Iraq's protests are a reminder that street mobilisation remains a key factor in Iraqi politics. Protests are not (only) about water or corruption – they are now an alternative means to impact an Iraqi politics dominated by a few, and that has spun in circles since 2003.

Iraqi version of”Bella Ciao”: before becomig the anthem of anti-fascist resistance, the lyric was sung by Italian women working in extremely difficult conditions (bare feet with water up until their knees) in paddy rice fields of northern Italy in the 19th century. What a journey..
The protest movement offers Iraq’s political parties with an instructive experience: a leaderless movement, gathering people across sect, class and localities, mobilising thousands on a volontary basis

In Iraq, both Turkey and Iran are testing the limits of this U.S. administration. Biden's first test will be to balance diplomatic priorities--returning to JCPOA and repairing intra-NATO relations in the Eastern Mediterranean-- while signalling continued support to local allies.
In Iraq, Shiite politics–with all its diverse voices–is the space to watch. It's where the Iraqi political system, despite its resistance to change, takes on new shapes and transforms. This is where elections matter.

tensions are reaching a new critical stage. A nuclear deal and U.S. support for greater Arab-Iranian engagement can put breaks to this conflict,

No matter if Iraq’s PM will be able to turn US threats in his favor to rally domestic support against outlaws, the risks such threats generate exceed by far any gain the PM could get out of it. The US administration is gambling high and with the fate of another country..
The US has told Iraq's government + its diplomatic partners that it’s planning a full withdrawal from its Baghdad embassy unless Iraq reins in attacks on personnel linked to the American presence.
Women are underrepresented in the Iraqi government but are leaders in civic initiatives, often on a volonteering base. No channels to access formal politics other than party affiliation which offers quota but no space for introducing new policy agenda.

What's relevant of Iraqi PM's decree on PMU's full reintegration is not its actual implementation-which indeed remains challenging-but its potential to give Iraqi leaders additional legal/political means to insulate Iraq from U.S.-Iran confrontation
Iraqi prime minister abolished the PMUs also known as Hashd al-Shaabi.
It sounds good at first glance, but this actually means something else: this is complete incorporation of the force into the armed forces WHILE keeping its independent status. It maintains its leadership etc
Indeed. Worth mentioning the jail break in Abu Ghraib/Baghdad in July 2013 when hundreds of inmates fled. Despite the assurances of the MoI, this marked the beginning of a downward spiral towards the movement reorganization and resurgence.
Yesterday IS attacked a prison in Syria where hundreds of IS inmates are held.Jailbreaks & prison riots were a central component of IS resurgence in Iraq &is a serious threat in Syria today where the makeshift prisons (converted schools)aren't meant to hold prisoners indefinitely

Indeed. Above all, Washington should moderate expectations that Iraq’s PM will push back against Iran’s allies in Iraq quickly, before US elections. Pressure could lead Iraq’s PM to take hasty steps against Iran-backed paramilitaries and backfire on his ability to govern.
