Folk horror media iceberg chart (do people still do those?) for the absolutely zero people that asked
(Yes, I am aware, this doesn't have *everything* on it. And some of these probably belong in different categories. I just made this for autism purposes.)
70% voted for Self ID on gender recognition. The Tory government has gone out of their way to ignore this and call the votes "skewed".
Marginally over 50% of people voted for Brexit and the Tories are insistent on breaking international law to "get it done" at all costs.
@lackingsaint
I appear to have gained a whole lot of likes for someone who basically just reiterated the point of a very good post which actually deserves the likes
"Hey, Robyn, nice chart! But where's..."
Say no more, restless wanderer.
The Folk Horror Media Iceberg... Part 2.
With these two iceberg charts, you shall be watching these films until the end of time.
My favourite movies of 2018 (bearing in mind I still have a lot to see):
THE SHAPE OF WATER (my all-time No.1)
ANNIHILATION
UPGRADE
SPIDER-MAN: INTO THE SPIDERVERSE
THE ENDLESS
SLAUGHTERHOUSE RULEZ
AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR
GHOST STORIES
INCREDIBLES 2
THE PREDATOR
I donβt know if I ever mentioned this but a couple years ago I found the T-Rex used in TAMMY AND THE T-REX. Itβs been refurbished/repainted a bit but it is pretty much in its original condition and still works! (This took me a couple years to find and track down!)
@radiantbutch
It's over a year old now, and I look quite different today, but then again I don't have many photos of myself recently. I love this one so much, I made it my profile picture.
It appears that POOR THINGS has been cut by the BBFC for its wide UK release. Considering that it remains uncut in the US and has played without any real concern uncut on the UK festival circuit, I do question if there's really anything in the film which justifies its censorship.
M3GAN writer Akela Cooper explains why the AI doll has become an LGBTQ+ icon.
"This little girl has lost her family. Then this doll is also brought into the situation. That resonates for a lot of people in the gay community, the idea of found family."
So, yeah, as a lesbian, I don't exactly feel comfortable with something like this being tweeted by a cishet woman with a history of anti-trans views. Especially one whose every word is attended to by millions per day, and actively contributes to queer oppression.
Oh no! Sure would suck if people started throwing tomatoes too! Especially as tomatoes have corrosive properties to bronze and will most certainly not only leave a mark but also, in turn, a message that cannot be scrubbed away? That would be awful!
@cornelia_august
That SUPERMAN LIVES bit would have been awesome if they were bothered to actually get Nicolas Cage in for it. It's not like he'll say no!
@FoodForestNetwk
There is legitimately no other way I can interpret this. I'm also legitimately shocked by how few comments there are on the original post which even acknowledge the existence of the whimsical warlock.
Whenever
#IStandWithJKRowling
is trending, it's largely not because people actually stand with her in whatever latest incident that has happened around her, but rather because they just blindly support the anti-trans sentiments that she stands for.
Suddenly realised the super duper awesome fact that probably the most famous modern-day male horror protagonist (Ash from the EVIL DEAD films) is, for the majority of the franchise, an amputee. There's some great disability rep in that series!
The final of three charts, and the completion of this unholy trinity. The dark deed has been done.
The Folk Horror Media Iceberg - Part 3.
You may question the inclusion of some titles - but trust me, they're all there for a reason.
With these three, may your pilgrimage begin!
@AliceAldcroft
If you want a well-made one, We Need to Talk About Kevin. It was borderline unwatchable for me and upset me so much that I'd rather not think about it again in my life, let alone watch it. If you want a bad one, Escape from Tomorrow was a horrifyingly offensive letdown.
@umaenot
@midnight_pals
It's in reference to his sadly unproduced film script for THE MUMMY from the 80s which featured a prominent transgender character.
Look, no offense to the actor, but I have thoughts on how this role was played by a man and how female actors just aren't given these monstrous roles most of the time. Men playing "ugly" women is something I'm starting to see have a major comeback - seen also in SMILE.
@LeCinephiles
ScarJo is human appropriation, as y'all should know she's actually a black bald alien wearing human skin trying to seduce the human population so that she can feed her ship

@ReignBotHorror
Oh, of course, as we know all horror movies don't have strong female characters.
Unless you're talking about Alien, A Nightmare On Elm Street, Halloween, Texas Chain Saw Massacre, Hellraiser, Black Christmas, Terminator, The Babadook, and pretty much EVERY OTHER HORROR FLICK.
You see, I don't actually hate this. It feels a little wrong for a direction for the franchise, but I don't. The roots of it, believe it or not, lie in the original film - Leatherface is portrayed as a scared innocent who doesn't fully understand what is going on.
First of all, fuck this sincerely. Misleading trailers can be an art form in themselves, particularly in regards to horror and not giving the game away. Also, final cut doesn't always turn out as expected.
A federal judge has ruled movie studios can be sued under false advertising laws if they release deceptive movie trailers.
This comes after 2 Ana de Armas fans filed a lawsuit alleging they rented βYESTERDAYβ after seeing de Armas in the trailer.

A lot of people seem convinced I'm talking about J.K. Rowling when I never specified an author. That certainly is a telling assumption to make. On an unrelated note:
It's important to vote, yes, but it's times like this where you realise that we need to be much more active than voting. Depending on the COVID situation, we're gonna gradually need to get louder and louder... no matter what it takes.

