Just been clocking up my cycling miles & I’ve managed to do nearly 75 miles in one week including two round trips from Mitcham to Camden. Along with the massive health benefits of exercise, it certainly makes you recognise the road safety issues you sometimes face as a cyclist.
As cabinet member, I was appalled to see serious breaches of planning rules which has resulted in a number of trees being felled without our authorisation at the Ford Garage on Plough Lane. Following many representations,
@Merton_Council
planning enforcement have followed up.1/4
Proud to announce that I've been shortlisted to be Labour’s candidate for the Croydon and Sutton seat. Looking forward to setting out my priorities and why I want to represent the area I grew up in on the London Assembly.
@jamesgoldstone
@lara_eleanor
And democratically selected unlike Keir Morrison who was imposed by the Labour NEC having lost the selection to Sally Gimson and then went on to have the worst performance of any candidate in a Labour held seat.
Delighted to announce that I will be standing as a
@LondonLabour
list candidate for the London Assembly election on May 2. Look forward to working with a great Labour team across London to get
@SadiqKhan
re-elected as mayor and electing
@CityHallLabour
members.
Today I am announcing that I will be seeking the Labour nomination for the Croydon and Sutton London Assembly selection. This is an area where I have deep roots having grown up in Addiscombe and Carshalton, along with where I first joined the Labour Party in 1994. 1/5
Environmental damage like this will not be tolerated by
@Merton_Council
. Our message to any local business or resident who is considering a breach of planning rules is that they will find there is a very high price to pay. 4/4
Absolutely delighted to have been elected today to
@LondonLabour
regional executive committee along with
@lisahoman
to represent constituencies in Merton, Wandsworth, Westminster, Kensington & Chelsea and Hammersmith & Fulham. Thanks to everyone for their support.
#LonLab21
Saddened about what has happened to
@joanryanEnfield
in Enfield North tonight as I know she’s an incredibly hard-working MP and have been proud to campaign for her in elections. Some of the abuse against her is truly revolting and has no place in the Labour Party.
Delighted to announce that planning permission has formally been granted by
@Merton_Council
for the new
@AFCWimbledon
stadium. Very good news for all fans of the club and that the Dons are finally coming home.
So pleased the work of
@Siobhain_Mc
has been recognised in the
#NewYearsHonours
especially her campaigning work on brain cancer and Glioblastoma, but also her public service over the past 41 years both on Merton Council and the
@UKLabour
MP for Mitcham & Morden since 1997.
Very pleased to announce that
@Merton_Council
has today received £85,000 from
@TfL
to fund 18 school streets across the borough - looking forward to getting them implemented from September. Also got £18,000 for footway widening on the Fair Green in Mitcham.
Very pleased to announce that
@Merton_Council
has today received funding of £112.030 for a further 7 school streets to make it 29 in total and funding for low traffic neighbourhoods from
@TfL
.
Congratulations to the superb
@LeonieC
on her reselection as the Labour London Assembly candidate for Merton and Wandsworth. Now we need to get back out on the
#LabourDoorstep
to get Leonie &
@SadiqKhan
re-elected next May and keep London Labour.
Very good news that
@TfL
are converting the 200 bus which runs from Mitcham to Raynes Park to double deck electric buses from 20 February 2021. Will be the first electric double decker route in Merton and hopefully the first of many. Also welcome the additional capacity provided.
So it’s goodbye to
#BBCThisWeek
- great political programme even if at times some of the guests can be infuriating but
@afneil
has been a superb presenter.
Congratulations to
@AFCWimbledon
club legend and president Dickie Guy was tonight made a Honorary Freeman of
@Merton_Council
- highly deserved for all his work for the club over many decades.
Really enjoyed spending the evening helping the superb
@MelanieFelt
get elected as
@CroydonLabour
councillor for Park Hill and Whitgift on May 2. Met a lifetime Tory switching to Labour for the first time. Also many voting for
@SadiqKhan
as mayor and
@MinsuR
as assembly member.
Congratulations to my colleague
@eleanormerton1
on her selection as
@UKLabour
candidate for Wimbledon - looking forward to getting out on the
#LabourDoorstep
to get you elected. We did in 1997 and 2001, and we can do so again.
