Ontario has become unlivable. To rectify this, I'm tabling a set of motions alongside
@hamiltonacorn

@fordnation
to:
-Eliminate Above Guideline Rent Increases 1/
Thirteen days ago, I called for an immediate ceasefire and de-escalation by the Israeli government, which had begun a horrific siege on Palestinians in Gaza. Since I made that statement, Israel has only escalated its assault on millions of Gazans. 1/
This is BONKERS. I was there last night and that's not what happened. People are doing all they can to get you to stop sending weapons to Israel in our names. You've shown no leadership and over a million Palestinians being ethnically cleansed. Stop tweeting. Do something useful.
The demonstration at Mount Sinai Hospital yesterday was reprehensible. Hospitals are places for treatment and care, not protests and intimidation.
I strongly condemn this display of antisemitism. In Toronto and across Canada, we stand with Jewish communities against this hate.
I'm reflecting on my role as a politician who is participating in this settler colonial system, and I ask that all politicians do the same.

Currently focused on rebuilding the constituency office. Thank you to everyone in community for the love and support. I'll be posting updates soon. In the meantime, it's all eyes on Gaza!!!!
to silence workers, students, educators, and peace-loving people who dare to support Palestine. To every person taking risks to speak up for Palestinian dignity and safety, I see you, I hear you, and I am with you.
This woman uses the age old colonial trope of claiming anyone who lived on any land pre-colonization didn't build anything meaningful on that land...likening Palestinians to savages and making it sound like they aren't people. Modern day Christopher Columbus BS.
NDP minister
@selinarobinson
justifying genocide by calling Palestine “a crappy piece of land with nothing on it”. Hateful, bigoted remarks that should result in her immediate resignation
@Dave_Eby
I ground my words in the realities of Israeli apartheid, and Israel’s ongoing domination and occupation of Palestinian lands. Governments and institutions in Canada are trying to use their weight to silence us 6/
I restate my call for an immediate ceasefire by Israeli forces, and for the immediate restoration of food, water, fuel, and electricity to Gaza. I applaud the many elected officials in Canada who have joined this call in recent days, and I hope even more of you will speak out. 5/
The Ford government has nothing meaningful to say about these atrocities, and has now targeted me to distract from its own scandals. Those of us committed to Palestinian life refuse to be distracted. 4/
Over the next few days I intend to make it to as many campus encampments as I can to be in solidarity with students protesting for an end to genocide. Heading to McGill today, then UOttawa, then hopefully UofT and some others.
Insha'Allah Palestine will be free in our lifetime.
The Israeli Defence Forces have killed thousands of Palestinians, destroyed residential areas, and ordered the evacuation of at least 20 hospitals in northern Gaza. Israel is telling people who are already injured, sick, and dying in hospitals in Gaza to leave. 2/
Since I made my statement, Israel has bombed refugee camps, UN schools, hospitals, airports & the Rafah border crossing between Gaza & Egypt. The unspeakable destruction continues, & represents collective punishment against all Gazans in retaliation for attacks by Hamas. 3/
.
@HonAhmedHussen
Defunding UNRWA, especially after that ICJ ruling is immoral and embarrassing at best. May you & every other Canadian elected behind this decision be held accountable, in this life or the next, for the harms that will be further perpetuated by this. 1/
Canada unequivocally condemns the October 7th attack on Israel. I am deeply troubled by the allegations relating to some UNRWA employees. I have instructed Global Affairs Canada to pause all additional funding to UNRWA pending the outcome of the investigation. Read my statement:
I'm just going to say this once here since I keep hearing this and haven't said much.
@MaritStiles
and her team has not reached out around reconciliation or conversations about "keeping doors open". I don't know why that keeps coming up, including at provincial council today. 1/
For the people commenting on my hijab: I started wearing this on March 28th during Ramadan. I've always felt self conscious about what I look like; this helps reaffirm my faith while reminding me that what I look like is my own business. It's like my armour against public life 1/
While at a tear down at Beasley Park yesterday, peacefully taking photos, I was arrested & charged with assault of an officer for what happened at JC Beemer. But let me as you this: who in this picture holds power?
A full statement will be released soon. Follow
@HamOntESN
To be clear, I unequivocally condemn terrorism by Hamas on thousands of Israeli civilians. I also believe that Israel’s bombardment and siege on civilians in Gaza, as was also noted by the United Nations, is wrong. As a member of the Ontario NDP caucus,
@zahrasultani_
This is ridiculous. I'm a proud Muslim. I wore hijab as a teen, and started wearing it again during Ramadan alongside studying the Quran. During Ramadan I decided to wear it permanently. I have wanted to wear it again for so long. You don't get to tell me how to practice my faith

"Lashed out" at the PM? The unnecessary use of this picture? I Instead of focusing on my legislative work and announcements released today

Hamilton Centre MPP Sarah Jama lashed out at PM Justin Trudeau for declaring a pro-Palestinian rally outside a Toronto hospital to be antisemitic. The protest, which Jama says she attended, is under police investigation.

