Finally I seem to be able to put something into words. It’s a very rare occasion to be able to both let the absolute horrors out, as well as revisit the familiar, somber, innocent tones (much like the beginning of AW1).

For a long time, I shied away from fantasy games, thinking they weren't exactly my thing. After having heard the stuff
@Borislav_Slavov
had done for Baldur's Gate 3, I installed it yesterday, out of curiosity. Woke up early to "test a little" & 5 h later: WOOOW ❤️
@larianstudios
We took a lot of inspiration from both Evil Within and Evil Within 2 when developing Alan Wake 2. They are both excellent horror games and I'm very sad we will not get to see a continuation of the franchise from

I want to mention two virtuoso producers behind the ”Yötön yö”. Mr. Ilkka Wirtanen stunned me with his guitar improvisation (IG: ilkka_wirtanen) and Ms. Noraturi used her vocal skills to lift the choruses (IG: noraturi.wav).

Love the music in Remedy's games? Us too! We speak with Petri Alanko about working on the music to the studio's games from Alan Wake forward, and building a special connection to the gaming worlds he's inhabited.
Alan Wake 2 has 2 layers - separate at first, slowly leaking and intertwining into each other, uniting, then separating. What a thematical treat for a composer! 😍
Thanks,
@remedygames
and
@SamLakeRMD
- I loved doing every single frame and second. AW2 is very dear to me. 🌀(2/2)
Gaffa tape piano riser prepping loooong ago. Other playing methods included a lawnmower, a torch and a concrete drill. Dark Place has some of this, as an IR/convolution.
accessible and a wee bit more "easy listening", but the piano ostinato notes really were drawn from that one old iron gate close to my house, by the meadow where the deers and other animals roam. Even left a dictaphone there to record them. It got eaten beyond repairs... (5/5)
If you ever come to Finland and leave without eating a jar of Kolmen Kaverin vanilla ice cream, you miss something important. It’s perfection. Not too heavy, but tasty as hell.
the skipping, clicking, stuttering noise only - of course, I still had a little tonality left in it, but that only added some "depth" to the resulting sounds. I guess what we did with that led us to start baking the music concept for Quantum Break, as some of the ideas were (3/5)
make it skip & force it stutter, entering a berserk mode, but as a friend of mine noticed what I was doing, he did a few tricks + installed four switches onto it to provide skipping & stuttering without physically shaking the thing. I then removed tonal components and used (2/5)
taken a bit further in the QB soundtrack - and with that one, I fell in love with turning atonal and dissonant sounds into more accessible ones without actually mangling them beyond recognition. QB's piano theme was a rusty gate "playing the notes", but it had to be more (4/5)
Oh yeah! Thanks,
@NYVGCC
for giving

and

nominations in many, many categories - especially "Best Music In A Game". I appreciate this.
“I made some quite 'difficult' sounds that even a pro would struggle to reproduce!"
In the new issue of Computer Music, we speak to composer Petri Alanko about scoring the sublime Alan Wake 2, organising his synths and developing 'classical trance’
If all goes well, Alan Wake Soundtrack is back in Spotify and other services this Friday (31st May)- yes! It took longer than we expected, but it all should be clear now. Thank you for your patience. :-)
I think a friend just came up with a perfect name for my studio.

My GOTY is hands down Alan Wake 2. I could not believe my eyes when I got to the musical part in the middle. It is maybe the most memorable scene in any game I have ever played in my life.
I AM WATCHING SO MANY VIDEOS OF PEOPLE REACTING TO THE "WE SING" PART OF ALAN WAKE 2 (IT COUNTS AS WORK) AND IT IS THE BEST FUCKING THING EVER. THE PART IN THE GAME OBVIOUSLY. BUT EVERYONE'S REACTIONS MOST OF ALL. I'M SO HAPPY FOR EVERYONE WHO MADE IT AND EVERYONE WHO LOVES IT
Btw if you’re into composing for wide variety of media - including games & beyond - you should check out Composer Magazine. They go a little deeper than others; on their site there’s a metric effton of interesting stuff & music makers - feed your head and listening stream!
I am so happy
#AlanWake
2 was announced. So, so happy. It means Alan will have a lot to do to kick some ass, but it also means he has a chance after that long silence. Practice makes perfect, never give up, no matter what. Go, Alan. Your typewriter’s all set up.
Hey, someone’s talking about mostly
@alanwake

@ControlRemedy
and Quantum Break, too - next Sat 6th Jan 2024 on BBC 3 at 3pm UK. This was probably the hardest interview so far; I seldom go quiet, here… a few times. (Survived. Chocolate helped.)

The graphics have improved significantly. I can now see clearly they all are brothers. Or sons and fathers. Unclebrothers. Something. Something Darwin warned us about. (Download link missing, tho.)
Someone noticed devs copy/paste character movement/animation from game 1 to game 2 (same franchise). Composer: ”Everytime I have to play piano, I always rebuild a piano from whatever I happen to have at hand. After the track is done, I’ll burn the fucker down.” Sheeeesh.

