Friends, it’s hard to put the universe into language and into a short message, but
She passed away last night, surrounded by family and love, including yours. Keep her name close and sacred. Share this moment with someone who needs you. Love is indeed the most important thing.
When you hear of someone falling off or becoming homeless or a hoarder after someone close to them dies, it’s not the grief that put them there - it’s the mountain of cold bullshit they have to cut through just to function and go on with life. The crowning gift of capitalism.
Friends. Your love is perfect and overwhelming. Spread it. Thank you.
Funeral will be this Thursday likely at 1 pm at the LDS church in Duluth. All are welcome and we indeed invite you.
Peace and love. Equal rights and justice, too, but peace and love through and through.
Happy birthday Robert Smith, author of the greatest first verse in pop.
“Show me show me show me how you do that trick, the one that makes me scream, she said, the one that makes me laugh she said, and threw her arms around my head. Show me how you do it, and I promise you,…”
WEAR A MASK AT SHOWS!
-yes, there are exceptions
-bands can’t afford to get sick and cancel shows
-if you really love music, this should not be difficult
-many people just can’t go to shows until this really goes away
-please, no demands or arguments, just please. 🙌🏻
I wish I could explain the strange scattered-ness and social confusion that has set in since Mim died. I know people understand, but I’m embarrassed at how inconsistent I’ve become.
Good morning. Beautiful blustery day, here. It’s going around, y’all, so we suggest that you mask if you can today at the funeral. Not going to get weird about it - just want you to be safe - even a little careful sometimes is all it takes. ❤️🥁❤️
I know they gotta keep things secure and all, but sorting out paperwork, bills, and financial details after a spouse’s death is a nightmare. I highly suggest simplifying your world and preparing for the inevitable unexpected. Have a lovely weekend.
In honor of Mim and it being a year, this weekend, since her death, I say
STOP THE MURDERING AND WAR.
After growing up on a farm and knowing death, and then watching someone close pass away, it is UNFATHOMABLE, trying to comprehend why anyone would cause such suffering.
Saw The Cure last night. Always a dear band to me so it was great to finally see, hear, and feel the love they give, in person. Loved watching the sometimes subtle personalities on stage become familiar friends as the show would unfold. Safe travels to all out there bringing it.
Thank you, friends. If this doesn’t work, it’s safe to say we’ll know where
@umg
stands. The system will crumble - they have a chance here to adjust and be useful to the future or fade to dust, clinging to their pieces of silver.
Love you all. Peace on earth.
❤️🥁❤️
Here’s something I found today that Mim wrote down not long ago. Maybe it’s notes from something she heard or read, but it’s the way she saw things, for sure.
Tag the giant media company that owns your ancient back catalog in a tweet, then put up a screenshot of the tweet. Traffic is totally different.
Good luck, y’all. ❤️🥁❤️
If you want to help the music scene come back strong, order records in advance (helps the label predict how much to manufacture and to defer long costs) and buy tickets to shows early (helps promoters/venues predict sales, giving them resources and confidence to book MORE.) 🥁🙌
@UMG
won’t give the rights back. We’ve asked. Original advance was tiny, did 3 1/2 records with them that they won’t give back to us after 25+ years now. They keep licensing to crappy reissue companies and we see nothing. Meanwhile, we can’t tour anymore and tour was all our $.
Ritual and commemoration feel a bit strange, but I did kinda walk into a Día de los Muertos celebration yesterday and allowed it to wash over me. I was surprisingly comforted by friends and strangers and an altar with photos of passed loved ones. I made a paper flower. ❤️🥁❤️
Due to health reasons affecting their tour,
@lowtheband
will not perform at Primavera Sound Los Angeles 2022. We are sorry for any inconvencience this may cause. We send all our support to the band and hope to see them in future editions of the festival.
Hilarious! We’ve had that done to us, noticed it, said nothing because why argue with someone who would think so little of you, and then we moved on to work with someone else instead. “That sounds great” is sometimes what you say when you’ve realized the engineer is not helping.
As a recording studio engineer, I've lost count how many times bands/producers have asked for more of whatever on their track. I just turn a knob that does absolutely nothing until they say "that sounds perfect". Twats.
Not looking for a discussion, but I was just realizing that Husker Du really primed the pump for what would eventually be called shoegaze - at least for me. Candy Apple Grey LP especially, Bob’s wall of guitar, Grant’s shuffling texture, Greg’s melodic thickness, dreamy pop…
Feeling for Jimmy Carter right now. It’s just the weirdest shock to lose a person that is so close and beyond real to you - even more than you can imagine. It shatters foundations you didn’t even realize were there.
