Much of my work is grounded in my identity as an Anishinaabe Kwe; however, that’s not all I am. I think it’s important to recognize that I am a complex and entire human being outside of my work. More folx need to understand this.
I know I’ve tweeted/said this before but I’ll say it again…
As a society we would all be better off if we changed our mindset from the Western ways of “I have rights” and moved towards how many Indigenous cultures view it as “I have obligations.” /1
Got catcalled outside of a coffee shop (yes, even wearing a mask) with my kid on my heels.
My kid: “Fuck you you slimely asshole that’s my mom you treat her with respect.”
I’m gonna call this a parenting win.
@IDontBlog
Nine and thirteen and she’s upset it’s referenced in a movie? If girls are old enough to experience their periods boys are old enough to be aware. Good gods if we raise another generation of men who don’t understand bodies I’ll loose my ever loving mind.
215 Indigenous kids in graves in Kamloops Indian Residential School.
Some as young as 3.
This is but one location.
There were 15 residential schools in Ontario.
And, 130 across the country.
And, Canadians seriously want to debate the use of the word “genocide”.
I don’t think Canadians have realized that we will never have an accurate number of the lives lost at residential schools.
We, as a community, know the stories passed down from survivors about incinerators.
Numbers will never reflect the truth.
And, that should horrify you.
Trying to wrap my head around the fact that I’m 2019 these young Indigenous girls had to endure racist taunts from grown adult spectators. Truthfully I’m still struggling with it.
The realization that Canadians paid upwards of $25 million for the Pope’s visit full well knowing that residential school survivors were never going to see the $25 million they were owed by the Catholic Church is next level colonial harm.
Marieval Indian Residential School was closed in 1997.
Any individual who says “this was in the past” and “get over it” needs to realize that 1997 was just 24 years ago. Which in the grand scheme of things isn’t long ago.
Have some compassion.
And, if you can’t be quiet.
Again, Indigenous knowledge is often discounted; however, we’ve been taking care of these lands for millennia prior to colonization. A few hundred years of “colonial progress” and we’re facing a climate emergency…
I look around at so many of our societal problems and recognize that our systems are built off this model and therefore are working as designed.
If we shifted to recognizing that we have obligations to others and not just our relations but future generations I strongly /2
believe we would be better off.
I recognize for some this may be a radical view; however, I struggle with trying to identify where along the line did caring for someone else’s well being become a radical concept? /end
Non-Indigenous folx really need to hold their tongues or rather keep their fingers off the keyboards right now regarding James Smith Cree Nation’s tragedy if they can’t do so without being harmful.
Honestly, it’s tragic enough we don’t need your hot takes and additional harm.
If you’re more upset by graffiti on churches than thousands and thousands (because we’re not done recovering these sweet children) Indigenous children in graves then you are a part of the problem.
Full stop.
“Blueberry Pie” is the longest word in Anishinabemowin at 53 letters. The language is descriptive so
miinibaashkiminasiganibiitooyingwesijiganibakwezhigan translates to blueberry sauce that is put between two layers of bread that face each other. This has been a

fact
I want to articulate this well, and forgive me if I don’t but it’s hard as I’m just overwhelmed. So many of us are.
The news about Kamloops Indian Residential School is not new. It’s simply not. But the numbers are. And they’re shocking. /1
I’ve had some time to unpack the situation in British Columbia in which Indigenous girls under the age of 10 in care have had IUDs inserted into their bodies.
And I’m livid.
Girls as young as 10 do not need IUDs.
Girls as young as 10 are not having sex consensually. /1
Can we please just skip Canada Day this year. I don’t really feel like celebrating 153 years of continued oppression. And, honestly it’s a little disheartening to see folx be so patriotic given what’s going on. Perhaps folx should reflect on what they’re actually celebrating.
The more I learn of the events of Lahaina during the Maui fires the more angered I become. These folx were largely abandoned and those in positions of power failed them on so many many levels.
Most tragic is how the children of the community who are now largely missing /1
I encourage non-Indigenous folx not to centre themselves in discussions around the Pope’s visit. Please recognize that you cannot accept this apology because it’s not meant for you. Your views/faith can and should take a backseat to survivors who we should uplift and support.
I think it’s important to note many of us, especially BIPOC, LGTBQ2S & disabled folx didn’t set out to be “activists”. We do the work we do to help and protect the ones we love, our communities and ourselves out of necessity. And, emotional labour often comes at a personal cost.
Just a gentle reminder that it’s not unpatriotic to call your country out for genocide (both historical and on doing) and harms perpetuated against Indigenous peoples. And, it’s certainly not unpatriotic to push for justice for those peoples.
