Hey, YOU! I’m not really writing about music much these days as I’ve been working as a film publicist and only really promoting my band Labrador on socials. I’m going to be deactivating this account soon. Go follow my other account
@Labrador_tunes
if you wanna stay in touch!
I've been reading AllMusic daily since 2006. I get a sense that it's a site that is either looked down on or completely overlooked by a lot of music journalists/music Twitter people. I'd say, dive in! I find so many records based on their recommendations!
To music journalists who still have staff gigs or established columns, it's your duty now more than ever to not recycle PR campaigns and to do some actual digging for underground music to the standard that Bandcamp Daily has set. No need to highlight groups that don't need help.
There's something so righteous about digital sales on Bandcamp. You could have bought a tape or an LP... or just streamed the thing for free anywhere ... but you paid for entry to have the music enter your little headphone universe. It's simple, but I really like that. Thanks.
Once Songtradr gets bored with Bandcamp, Neil Young should buy it and make it one of his final projects. Bandcamp Daily can give him a column where he can write about whatever, he'll fix the audio for downloads but make it a nightmare to navigate, win-win!
Ay labels/publicists! It’s a new year and I’m sufficiently excited to write about new music. Email and DMs are open. I’m going to be better about checking my PromoJukeBox account as well!

For
@NYDailyNews
I had the unbelievable privilege to speak with
@JohnCleese
about his involvement with
@CameoNation
.
It was such an unexpected thrill to hear such a recognizable voice from my life on the other end of the phone.
Contrary to whoever may tell you differently — whether it be your family, friends, more successful musicians you look up to, naysayers who talk shit, or that voice in your head— your art is real. Your band is real. Move forward.
Hey music publications, seems like a pretty big and credible story is brewing about someone y'all were anointing as a power pop genius. Seems like the DIY community should be made aware of it. Pretty quiet out there.
For
@bandcamp
, I spoke with
@JeffTweedy
about
@Wilco
's incredible run of records on their own label dBpm. We went through THE WHOLE LOVE through COUSIN and the importance of controlling how your art gets released. This was a big one for me.
Over at
@SPIN
, I had the chance to talk to
@davidbazan
about the incredible surprise new
@pedrothelion
album 'Havasu', out now on
@Polyvinyl
. David's music has guided me through some important times in my life and he remains one of the greats.
As logic stands, you couldn't meet a man crazy enough to rank all of the albums of
@theflaminglips
. But logic broke and he appeared and wrote this gigantic list over at
@PasteMagazine
!
The year is 2065.
@theneedledrop
submits a review of the new SOCK DRAW3R album, a 5th wave hyper pop band. This will be his final review before retirement. A crew pulls apart the white walls that surround him leaving him alone in a dark soundstage. "Tran..sition," he whispers.
Unbelievable.
@Labrador_tunes
is “New & Notable” according to
@Bandcamp
. Been writing songs for over 20 years and I’m truly overcome with gratitude. Thank you. Album is out next week. We’re just getting started.
.
@mountain_goats
will be releasing BLEED OUT tomorrow on
@mergerecords
. I spoke with John Darnielle about the badass action movies that inspired his writing over at
@PasteMagazine
. Check it out!
Today is the 50th anniversary of
@RandyNewman
's masterpiece 'Sail Away.' Check out my 4k word essay over at
@PasteMagazine
about how this album remains one of the most hilarious and uncomfortable takedowns of humanity.
