The UN General asked me to provide a way to respond to and recover from the crisis. Here’s what I came up with in my latest report--
Report:
Summary:
1/6
My remarks a few weeks ago to the
@UN_HRC
on Gaza. The international community has done nothing to prevent Israel's campaign on genocide and starvation. The world's governments are complicit. It is time to sanction Israel to ensure an immediate ceasefire.
The day after
@ICJ
concluded that Israel is plausibly committing Genocide in Gaza, some states decided to defund UNRWA for the alleged actions of a small number of employees. This collectively punishes +2.2 million Palestinians. Famine was imminent. Famine is now inevitable.
.
@UNRWA
lifesaving programmes are in serious jeopardy following countries decisions to halt their funding to the agency, Commissioner General
@UNLazzarini
said on Saturday, urging them to reverse their decisions
We call for the the
@GazaFFlotilla
to be allowed safe passage to Gaza. The Isr. blockade and occupation is wrong and illegal. Moreover, countries should not hold up the Freedom Flotilla and support in any way that they can.
#Israel
/
#Gaza
: UN experts demand safe passage for the Freedom Flotilla Coalition, whose ships departing
#T
ürkiye will be carrying 5500 tonnes of humanitarian aid & hundreds of international humanitarian observers to the besieged Gaza Strip.
Israel has been intentionally starving the Palestinian people in Gaza since October 8. Now famine may very well be already occurring. The only way to end/prevent this famine is an immediate ceasefire. And the only way to get a ceasefire is to sanction Israel.
Israel has denied humanitarian aid into northern Gaza since January 23. The moment that aid was allowed to enter, Israeli forces reportedly open fire killing over 100 people and wounding over 700. Israel's systemic denial/restriction of humanitarian aid must stop. CEASEFIRE NOW!
While famine starts killing children after 4.5 months of assault on Gaza,desperate Palestinians gather to collect food aid to stay alive. Israeli forces reportedly open fire on them,killing 70 & wounding hundreds.This nightmare must end now!
via
@AJEnglish
We call upon Israel to end it starvation campaign against the Palestinian people in Gaza. The international community should enact an arms embargo and also sanction Israel to ensure it complies with international law. There needs to be an earnest push for a permanent ceasefire.
#GazaFamine
: UN experts condemn ‘flour massacre’ and urge
#Israel
to end campaign of starvation & targeting of civilians in
#Gaza
.
They reiterate the earlier call by
@UN_SPExperts
for an arms embargo and sanctions on Israel.
It's unprecedented to make an entire civilian population go hungry this completely & quickly. Israel is destroying Gaza’s food system. Israel is intentionally imposing a high rate of disease, prolonged malnutrition, dehydration + starvation by destroying civilian infrastructure
UN experts warn Gazans now constitute 80% of those facing famine worldwide, amid ongoing Israeli bombardment & siege.
“
#Israel
is destroying & blocking access to farmlands and the sea & using food as a weapon against the
#Palestinian

The UN General Assembly asked me to report on the food crisis and pandemic. Here is what I came up with:
My new report details structural challenges and provides ways forward.

UN experts denounce strikes on hospitals & schools in
#Gaza
: "Israeli military action in Gaza & mounting violence in
#WestBank

#GazaUnderSiege
is a violation of international law & is also unspeakably cruel."
As of May 1, I will be the new Special Rapporteur on the Right to Food. This pandemic has highlighted what many of us already knew: we all depend on each other for food, housing + well-being; hunger is always the result of political failure not lack of supply
@UN_SPExperts
URGENT Job Alert 🚨: I need a researcher ASAP for my next report on violence in food systems. I need someone who can provide doctrinal and critical take on IHL/ICL. Pls spread the word. It’s about two months worth of work. Don't contact me directly. See details below

