flying out of
#Afghanistan
... *way way way* overpriced... airlines capitalising on the conflict, the chaos, on people wanting to leave, wanting to seek refuge. 😒😒
But,having lived here for 3yrs,I can def say things are different, esp for women. Please,if youre a male journo, esp if this is your 1st time in Afgh,do be careful&humble w your words & try to understand the whole story.Yours will be different from that of your female colleagues.
Today's photo: decades of war and foreign invasion in
#Afghanistan
. One of the results: In Helmand's Sangin, where British forces once fought, the entire town was reduced to rubble. People say they are finally rebuilding again. "The war is over," the told me.
It's been 6 months since the Taliban took
#Kabul
;since unspeakable disaster unfolded at the airport,100s of lives were lost during the evacuations. For many,6 months of pain;for others on the war's frontlines,6 months of relative calm.Where will
#Afghanistan
be 6 months from now?
Taliban has entered the Green Zone, entering offices and registering who is living/working there I am told. I am also told that the militants have taken some of the cars, as well as keys to armoured vehicles.
I met a lot of people in
#Kabul
over the last couple of weeks and this week, I'd like to share one story each day. These stories - these voices are important to hear. Please follow along!
#Helmand
's Sangin: the destruction in the frontline town is widespread; barely a house is standing. People say they are just starting to rebuild now.

The beauty. The tragedy. I have no words. My heart hurts.
#Afghanistan
, Afghans deserve better. They deserve all the peace and happiness and calmness and joy.
"Where are you going," I asked Azram, almost 4 years old.
"Kandahar", she told me. Her family hadn't told her that she'd be leaving Afghanistan for the US, a fact maybe too difficult to understand.
Full story from

airport coming soon.
Amina's dad just sent this to me.Almost 1yr since the maternity ward attack in
#Kabul
,this little fighter has not been defeated by the terrorists. As the US leaves, many worry abt what's ahead.I wonder what it might mean for Amina's future. She deserves the best. She deserves peace
Tough realities in
#Kabul
,but we shouldn't look away:
#Afghanistan
's economic downfall is causing a hunger crisis that sees countless children malnourished;many fighting for their lives.Families tell me they can't afford food. Pictures taken at the Indira Gandhi Hospital.
Images emerging from today's attack near a girls' school in
#Kabul
are devastating and show sheer brutality and violence. Girls - students - murdered while walking home in their school uniforms. They could have had a bright future. They could have been
#Afghanistan
's hope.

's Balkh!
A local Taliban representative of the Ministry for the Propagation of Virtue and the Prevention of Vice in
#Balkh
province announced yesterday that women would no longer be allowed to use public bath houses.
Night has fallen in
#Kabul
on 9/11. Thick clouds rolled in earlier; now, thunder and lightning - for the first time in a while.
I’m listening to the thunderstorm from the comfort of my home, and I’m wondering what the year ahead will bring for this country.
#Afghanistan
Some people, including journalists and human rights defenders have waited at the airport in
#Kabul
all day, without being able to get on the flights they were supposed to get on. They are now heading 'home', back into the city. Lets see if they can leave tomorrow...🙏🙏
Afghan media extensively covering/updating on
#USElections
.The results are important for
#Afghans
,they could directly affect their lives/security.And just another thing...coverage of
#KabulUniversity
attack,where at least 35 died, made little internat'l coverage.Disgraceful.
Arrived in
#Ukraine
. One of the first things I saw: Lots of foreigners - mainly Africans and Middle Easterners - stranded at the border. Many say they have been stuck for days - including during bitter cold nights - and were, so far, unable to enter the EU.
Thread 1/4.
I was in
#Gayan
today photographing an aid agency’s mobile health team, when a male agency photographer walked past me, and straight into a tent full of women, immediately starting to photograph without asking consent.
1/2 On the plane heading from
#Kabul
to
#Doha
.More than a dozen journalists were forced to board a plane - even physically pushed by US marines to do so.We refused,we arranged an escort to pick us up from Kabul Airport, but no.The US detained us,then deported us against our will.
On its first evacuation flight,
#Germany
took just SEVEN people from
#Kabul
,the Foreign Ministry has confirmed. The capacity of the A-400M transport aircraft is up to 150 people. The airport was full of people desperate to leave, many of whom had visas for third countries.
SHAMEFUL!

as there was a lot of info to digest&I wanted to speak to ppl there to make sense of it.Didn’t want to make unverified assumptions,so I did research&digging. In the process, all the info added up&wasn’t contradictory. So bear w/ me.
"I'm hearing sirens, does this mean the Russians are in the city? They just started and I don't know what to do."
Woke up to this voice message from my dear friend in Lviv. Her voice shaking in fear. In August she fled
#Kabul
; today she says she wants to flee
#Ukraine
.
Snippets from
#Kabul
.More than 200 displaced families remain in Shar-e-Naw park, most had fled the northern provinces of Kunduz, Badakhshan, Takhar. They now say they want to go home, but can't afford it. Transportation for a whole family costs around,10k Afghani ($117) they say.
Abdul Akbari, 22 years old and from Paktia; public policy student in his last year, injured in yesterday's attack, recovering in hospital. His words:
"We're a generation trying to make

great again."
It's been almost 9 months.Soraya,20,was one of the mothers who survived the attack on the maternity hospital in
#Kabul
's Dasht-e-Barchi last year. Her daughter Nazanine, who was injured, is healthy today. The trauma? Soraya carries it with her, but says she had also been lucky.
1/5 Today I met several
#Afghans
working in
#Istanbul
,sorting and collecting garbage. They arrived recently, via
#Pakistan
and
#Iran
,after dozens of days of walking. In Turkey, they hold no residence permits&live in constant fear for being arrested. They can’t even get a bus pass...
