Death is the only reality in India. My 75 year old uncle my father’s younger brother passed away of COVID today. On retirement he opened a school for the musahar community in Bihar. I will miss talking history and politics with him like I used to when I stayed with him for a year
Civil War historian here when you celebrate Confederate Heritage Month you celebrate human bondage, treason to the American republic, and disfranchise all black Mississippians.
@JesseKellyDC
Your Twitter pic says it all, this is every respectable CW historian talking. Lee was a slaveholder who committed treason against his country enslaved black people was a mediocre general and opposed black citizenship. Get off Twitter and read some history not Lost Cause mythology
@VioletIrwin76
Historian here, you are the one who is historically illiterate. Lee reneged on a will to free slaves and reenslaved free blacks in Gettysburg.
Civil War historian here, the last people to interfere with the USPS were slaveholders who invaded post offices and burned abolitionist literature.
#SaveTheUSPS
@JesseKellyDC
And Lee was no gentleman leave alone honorable. As President of Washington and Lee college he condoned the actions of students who had raped black women. The guys just stinks and the hagiography surrounding him makes me want to puke

Civil War historian here anyone who is a fan of the Confederate traitor and enslaver Robert E Lee should not ever be the President of the United States.

There are slaveowners who were, in their day, famous for being humane masters. Alexander Stephens was probably the most notable of them. Andy Johnson was never singled out in the same way, but he does seem to have been a lenient and kind enough master--with strange quirks.
congratulations
@ThisWeekABC
for the puff piece on Mike Johnson, election denier and religious fundamentalist. They even managed to normalize the booing of their own reporter!
Waking up on a Sunday morning to Elon Musk’s Twitter and finding deranged and disgusting lies spewed on Paul Pelosi being attacked by a MAGA fueled right wing terrorist. Dinesh D’Souza has joined in and so have some far right commentators. This is what is at stake in the midterms
@TheAmandaGorman
Thank you Amanda for your beautiful poem that has inspired Americans and people all over the world. As I heard you recite your poem it reminded me of the abolitionist women poets I had studied, especially Wheatley. Your voice is a gift to this nation.
@RepRosendale
I wonder what the original inhabitants of Montana Native American nations who you dispossessed have to say about your nativism and cruelty.
Historian here happy solar eclipse day! Nat Turner took it as a sign to start a slave rebellion in 1831. A copy of his Bible from the National Museum of African American History and Culture.
@TomCottonAR
Senator, your history is as bad as your politics! African Americans voted for the party of Lincoln in the 19th century, they now overwhelmingly support the Democratic party. Maybe the GOP should stop supporting Confederate monuments?

Civil War historian here, is candidate
@NikkiHaley
who would fail any elementary US history course on the Civil War qualified to hold the office of the Presidency?
Historian of abolition here. Black (including the enslaved) and white abolitionists fought against slavery in countries that abolished slavery. It is this kind of racist thinking that reduces history to simplistic nonsense. The first country to fully abolish slavery was Haiti.
Slavery is world history. White people did not invent it, and were not the first to practice it, but were the first to abolish it. The last place in the world to still have legal slavery was Africa. It wasn't fully legally abolished on the continent until 1981.
1836? When Texas reintroduced slavery that has been abolished by the Republic of Mexico? nice going
@GregAbbott_TX
why not 1861 too when you seceded from the Union to protect and expand slavery?
To keep Texas the best state in the nation, we can never forget WHY our state is so exceptional.
I signed a law establishing the 1836 project, which promotes patriotic education & ensures future generations understand TX values.
Together, we'll keep our rich history alive.
This is literally like the violent overthrow of Reconstruction in the south. It’s the same white supremacist playbook of using terror to overthrow the democratic process.
Historian of nullification, secession, and the Civil War here. Very odd to see politicians today invoke Calhoun’s notion of absolute state sovereignty. Read the Constitution no state has the right to nullify a federal law and federal enactments take precedence in case of conflict
If the Constitution really made states powerless to defend themselves against an invasion, it wouldn’t have been ratified in the first place and Texas would have never joined the union when it did.
TX is upholding the law while Biden is flouting it.
FL will keep assisting…
Civil War historian here. Union army soldiers voted from
@the
battlefield to re elect Lincoln in 1864. I guess our neo Confederates have been pissed ever since!

As a historian I assure you that what the
@GOP
and
@LeaderMcConnell
did today is completely in keeping with disenfranchisement after Reconstruction and the Jim Crow South. And history will judge them accordingly. They belong in the dustbin of history and will live in infamy.

My mother Premini Sinha left us yesterday
February 2, 1927-April 22, 2024
Sorry for all the cancelled lectures and book events but I am in India to bid her goodbye until the end of the month
Historian of Reconstruction here and no when you are expelled for not following COVID rules you are nothing like the black legislators expelled for being black! The
@GOP
can literally weaponize anything to tell a tale of false victim hood. They have no shame!
Speaking to reporters, Clark compared his removal to when 33 Black lawmakers were expelled from the chamber post-Civil War for their skin color, and said Ralston was a "dictator."
#gapol
My last plea to my fellow American citizens. Save our republic! Right wing authoritarianism like slaveholding belongs to the dustbin of American history.

