Shaun Edwards agrees to stay as Wales defence coach | Sport | The Sunday Times I understand Shaun Edwards has agreed to stay on as Wales defence coach. Will work with Byron Hayward in Wayne Pivac’s backroom team.
England’a lawyer Richard Smith KC has done his job superbly and got his client off the hook. But at the same time 1000s more parents doubt if rugby is a sport which will look after their children’s health when they play. That is some price to pay for success.
Dear
@WorldRugby
How to scare off parents and reduce long-term participation in rugby.
Lesson 1.
Allow a tackle which fractures an opponents skull to go unpunished.
The end.
France’s Remi Grosso suffered a double skull fracture in an illegal double tackle by two All Blacks. No cards shown. A reminder rugby still has a long way to go.
Well done to dad for getting letter published in the Times highlighting the scandalous failure of UK Govt to procure drug Evusheld, which would enable 500,000 immunosuppressed citizens of our country to lead vaguely normal lives again.
@evusheld4theuk
#evusheldfortheuk
233 dead in UK now. We are on precisely same trajectory as Italy and people still just going about life as normal. Sorry to swear but we won the World Wars because of fucking DISCIPLINE and INTEGRITY. Start showing some UK! Stay home and keep distance.
The sooner rugby union moves away from the ludicrous notion professional players need to be “toughened up” in training during the week, the better. NFL virtually eradicated in season contact training a decade ago and has there game “gone soft”? Absolutely not.
Cannot praise Immanuel Feyi-Waboso enough for having the awareness and moral courage to declare a concussion which will see him miss out on an England cap. Some will bemoan “the game going soft”. But this is what leadership and cultural change looks like. Well done young man.
Can’t fathom the Sun non story on Stokes at all. Zero public interest, zero public appetite. Just a gross invasion of privacy with no redeeming elements. Embarrassing for anyone associated with newspapers and an appalling intrusion for his family.
Thanks for concern (most). I can confirm an altercation took place between me and Steve Diamond after he ‘offered me out’ tonight. I’ll recount in full at right time. Safe to say more play school than old school from a man I consider to be nothing more than a narcissistic bully.
Rob Baxter declines easy option of blaming referee for his side’s defeat and points finger at Exeter’s coaches and players. Why he’s in a different class to any other English DoR.
Rugby desperately needs media pundits without vested interests in whatever they are commenting on. So much conflicted commentary across so many of the big issues in the sport.
Just seen Steve Diamond described me as a “rogue journalist” in cosy non interview on BT Sport. Was described in same terms by many when I first reported on concussion 6 years ago. May have changed a few opinions on that front. Let’s see how this plays out.
Over the past decade or more I’ve tried hard to give the benefit of doubt to rugby’s administrators. Genuinely willing to believe they want to eradicate gratuitous head contact from the sport. But the Farrell verdict once again exposes a sport strong on narrative, weak on action.
Great quote from
@mrjamesob
yesterday (paraphrased) “it’s not about being an optimist or a pessimist, it’s about being a realist”. The public deserve facts.
and look at this from Ipsos Mori - by a margin of 43 to 28, the public thinks journalists are doing a good job of holding the government to account at its press conferences.
This really is shocking. What advice has Cowan-Dickie been given about the effect on his long-term neurological health? A boxer would have been stood down for 60 days.
Luke is unconscious for over 20 seconds. Possibly 40-60 secs. How can he play the following week? I am absolutely disgusted that the powers that be allow this to happen. A stain on our great game.
@premrugby
@EnglandRugby
@WorldRugby
World Rugby wants zero tolerance re head contact via high tackles but ‘moderate’ head butt ok because player was held. Kerevi recent assault on Halfpenny also unpunished. And we wonder why rugby’s in chaos...
Probably shouldn’t be surprised but Martin Johnson and Sam Warburton are outstanding TV studio pundits. Jamie Roberts also good. Brilliant post match analysis.
If rugby union is prepared to tolerate young men in their 30s and 40s developing terminal neurodegenerative conditions as a result of participating in the game it truly is finished.
Waiting 10 years for a conflicted governing to fund and puppeteer some research is simply not ok.
Christian Wade. The same size as Rory Underwood, Jason Robinson and Shane Williams but deemed too small for England in the modern age. What a shocking waste....
For the record I thought Kyle Sinckler was absolutely magnificent today. Two silly penalties as he tired only slightly blotted copybook. Apart from that he was a force of nature.