1) how corporate power is at the root cause of failing food systems;
2) how trade policy can be changed to meet agroecological needs
UK High Court of Justice holds that London-based company that delivered the explosive ammonium nitrate to Beirut’s port is liable towards the victims of August 2020 blast. Many questions remain unanswered, but this is a significant victory for the victims.
From mid-Jan. to end-Feb., the UN has recorded at least 14 incidents involving shooting and shelling of people gathered to receive desperately needed supplies. The Flour Massacre is horrible b/c it is the worst attack by Isr. against Palestinian civilians in a series of attacks
This is a reminder that defunding UNRWA punishes *all* Palestine refugees in Lebanon, Syria, Jordan, and Occupied West Bank and East Jerusalem - not just Gaza.
Approximately 2.5 - 3 million people's lives put at stake.
This targets and harms the Palestinian people as such.
Director of UNRWA in Lebanon, Dorothee Klaus, said the agency has the ability to provide services to Palestinians in Lebanon until the end of March, after the suspension of aid by 19 donors. Klaus added failure to resume funding will affect all Palestinians in

Israel's war in Gaza is starving over 1 million Palestinians.
Death from hunger and starvation is hard to measure during war. That means that official tolls of how many Palestinians that Israel has killed in Gaza is probably an underestimate.

Systems don't just "collapse". Starvation is a war crime. It's caused by military & political action of a government and its allies. Israel and its allies are responsible for exposing 2.2 million Palestinians in Gaza to starvation.

Many people put a lot of effort into the preparation of the upcoming UN Food Systems Summit. Unfortunately, many people are coming out of the process frustrated. They are worried about corporate capture of the UN and our food systems.
Our alarm for unfolding genocide doesn't only refer to the ongoing bombardment of Gaza...also concerns the slow suffering + death caused by Israel’s long-standing occupation, blockade & current civic destruct'n...genocide advances thru an ongoing process & isn't a singular event

Thoughts re: UN Sec-Gen's office response to criticism -
1. There's a comfort w/ superficial participation
2. Saying that the UN needs to engage w/ "private sector" avoids the problem of corporate power.
Food producers and workers are the pvt sector!
Keep the statements of solidarity with the Palestinian people coming b/c they matter. Other action also matters and everything counts: listening to Palestinian people, writing a letter to your local politician, marching in the street, work stoppage, etc
CALL FOR INPUT: Violence and the Right to Food
My next report to the Human Rights Council focuses on the nature, degree, and cause of violence present in food systems.

Effective programs are things like:
1. Direct cash transfers;
2. Universal school meals;
3. Support territorial markets;
4. Support small food producers;
5. Protection of workers' rights
6. Social protection
7. Support local gov't
How about long-term changes?

Almost 80 countries and scores of NGOs spoke during this discussion of my report . The vast majority of countries took on the notion that violence is systemic across all food systems. Let's hope the right to food resolution captures this growing consensus.

Everyone is focused on the food crisis. This reports by the Civil Society and Indigenous Peoples Mechansim captures people's perspectives from all over the world. Unlike many int'l reports and national plans, it highlights the structural challenges and provides a way forward. 👇
New report➡️"Voices from the ground 2: transformative solutions to the global systemic food crises" underlines the inadequacy of government & multilateral responses that have resulted in increased inequalities & heightened fragility of food systems.

Germany has decided to intervene as a third party in the ICJ Genocide Case of South Africa v Israel. That means they will put forward substantive arguments for the main hearing. SR Health's response rightfully reminds Germany of its own genocidal history.
The state that committed more than one genocide throughout its history is trying to undermine the efforts of a country that is a victim of colonialism and apartheid, to protect another genocide and an occupying nuclear power. Germany? Are you for real? We hope you can do better!!
“When a stockpile of ammonium nitrate exploded in the Port of Beirut in August 2020, creating one of the largest non-nuclear blasts...the world did nothing to find out why this happened.”
I argue that the
@UN_HRC
should mandate an int'l investigation
The Food System Summit has dedicated an Action Track to "Nature Positive Production" - but very few people within the Summit know what this means. I've read some reports around this term, and I think it remains a vague idea that distracts from agroecology.
Many people put a lot of effort into the preparation of the upcoming UN Food Systems Summit. Unfortunately, many people are coming out of the process frustrated. They are worried about corporate capture of the UN and our food systems.

Use existing budgets to transition to agroecology.
To help overcome structural constraints and trigger food system transformation would need things like:
1. A just transition for workers;
2. Strong land rights + redistribution of land;
3. Curtailment of corporate power

This is why simply calling for shorter supply chains misses the point. The underlying problem remains that one corporation has so much power in a supply chain that it dictates how land is used.