@ProfMSinha
: "The 2020 Presidential election is certainly as consequential as that of 1860. It is, as Biden is fond of saying, a battle for the ‘soul of America.’ The fate of the American republic once again hangs in the balance”
@HawleyMO
No teacher or the so called left as your McCarthyite tweet puts it does that. In fact a hate monger like you whose politics is race baiting should not be talking about American history. A seditionist border ruffian from Missouri who incites treason to the American republic.
@kyrstensinema
Historian here, actually President Lincoln waged a long drawn out war against traitors to American democracy and jailed doughfaces and copperheads like you Ms Vallandigham.
Thread from a historian of the Civil War and Reconstruction, my unsolicited advice to
@DNC
1. Trump should be either impeached or removed through the 25th amendment as already agreed but
@SenatorHawleyMO
@tedcruz
should be expelled when we have a majority.
Historian of abolition here. This conservative rag
@spectator
has published a literary criticism of
@TheAmandaGorman
ode to democracy. Reminds me of Jefferson’s criticism of Phillis Wheatley’s poetry as beneath criticism. It’s pretentious crap
Indian American historian here. Ramaswamy is from Kerala a state ruled by the Communist Party of India, a social Democratic party perennially elected. It has the highest literacy rates and the best stats in India yet he is a libertarian. Elitism defines him as he reveals:
"Ramaswamy is avidly seeking every possible effort to promote the most outrageously false and deliberately divisive claims regarding racism in America he can come up with. Nonetheless, media outlets are scrambling to schedule Ramaswamy for appearances."
Sounds familiar...

Historian here the three fifths clause gave slaveholders extra representation and political power and made it more difficult to abolish slavery. As usual the GQP has it backwards!
TN State Rep. Justin Lafferty (R) claims the three-fifths compromise — counting Black people as less than a person — was included in the Constitution "for the purpose of ending slavery."
Civil War historian again. Yes Liz Cheney is no Abraham Lincoln. Rather the correct comparison is Lincoln’s opponent Stephen Douglas who went along with slaveholders throughout the 1850s until they attacked the white man’s democracy in Kansas and committed treason.
As a historian of Reconstruction what’s appalling is that
@abcnews
could only find Mike Johnson’s powerful pals to interview. Shreveport city is around 56% black? What forms of voter suppression would give us a “civil” and clean cut anti democratic fanatic like MAGA Mike?
@DineshDSouza
Lee condoned black disfranchisement and the abuse of black women after the war. His reputation as a general is overrated. He enslaved free blacks. He was a slaveholder who had his slaves whipped and reneged on a will that freed them. What dont you get about this??
Where are you, men and women of faith?
If we lose this country, our children will never know freedom.
Stand united as men and women of faith to fight for America!
@WendyRogersAZ
Hey neo Confederate putz you worship traitors and racist caricatures. Guess who hates America and its founding ideals? Sit down and take out the uniform you shame with your treason.
@ltgovmcnally
Historian here and as usual the neo Confederate G coup P is talking nonsense. You want to celebrate worthy Tennesseans then how about the Quaker abolitionist Elihu Embree or the radical Reconstruction Governor Orestes Brownson or the fugitive slave abolitionist Jermaine Loguen?
Historian here woo hoo this is so exciting! Thanks to my great editor

Today's the day! Congratulations to our new class of Fellows. These 180 individuals represent 51 fields of study. We're honored to give them the opportunity to pursue their passions under the freest possible conditions.

Historian of slavery here if we teach the brutality of slavery it will make students uncomfortable? Why would American students identify with enslavers in 2023? The authors of idiotic history censorship laws reveal more about themselves than they know. Good piece
@ThePlumLineGS
!
Good question from James Grossman, head of the American Historical Association, about Tennessee's law:
“Can I teach that in Tennessee for over a hundred years the textbooks said one race is superior to another?”
Read my interview with Grossman below. 6/
The death of the party of Lincoln. June 2, 2020. The transformation was long underway but today we finally bury the Grand Old Party of the Republic, 1854-2020
Historian here so this is what I learned from historians Mastodon: William Jones author of Arizona’s 1864 abortion law left his wife and family in Missouri, married a 12 year old Mexican girl and then left her and married a 15 year old in Hawaii. Trump’s states rights triumphs!
Historian news, yesterday John Brown was executed for trying to free the enslaved in 1859. One of the last books he read in prison apparently was Toussaint Louverture’s biography. Slave rebellions were defined as petty treason against the state. Thought everyone should know!
"No one should countenance John Brown's violence or his effort to start a war to end slavery...You can be on the right side of history but still be wrong."

OMG this takes me back to 2018 when the exact same thing happened to me when I wrote a piece for CNN on Trump! It was an innocuous historical piece but my local police but a camera in my driveway and patrolled my home. In case anyone is wondering why I am so shrill on Twitter!
Historian of abolition here. Yes slavery was more entrenched and protected in the Constitution than gun ownership. Yet abolitionists changed the conversation. Ordinary citizens can make a difference join
@MomsDemand

and vote the bastards out.
Historian of abolition here. OTD John Brown was executed by the slave state of Virginia in 1859. Two years later Union army troops were marching to John Browns body. His soul goes marching on.