@SamLakeRMD
This took me by surprise, a bad and sad surprise. His voice was a true one-of-a-kind, iconic and pretty much a baseline for all other male VO voices - all of which paled in comparisön. What a terrible, terrible loss. 😢
Some evil things done to a 50€ piano. It’s only dragged around on a concrete floor here. Soon after this one suffered a fate better described as ”blood eagle for pianos” 😄 Loved every sound.
A detail I added in
#AlanWake2
is that if you step on mud when you enter inside you will leave dirty steps, if it's raining you will leave water. If you step on blood you will leave blood steps, that also work for NPC and animals, I made decals for naked foot , wolf, deer etc
Awesome news, especially considering the guidelines drawn from the verdict could be applied to music world as well. (Especially now that AI services and applications pop up here and there, and material ”is just everywhere”.)
I won. I won my appeal.
The Luxembourg court has ruled that Jeff Dieschburg infringed upon my copyright when he used my work without consent.
Using a different medium was irrelevant. My work being 'available online' was irrelevant. Consent was necessary. 1/
About the
#DICEAwards
: I feel extremely humbled just for having been among the nominees - and this year was a really good year in game music, making this whole thing even more unusual. This was a labour of love, from a concept to its conceiving. Thank you for your support.
Having spent two evenings in a loud room with BAFTA visitors and guests, being a synaesthete makes me see only migraine-inducing white noise strobe light flashes. Hope this ends by 2030. 😆 Alan Wake 2 jump scares 24-7-365. Oh gods.
@alanwake
@remedygames
Not to mention I had to leave my then tour gear storage space behind after the overseer of the building found out whatever the hell I was doing. The shame still stings. At some point, a biography, but not yet. 2070 maybe. 🥺🤣
Oh thank you a lot,
@GameSpot
!!! - "Alan Wake 2's soundtrack is dark and foreboding, and that's just the way we like it. And yet, you're getting so much more than a spike in your adrenaline…”
@alanwake
I think it’s about Alan Wake II tattoo time at some point. But what would it be? Left arm might need something.
(Maybe just a squirrel? A pine?)
(Coffee cup?)
(Thermos… nope.)
(Hmm… flashlight?)
(No, Nightingale won’t fit in there and he’s a little too gray...)
#AlanWake2
I love the fact
@SamLakeRMD
mentions ”...dreaming up some pretty disturbing, weird, yet sublime material...” because that’s what it actually is. I personally don’t remember if I have ever done anything as twisted as what is going to be

@NordicGame
- it was a blast x 3 (
@alanwake
getting three awards: Best Audio, Nordic Game Of The Year and Best Art) and I met a lot of really great people, left with my heart full. Just _how many_ awesome restaurants are there, I must ask?
The most disgusting form of entertainment: roasts. Especially artificially lengthened, alcohol-ridden bullshit “roasts” with “guests” who have the personality, the capabilities and the charisma of a teleprompter. Just plain school bully stuff.
What a strange world this is.
Both have enough gold discs to not count them - I mean this. Like, dozens. I’m thoroughly happy to have had them help me out of a tough place with their skills and gifts. Such marvellous people, and you should check out their other stuff, too. You’ll be surprised. 2/2

Pitäkää puolentoista litran vesipullo messissä. Jos puhe ei auta, kaatakaa nuotioon. ”Miks sammutit?” ”No sammutinhan vaan.” Samalla kielellä kun vastaa, ymmärrys syntyy. Dorka ei ymmärrä järkeilyä eikä kieltojen perustelua. (Lienen hieman jyrkkä, pahoittelen, kokemus opettanut.)

@remedygames
And that, my friends, is how
@SamLakeRMD
was born. A tall, slender pale guy brought in a parcel, left it on the floor his hands shaking, muttering the words “it’s your turn now to guard him”. Silently sobbing, he disappeared in the night. We opened the box.
I cannot put my finger exactly on the spot where I got alienated from the genre in the first place, years ago, but obviously it's never too late to open new doors. And what awesome, soul grabbing doors!
About the sound sources for
#controlremedy
: some rhythmic atmospheres were done by putting temp dialog through a convolution IR provided by the library made for Alan Wake’s American Nightmare. One of the screeching sounds: bowed Quantum Break steelcase, stretched and distorted.
@Kranitoko
There’s also a ”warning, something really bad is about to happen” version: e→f→h (or b)→c - but with a glide, so it resembles a warning siren.
Re: Alan Wake soundtrack disappeared from Spotify (and probably a few other places too) - good news, it’s coming back! A bunch of very helpful gentlemen are ensuring it will return to the same download/streaming sites. I’ll let you know as soon as I know more.
Yesterday,
@midgeure1
in Vienna. Talking, playing, singing. He sounded like a true gentleman - and we were listening with tears in our eyes. That _voice_! I found out about Ultravox in 1981 as a kiddo and when Rage In Eden came out, no turning back. Keep on rocking, sir!
Awwight yours truly and

are discussing

related things (in Finnish, sorry) tomorrow 24th Oct on the Yleisradio airwaves. - I’ll probably spill a lot of (coffee) beans, again.
Holy shit. Control will be out next month. (It feels odd to not have spent the past four years on a game. I could get used to this feeling.)
@ControlRemedy
Whoah. Twitter has exploded. One would think

Bombastic, bizarre, and beautiful, Control is more than just another day at the office - and it’s IGN’s Game of the Year 2019.
Here’s why we chose this unique title for our Game of the Year:
I once decided to do something for our singles leaking to pirate sites before the actual release date, ruining the planned release window and promotion beats. It seemed we could do nothing, and our investigations were fruitless. Then I had an idea. 1/6