Peace to all who have lost loved ones recently. ❤️🥁❤️
This is a photo of the new Low record vinyl master being cut at Chicago Mastering. This is exciting but still very early in the process. Copies will not be in stores until September - It’s just the way the biz is. Official announcement and details coming soon. 🙌
The idea of OWNERSHIP will eventually collapse. It already has, in many ways. Artists and art lovers have to be brave and find a new economy or the “owners” will just continue to hide while sucking away all resources and avenues. OWNERSHIP is not sustainable, imho.
One of our last recordings. Recorded it at home. Cyrus plays bass. Mim sounds like and sings from exactly where she was at the time. Beautiful. Still.
❤️🥁❤️
By far, the most convoluted, bureaucratic, dragging entity I’ve had to deal with, sorting out things after Mim died, has been
@bmi
. It’s almost like they want you to give up. Meanwhile, the money sits in their bank.
I (Alan) will be playing guitar in a Ween tribute band playing at
@CedarLoungeBeer
in Superior Thursday (7sharp) and at
@TheHookMpls
on Friday this week. Mim would play their Quebec CD in the kitchen a lot. ❤️🥁❤️
❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️
Thank you, everyone, for the kind words and chatter about the record. Trying to catch up on likes and “thank you”s but for now know that we are grateful and your kindness is definitely felt and makes the universe a little brighter. Find someone else who could use some love, too.
The morning after Kurt cobain died, driving home from a show in Louisiana, we rolled into MN, DJ announced his passing then played Words. First time we heard ourselves on radio.
Maybe I’m seeing patterns that aren’t really there, but there sure are a lot of those singers from the 90s who were singing that really heavy shit that are almost all gone now, many tragically. Peace and condolences to Mark’s family and friends.
Thank you Jeffrey. Your story of tragedy, recovery, and a triumphant heart through it all was a real anchor and inspiration through these last few months. I’m so glad you saw/hear her and I’m so glad you are still here showing us all how to live and love.
‘Been playing guitar in friends’ bands (Damien, Tired Eyes), playing and recording funk with Cyrus in DERECHO Rhythm Section, & I did a show last week as myself with Cyrus and Shahzad. More shows in Spain and Portugal in Nov.
Low is and was Mimi. It was amazing. I’m grateful.❤️
I wish you were here right now, hearing the 4 teenagers in our basement figuring out how to play music together. Perhaps the most beautiful thing I’ve heard in a long time. It’s all down hill from here.
Guys, its time to take a hard look at ourselves. If you have been putting off therapy, go. If you are drinking alcohol, cut back. Take a walk, maybe go to anger management therapy. Encourage your friends to do the same. Don't wait until it's too late and too close to home.
If feels so good to be in Spain. My heart expands here with every face I see and sun on the sea as we drive south feels like pure love. Thank you, friends in Barcelona - forever grateful to know you. Early gig in Benidorm today. Light it up.
A joy to see and hear you lift the room!! Pleasure to meet and touch that amazing sweater! Thank you for everything y’all put into the universe. Safe travels and enjoy some sun.
Road crew, venue crew, booking agents and labels, promoters and managers - all taking the hit still. Artists still write, practice, record, prepare, livestream, etc., but the rest have had nothing. Give someone a call, lift their day, thank them for all they’ve done, give hope.
Ha! Still here but now you can’t tell if it’s me. It’s been great and I love you all. There are other ways to find us, and the music will always be there for you. ❤️🥁❤️
Well, we received a positive test result for someone in our household. We thought it may be coming so we had/have taken measures to quarantine. Waiting on further testing to see if it spread to one more of us. This shit is wild and mega-contagious, folks. Do yr best. Wear a mask.
Collab with Bjork, first band to go to Mars (October), our mime EP, tour backing up Michael Buble, soundtrack for Sharknado 8, Steve’s solo bass record called “Back to Bass-ics”, Mimi running for president (official announcement in February) and Alan has started a cult.
Fear of Death got me through some hard shit these last couple years. Seriously. It’s magic and medicine. Thank you for writing it and sharing it. Safe travels.
We would like to thank Steven Deusner and
@uncutmagazine
for this kind and beautiful tribute to Mimi. She would have been quietly pleased with the photo by Pieter M Van Hattem , too.