Having experienced it myself, I’m very sorry to hear the abuse
@Tommo33s
received after declaring he had dementia caused by repeated head injuries. None of those abusers can hold a candle to Steve as a man or rugby player. Bring it on. We won’t stop telling the truth.
Saracens say salary cap sanctions are “heavy handed”. They should talk to
@RichmondFC1861
Effectively relegated 9 divisions by the RFU after going into administration in 1999. Now that’s heavy handed.
Many are paid to obfuscate, deny and shield pro rugby union.
But the undeniable truth is that the game was never designed to be played by players this big, so frequently.
Anyone who has watched the sport evolve over past 2.5 decades knows this, deep down.
If they are honest.
Rugby players know the score: shoulder/forearm to head/neck = red card. Scott Barrett got what he deserved. Jerome Garces ought to be applauded for enforcing the law instead of being criticised. Will Greenwood
@SkySportsRugby
accuses him of 'hiding behind the laws.' What?
Don’t care about Eddie Jones’ record He was a narcissistic bully who burnt out and scarred many who worked with him. Horrible bloke. Good riddance. English rugby can do better.
Everyone ok with George North being knocked unconscious and playing on yesterday? At least the 4th time this has happened in a televised game since 2014. Rugby has run out of excuses for getting this so wrong, so often.
Whenever I’ve dealt with Geoffrey Boycott I’ve found him to be a nasty, misogynistic, xenophobic, sociopathic bully. Apart from that he’ll be a great loss to cricket and TMS and I wish him well.
When all professional rugby coaches and S&C staff wake up to fact these blokes don’t need to smash 7 bells out of each other week-in-week-out in training, the sport will begin to progress.
As a journalist it’s the fawning giggling from others in room when Trump attempts to belittle reporter which grates with me almost as much as his rhetoric.
Boycott’s comments on Rashid reveal far more about Boycott than Rashid. The man (Boycott) is a loathsome, bullying dinosaur who abuses his status to cruel effect. I hope Rashid takes 10-for.
No sympathy for Saracens’ top brass for their Premiership relegation but would absolutely love it if the club went on to win the Champions Cup in same season. Players, fans and backroom staff deserve some cheer.
This is brilliant work from the medics 👏
They rush on to stop Will Heinz trying to carry on the game after suffering a clear concussion.
Outstanding response time and the correct decision.
Tweet 2 of 2:
I’m incredibly grateful for all the support I have received in what has been a difficult 48 hours.
I hope Diamond will think twice before attempting to intimidate journalists in the future.
Billy Vunipola said he was rushed back after last broken arm, complained of pain in arm after Quins win last week. Now diagnosed with broken arm after Glasgow. 12 weeks out. Madness.
Police say the group known as ‘Saoradh’ are the political voice of the New IRA. They’ve been the focus of a backlash in Northern Ireland following Lyra McKee’s death. A clip from our piece on
@BBCNews
tonight
Don’t think there’s another serious professional sport where participants risk so much for such little reward. Pro rugby players deserve every penny they earn.
Perhaps the easiest myth to debunk re concussion is notion (parroted by many ex players) players “knew what they were signing up for”. Show me one shred of evidence pro rugby players have ever been advised they were or are at a higher risk of developing early onset dementia.
Lots of machismo from current and ex players re rugby’s gone soft nonsense. It’s patently and demonstrably untrue but don’t let that get in the way of being seen to be a tough guy.
The game we all love? Where head shots routinely went unpunished and an entire generation of players was unnecessarily exposed to long term risk of dementia. No thanks.
As Japan is vilified for suffering a typhoon I’m trying to recall the country which recently staged a severely weather-affected World Cup in another major sport.
And there in technicolour madness is football’s approach to concussion. As a Spurs fan I am utterly disgusted Vertonghen was allowed to play on. And we wonder why so many ex proa are dying with early onset dementia.
I’ve long since concluded the only way to halt pro rugby administrators dangerously short-sighted obsession with more and more matches is for top stars to collectively withdraw labour. Will take tenacity, leadership and bravery. Typical qualities of any rugby player.
England’s passing on the whole has been inaccurate and unsympathetic. We obsess so much about winning collisions and dominating tackles to the detriment of rugby’s single most important skill: passing the ball.
A very proud day as Concussed hits the shelves today. One person above all else helped make this book happen; my dad, Roy, who supported me on every step of a long and occasionally tortuous journey. RIP, dad. I’ll miss you. Thank you.
Delighted and unashamedly quite proud of how my new book Concussed; Sports Uncomfortable Truth looks. Available to pre order now and on general sale Sept 1.