I apologize if I've been annoying about the Labrador album. Promoting things is humiliating/mortifying, but I'm just trying to spread the word. It's been out a week and I can't believe how many people have listened to it so far. Thank you for checking it out! Tell a friend. 🚀
Some slightly big “news” in my world — I just started helping out at The Daily News this week for their Sunday Editions. Here is my first story interviewing
@rhettmiller
about his fantastic weekly
@Stageit
performances.
R.I.P. Mimi Parker. The music she and Alan created together in
@lowtheband
is some of the most important in my life. If you’ve never listened to them, do that today. It will change you. Unbelievably heartbroken. Thinking of Alan and their family.
My band Labrador has a new album out today called ‘Hold The Door For Strangers.’ We worked really hard on it and (I think) it’s very, very good. Take a listen wherever you do your streaming and grab a tape if you’d like.
I’ve felt more at home within the Philly music scene in the past two years than I ever did in the 12 years we lived in Brooklyn. This place is really special.
.
@PasteMagazine
was one of the first publications that made me want to be a music journalist, reading the physical copies in Borders books back in high school. I still can't believe I get to write for them all these years later. Happy anniversary!
.
@WildPinkNYC
is about to release one of the year's best albums with ILYSM. I spoke with John Ross about the importance of human connection and art when the real chance of it all being taken away presents itself to you. For
@PasteMagazine
:
I should clarify. BC Daily is still going strong for now. I’m just saying this as a wake up call for the big publications with writers on staff to realize the purpose of music journalism in the first place: to highlight music that deserves to be heard.
@hetherrfortune
Maybe more of a Daniel Lanois or Jim O’Rourke type, but I could see Blake Mills having that kind of stature. He’s produced interesting records for Haim, Bob Dylan, Alabama Shakes, Perfume Genius, and has an eclectic solo discography.
Gained some new followers since my MUSIC JOURNALISM rant. Not sure how involved I’ll be going forward. Been transitioning into film PR after being so disheartened/burned out from that world. Waiting on one BIG Bandcamp Daily story to publish, but going forward I only want to help
Last month, Greg Cartwright retired his long-running and beloved project
@ReigningSound1
. It was a thrill to sit down with the Memphis legend to talk about each of their fantastic records and give a final farewell to the band. For
@Bandcamp
:
I'm pretty sure I post this every Fall, but I feel like more people who are into goth stuff that skews toward rockabilly/country like The Smiths, Echo & The Bunnymen, or The Gun Club should get into this Chris Isaak album HEART SHAPED WORLD. You know the hit. Country for goths.
If Daniel Romano’s Outfit is playing in your town, you go see them. Damnit, you go see them. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, they should be the biggest band in the world.
For
@AltPress
, I told the story of one of rocks most fascinating and underrated songwriters,
@TheDanielRomano
. This story traces his early days, the formation of
@youvechangedrec
, his live wire band The Outfit, as well as their recent prog opus ‘La Luna’
ICYMI, I had a great conversation with
@EmmaRuthRundle
on the
@EarstoFeed
“In Conversation” podcast about her new album Engine of Hell, out on
@sargenthouse
. It’s available wherever you listen to yer pods!
Our 2021 season finale will be dropping tomorrow.
.
@lowtheband
is, at this point, one of America's great musical exports. Alan and Mimi never miss and their new album HEY WHAT shook me to my core. Check out my review over at
@EarstoFeed
and grab the new album from
@subpop