❤️🥁❤️
Sorry, but it’s review retweet season. You’ll see maybe too much of that photo of us standing in the yard looking like creepy farmers, but it will be over soon and your mind will clear. We are excited but understand the potential redundancy. HEY WHAT is out in 2 days. 🙌💜🙌
Someone showed me this card the other day and it kinda blew my mind but now this cover makes the photo even more surreal - Kinda looks like those two. Would be a rad card to have in your commander deck. Hello to all at FILTER ❤️.
They don’t need to win - they can’t - so their only hope is that you will give up. They know they will never get their way so they just seek to ruin it for the rest. Stay true, y’all.
Ah, things getting retweeted from our account.
Safe to say, it’s not me, y’all. Welcome to the slow fade. Know that we love you and we are eternally grateful to you all. It would be nice if this channel stayed open and reliable, but it would be folly to assume it will.
❤️🥁❤️
Dude is verbally attacking an environmentalist teenage girl with Asperger’s because she got the TIME cover and he didn’t. Gonna be hard to forget this kind of stuff or the people who enabled it.
This was a thrill. Thank you YLT for bringing your love and strength to Minnesota and for letting me join you in your sacred, vast, and open field. “They’re really nice people” was always a touring band inside joke, but it’s true and then some. Safe travels to all. ❤️🥁❤️
Every time I see “AI” in a sentence, I have a little double-take because it looks like “Al” and I think people are talking about how I’m going to drive your car, write terrible songs, and ruin everything.
Thank you. Love to all and peace on earth. This song was always for those who are especially missing loved ones this time of year. So grateful for you all and we hope the new year brings joy and healing and strength and justice.
❤️🥁❤️
Finally sat down and learned this on the guitar and started crying the moment those words so clumsily but softly flew out of my mouth. Played it for my beautiful wife an hour later and for a moment we could feel the whole universe. Thank you from the deepest of our hearts.
Yo La Tengo are the MASTERS of the stage. Such effortless and deep vibe, and of course the nicest people in the biz. Thank you Georgia, Ira, James, and Fred!
@TheRealYLT
We were the secret opener last night!
Folks, we have never been able to maintain the exponential level of social-media/internet presence that is expected from artists. I know that’s totally fine with most of you, but it’s been interesting facing that gulf again as we gear up for a new release. We will do our best. 💜
We have received so much love and kindness from fans, friends, and fellow artists - most are too precious and private to broadcast, but some are and should be shared and shouted from the rooftops. Thank you DCFC and thank you all for being here.
❤️🥁❤️
So, Mimi the drummer invented a drum mute years ago. It’s called a “Snare Snake.” It’s a long velour bean bag that lays along the edge of your drum. Anyone interested? If so, she made more and we will put them up for sale.
Thank you all so much! Thank you Tim. This is the kind of stuff that keeps the world turning, so thank you for inviting us and love to you all. Thank you for listening and for your love all these years.

FRIENDS. We were hoping things would sort out by now but due to some family health issues that have come up and made our schedule unpredictable, we won’t be able to do the weekly IG live shows for the next while. We’ll check in a bit, but thank you for the love and good vibes. 🙌
This. Just. Cuts. Through. Watch it.
Later in the series when Robbie Shakespeare shows you how reggae bass is BACKWARDS funk (you end on the root instead of start on the root) just blows the doors wide open. Music is so generous and Bootsy is the king.
Happy birthday to Bootsy Collins, born on this day in 1951 in Cincinnati, Ohio. Here he is sharing his formula for funk in the BBC series “Rockschool” from the 1980s.
Hey-O! We got it! COVID positive tests coming up in both bands. Shit.
We have to cancel Davenport tonight and Madison tomorrow.
Honestly, surprised the tour lasted this long.
Thank you for masking, y’all.
Wear a mask at shows!!! Please!
Back out in two weeks. 💜💜💜
Kranky is awesome and pays us a very fair percentage of sales and they keep costs to a minimum. They get good pressings and are smart about keeping stock up but not flooding the market. It’s the first few records on Vernon Yard that are in UMG black hole.
Local college radio here is pretty great. Student DJs are so wide open and random and they know and love the music. Pretty inspiring. Just heard Louis Armstrong then Nina Simone, into Scorpions. Heard Silver Apples the other day and had to stop and catch my breath and smile.
I know at least two young very talented artists who have set music to the side because they see the negativity that gets heaped upon artists with certain personal characteristics and just don’t want that in their life. Solidarity with Billy Nomates. Truly pearls before swine.
Boss guitar synth pedal into a gated distortion. The synth setting has an envelope on the filter so every slightly different hit goes crazy with the gate. Took a minute to figure out how to make it land where I wanted it, but it was a good day when we found that sound. Thanks!