Great to be joined by
@SadiqKhan
in Wimbledon tonight and emphasising the need to vote Labour on Thursday and re-elect
@MertonLabour
. Also enjoyed campaigning with my nephew Max Whelton who’s the youngest Labour candidate in London at 18 and standing in Sutton.
Great news that
@Merton_Council
will be putting in place 28 school streets from September. Encouraging children to walk and cycle to school each day and reducing emissions from cars. Full list of schools in the article.
Can announce that
@Merton_Council
plans to roll out 16 cycle hangers over the next year - consultation on the first six will shortly get underway with further locations to follow.
Enjoyed seeing the new
@GalliardHomes
development of over 600 flats with
@cllrallison
next to
@AFCWimbledon
‘s new ground today which includes the
@catalysthousing
development. Great to see it nearing completion on what is one of the largest housing developments sites in London.
Great to spend the day helping get
@MarcelaBenede10
elected in South West and
@JSmallEdwards
elected in West Central along with
@SadiqKhan
re-elected for a 3rd term. Good to also see many of my
@LondonLabour
list colleagues working for Labour success on May 2 at City Hall.
Great to spend the evening campaigning alongside
@SadiqKhan
@JSmallEdwards
,
@borakwon
&
@LondonLabour
list colleagues on Old Oak estate.
Many people using all 3 votes for Labour next Thursday recognising our record of delivery and the damage a Tory mayor would do to London.
Great being back out on the
#LabourDoorstep
with the
@mmlabour
and
@Siobhain_Mc
team in Mitcham this morning - many backing
@SadiqKhan
for re-election as mayor and our superb assembly member
@LeonieC
. Lots of support for Sadiq’s plans to build 40,000 new council homes by 2030.
Great to be out with
@BarnetLabour
tonight and helping my good friends
@anne_clarke
and
@alan_s01
get elected in Cricklewood - hopefully come May 5th we will see the first ever majority for Labour on Barnet Council and the end of 20 years of Conservative control.
So many good conversations tonight in the Railway Terraces.
Residents rightly furious about Barnet Conservatives’ Johnsonian level of dishonesty over the B&Q application.
The new Mitcham Bridge is finally open to pedestrians, cyclists and cars. Great to finally ride my bike over the new bridge with its segregated cycle lanes.
Barnstorming speech from
@SadiqKhan
at
#LabLon24
about his achievements in London since 2016 including delivering record numbers of council homes, freezing fares for the 5th time, and providing free school meals for primary school children.
Proud to be once again be re-elected as a
@UKLabour
councillor for Pollards Hill for a sixth term on
@Merton_Council
after 20 years’ service with
@JoanHen15319178
and
@aidanmundy
- look forward to working with residents and being their strong voice in the community
What London faces if they elect Susan Hall on May 2 - that’s why it’s important to re-elect
@SadiqKhan
and build a city that is fairer, safer and greener for all.
The council has taken immediate action to rectify this situation. We have insisted that Ford replace each of the felled trees with new semi-mature trees, plant additional trees along the nearby riverside and work with our schools on environmental projects. 2/4
Good to see this low traffic neighbourhood scheme implemented at Commonside East, Mitcham - one of a number introduced over the last week by
@Merton_Council
Working this morning to get the superb
@MelanieFelt
elected as a
@CroydonLabour
councillor for Park Hill and Whitgift in the council by-election,
@MinsuR
as London Assembly member and
@SadiqKhan
re-elected as mayor alongside Croydon South Labour candidate
@BenJLTaylor
Certainly reaped the benefits of increased physical exercise over the last year including getting on my bike after an absence of nearly 30 years. Highly recommended.
Physical activity is the equivalent of a wonder drug.
Being active reduces our risk of:
📉diabetes by 35-50%
💚heart disease by 20-35%
😀depression by 20-30%
📉 all cause mortality 20-35%.
It's as simple as going for walk. 🚶♀️🚶♀️🚶♀️
Congratulations to my great friend
@NDIrons
on her selection as Labour candidate for Croydon East. Absolutely great news and knew she’ll be absolutely fantastic.
