After a 30 year interlude I returned to the Parisian military museum Les Invalides. Its been extensively modernized in that time frame and is now absolutely world class and a must if you have a vague interest in military history. A thread on some of my favourite bits.

Oryx's documented Russian equipment loss figures are now just 24 short of the 10,000 loss mark. If we apply a 1.5-3.0 loss multiplier we are clearly in military disaster territory. "Russia - 9976, of which: destroyed: 6446, damaged: 303, abandoned: 389, captured: 2838"

I was last in Rosyth in sept 21 when it was just an empty hall with a Royal Marine band so quite a dramatic change. HMS Venturer getting close to out fitting and HMS Active will be more recognizable as a ship when I return later in the year.

And another sale of the Type 31, a well considered design that can evolve to the threat. Good planning by Poland as they can use MBDAs CAMM on this and Narew GBAD. Every sale reduces the sub system supply chain cost for all the partner nations so good news for everyone.

The obsession over platform types and numbers came at the expense of honesty on infra, skills, IT, comms, logistics and other enablers. The SofS has been proven right, you need a rounded capability with an industrial base for a capable, sutainable, military force.

The @RoyalNavy have now moved back on-board @HMSDragon after she completed her Power Improvement Project (PIP) installation, overseen by our experts. With the improvement work concluded, responsibility of the ship passes back to the Navy ahead of sea trials later this year.

@thehistoryguy Dan, our warped memory of WW2 is now holding back the UK in a similar way that Russia is trapped in its Nationalist grip. Do a proper low brow series that explains that the popular memory is simply just a myth told to sooth over the huge cost of the war.

With some rare examples wargames just ignore logistics. Wargamers can all agree that logistics is everything and then we go straight back to lining up regiments and examining CRTs. The reality is that logistic decisions are a big part of operation discussions.

Wargames are largely terrible at capturing political direction and imperatives. Many of our games still think in politically sterile environments; whilst in reality senior leaders have to reflect the concerns of their society and they have the final decision.

This confirms my fear that the UK is only able to field a plus sized brigade in the event of a crisis. Despite this our leadership spend their time trying to expand our strategic ambitions even as our capabilities recede. It's text book "how wars are lost" stuff.

Most wargames are about solving puzzles rather than addressing problems. In reality when a decision reaches senior levels itโ€™s no longer a puzzle but a problem of which you are just being asked to approve the last remaining bad option. If you are lucky you get two bad options.
