Things you miss about UKS2 teaching
Multiplying fractions by integers can be a tricky concept to understand but this really helped children understand the structure to these types of questions.
I am firm believer that resources are for all children 🧮
🤔 Move aside double page spread 🤔
The kids absolutely loved summarising their spring term learning with these flap style designs. They also followed their own line of enquire to research more information. 💻📚
Thankyou to whoever did this recently for the inspiration 🙌🏻
Converting improper fractions to mixed number fractions.
Here is a video of how we show all children how to manipulate the tiles and pegs when converting.
Invest time in the concrete phase. Resources for all ❤️
🎯 Can’t beat a bit of bully 🎯
Reflecting on this year, the summariser bullseye has moved mountains with scaffolding talk in my classroom.
Such a simple structure that can be replicated across the curriculum.
Cant recommend enough if you haven’t used before!
🧠 Retrieval Practice 🧠
Did they actually retain anything?
A quick and easy way to gauge the learning and understanding from lockdown 🔒
No teaching required 🙌🏻

🚨 KS2 Numicon 🚨
A quick staff CPD on how to use the tiles for finding factors, factor pairs and prime numbers
• Build the factor Sandwiches
• Write the factors and the pairs
• If it has one pair it is Prime
Give it a try 👍🏻
Note: a lot of ones were used!
“It does not do to dwell on dreams and forget to live!” Albus Dumbledore... introducing Harry James Ellis... when can the Numicon come out? 😊
@HJAMrsEllis
Numicon in Year 6?? But it’s only for KS1 🤔
We spent 15 mins learning through play where ch had to add - and + numbers
How to play:
See pic 4
Takeaway: It is important for resources to be familiar with ch as many wanted to build with the tiles (15 mins booked in next week)
Converting mixed number fractions into improper fractions.
Another area of fractions which children can struggle to grasp a solid understanding.
Here is a video of how we show children how to manipulate the tiles and pegs when converting.
Resources for all ❤️
❤️ fraction planning ❤️
I really enjoy planning backwards and having conversations to generate ideas!!
A shout out to
@WhiteRoseMaths
@mrbartonmaths
and
@OUPPrimary
for generating questions and images for our lessons!
Now just the job of turning it into lessons 🧮
🧮 Balancing Numicon 🧮
I always find children have so misconceptions around what the equals sign actually means SO today we investigated just that.
Resources:
• Scales (Balance Pans)
• Numicon
Numicon proving yet again, that it isn’t just a KS1 resource ❤️
These small differences make a 🌍 of difference in deepening the children’s understanding!
Thanks
@mrbartonmaths
and
@gareth_metcalfe
for reducing the workload and creating awesome questions, which challenge the thinking of all the children.
Practical learning in UKS2 😲
Here are a few ideas of how to use Numicon tiles across a sequence of learning.
I’ve found that using familiar resources consistently can help to reduce cognitive overload load so pupils focus on the maths and not play ❤️
Finding fractions of amount.
This is how we manipulate the tiles so that all children practise and embed learning.
It’s not for all, but it helps support our children with another tricky area of maths.
Resource led ❤️
Love it when a resource lends itself perfectly to a lesson.
Show 2 examples of a given area.
• Make it ✋🏼
• Draw it ✏️
• Check by counting ✔️
One of my favourite areas of maths to teach 😆
Fractions to Decimals
3/10 to £0.30p to 0.3
Lots of ‘Oh yeah!’ moments when discussing the converting between fractions and decimals.
The money link helped lots!