Genuine question. Is Farrell missing 4 kicks from 4 enough evidence to suspect concussion and therefore undergo HIA? Didn’t spot any signs immediately post Lavanini.
Let’s be honest mens test Rugby is totally fucked - a brain trauma machine . When will someone shout stop. Nick White WTF? Couldn’t stand and he’s brought back on.
#irelandrugby
So the message is: fracture an opponent’s skull in a tackle and expect a slapped wrist in return. Wholly inadequate response from
@WorldRugby
sees sport take several steps backwards.
A very small handful of ex players are privileged enough to earn a living in the media. They are commercially conflicted and most will inevitably align with governing bodies to safeguard future earnings. PR is not journalism.
The litigation case has gone to court against the RFU, WRU & World Rugby today. It’s sad to hear some of the stories but I think it’s crazy to blame and sue those bodies, especially with some of those people on the list and using ambulance chasing lawyers on a no win no fee basis
Huge credit to Wales medics for spotting Moriarty's head injury. Very few inside stadium spotted it but replays showed he was clearly lurching. Good call.
Chris Robshaw as fired-up as he gets on Saracens’ “cheating”, how salary cap breach has made English rugby union “dirty” and how it even contributed to Conor O’Shea leaving Harlequins in 2016.
Sports administrators may have been able to sweep a cohort of ex players presenting with early onset dementia in their 60/70s (football) under carpet but a cohort of players presenting with dementia in their 40s (rugby union) will be a very different proposition.
Grosso fuming at World Rugby’s handling of his double skull fracture. Believes one rule for All Blacks and one rule for others. Hard to argue on evidence of this sorry case.
‘When Warner is banned there will not be a single tear shed for him by anyone at Cricket Australia. Many of those in high office cannot stand him.’ Ouch.
If you're a rugby fan, which I am, it's an uncomfortable truth to admit the short, medium and long-term damage done to pro players in training and on match-days. The fact those match-days are now scheduled twice weekly is, and I use this word advisedly, criminal.
What a brilliant ‘not out’ call by Paul Reiffel. Santner looked stone dead. No review. Pitched outside leg by less than a centimetre. Amazing umpiring.
So today we've had confirmation that the Premiership Rugby Final will take place on June 20, 2020...
... That is almost an entire year after some clubs started pre-season.
And then in July, there will be Test tours.

Sale alleging (apparently) I wasn’t at the AJ Bell Stadium on Saturday. It’s a fair cop. I just took a day trip to Stockport/Salford to see the Cathedral.
Very strong and overwhelmingly supportive response to this piece about the scandalous decision to extend English Premiership season by a month. A truly dreadful outcome for professional players in England.

After consulting friends, colleagues and above all my family, I have decided not to pursue this matter further.
I have made clear my thoughts on Steve Diamond and what I believe to be his persistent bullying behaviour, but have no interest in dragging out the issue.
Huge question for rugby and
@Nabasboer
do we celebrate seeing a child smashed head first into rock hard ground or search for ways to avoid? For what it’s worth, watching this makes me physically sick.
The “rugby’s gone soft” line is as polarising and unhelpful as “let’s ban tackling in schools”. Neither helps what is a serious conversation about improving safety in a sport which has changed beyond recognition in past 2 decades.
When did rugby shift from being a contact sport to a collision sport? Finding a way to dissipate collision forces + reversing confrontational trend key to improving spectacle and, more importantly, making rugby safer. Blanket ban on contact in schools not the answer in my view.
Could I also give a shout out to
@BristolBears
stadium announcer. Calm, measured with none of the hyperbolic screaming nonsense we’ve been forced to accept at so many rugby grounds. More power to you!
My piece on Steve Diamond’s authoritarian grip on Sale and the unhealthy lack of scrutiny rattled some cages yesterday. Am told there could be changes afoot today.
Saracens statement on club website states long standing director Nick Leslau is standing down to “focus his time on new initiatives”. This is, to say the least, interesting timing.
Don’t understand why Saracens standing Owen Farrell down to be with his wife as she gives birth is worthy of praise or criticism. Employer grants employee paternity leave. Most importantly, hope mother and baby are well.
Concussed: Sport's Uncomfortable Truth is the story of my fight to raise awareness of the risks posed by brain injuries in Rugby Union and other contact sports and the corporate efforts to shut me and others down. On general sale Aug 31 or pre order here.
Anyone else panic planting? So far I’ve put in 86 seed potatoes, 18 broad bean seeds, 12 plum tomato, 18 courgette (up 12 from 2019!), 12 runner bean and 24 beetroot. Believe me guys, it’s the future!