@MaritStiles
. We all must use every tool possible, everywhere we are, as electeds and as everyday people to challenge Anti-Palestinian racism.
The behaviour we saw in the legislature today towards an MPP is appaling. The Premier and this government are sending a strong message to Arab, Muslim, Palestinians in our province, that they are not welcome here at Queen’s Park.
The Ontario NDP will not stand for this.
@JustinTrudeau
has and will continue to have blood on his hands due to his failed leadership on this. He's once again proven what we already know to be true: the myth of Canada the peacekeeper, and the stories we tell ourselves of Canadian exceptionalism are lies.
#FreePalestine
“Our wholehearted support of the ICJ and its processes does not mean that we support the premise of the case brought forward by South Africa,” PM Trudeau says of genocide case against Israel. PM says ministerial statement on Canada’s position will be issued shortly.

Update: last Friday I finally had my vetting interview with the Ontario NDP. I'm now waiting for the party to give me the "green light". This essentially means I'm waiting to know if I'm officially allowed to run in the Hamilton Centre nomination race or not.
Another disabled person who would otherwise be alive died via MAiD this week, due to it being impossible to afford at home support

I can't believe it's been exactly a year since I was elected...
The year definitely didn't turn out how I thought it would, but I am extremely proud of all the great things my office has accomplished in my first year as Hamilton Centre's Member of Provincial Parliament. 1/
When I was told to remove my Keffiyeh at my desk in Feb I was told that this enforcement came from House Leader Calandara. He reminded people about using debates, not political symbols, as a means for expressing opinions. Please explain

This is so incredibly violent. My heart breaks for the people of Palestine. The government of Isreal needs to be held accountable for its actions. Anyone who still questions that this is an apartheid state isn't paying attention.
This is happening now in Jerusalem, Palestine. One of the holiest places in Islam is being savagely attacked by Israeli occupation forces. No sanctions. No ICC warrants.
#T4P
Join us tomorrow at 5:30 PM at the Israeli Zionist consulate for an Emergency action to defend Rafah, Gaza, & all Palestine from the Israeli Zionist genocidal operation. They’re targeting Rafah, home to 1.4 million, majority of whom were displaced from elsewhere in Gaza.
It's bad faith to conflate a response to a legal letter by my lawyers on the judicial review as "keeping the door open" re: my ejection from caucus. I agree we all have important work to do. I'm just asking for truth to be shared if I'm going to keep being brought up. 1/
.
@SarahJama_
, I understand .
@MaritStiles
reached out to you this past Wed re removing censure and caucus' position on that, along with staff advice on moving forward. Staff reached out to you. They still await your response. 1/
This change will lead to the deaths of sick and disabled people across Ontario. We need a government that governs with compassion and love, not contempt for people who don't have money to pay for healthcare. There is no reason for this much political violence.
Horrifying:
@fordnation
's Ministry of Health is ending renumeration for physicians who treat extremely vulnerable people who are uninsured, which includes undocumented and many unhoused people. This is telling physicians to treat people for free, or else don't treat them at all.
Y'all these people laugh with their full chest when we ask in Question Period why someone who is dying with cancer has to pay $6K for surgery that could save their life because the public healthcare system is being gutted. The cons are gleeful about the harms they are causing
Incredible.
The same NDP MPP who has called to abolish the police doesn't want more police officers in Ontario.
She doesn't want people to be safe on our streets.
She's content with the crime wave sweeping across the province.
This is the NDP.
To everyone mad in the comments:

This is alarming. The number of people who will be harassed, assaulted, and wrongfully killed by police will only increase. Remember when D'Andre was killed by a rookie cop when he called police routinely for help? Since when is less training the answer?!
NEW: Premier Doug Ford says the government will introduce new legislation that would “eliminate the post secondary education requirement to become a police officer” as the province tries to create a “pipeline” of police officers.
#onpoli
This is unsurprising. This officer beat an Indigenous man up and still gets to keep his six figure salary.
It's 2024 and we're still saying defund the police.
NEW: Brian Wren, the Hamilton police officer who assaulted an Indigenous man in a 'disturbing' act, will be demoted for one year before being reinstated:
#HamOnt
Today I voted against Ford's "Get it Done Act". This Act along with Bill 165 are nothing more than the latest attempts from Ford to enrich those who already have more than their fair share while ignoring the concerns of everyday Ontarians. 1/

If elected, I will bring the community-building approach I’ve learned from my years of grassroots advocacy to Queen’s Park, so that ideas for how to better Hamilton are rooted in community & serve our community. Here are some of my priorities for the first 100 days in office 1/
From gutting education system, healthcare system, uplifting greedy developers and landlords, to now cutting education and training requirements for police officers with guns, the conservatives are governing with the intention to harm.
Incredible.

This is the NDP.
No other publicly funded municipal service is able to demand annual budget increases of this size with an already ballooned budget and a reserve that doesn't get returned. $12 million could fund: housing, food, mental health support, transportation & more.
Disabled people have seen this coming for yesrs. From MAID being offered in place of parole in provincial jails, to now encouraging the public to report on their disabled neighbours, the Ford Government continues to criminalize disability.

Police should not have such an inflated budget that they then used to financially bully non profit organizations. Nothing

said was wrong or deserved a funding cut.
Policing isn't philanthropic. Take away their excess. Give it to organizations that need funding.

This just reads as a petty, reactive form of collective punishment against a people that are already starving without food, water, or shelter. I'm seriously trying to weigh in where useful, but as there are only a few of us Somalis elected in Canada, I could not hold my tongue 2/