Walked in this morning to find the classroom trashed!!!
Don’t worry, Year 3 are on the case and we think we know who the suspect is!
The value in choosing a quality text❤️ non fiction writing coming soon ✍️
One of my favourite areas to teach using Numicon tiles.
This is how we introduce and move learning on in a perimeter lesson.
Let all children explore all shapes.
An impossible challenge to check for misconceptions: can you find an odd perimeter?
🧮 KS2 Numicon 🧮
A 15 minute CPD session after school looking at perimeter and area and how we can use resources.
• Same coloured pegs to show perimeter.
• Different coloured pegs to show the area.
• Replace the pegs for dashes for rectilinear shapes
Give it a try 👍🏻
❤️ Loved this perimeter problem solving lesson using Numicon ❤️
Task:
- Draw as many 4 sided shapes as possible.
- It has to have a perimeter of 18.
- How many shapes can you make?
We then explored the same with a given perimeter of 24... can anyone spot the square? 🤔
🤷🏻♂️ Ten tenths = one one 🤷🏻♂️
Get to the point with adding decimals
Using the tiles and pegs allows children to see the value of ten and when its ‘full’ we need to move to the next column.
A tricky concept smashed with Numicon 🧮
🚨 Numicon to Bookwork 🚨
We moved learning on as we made rectilinear shapes, worked out the perimeter and then drew them in our books!
Challenge idea 💡from
@kellis_Lect
we could have spent all afternoon on it 🧮🧮
Transition day ✅
Off to Year 6 next for me 😊 So we decided to give the children a taste of what’s to come with our WW2 Roman Numeral inspired lesson.
The children loved trying to workout the codes on the secret file 🔎
🎲 Spelling game 🎲
The Year 4 children loved this game today when practising spellings! Thanks for the games

Today we started Subtraction and it’s safe to say children are definitely becoming more confident! ‘This is easy!’ ‘Maths is fun!’ This weeks learning will show yet again that Numicon is for all abilities not just those ‘who need it!’

Position and direction update 3
Describing translation on a grid was made easier by using tiles and peg boards today
It’s a great way to spot misconceptions and understanding of what translation means (last picture)
Consistency with resources = more time on the learning ♥️
🧮 A Numicon recall game 🧮
We started the fractions unit by looking at unit and non unit fractions
The game -
Shout out ‘unit fraction’ - they show a UF - Ask for the fraction name. Repeat with non unit fractions.
It’s an easy way to check understanding and pronunciation.
🌃🦅 turning the lights out on The Lost Words 🦅🌃
🖤 Blackout Poetry 🖤
Children used this technique to select language which caught their interest. It’s an enjoyable way to help children overcome that ‘writers block’ 💡

This series has helped me strip planning back. Slides 1 and 2 are teacher led - ‘I do’ and follow steps 1-3. Slides 3 and 4 are the ‘we do’ phase. Hinge questions support our ‘check’ before the ‘you do’

🦉 what a fantastic day Year 4 have had investing and dissecting Owl pellets! It has certainly been one of the best science days I’ve been apart of in my 7 years of teaching! All children were absolutely engrossed from start to finish 🦉

❤️ Wow moment (again) ❤️
Children created these awesome pieces of art to retell the birth of Jesus in our RE lesson this week.
What an amazing outcome! Thankyou

🚨 Step into coding 🚨
Is there a better or easier way to get kids active than designing and programming their own pedometers?
The classroom was alive with excitement as we watched our steps go up! I highly recommend for a great coding project

Converting and Ordering fractions… no problem!
We looked at how Numicon and the online version could support the teaching and learning in our classroom tonight when converting and ordering fractions with different denominators.

Autumn term ✅
Here is our journey of learning through the Autumn term. It’s great to look back at and talk with the Year 4 children about what they have done without opening a book 📚
So easy and great for initiating conversations about learning.
🧮 Finding the missing fraction 🧮
Recap - making the whole.
Q. 4/7 + ____ = 7/7

🐺 The big bad wolf 🐺
We retrieved our knowledge of tones using water colours and applied it to our wolf paintings. These awesome character descriptions now look great.
Can’t wait for the children to read and show them to FS children!

@Teacherglitter
for the idea!
✍️ Loved using the zone of relevance today in English! ✍️
The children had previously built up a bank of words and phrases and they then made their own decisions on the the language they liked the best. This will now be used to write a characterisation piece! ❄️ 👑