As from September,
@Merton_Council
will be introducing 26 school streets across our borough on top of the existing 4. Making the environment outside our schools safer along with encouraging walking and cycling to schools.
Ended a busy day back in my own ward of Pollards Hill tonight campaigning alongside
@Siobhain_Mc
and our London Assembly candidate
@LeonieC
along with
@UsaamaK
and Brenda. Lots of engaging doorstep chats with many supporting Leonie and
@SadiqKhan
re-election as Mayor on May 2.
I also was also very upset that a good friend of mine who was on the left of the party, very active, and a Labour member for 41 years today resigned after Chris Williamson was let back in. Deeply dismayed that yet again we have failed to act on anti-Semitism.
Lovely morning out with a large
@MMLabour
team on the
#LabourDoorstep
in Mitcham and great to meet many who are using their three votes for
@SadiqKhan
as mayor,
@LeonieC
for London Assembly, and
@LondonLabour
on the list. Also reminding people on the need for photo id to vote.
Absolutely delighted to be re-elected to the
@LondonLabour
regional exec with
@borakwon
for Merton, Wandsworth, Westminster, Kensington & Chelsea and Hammersmith & Fulham. Look forward to working to get
@SadiqKhan
re-elected as mayor and Labour success at the election.
#Lonlab24
It was great to be out on the Labour Doorstep in Wimbledon with the Mayor of London
@SadiqKhan
and Merton & Wandsworth London Assembly member
@LeonieC
with Wimbledon Labour candidate
@eleanorSW19
. Lots of support with many planning to re-elect Sadiq and Leonie on May 2nd.
Over the next week, the selection to be Labour’s candidate for Croydon and Sutton on the London Assembly will be taking place. I look forward to speaking with members and setting out why I want to represent Croydon and Sutton on the London Assembly.
Out in Wimbledon with our hardworking Mayor of London
@SadiqKhan
always standing up for London in funding extra police, investing in community projects, building more council housing, introducing the Hopper bus fare and tackling the causes of crime. Joined by
@LeonieC
.
Absolutely sickening what One Wandsworth are doing to
@Jo_Earlsfield
- a powerful advocate for active travel who’s down some great work and no politician of any party should have to face this kind of behaviour.
Great to be supporting a campaign fundraiser for
@LiamConlon2
and
@DannyBeales
at the London Irish Centre - inspiring speeches from
@SadiqKhan
on the contribution of the Irish community in London and from
@LouHaigh
.
Appalled by the decision of the Labour NEC not to endorse the IHRA definition of anti-Semitism and can fully understand the extreme anger felt by many of my
@JewishLabour
friends at our complete failure to tackle it within the party.
They have also agreed to give a significant financial contribution to local community allotments. We’re pleased that Ford is swiftly making good on the destruction it has caused, but we do not rule out taking further action. We continue to seek advice from our legal team. 3/4
Finally got the Brexit composite agreed at
#Lab2018
after a marathon 5-hour debate. Glad to get my parts included from
@labourirish
about no hard border in any form for goods, services and people.
We’re delighted to introduce more e-buses entering service, this time on Route 93. Go-Ahead London's Engineering Director, Richard Harrington said: This is the culmination of a year's planning. My thanks to all who have made this happen, especially
@TfL
and the local team.
Great initiative in encouraging Merton residents to hire a Brompton bike for free. Since becoming a regular cyclist again last year, I know how much it actually helps your health and wellbeing.
We’re delighted to be joining forces with
@BromptonHire
&
@HadleyProperty
to launch
#CYCLE42
, a pop-up cycle hub giving
#Merton
residents the chance to hire a Brompton for 90 days, for free, to help improve physical & mental health. Find out more:
Always a joy going out on the doorstep in my own ward of Pollards Hill, whatever the weather it won’t stop us!
Met many supporters who have already returned their postal vote with many more planning to use their three votes on Thursday for
@SadiqKhan
,
@LeonieC
&
@LondonLabour
.
Discussing the introduction of 25 school streets on a webinar which
@Merton_Council
is introducing this term. Making the streets outside our schools safer including encouraging walking, cycling and scooting along with improving the environment.