Last December, I spent two days in the magical town of Brattleboro, VT with the one and only
@KINGTUFFY

Real heads know. Graham Parker’s first run of records with The Rumour deserve all the flowers that Elvis Costello and Nick Lowe get. ‘Howling Wind’ and ‘Stick To Me’ are just as big in my eyes, but ‘Squeezing Out Sparks’ is the one. Great read as always,
@paranoiacs
"Taken together it’s some of the most swaggering, riveting, catchy, and complex rock‘n’roll music ever issued." Over at the Pitchfork Sunday Review I had the pleasure of revisiting Graham Parker's 1979 masterpiece 'Squeezing Out Sparks'. Check it out here!
It’s funny to me that the same people that called Wilco “Dad rock” for soo many years all freak out about the most boring sounding indie-folk records now.
I spoke with Scott Kannberg (
@spiralmusic
) of
@pavement_band
about the massive Terror Twilight: Farewell Horizontal reissue coming out tomorrow on
@matadorrecords
. He also told me about a brand new Spiral Stairs record on the way! For
@PasteMagazine

In other words, if you look at the list of singles you’ve highlighted in a new tracks weekly roundup or your list of past bylines and realize most of these singles/stories have been handed to you by big PR agencies, you should consider doing your best in balancing that scale.
In a year where power-pop (in the Big Star sense, not the Paul Collins sense) has made such a big splash, people should check out Mike Adams at His Honest Weight (
@micdadam
). His record from this year is full of unbeatable hooks and his back catalog is full of should-be hits.
It doesn't really make sense to complain about the biggest game in town, but p4k dropped the ball with the new Wild Pink. Such a clearly great and elevated work. Will be a standout album when people look back at this time.
Super excited to announce the brand new
@Labrador_tunes
album 'Hold The Door For Strangers'!
The album will be out early next year, but
@post_trash_
has an exclusive premiere of our first single "Guy With A Job (That Nobody Wants)"
For everyone listening to the new
@ChatPileBand
album today, check out my profile on the band over at
@PasteMagazine
! Can't think of another band who would namecheck Some Velvet Sidewalk and Lynne Ramsay's Ratcatcher in a single interview.
.
@archers_of
just released their first album in 24 years, the incredible 'Reason In Decline' on
@mergerecords
. For
@Bandcamp
, I caught up with
@Eric_Bachmann
to learn the history of the influential band and to see what brought them back into the studio.
I’ve been quiet this week, but this is exactly what I’ve been going through. I was let go from Metro as Features Editor of both NYC and BOS with a two sentence email and no severance. Glad my old colleagues are getting this story out.
Hey
@pitchfork
, this is me trying to grift some more coverage for my band
@Labrador_tunes
. Our album comes out next Friday and it rules.
@Bandcamp
agrees! We don't have a PR team assaulting your inbox. Any chance you could give us a mention somewhere? ❤️
I’m over the moon to say this, but the record I’ve made with my band Labrador is mixed, mastered, and we just got the album artwork in. We’ll be sharing some new music VERY soon but make sure to follow us here:
@Labrador_tunes

❤️💕❤️💕❤️
Last summer, we took my nephew to see his first movie in an actual theater. It was Pee Wee's Big Adventure. Possibly my favorite movie. It was amazing to see the magic hit for a five-year-old. What an undeniable and universal comedic character. Thank you and RIP, Paul Reubens.
Over at
@EarstoFeed
— I reviewed the new collab album between
@moormother
and billy woods (
@BackwoodzHipHop
) BRASS. It's easily one of the best hip hop projects I've heard in the last few years. All the checks, stars, and high-letter grades from me!
Now that we're on a lil' break, I just want to say I'm SOO proud of what we were able to accomplish at
@EarstoFeed
with the 'In Conversation' podcast. With 26 interviews, our DIY show had over 15k listeners this past year! Here's a thread of some of my favorites:
For
@PasteMagazine
I caught up with all three members of Cola, the new band that rose from the ashes of Ought (
@internetought
), about their decision to rip it up and start again. Their debut album comes out tomorrow on
@firetalkrecs
.
For my first story at
@aquadrunkard
, I interviewed
@juliedoiron
about her recent album 'I Thought of You', how the pressure to tend a garden and to make art differ, and so much more. Check it out now on
@youvechangedrec
! Thanks to
@jasonpwoodbury
for having me!
Julie Doiron :: The Aquarium Drunkard Interview
"I Thought Of You" marks Julie Doiron’s first official solo release in nine years. Throughout our conversation, Doiron explains what guides her collaborations and projects.
.
@waynecoyne
and I had a great chat today about
@theflaminglips
returning to the road, the “space bubble” concerts in OKC last January, and how being a dad changed it all around for him. Check it out at
@MetroPhilly
Stopped trying to write full time and found a job that I love, got more into weight training to balance with running, and released this album with my bruised alt-country band

My wife and I paid off our student loans and bought a house last week. Either one of those would be news worthy of freaking out over so I’m not sure how gentle or aggressive I should be walking.
Last week I spoke with Black Country, New Road (
@BCNRband
) about their groundbreaking new record 'Ants From Up There' and their bright future. Then this week, I spoke with them after everything changed. Here's my story for
@PasteMagazine
.
a few months ago i wrote about how der sturmer, a pro-nazi paper in 1930s and 40s germany, laid the groundwork for the holocaust by linking every crime to jewish people.
anyhow, here is the front page of rupert murdoch's ny post today.
.
@maxwellstern
and I tore up the Bryn Mawr 8.4 mile Loop this morning. Can we get a hell yeah?
Pretty proud of my time. Did the whole thing in 1hr and 1min.
On today’s ‘In Coversation’ pod I spoke with Sara Lund of
@therealunwound
about the 20th anniversary of ‘Leaves Turn Inside You.’ Check it out at
@EarstoFeed
or Spotify. I mean, come on. It’s Sara Lund of UNWOUND!!!
Here’s my David Berman story. When I was features editor at Metro NY/Boston, I hired my friend James Case to interview DCB about the new project he had coming out called Purple Mountains. James and I were huge fans and were so excited that Drag City and David were down 🧵
Sometimes I forget just how great the disconnect is between people who work in music media who don’t play or book shows and those who work in the industry and regularly do that stuff. Neither side is “lesser” than the other, but understanding that perspective is key.
