People with lived experience of mental illness!
I’m interested in what would help you attend mental health research events and contribute to the discussions.
Nothing is off limits! No wrong answers! Please share your thoughts. Thanks+ André

Is this simple comparison with placebo helpful?
My concern is that busy GPs might read that Amitriptyline is "the best" and not dig further
Please help save The Mental Elf!
We need your help to keep publishing free blogs and sharing them on social media.
Please donate what you can:
And share these videos so everyone knows The Mental Elf needs your help to survive. THANK YOU! ❤️
These are my planned areas of

Exercise for depression: an evidence-based treatment option
"Exercise is efficacious in treating depression and depressive symptoms and should be offered as an evidence-based treatment option."
- Heissel et al, 2023
Why does the general public not donate to mental health in the same way as they do to cancer, cardiovascular disease and dementia?
Answers in a tweet please!

I've been thinking a lot about what's going on in mental health services right now:
- Have services closed?
- Have they adapted to provide online support?
- How has this all affected patients?
- How are staff coping?
Please tell me what's happening where you are & please share
If therapy is so powerful, isn’t there a risk it can harm us too?
Thanks+ to
@Martha_Gill
for writing this challenging piece:
It's really important that future research measures the harms as well as the benefits of talking therapies (1/2)
Co-production of research with people who have the relevant lived experience is always important. This must not be overlooked during the current pandemic.
Clinicians!
1 Actively listen, don't control the interview
2 Support & encourage patients by paying attention to their emotions
3 Ask: “What do you think is going on?”
4 Take advantage of patient’s personal knowledge
5 Involve patients in their care

Hi
@peterkinderman
Thank you for the emails you have sent me over the last few days asking about my work with
@NatElfService
&
@Minervation
and my partnership with
@RCPsych
. In the interest of being open & transparent, I’ve decided to answer your Qs here on Twitter. (1 of many)
"Forget the names of all these fancy cognitive & behavioural processes, & all those psychodynamic defences. A therapist just needs to focus wholeheartedly on their client, & help them find a way round the counterproductive things they're doing"
How should we talk about
#suicide
?
Recent research concludes that the most acceptable phrases are currently: “attempted suicide”, “took their own life”, “died by suicide” and “ended their life”.
New evidence on how
#pets
can support our
#mentalhealth
:
- alleviating worry
- providing comfort
- preventing feelings of loneliness
- physical activity
- distraction from symptoms
- giving sense of identity & self-worth
What would YOU add to the list?
Why hasn't evidence-based mental health closed the 17 year gap between research and practice?
#MHED2018
Because it's not an evidence revolution or a technological revolution that we need. It's a cultural shift that practitioners need to use evidence in their work.
"We must ensure as a first priority that mental health services are trustworthy. We must listen to survivors who have been telling us for decades now that the diagnosis of BPD is an irreversible stain on the soul"

We need to teach trainee psychiatrists about:
- shared decision-making
- self-directed support
- co-production
- collaborative care
- support-planning
- ethics
- human rights
- community engagement
- social inclusion
What else?
I've seen some great Chairs at mental health conferences over recent years, but few can match the former member of the Beastie Boys who is introducing speakers today at

- For every suicide there are approx. 20 suicide attempts
- For every suicide attempt there are many more individuals who think about suicide
- Identifying which individuals will attempt suicide is crucial for intervention/prevention

Our blog today is on the largest ever meta-analysis in psychiatry, which finds that antidepressants are more effective than placebo for short-term treatment of acute depression in adults

60 years ago we began using lithium in psychiatry. Countless studies support its efficacy as a mood stabiliser, some even suggest neuroprotective, telomere-preserving & anti-suicidal effects.
BUT
#lithium
remains under-prescribed. Why?
Putting lived experience front & centre at mental health conferences is so important. It's great that
#ISTSS2019
have done this.
The next step is perhaps to give a platform to people who have even more challenging stories, who are not recovered, who we struggle to listen to.
A great overview from
@MuradMKhan

#IASP2019
He reminds us that it is foolish to view suicide as a single issue. If we are to prevent suicide across the world we must address social deprivation, inequalities, poverty and discrimination.
It's great to see

Science is essential to advancing mental health, which is why we’re committing £200 million for mental health research over the next five years to drive the field forward:

Mental health research should:
‣ listen & learn from people with lived experience
‣ address inequalities
‣ build on expertise from multiple disciplines
‣ work in partnership with people who can turn research into action
#MentalHealthResearchMatters
Social prescribing is a holistic approach to treating people’s mental and physical health. Care farming, the therapeutic use of farming practices, is one example of an activity that can be “prescribed”.

For 50 years, Survivors have been demanding change to ‘Borderline Personality Disorder’ diagnosis. It has persisted, despite having no scientific validity & provoking most discriminatory, judgmental reactions from clinicians in mental health care
Suicide is a leading cause of death in young people, yet their experiences of suicidal distress are poorly understood.
Our blog today explores new qualitative research that sheds light on this important topic
New study suggests that treatment for depression should include not only increasing light & moderate to vigorous physical activity, but also seek to replace passive sedentary behaviours with mentally active ones for the best possible chance of improvement.
