I wrote this about how mental health services (don’t) handle suicide bereavement and its impact on other service users. Thank you
@MadCovid
for publishing it❤️
When Aoife died her last tweet about getting no help went practically fucking viral and and now the same is happening to Rachel’s and I can’t stand it I can’t STAND it. Where was everyone when they were fucking alive. Where is everyone for the people who are still here.
mad friends, what anxiety grounding stuff *actually works* for you? (not interested in opinions or advice from people who haven't lived with severe anxiety)
As one of the “vulnerable” cis women whose needs get used to exclude trans women or create fear of trans inclusivity, I have some things to say. Context: I have long term mh probs which land me in hospital or crisis house 2-4 x per year. I do not feel safe in mixed environments.
Trans women’s needs and the needs of “vulnerable” cis women like me are not in conflict. There are many, many safety issues in women’s mental health and I would like everyone to focus on those rather than chasing my sisters out of spaces they need, and where I want them to be.
If you wish to be an ally to “vulnerable” women, campaign to ban restraint in psych settings. Inform yourself on how psychiatry & psychology pathologise & punish female emotion. Campaign for refuge & rape crisis funding. Campaign for gender self id policies in all those spaces.
I need everyone to remember that they will not have time to implement this before they are out of office. Labour may or may not want to do the same but at the moment this is just rhetoric - dangerous rhetoric, harmful rhetoric, but not policy yet.
"Specialist teams linked to the benefits system will instead assess the sick and decide how best to keep them in work." What DWP Health Assessors whose work is so bad that most claimants win at appeal? Who trigger so many with questions such as 'why haven't you killed yourself?"
People who loved her expressing their grief is one thing but I’m sorry the bigger response to peoples last tweets about the mh system replicates the way that nobody in that system believes you until you’re dead and I find it fucking ghoulish.
Anyway if it makes you feel like you have to die to be taken seriously (which it does to me sometimes) please try to fight that thought. There are people who still want you here.
I volunteer in the vawg sector and campaign on women’s mental health. The place I feel safest in crisis is a women’s crisis house with an all-women team. Trans women have been quietly getting on with working in and using their service for many years. This has not caused problems.
Also, if you’ve got this far and you aren’t already, follow funny & smart trans women
@shonfaye
@aedison
and
@MunroeBergdorf
because they have good things to say, some of which are about being trans and some of which are not. Here endeth the thread.
I’ve got a joke about my GP practice but you have to fill out an online form then someone might call you back and tell it or you can hold for 45 minutes for the punchline
For instance, women’s wards are often staffed and managed by cis men who have access to our bedrooms and our bathrooms. Women are put on close observation with cis men, meaning they can come in if we spend too long in the bathroom and restrain us if they deem it necessary.
This women’s crisis house functioning on a self-Id basis is nationally recognised as a leading light in women’s mental health and in supporting survivors of domestic and sexual violence.
Mate. In the raids that kicked off the Stonewall riots, cops used to take people to the toilets and check they weren’t dressed as the “wrong” gender. Speaking as a cis lesbian in London... you’re the ones erasing history here. Fuck ALL THE WAY off.
spare a thought for folks on psych wards this weekend who are likely trapped with enthusiastic nurses trying to "cheer them up" with coronation celebrations
This is why survivors believing each other so fiercely and so hard matters so much to me. Knowing it’s not enough for everyone but hoping it’s enough for some.
Just softblocked someone for arguing it’s not antisemitic to blame Jews for Labour’s losses. So as someone from a long line of left wing Jews: if you think this is our fault, unfollow me. This is the last thing we bloody need right now.
Cat: HUNGRY
Me: you have food
Cat: SO HUNGRY
Me: look, it’s right here in your bowl
Cat: BAD FOOD DON’T LIKE
Me: *moves same food from one bowl to another*
Cat: THANK YOU HUMAN VERY TASTY
Got the official letter through so can finally say: I got my funding! Will be studying a 1+3(.5) PhD programme part time from October via

My bus stop has been moved to make more space for cycle lanes and they just haven’t bothered to put any seats at the new one and I am once again asking why green initiatives ALWAYS come at disabled people’s expense
Boris Johnson at the briefing telling us NHS mental health services are still there for us just feels a bit hollow when he’s been systematically destroying them for years u no
it's schizophrenia awareness day? like many concepts in the psy disciplines, scz has a complex and contested history and not everyone diagnosed with it feels it's meaningful. but psychosis/hearing voices/seeing visions feels like one of the few areas of mental health where it is
I see J*ss T*ylor now thinks that autism and adhd are just another way of pathologising trauma responses lol, there is large-scale population-study evidence contradicting this *plus* the testimony of many neurodivergent women.
I realise it's unfair to begrudge people career progression but so many people come and work at the crisis house for a bit because it's good experience for what they really want to do (clinical psychology training) and it fucking sucks to repeatedly be people's training ground.
Among all the other bonkers stuff about PIP assessments, it’s absolutely wild that even if you accept the supposed logic of their function they ask nothing about your ability to keep your home clean enough to be safe
Autistic people: we find unpredictability distressing
Autism professionals: we are going to set you some tasks which we can’t detail in advance and see how you react, then mark you against a scheme we can’t tell you about to see if you’re autistic
Every time mental health professionals cotton on to something I like doing my heart sinks and I await the slow death of my hobby as it is repackaged in the service of “recovery” and shoved down our throats as the next cheap cure
"Knitting lovers highlighted the therapeutic value of knitting, which was facilitated by the qualitative nature of this study."