So, spotted something yesterday which led me down quite the rabbit hole. I was watching FRIDAY THE 13TH PART III (1982) for the first time when I spotted this outhouse in one scene.
Look familiar?
#StormJorge
has just been named by the Spanish met service, but is forecast to bring rain and strong winds to the UK on Saturday and Sunday.
Weather warnings:
For anybody who thinks Garth Marenghi's Darkplace was over the top in its parody of cheap 80s British horror, please enjoy this: the greatest scene in cinema history.
Netflix don't release their original content on DVD and Blu-Ray because if they did then people would realise that the rest of their library is basically just the DVD section of your local charity shop
@aggressie
@josephjames94
Ah, but that would require A) somebody to accept that the unspecified author I'm talking about (there are several known for this practice) is them, and B) that the statement isn't true. Which is highly unlikely.
Look I hate to QRT this but seriously responding to someone who doesn't want to financially support you with "trans people burn dogs" is some true bozo behaviour.
Deeply disappointed
@jessiegender
doesn't realise purethink is incompatible with owning ANYTHING connected with me, in ANY form. The truly righteous wouldn't just burn their books and movies but the local library, anything with an owl on it and their own pet dogs.

It becomes apparent now that sometimes... our vote doesn't matter. The government has said that they're planning on backing out of the human rights bill, without any vote or consideration. I dread to think what will happen to me and those I love if that happens.
EYES OF FIRE (1983) is an actual masterpiece of American horror cinema, and I have no clue how it went under the radar. A mesmerising, chaotic tale of witchcraft, the ghosts of colonialism, religious fanaticism, and blood on the wild frontier.
@SeverinFilms
@Shudder_UK
I've read the note that the BBFC posted, and I totally get where their concerns come from, but I do find the whole affair rather dubious considering that the movie has played uncut on the fest circuit. It does all reek a bit of "the educated can handle it, but not the commoner".
FRANKENSTEIN had a kid getting drowned in 1931. Look, it's a difficult thing to do right and not just feel like a cheap move to get a reaction out of an audience, but it's always been here, and when you're watching horror, you wanna fear for *all* the sympathetic characters.
GHOSTWATCH is one of the most legitimately terrifying pieces of media I have ever experienced. Pure unsettling genius. A truly terrifying story of old evil in a mundane contemporary setting - I can't imagine how much panic this must have caused on air.

And to think, I was planning on writing a silly tweet about how the FRIDAY THE 13TH outhouse inspired the SHREK toilet, but ended up coming across an obscure cultural mystery from mid-century America!
Although I always thought SHREK was more of a Michael Myers guy. Ahem.
Just got back from the vigil for Brianna Ghey in Sackville Gardens, awe-inspiring turnout to say the least with between 1500 and 2000 present at minimum. Lots of beautiful speeches.
Considering that the news platforms transphobes and ignores vulnerable trans voices, and the media portrays us as liars and mentally ill, it becomes clear what needs to happen next.
When the next protest happens, and it MUST happen, we need to become a problem for the government. Something they can't ignore or usher away like everything else. Something they can't bury like we have had to do to so many of our fallen trans siblings lately.
I see far too many birds suffer and die trapped in netting around shops, under canal bridges, and even in the trees where they belong and thrive. Unspeakably cruel and nasty.

genuinely just made me roar in the cinema. This isn't a joke. It inspired powerful, deep hidden feelings within me which I'm not sure I can express in any other way. Michael Dougherty, I love everything you do and you're an amazing guy.
@Nyxfears
James Bell keeps making Letterboxd accounts under different names and leaving 5 star reviews of only his films whilst filling them with transphobic abuse, so I reported them of course (hopefully he won't make another, I'm tired of reporting)
It should be noted that the BBFC have got a little bit weird again lately. The 15-rated drama film MONICA was made to remove a "reference to auto-erotic asphyxiation", which apparently took the form of someone briefly and quietly saying "choke me" during a sex scene.
Couple of clarifications: firstly, yeah, even though it's a word which I use to describe my identity, not taking my chances with tweeting out the d-word. Secondly, uh, yeah, tried to get the original tweet in-frame, but it wouldn't let me do it without unblocking the account.
@IndiaWilloughby
Nope. Frankly, currently feel like a second-class citizen. Feel deeply trapped here, and have a feeling that my quality of life is only going to get worse following recent media coverage of trans folk and anti-trans legislations coming in.
Just putting it out there that there's an insane amount of lost media surrounding Shudder's QUEER FOR FEAR which we're likely never going to get to see and has been buried by the company - like, two whole series' worth of footage, if not more.

You see, if they'd actually asked Nic Cage to do it, it would rock, but they decided to use a ghoulish PS2 esque mockup instead of getting him in front of the greenscreen...

Recently rewatched "An Unearthly Child", and yeah, it's quite amazing to see what the Doctor was like before travelling with companions. Very apt comparison, I hadn't thought about it like that.
The world is collapsing around us, and yet somehow, there is hope. And I can't help but smile.
There have been not one, not two, but THREE trans senators elected in one night. For all of the bad in the world, that is... beyond incredible.

new movie THE GIRLS. Look at that stacked cast already!
It's ridiculous how good FRANKENHOOKER is. Like, it's actually brilliant. It's been ages since I've seen a full 5-star schlock horror film, y'know, the truly inspired stuff - I can't believe I haven't seen it before.
