As an openly identifying transfeminine vascular neurologist, since I transitioned….
The number of times I have had a speaking or new publication opportunity on stroke=0
The number of times I have published and spoken on gender minority healthcare=so many I need mentees
Just interviewed by the New York Times for my work with transgender community members with functional neurological disorder (FND).
Fingers crossed something meaningful comes out of this in published form 🤞

If you don’t know what functional neurological disorder (FND) is, please visit this website:
FND is one of the most common diagnoses that outpatient neurologists treat.
For those not in the know, currently when I publish an article on the
#trans
community, I often get more
#hate
responses than positive ones.
I can use more support from the

and

communities. My sole goal and mission is to make healthcare more affirming
If my four-year old can learn they/them pronouns, so can a physician with 20+ years of education. It’s really not harder than residency training, and you did that.

Diversity, including gender diversity, is something to celebrate and champion. Health systems should learn from NewYork-Presbyterian, who is helping to lead this effort. We can only fully treat our patients if we respect them, ourselves, and each other.

🚨We have a new paper out today in

We examined 2 hypotheses:
1. That youth identify as
#trans
due to "social contagion" & adolescents assigned female are more susceptible
2. That youth identify as trans to flee LGB-related stigma
Neither was supported by data. 🧵

At my lowest moment during gender transition (when I couldn’t find anyone else to provide me research opportunities),
@jack_turban
welcomed me into his lab and supported my career.
We need more transgender doctors providing clinical care to and being involved in research on the transgender community.
I often am asked by colleagues “what can I do to help my transgender patients and coworkers?”
For me, the main difference in publishing on stroke neurology and transgender neurology is the amount of hate mail I receive for the latter.
Trans identities are here, no amount of juvenile tricks and lashing out will change that.
(1/2) Please read our new article published in the Journal of Child Neurology, describing a case series of four trans/nonbinary adolescents in Texas diagnosed with functional neurological disorder.

Is it legal to film someone without their consent in the UK?
What is the crime being investigated?
This whole situation is absurd and trans people should not be treated this way. How someone responds in self-defense while being a victim of a hate crime should not be questioned
I know I am new to this. But my experiences with the

community has been some of the greatest of my life. I’ve learned many people living with FND see value in the wounded, and uplift the stigmatized. I am lucky to meet everyone I have.

To do:
-Ask “how can I support you”?
-Affirm their gender, use their pronouns and chosen name, be a role model
-Educate yourself
-Advocate for

with leadership
-Have grace & compassion
I’ve started to receive feedback from multiple trans and nonbinary medical students applying to the

AND you are not mentoring transgender mentees,
Then you are not being a good ally.

Today is
#FunctionalNeurologicalDisorder
Awareness Day.
Although the disorder is not well known to many people,
#FND
is actually one of the most common conditions that neurologists like myself encounter. In FND, abnormal brain functioning causes symptoms to appear.
@jack_turban
The prognosis for functional neurological disorder (FND) depends on how compassionately and empathetically a diagnosing neurologist informs the patient of the diagnosis, as it effects the likelihood the patient will follow up with a referral to a psychotherapist.
So true, we need to protect physician activists from retaliation from the healthcare industry, to make changes important for our patients’ health and safety
Been thinking a lot about how there is an awesome "new wave" of physician advocates speaking up for marginalized communities and people.
Hospitals need to be figuring out how to protect those people more as they do that work in the public sphere.
I believe in Neurology: Clinical Practice because it is a fastly growing journal that accepts diversity topics. Proud to be on the editorial board and contribute the MOST on-time peer reviews to the journal in 2023.

The authentic me. Still an active contributor to innovative healthcare, Mobile Neurology, and telehealth initiatives at NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital.
I have been accused of using my transgender identity to advance my career. Trust me, being transgender in no way makes a career in academic medicine easier. But we are all playing the hand we were dealt, including transphobes being jealous a transwoman is successful in medicine