As a councillor, I know first-hand the benefits that neighbourhood policing brings to an area in having identifiable police officers who know communities and I warmly welcome this pledge from
@SadiqKhan
to bring in more.
And in Merton we first introduced low traffic neighbourhoods in the 1970s and many others have been introduced in the 40 years since including a large number in my own ward Pollards Hill.
One part of the debate around LTNs & creating livable streets I find really odd is the sort of 'Hackney birther' argument, that says newcomers are imposing them on longstanding residents. Reality is 1st LTNs were created in Hackney by local people in 1970s before I was even born.
Extremely happy that every branch of
@MMLabour
has now voted in favour of reselecting
@Siobhain_MP
as Labour candidate at the next election. Thanks to all Labour members in my own branch of Pollards Hill & Longthornton who overwhelmingly voted in favour to reselect this morning.
It was great spending the day supporting the re-election campaigns of Labour Assembly members
@KrupeshHirani
and
@anne_clarke
before ending the day helping
@LeonieC
campaign in Merton. Many welcoming the record of
@SadiqKhan
in delivering for London & supporting his re-election.
Exactly 13 years ago today, the then
@UKLabour
government announced a £290m rebuild of St Helier Hospital after many years of campaigning by
@Siobhain_Mc
. Sadly the rebuild was stopped by the Tory/LibDem coalition. That’s the difference Labour in power makes.
Up bright and early today talking to commuters at Norbury station about the TfL fare freeze until 2025 thanks to the Mayor of London
@SadiqKhan
in contrast compared to the Tory government who are hiking rail fares by 4.9%. Helping Londoners through the cost-of living crisis.
Did you know… cycling is a more efficient way than cars to move people and prevent congestion?
Cycling can move up to SEVEN times more people than cars in the same space. Not everyone can or will cycle - but the more people who do, the less congested our roads will be.
Back in my ward of Pollards Hill tonight with
@Siobhain_Mc
and
@MMLabour
along with our excellent assembly member
@LeonieC
and fellow Labour list candidate
@borakwon
. Many planning to re-elect
@SadiqKhan
recognising his record of delivering for Londoners over the past 8 years.
Fantastic to hear from
@Keir_Starmer
at
@LondonLabour
conference and make an uplifting speech on the need for a Labour government to be elected at the next election after 13 damaging years under the Tories.
Another night back out on the
#LabourDoorstep
in Pollards Hill which I’ve been proud to represent for 22 years - great to meet many people who are using their three votes on May 2 to vote for
@SadiqKhan
as mayor,
@LeonieC
as assembly member, and
@LondonLabour
on the London list.
Huge thanks goes to our excellent
@LondonAssembly
member
@LeonieC
for bringing people together from the local community of Merton and Wandsworth at City Hall tonight, but also to
@SadiqKhan
for thanking everyone for their contribution and work in both boroughs.
The full result breakdown for Merton and Wandsworth for London Assembly member/list and mayor.
@LondonLabour
won all three votes and fantastic news that
@LeonieC
has been re-elected. I look forward to working with her as Assembly member over the next three years.
#LondonVotes
Fantastic to hear from our fantastic
@MayorofLondon
@SadiqKhan
at
#LonLab23
conference dinner especially the words of the late John Smith the night before he passed away: ‘the opportunity to serve our country is all we ask’. Shows the need for a Labour government to be elected.
Discussing the new segregated cycleway with
@TfL
along the A24 from Clapham Common to Colliers Wood via Balham and Tooting with councillors from Merton and Wandsworth. Helping to make cycling safer especially given the accident rate along this stretch of road.
Beautiful and moving tribute to the work of Margaret McDonagh at
#LabConf23
from Labour General Secretary David Evans with her lasting legacy being the creation of a leadership academy. Did so much for
@UKLabour
and
@MMLabour
and fitting tribute to all her work.
Got home at 2am after many hours supporting local people & working to ensure all residents were housed following further evacuations from Galpins Road today. Thanks to the many
@Merton_Council
staff that worked tirelessly in Pollards Hill today and assisted over 100 residents
