It's easy to put Kanté's extraordinary ability to pop up everywhere on the pitch down to his stamina and 'energy'- when, in fact, it is because he reads the game better than almost everyone else. He not 'everywhere' - he's in the right place, almost all of the time.

I've just read another thread by a journalist talking about a - mostly positive - experience of Qatar 2022 and marvel, if that's the word, at the ability of people to blank out completely what is outside of their own personal, self-centered, quasi-solipsistic experience.

I'm told that a few accounts are putting out on Twitter purported print-outs of the 2021 Ballon d'Or ranking. Note to all concerned: these are *all* fakes, for the simple reason that we, @francefootball , have never, ever, printed any before the 'reveal', even for internal use.

Fifa, what is it good for? Absolutely nothing. "Saudi state oil giant to become Fifa’s biggest-paying sponsor. Deal worth up to £84 million a year and comes after nation was given free run to host 2034 World Cup". By the excellent @martynziegler .

The sycophancy which characterises the Swiftian media cult has no precedent in pop music history, a reflection of the chasm between the critical appreciation of her work and what it's actually worth. The perfect star for the age of meaningless hyperbole.

Infantino chewing the fat with MBS at some sportswashing boxing bout I really couldn't care less about, days after the Saudis sent a woman to jail for 34 years for some tweets. If you thought Russia 2018 and Qatar 2022 were/are bad, get ready for Saudi Arabia 2034.

I'm astonished that Conte has to justify Terry's guard of honour in a dead game. Football wasn't betrayed or besmirched. Relax, guys.

He lost; but, given the obstacles he had to overcome, he's probably had the finest tournament of his career, consistently making the right choices, showing imagination and daring alongside more traditional traits. Happy to eat humble pie, as it's rarely tasted so sweet.

New. Mystery surrounds 8XBet, Manchester City’s new Asian betting partner. It has many of the hallmarks of a fake company: a founder who doesn’t seem to exist online and a CEO appearing to hide behind a stolen avatar.

It is totally irresponsible to spread out news that van Dijk is out for 7-8 months on the back of one single report and absolutely zero confirmation from the club. The injury is 'not good'. It might be that serious. We don't know. So we should all shut up about it until we do.