And, there it is. The first “probably mentally ill” remark.
No. Let’s squash that here and now.
Let’s not conflate white supremacy with mental illness.
White supremacy is a choice, mental illness is not.
This was domestic terrorism. Period.
@MillerStream
“First Nations Indians” yeah, don’t ever call me an Indian. Also, I would be mindful who you are attributing this to. Unless anyone a) takes responsibility or b) is caught then your presumption is harmful.
751.
Seven hundred fifty one.
Letting that number sink in.
251 Kamloops.
104 Brandon.
38 Regina.
35 Lestock.
180 Carlisle.
And now 751…
That’s just a handful of schools. So many more are to come.
I’m in awe Canadians that need to be told this is bad behaviour and in poor taste. How do we not know how to read the room by now? Showing up to a powwow today and showcasing your patriotism/nationalism is just violent. The community treated these folx kinder than they deserved.
Bracing for Marieval Indian Residential School tomorrow.
Non-Indigenous folx to kindly respect the community and give us space.
And, please don’t make it about you or expect labour from us. We can’t even grieve without being asked to perform lately and it’s exhausting.
If Canadians could do some basic work on just general knowledge when it comes to Indigenous folx so we can actually progress in conversations that would be great. Just this past week:
* capitalize “i” on Indigenous;
* don’t use “our” prior to Indigenous; /1
So, this morning after repeatedly misgendering my 6’1 son b/c of his hair and refusing to accept the correction a white woman started crying over *his* orange shirt and explaining to him how many kids were “out there in graves”.
My son: “It’s my culture, I know. Please stop.”
As an Indigenous person in this country I’m just going to flat out say this week is going to exhaust many of us.
I’m limiting socials & interactions w/ folx outside of community.
Awareness is great but comes at a cost. Be gentle interacting as this resurfaces trauma for many.
A hundred more babies confirmed that never made it home…
That’s 315 b/w two schools.
There were 130 schools across the country.
And, Canadians want to continue to debate the word genocide; tell us to get over it; ignore intergenerational trauma & current issues.
Enough.
Tonight on APTN National News: Over 100 bodies detected at the site of former residential school in Brandon, Manitoba.
Lawyers are requesting those involved in the Kamloops residential school be investigated
An inside look at the life of Joyce Echaquan.
IF YOU ARE GOING TO DO A LAND ACKNOWLEDGEMENT MAKE SURE YOU CAN PRONOUNCE THE NATIONS.
Brought to you by my severe annoyance that I just heard one that every single Indigenous word was beyond butchered.
I’m really sorry but I am truly struggling that in 2021 we can recognize that we’ve normalized eugenics as part of this pandemic and somehow aren’t doing everything in our power to shift that.
James Smith Cree Nation
#Saskatchewan
called a state of emergency in response to multiple murders & assaults of members of their community.
It’s important to highlight we can talk about these tragedies & the search for the suspects w/o problematic or racist language. /1
If you call for my death and/or the death of my kin by suggesting you’d run us down w/ a vehicle I think it’s only fair I alert your employer to the kind of person they’ve hired. And, given my experience today I can say they’re not too happy to receive such reports & swift to act
To be an Indigenous woman in Canada today is difficult. It’s hard being confronted with the juxtaposition of my value within my (Indigenous) community vs. society at large.
But, that’s not what this thread is about. I’ve seen a lot of arguments against
#SearchTheLandfill

Far too many Canadians have a bigger issue with the word genocide than they actually do with the genocide itself. And, that’s just absolutely heartbreaking.
Over the coming days I need Canadians to remember that we’re not any better than the US. Kyle Rittenhouse may have just gotten away with murder. But so did Gerald Stanley. The system is not broken, it was designed this way. And it’s time to reevaluate that.
As much as I’m glad Myles Sanderson was caught I’m struggling w/ seeing Canadians celebrate his death along w/ the casual and not so casual racism they’re so freely sharing.
The disparity on how we view white perpetrators of violence vs. racialized ones has never been so clear.
As an Anishinaabe Kwe I don’t feel comfortable participating in a counter protest. It’s simply not safe.
I’m a visible target, as are many racialized folx. And, should things go south who do you think will be arrested?
Allies this is where you use your power and privilege.
@arichardson_phi
@AngelaSterritt
I was coming to say something similar. I’ve found they see themselves as the default. Everyone and everything else needs labelled except them.
This headline is so gross. Police shot a Métis man. He was killed by police. Just like the dog. Can we show the same amount of remorse for the native man than we do the dog? Or is that too much to ask?
It’s possible to discuss Palestine and Israel without being Islamophobic or antisemitic.
