Secretary of State Shenna Bellows issued this decision regarding three challenges brought by Maine voters to the nomination petitions of Donald J. Trump for the Republican primary for the President of the United States. Read the decision here:
SCAM ALERT: Officials in two states have confirmed that residents are receiving calls from an imposter posing as TurboVote, offering voter registration by phone and absentee ballots. This is illegal. Do not share any personal information - just hang up.
People’s veto effort to repeal ranked-choice voting in the pres. primary and general election does not have enough valid signatures to move fwd to a vote. With 61,334 valid signatures, it's short of the 63,067 threshold. Thus, RCV will be in effect for the Nov. 3 pres. election.
The results you’ve all been waiting and watching for!

Rest assured, all ballot boxes containing actual ballots are not only locked but also have a serialized seal that cannot be reconnected. The chain of custody for Mainers' ballots is very strict and anyone involved in the transport process must sign off on it.
Our online absentee ballot request service has seen more than 20K requests in just one day! Mainers are definitely getting prepared for the Nov. 3 election. Request your ballot here:

Absentee voting for this election is at historic levels: As of today, more than 500K ballots issued and only 55K of those are still outstanding. If you're among the 55K, please complete and return your absentee ballot ASAP so your clerk has more time to work on the processing.
We have calculated the costs to be reimbursed for the CD2 ranked-choice recount, which took place Dec. 6-7 and 10-14.

TOTAL: $14,560.52
Less the $5,000 deposit, the Poliquin campaign will owe the State $9,560.52.
A warm welcome to our new Deputy Secretary of State Joann Bautista, who will be a policy advisor in Secretary Bellows' office. The daughter of Mexican immigrants, Bautista will be Maine’s first Latina Deputy Secretary of State. She is a

1/3 Voters, be assured that any delay in unofficial election results from your municipality on Election Night is not a cause for concern. Per Maine law, clerks actually have 2 days to send unofficial results to our office, and many continue their tabulation work into Weds.
Our newly redesigned Absentee Ballot Request Service is now live: You can request your ballot now and your clerk will mail it out to you when ballots become available in early October.

Our office is aware of pending litigation regarding the ranked choice voting tabulation process. We are continuing to process ballots toward the final tabulation and will review any court orders with our legal advisors.
Mainers should be so proud of our strong turnout rate! Maine voters know that our elections are safe, secure and accurate, and that their vote matters.
Minnesota and Maine, two states that frequently have led the nation in voter turnout for U.S. House elections, also topped the table in 2022, with turnout in each reaching about 60% of eligible voters.
We are pleased to announce the launch of a new service for this election: the accessible absentee ballot, which will allow voters with disabilities to vote independently from home. It goes live Oct. 2!

The design of the new standard-issue license plates were unveiled today! Starting in May 2025, Mainers who have the Chickadee Plate will get either the Pine Tree Plate or a plain plate with similar colors.
For now, Mainers don't need to do anything. 1/2
The ruling on my lawsuit seeking the release of Presidential Advisory Commission on Election Integrity correspondence was issued this afternoon in my favor: The commission has until July 18 to provide the materials.
Per the court's ruling yesterday, the RCV people's veto question will not be on the Nov. 3 ballot, and the pres. race will be subject to ranked-choice. We thank the Court for their swift clarification, as we must print ballots to meet our federal deadlines for overseas voters.
Maine first established same day voter registration in 1973. It safeguards against accidental or improper voter purges, and eliminates voter disenfranchisement due to missed deadlines. Same-day reg increases participation, is non-partisan and increases voter convenience.

3/3 Our office does not have an Election Night reporting system for the public, and releases only the official results after all the certification work is done, 20 days after the election. Any results you see before then, reported in the media, are unofficial.
If you hear your town is running low on ballots, no worries- we are granting permission to municipalities (upon request) to photocopy ballots as needed. They'll be hand-counted, as tabulators cannot process them. Be assured: You will receive a ballot and it will be counted!
Today is National Voter Registration Day! If you're new to Maine, were previously too young to register, or you've moved or changed your name since you last voted, you'll need to register to vote or update your registration to be

Reminder: If you choose to deliver your absentee ballot via dropbox, you must use ONLY your own town or city's dropbox. You must submit your ballot to YOUR municipal clerk, who has access to only their own ballot dropbox at your town/city hall.
Ballot processing begins again today at 10 am in the CD2 race. Lots of work to be done to upload 190 more towns’ ballots and certify everything before we can run the final tabulation.
As we were reaching the final steps tonight, we encountered an issue getting data from two memory devices, one each from Bangor and Hampden. As such, we’ll need to retrieve all the ballots from those municipalities so we can scan them tomorrow. 1/2
In Maine you can register in person up to and including Election Day, but if you plan to mail in your registration, it needs to be received by your municipal clerk by close of business on Tuesday, Oct. 18.

Wrapping up RCV processing for today, expecting to finish uploading ballots from Hancock County. So far, Aroostook, Androscoggin and Franklin counties' votes uploaded. Still need to scan in ballots from 7 more counties, and then certify it all! Work continues tomorrow at 9 a.m.

Wrapping up for the day. We’re partway through Somerset County towns and then it’s on to Waldo and Washington, and more certifying. Back at 9 am tomorrow.
“Maine’s no excuse absentee voting law is a big reason our elections are accessible, safe and secure. Mainers less busy lives, or they may find it difficult to vote in-person on Election Day, and no excuse absentee voting ensures they can make their voices heard.” — Sec. Bellows
It is a well-established fact of parliamentary law that legislative bodies determine the qualifications of their members, not courts. Today’s decision affirms that the court understands its role in safeguarding our elections, and the role of the SOS office as well.
This certificate is now on its way to the U.S. House of Representatives, where they will swear in and seat Maine CD2 Rep.-Elect Jared Golden on Jan. 3, 2019.
I’ve signed off on the CD2 election result as it’s no longer in federal court. Ranked Choice Voting didn’t result in a true majority as promised-simply a plurality measured differently. It didn’t keep big money out of politics & didn’t result in a more civil election

Today a Texas resident tweeted to cause false alarm and panic about the security of Maine’s election infrastructure. There is none. Right after an election, voting results are submitted to our office as part of the official canvass. 1/x
Ballot processing begins again in just a few minutes, 9-5 pm today. About 75 towns ballots' left to scan, and certification before we can run the tabulation.
Secretary Bellows testified today in support of LD 148 “An Act To Establish Ongoing Absentee Voting.” The bill provides a process for a voter to request absentee voter status for all elections. “This is a simple step we can take toward our goal of making voting more accessible."
Mainers should be incredibly proud of our safe, secure and accurate elections in which we are a national leader in voter participation. As Secretary of State I will vigorously defend Mainers’ freedom to vote, and fight against any efforts to make it harder for Maine voters to 1/2

The Voting Rights Act needs attention now
One of the great achievements of American democracy could be erased in our time if we do not fight to save it.

It is vital that we protect the local election workers at the frontlines of running our elections and ensuring all Maine citizens are able to vote. Our democracy depends on it.
And our last polling location visit for the day — Penobscot Nation! Thank you to all Maine’s hardworking clerks getting ready for and running our elections today!
A Voter ID requirement does nothing to advance election integrity. When we say that a voter ID requirement at the polls is a solution for which there is no documented problem- that statement is rooted in experience.
2/3 The focus of our office, and of municipal election clerks, is on accuracy rather than speed, so we can assure all Mainers that their vote is properly reflected in the final results.
