@hulsey_ryan @MartinSkold2 @FreeManDespair @APTeacher1754 @RBrookhiser There are slaveowners who were, in their day, famous for being humane masters. Alexander Stephens was probably the most notable of them. Andy Johnson was never singled out in the same way, but he does seem to have been a lenient and kind enough master--with strange quirks.

Slavery is world history. White people did not invent it, and were not the first to practice it, but were the first to abolish it. The last place in the world to still have legal slavery was Africa. It wasn't fully legally abolished on the continent until 1981.

Fact of the day: Pumpkin pie became a popular dish during Civil War-era celebrations of Thanksgiving because pumpkins were grown on small farms, not plantations, making the pie a symbol of abolitionist virtue.

@baseballcrank @KatzOnEarth @RichLowry The free soil party and the Republican were essentially founded by abolitionists, Chase Sumner et al and we need to have a more capacious understanding of politics than just electoral politics. Eventually though women and blacks also influenced the rise of antislavery politics.

There is a reason why FDR wanted to pack the Supreme Court. Between 1890 and 1940 they made some of the most bad faith God awful decisions that destroyed the meaning of laws and perverted them to mean the opposite. We are in the same territory today with Alito leading the charge.

@LindseyGrahamSC Historian here this is like saying don’t politicize secession and the Civil War. Condemning treason to American democracy is not politicizing an issue it is making treason infamous.

Historian here this is in fact a very old song of the south, it’s how slaveholders plunged their region into war, it’s how their descendants maintained a racist regime well into the twentieth century.

Here's my take on "Rich men north of Richmond," the song that's gone viral on the right. You know who will love this song? The rich men north of Richmond will. Because it blames working class struggles on taxes, cultural elites and welfare cheats.

Historian here, re Jan6 report accountability is most important to uphold the rule of law. The fact that Jefferson Davis got away with committing treason was a disaster for American democracy and Trump should not be allowed to go scot free for the Jan6 insurrection.

Historian here perhaps you don’t know that Jefferson and Jackson were seen as founders of the Democratic Party? Or that Washington was a Federalist? Or that TR left the Republican Party to form his own party? Or that the neo confederate modern GOP is not the party of Lincoln?

The line between MAGA and the longtime right wing legal project can get awfully blurry. Still, right wing elites playing the long game of institution building are succeeding in a way MAGA causes aren't. I talked to Steven Teles about this big picture. 6/