You can support Palestine’s rights for self determination and denounce Hamas. You can feel for Israel’s loss and acknowledge it’s a settler colonial state with a history of genocidal /1
Tonight my baby Bear became the second generation to graduate from high school and been accepted to college. Every cycle I’ve broken has been for him. And, his children. And, his children’s children. He’s a strong Anishinaabe inini and I am so proud.
Non-Indigenous folx please kindly check with Indigenous folx for permission before you unload all your thoughts, feelings and guilt about Kamloops, Brandon, Regina, Lestock and Carlisle - or your lack of knowledge of residential schools until the last few weeks. /1
Another, 160 Indigenous children confirmed in unmarked graves. My heart is w/ the Penelakut Tribe & other Nations they’d belong to.
We know these announcements are coming but they’re never easy - nor should they be. Big emotions each time- grief, relief, anger, sadness…
Is any parent really focused on grades right now? Because my sons best right now is good enough. And the fact that we’re grading kids at this point in time seems inequitable and wrong as we’re assigning a number value to how well they’re coping w/ the global pandemic.
My sons first day back at high school at
@TVDSB
yesterday & the “measures” we were told by
@Sflecce
would be put in place weren’t evident.
He didn’t receive repackaged RATs or the cloth masks we were told would be distributed. His teachers didn’t have N95s.
We were lied to.
I think what a lot of folx don’t quite understand is social justice isn’t meant to make you feel comfortable. It’s quite the opposite really. It’s meant to make you confront the injustices in this world which is inherently an uncomfortable process. /1
So, when does
@SarahJama_
receive an apology and reinstatement from
@MaritStiles
and the party for saying the exact same thing weeks ago?
It’s not lost on me she’s been more knowledgeable on the issue a lot sooner than the rest of the party - and actually dared to speak up.
@MorpheBrushes
@JeffreeStar
I’m wondering if
@MorpheBrushes
did their research on Jeffree prior to partnering as Jeffree has a long and sordid history of being problematic, specifically to BIPOC folx, women and trans folx. So to show my solidarity I can’t possibly support the brand any longer.
Gentle reminder Indigenous (First Nations, Métis and Inuit) are not a monolith. Each of our experiences may have similar threads but also are vastly different; therefore, you will see a range of responses to the Pope’s “apology”. Please do not weaponize Indigenous people /1
I’m so tired of crying over lost relations. I’m so tired of relations turning into hashtags.
Tonight Rodney Levi joined the club none of us want to be a part of. Rodney is the fifth Indigenous person murdered by the RCMP/police in Canada since APRIL.
#RodneyLevi
Girls as young as 10 have been let down by society because of systemic racism and apathy.
Honestly, I could go on but I truly don’t have the capacity. I’m angry. I’m tired. I fucking demand change. This is disgusting & wouldn’t happen if they were white. Enough is enough. /end
Just a reminder when it comes to Indigenous issues Indigenous people are the experts. And Indigenous opinions will always hold more weight than non-Indigenous ones.
And, it’s best to listen and learn.
It absolutely breaks my heart that two Métis men were killed while hunting to feed their families (during the
#COVID19
crisis). I wish I had something eloquent to say but I’m at a loss.
It’s dehumanizing, demoralizing and debilitating to watch the amount of Canadians cling to the idea of a day.
Within our communities it’s common to cancel events out of respect. In the past few weeks we’ve been given thousands of reasons to mourn. /1
This is your daily reminder police do not prevent crime. They show up after it happens. Crime prevention starts and is most effective when you fund social programs and create opportunity.
Don’t say “Canada’s Indigenous people” or “our Indigenous people” or similar possessives to describe the Indigenous people that are in this country. It is paternalistic and implies Canada owns Indigenous people. Use Indigenous people in Canada. Thanks for coming to my TEDTalk.
Canadians need to read this. And, then I invite you to reflect on why this isn’t on every news channel across the country. This country fails Indigenous women from coast to coast on so many levels.
#MMIWG2S
#NoMoreStolenSisters
Girls as young as 10 are being put into care situations where they’re preyed on.
Girls as young as 10 have social workers protecting their abusers.
Girls as young as 10 have doctors performing invasive procedures bodies so they don’t become pregnant by their abusers. /2
I wish this country would move from the sympathy mindset to the solidarity mindset as it pertains to Indigenous issues on the whole.
Solidarity includes ACTION.
My fourteen year old has taken up residence in my bed. I’m not sure if it’s for his benefit or mine but here we are.
I reflected on the last time he did this and realized it was during the Gerald Stanley trial.
I’m so angry I can’t isolate him from this. Shame on you Canada.