Just found out vets use mirtazepine as an appetite stimulant in cats but I stg almost everyone I know has had a psychiatrist insist it won’t affect their appetite
My local mental health crisis house needs a negative covid test before they can admit anyone. They’re taking up to 5 days to come back. How many people in crisis can safely wait 5 days for an admission? There are so many hidden harms to a badly run test system.
Oh my god.
My dog stole my underpants from the laundry basket and somehow. SOMEHOW. Threw them out the window. They are now on the roof of the Mexican restaurant two floors below.
Sometimes when people roar it is not because they need to be tamed but because they need to be heard.

look it's not that I don't want men's mental health highlighted it's just that I'm not sure an entire campaign based around getting as much attention as possible on people's final text messages before killing themselves is super responsible
I’m not watching I Daniel Blake because I can’t stand how awful the benefits system is. If you watch & it’s a wake up call - great. But remember that claimants are allowed to be smokers, drinkers, irrespomsible, or just not very nice - and still be entitled to basic dignity.
It sort of feels like everyone has been holding their breath to cope with all the, well, everything, and now everyone is reaching the point of burnout and it’s become a big struggle to keep going all round. Is it just me & my pals or is this a thing all over?
@calebsubs
I support the nurses strike but the nurses are definitely not underpaid as a result of lived experience roles being funded. It’s extremely rare to see one at director level, in fact I never have before - most are capped nearer to band 3 or 4.
@calebsubs
Hi, it seems like maybe you haven’t come across the term before but “lived experience” is a field of work based around using experience of eg using healthcare services and having long term conditions or disabilities to improve said services.
Imagine being Amber Rudd and THIS being your red line. Hostile environment? Fine. Deporting lgbt asylum seekers to countries where they fear persecution? Nooo problem! Screwing over disabled people? Let me at em!
Kicking some cunts out the cunt party? FUCK THAT I’M OFF
I have resigned from Cabinet and surrendered the Conservative Whip.
I cannot stand by as good, loyal moderate Conservatives are expelled.
I have spoken to the PM and my Association Chairman to explain.
I remain committed to the One Nation values that drew me into politics.
The brilliant thing about hanging out with mad autistic pals is that you can see each other for like an hour and then go “ok this has been very nice I’m done now bye” and then go and have a nap and they’re like “yay ok bye have a nice nap” and nobody’s weird about it
Maybe the NHS shouldn’t be such a dick about accessing assessments then. The private clinics do this because their patients can’t afford private prescriptions regularly or ongoing monitoring but might be able to save up for a one-off assessment.
Feels weird posting anything good atm but yesterday I signed my contract to start a new job one day a week as research assistant to a Qual applied health research centre at kings. Hopeful that fewer hours and something really in my wheelhouse will make things much more manageable
I think we all probably know on some level that clinicians use grim humour to cope with their jobs - just like we use it to cope with our disabilities - but absolutely do not fucking post about it
Imagine finding that the midwives spoke about the night you almost died and your son died like this on social media.. this was a post from the labour ward co ordinator the next day. My son was born dead at 2.37am and was being revived for 20 mins and I was being put into a coma.

If you think you have to understand me to see me as human, then no explanation will ever be enough.
Just thinking about how great it would be if there were some kind of TEAM that could provide mental health TREATMENT at HOME in a CRISIS so you didn’t have to leave your routine and structure and animals. Wonder what they might call themselves. Can’t imagine for the life of me.

Another punch in the gut to start the week:
@aoifarecovers
took her own life after the kind of treatment we all, at this point, expect from mental health services when you have a "bpd" diagnosis.
I know this is well-meant & genuinely felt but people are different, with different support systems & strengths & struggles. To say “I did it, so can you” erases all that. One person’s recovery doesn’t guarantee another’s, I find it hard when people say things like this to me.
@Glinner
I was a young girl with an eating disorder and am now a woman with an eating disorder and honestly this is such a nonsense argument. It’s not the same thing as being trans. If you’re going to make transphobic arguments do it on your own terms, don’t drag us into it, thanks
Nearly a year ago, my mental health trust
@CI_NHS
removed the toilet doors in their wards "for safety reasons". After months of pushing, we were assured that they have been replaced with safer doors. Have been told by someone on a ward now that none of the rooms have them.
@oldenoughtosay
On Saturday a bus doinked a cop car at a Palestine demo and I thought that was gonna be the funniest crash related content of the week but I was wrong
[ableism, bpd stigma, psychobollocks]
Everyone finding this hilarious can go fuck themselves tbqh. Gaiman can doubly go fuck himself for the pass ag, poorly informed “crazy ex girlfriend” dig which once again uses people with a bpd dx as a punchline
I called DWP via relay UK bc I was too stressed to speak, asking about my next payment and if it takes into account the decision on review. The guy just read out the award letter and it’s all fine, no cuts, awarded until 2027.
I would rather live in a world where we give people things they might be able to survive without, than a world where we are so scared of getting scammed we actively withhold things people absolutely definitely need to live.
My GP: And how are you holding up mentally?
Me: I mean, ok I think, I just don’t know how to tell what’s having an anxiety disorder and what’s the fact we’re living through the actual apocalypse
@FosterChangeUK
Yes! Imo the things that make services trauma informed are: clear communication, consistency, reliability, respecting privacy, understanding that building trust takes time. So really basic respect for users’ autonomy & humanity 🤷🏻♀️

The news we were all hoping we wouldn’t hear but as time went on with no sightings felt more and more inevitable.

Admitted to local Bin. Interview with lovely but nervous junior doctor.
Him: “Do you feel like your thoughts are being broadcast?”
Me: “Only when I’m on Twitter.”