Historian of Reconstruction here, this is exactly what some would have told Thaddeus Stevens when he had southern Congressional delegations thrown out and began the Reconstruction of American democracy. Implementing the 14th amendment is not a distraction it is what we need!
The 14th Amendment gambit is a distraction from the larger real project of building a solid pro-democracy majority. Me adjudicating a debate among liberals and the left (with help from

On a solemn day for remembering those that have given their lives for our country fighting against tyranny and subjugation, the NYT has more than a million possible stories of the ultimate sacrifice by American patriots that they could tell. But they don’t.
@mschlapp
Really you guys are something else first you refuse to participate and now you cry foul! Congratulations on bald faced hypocrisy something the G coup P specializes in!
Historian here, Wow I can’t imagine you don’t know any history. So sorry you missed the entire 20th century! But given your bizarre politics it makes sense. Yes the parties have flipped roles since the 19th century as any school child should know!
Wow.
Can’t imagine getting to your age and believing that Democrats and Republicans woke up one day and decided to “flip-flop ideologies”.
Like “hey, I know we just literally fought a civil war over our ideas, but what if we just say, flip-flopped them for funsies?”
😂😂😂
Fact of the day: Pumpkin pie became a popular dish during Civil War-era celebrations of Thanksgiving because pumpkins were grown on small farms, not plantations, making the pie a symbol of abolitionist virtue.
@baseballcrank
@KatzOnEarth
@RichLowry
The free soil party and the Republican were essentially founded by abolitionists, Chase Sumner et al and we need to have a more capacious understanding of politics than just electoral politics. Eventually though women and blacks also influenced the rise of antislavery politics.
This is so exciting
#twitterstorians
and the fact that this until now undiscovered Wheatley poem was found in a Quaker common place book is noteworthy.

Thanks
@nrookie
for the heads up.
Civil War historian here, I am late to this party. But while everyone is going on about the GQP nut job’s gazpacho for gestapo flub, please note that she is advocating the overthrow of the United States government and secession at the end of this God awful clip.
There is a reason why FDR wanted to pack the Supreme Court. Between 1890 and 1940 they made some of the most bad faith God awful decisions that destroyed the meaning of laws and perverted them to mean the opposite. We are in the same territory today with Alito leading the charge.
If Mitch McConnell can steal 2 Supreme Court seats with 51 votes to take away voting rights, Democrats can pass legislation with 51 votes to protect voting rights
Under questioning by Sen. Ben Sasse (R-NE), Amy Coney Barrett is unable to name the five freedoms protected by the First Amendment to the U.S. Constitution.
@LindseyGrahamSC
Historian here this is like saying don’t politicize secession and the Civil War. Condemning treason to American democracy is not politicizing an issue it is making treason infamous.
Historian here this is in fact a very old song of the south, it’s how slaveholders plunged their region into war, it’s how their descendants maintained a racist regime well into the twentieth century.
Here's my take on "Rich men north of Richmond," the song that's gone viral on the right.
You know who will love this song? The rich men north of Richmond will.
Because it blames working class struggles on taxes, cultural elites and welfare cheats.
Private individuals in Texas can now sue anyone who performs or aids banned abortions, including doctors and even an Uber driver taking a patient to an abortion clinic. Plaintiffs, who need not have any connection to the matter, can win $10,000 in damages.
@D_historyMan
@KevinMKruse
I have read the NYT everyday since 1984, this just jumped out to me as a historian of slavery. That’s why we need the 1619 project?
Historian here, re Jan6 report accountability is most important to uphold the rule of law. The fact that Jefferson Davis got away with committing treason was a disaster for American democracy and Trump should not be allowed to go scot free for the Jan6 insurrection.
Historian here perhaps you don’t know that Jefferson and Jackson were seen as founders of the Democratic Party? Or that Washington was a Federalist? Or that TR left the Republican Party to form his own party? Or that the neo confederate modern GOP is not the party of Lincoln?
Historian here is there something in my public profile that made Tucker Carlson and now Bill O’Reilly think I would ever come on their show? And that too to deflect attention from Trumps crimes to the relentless persecution of Hunter Biden by the G Coup P? asking for a friend!
@GOPLeader
Historian here, You long stopped being the party of Lincoln, you are the party of neo Confederates, Nazis, proud boys, Q’ anon whack jobs, nativists, misogynists that molly coddle men who indulge in sex trafficking, and seditionists who facilitated a coup and attack our republic.
Historian of Reconstruction here, this was exactly the long term legal strategy used to undermined Reconstruction laws and amendments in the late nineteenth century. History does not repeat but it certainly rhymes in the United States.
The line between MAGA and the longtime right wing legal project can get awfully blurry. Still, right wing elites playing the long game of institution building are succeeding in a way MAGA causes aren't.
I talked to Steven Teles about this big picture. 6/
Historian of slavery and abolition here, hey I am in the New Tork Times today. This article irritated me and I dashed off a couple of lines to the editor, did not think they would publish it!