Why is calling out problematic behaviour somehow viewed as being worse than the behaviour itself? Serious question here friends. I don’t understand why me saying ‘hey this isn’t okay’ is a bigger deal than the initial behaviour.
Indigenous women are not disposable.
Indigenous women are not invisible.
Indigenous women are invaluable.
Indigenous women should be seen, heard, and listened to.
I’d like to take a moment to remind folx that today is
#MMIWG2S
day. And, with that I encourage you to centre Indigenous Women, Girls and 2 Spirit voices. I encourage non-Indigenous folx to step back and just uplift those voices today instead of creating your own posts/threads.
Dear Non-Indigenous folx,
We exist 365 days a year. Not just on September 30th, June 21st, July 1st or May 5th. You can book us for engagements outside these days. It’s allowed. I promise.
And, please don’t wait until two weeks before an event to try and book us. /1
Many marginalized folx have realized that Netanyahu is redefining a blueprint that could have huge impacts outside of Palestine and Israel.
Our solidarity and voices are important to the plight of Palestine and their lives - but also in ways I don’t think we have quite realized.
Two things to remember this morning:
If your ‘freedom’ relies on oppressing others it’s not actually freedom.
AND
Being inconvenienced is not the same as being oppressed. Please stop conflating the two.
* don’t say “Indigenous Canadians”;
* Aboriginal and Indian are outdated;
* yes, it was indeed genocide as per the UN’s definition; and
* read the TRC recommendations as a start.
And, you can correct other non-Indigenous folx on these simple things. That’s allyship.
I’m pretty well sick of the “we’re all in this together” line. Look we all may be in the same storm, but we sure as hell aren’t in the same boat. Some of you are in yatch’s and others are in lifeboats. We are not weathering the storm with the same access and resources. Period.
I cannot believe months & months later our communities are still having to advocate to
#SearchTheLandfill
to recover Indigenous women who have been killed by a confessed murderer. It’s disgusting we have to plea w/ officials to do the right thing.
Watching this I wonder how we, as Indigenous peoples, could have ever be painted as a people’s who didn’t know how to care for or not deeply love and respect our children.
Much of the symbolism in this will be lost on non-Indigenous folx but I hope it still makes an impact.
The most beautiful burial I’ve ever witnessed. After over a 100 yrs the children who died at Carlisle Indian Boarding School are laid to rest by the youth of this generation. Wrapped in buffalo robes and back to the comfort of Grandmother Earth in their ancestral Lakota lands.
I’m finding folx are asking what they can do to be better allies to Indigenous folx when they haven’t read either the TRC or MMIWG2S report. Read the docs. There are 94 & 231 recommendations contained w/i.
There’s your answer. And, be mindful of your demands to Indigenous folx.
conditions. No one should have to worry about being coerced into signing away ownership of their property at a time like this.
And, I’m beyond disappointed in news outlets who seem to continually centre white survivors and stories. I’m sorry but there are more important /3
Can I just say not all women who have ascended to power deserve to be praised. Yes, you broke the glass ceiling; however, if your policies are harmful to other women and marginalized populations folx it came at a cost to others and I’m not interested.
I struggle seeing all the anti-masking, anti-vaxxing, anti-“lockdown” folx rally who are prolonging this for the rest of us.
Time and time again my observation is these crowds are largely white screaming that they’re oppressed when they don’t know the meaning of the word. /1
I’m about an inch away from emailing my kids teacher “Your expectations aren’t realistic b/c you aren’t teaching him. Fail him b/c his mental health is more important than getting his grade up in the middle of a pandemic.” This is why our teachers need to be trauma informed.
@BuserBrooks
Colonizers going to colonize, huh? You really should just leave the Indigenous folx of Papua New Guinea alone. Especially in a pandemic. Honestly, your very presence could kill them.

If these 215 children have lived I wonder who they’d be. Many would be elders by now. What knowledge would they have carried? What gifts could they have brought to this world /7
... it’s like folx don’t know how or why the RCMP came to be.
Indigenous folx know. And they knew the RCMP was prepared to show force. I’m just saddened that it’s taking leaked documents from the RCMP for Canadians to believe it.
and presumed dead were failed. And, how they and their families continue to be failed in the recovery efforts.
Hearing news of how politicians, government officials and FEMA are behaving towards survivors is beyond disheartening. Help should be immediate and without /2
I’ve watched the lack of support and discourse around the Maui Fires in Lahaina over the last week. Now Fort Smith, Hay River & other predominantly Indigenous communities in Northwest Territories are impacted by fire.
It’s hard not to be discouraged by the pattern emerging.

Maybe we should discuss how long it took for rescue efforts to begin? And, why there was such a delay in this.
Or we can discuss how deaths are being perpetually underreported.
