Happy Friday!! Take a moment to read the Op-ed I wrote for Teen Vogue (link below) it provides details about Biden's power to cancel student debt. The beauty of being part of
@StrikeDebt
is we're a union made up of borrowers and allies ready and willing to tell our stories!
sad part is the city is gonna waste a bunch of money covering up the art. but nobody had a problem with the building being vacant for years while thousands of unhoused folks suffer on the street.
"I avoided student loan debt by not going to college."
"I avoided the high cost of raising a family by never having kids."
"I avoided skyrocketing rents by living with my parents."
but like, what if we didn't have to plan our entire lives based on avoiding financial turmoil?
The "worthless degree" argument is fascinating to me because education shouldn't be a commodity. We should be able to pursue our interests and passions. Also, social workers, artists, journalists and teachers shouldn't be so devalued in this society. These wages are ridiculous.
DID YOU KNOW THAT A BLACK WOMAN INVENTED GRUNGE?! Well, her name was Tina Bell and she learned how to sing at Mount Zion Baptist church in Seattle. Her first show was at Langston Hughes performing arts center. She was lead singer of the band, Bam Bam.
unpopular opinion: everyone deserves student debt cancellation. I don't care how long you worked at a nonprofit. I don't care what you majored in. I don't even care if you dropped out. the debt itself should never have existed to begin with. college shouldn't be a debt sentence.
@MAD_lines
PPP loans were to pay employees after the government mandated that they couldnโt go to work to earn their money. this is not the same as knowingly and willingly signing up for an expensive loan
Nobody gets "left with the tab" when student debt is cancelled. It doesn't cost taxpayers. This is one of like five raggedy ass arguments conservatives have to rely on to justify disrupting relief for the working class. They just keep repeating it over and over as if it's true.
look, just so we're clear: the government is choosing violence by lifting the pause on student loan payments.
those who can't pay will be forced into default, which can lead to wage or social security check garnishment.
and 2/3 of student debtors are women.
I'm just so happy Megan is alive. I'm so happy Keke is alive. I really want to live in a world where Black women are cherished, loved, supported and believed. I'm going to keep trying to build that world.
I'll never recover from the fact that PPP loan forgiveness went down so swiftly, benefiting mostly rich folks (including GOP politicians) who don't even need the damn money,
but millions of working class student debtors have had to fight tooth and nail for crumbs of relief
โI want to live the rest of my life, however long or short, with as much sweetness as I can decently manage, loving all the people I love, and doing as much as I can of the work I still have to do.โ

Isn't it soooo fun being a woman in this society and different body types just go in and out of style like garments but somehow - even throughout the eras - whatever your body type actually is isn't ever quite adequate enough??!?
your daily reminder: the biden admin has legal power to cancel all fed student debt and immediately free over 40 million borrowers this xmas. ppl could get gifts, food and be stress free, but they're choosing not to even though it's popular among voters + the right thing to do.
people go to school to enrich their lives and for better wages. people have children for all kids of reasons and shit happens (esp without reproductive rights) and not everyone can move back in with their parents. people do the best they can. we all deserve financial security.
Why does this matter?! Because Bam Bam is largely unknown. Also, black folks from Seattle have a particular melancholy creative sound that is so often swiftly appropriated. I know this from first hand experience. I am proud to continue the creative legacy of black Seattle.
truth is, cancelling ALL fed student debt is a bottom-up stimulus that would benefit our economy. the mechanism to erase the debt already exists. no need for applications or means-testing. they can do it immediately, but Dems are dragging their feet.
debtors must demand relief.
Good morning to everyone except for student debt relief opponents who make the same corny arguments repeatedly. Here's a thread of these bogus claims and how to debunk them:
this will be catastrophic for working class families who need money for rent and food.
never forget that the government can just discharge the debt. yes, as easily as they forgave PPP loans.
why put people through unnecessary turmoil unless the suffering is the point?
Bam Bam played at lots of local clubs where Kurt Cobain frequented - along with other white men that would later become wildly famous for the seductive Grunge sound.
Medical debt shouldn't exist. Student loan debt shouldn't exist. Carceral debt shouldn't exist. I can't believe I have to keep saying this, but school lunch debt shouldn't exist either. Americans shouldn't have to go into debt to get their basic needs met.
The fact that Joe Biden has the power to continuously extend the pause on student loan payments again and again is proof that he ALSO has the power to cancel ALL student loan debt. Our organizing and applying pressure works. Student loan debt is illegitimate.
Today is Nia Wilson's birthday and she would have been 21 years old. May she rest in POWER.

and just like that...let this be a reminder that it's also that easy to cancel all federal student loan debt. the federal government owns the debt and can simply choose not to collect on it.
watch how effortlessly the money moves and remember it doesn't have to be this way.
BREAKING: The House of Representatives just voted to give Israel $14.3 billion in more weapons to deepen US complicity in Israel's genocidal attacks against Palestinians in Gaza. A shameful day in Congress.
Reasons why I won't be paying back my student loans: the Biden admin can discharge ALL fed student debt as swiftly as they bailed out Silicon Valley Bank, as expeditiously as they bypassed Congress to fund the war machine. And it would cost taxpayers $0
what are YOUR reasons?
let me get this straight...
I took out a predatory student loan for college before my pre frontal cortex was fully developed,
but I'm somehow more morally bankrupt than than a bunch of bankers who benefit from actual bankruptcy protections?
friendly reminder that college was affordable - even free in some states - in the 1950s. it was the gradual fear of Black and brown students allowed to set foot on college campuses, plus what Reagan dubbed an, "educated proletariat" that turned education into a commodity.
any other millennials or gen z feel torn between adulting and saving money for a future that feels increasingly bleak, and cherishing the moment by splurging on what brings joy in the here and now?
student debt cancellation doesn't benefit the rich. you know why I know this?
because if it did then then they would have cancelled it already. maybe in less than 48 hours. maybe over the weekend.
Biden recently announced plans for another round of federal student loan cancellation. I want to emphasize that if his administration can cancel billions so far, then it's entirely possible to eliminate ALL outstanding fed student debt. And NOT doing so is a deliberate choice...

@BISBAAS_
I feel her so much because palestinians have captured every aspect of this genocide, from the ppl buried under rubble, to children going hungry and air strikes lighting up the night sky. yet the bombing still won't stop ๐
he was so ready to commit egregious harm over a job, a lousy paycheck that pales in comparison to rich CEOs exploiting workers for profit. this is the brainwashing we are up against.
look, everybody needs to stop saying "student debt forgiveness"
education should never have become a debt sentence...
like, imagine pursuing college to try and better your life, and then being told you've done something morally wrong because you're too poor to pay for it.
the department of Ed can legally discharge, not just up to 20k, but ALL federal student loan debt.
think about it.
the government owns the debt and can choose not to collect on it. programs like pslf are examples of this.
so are the payment pauses.
so why keep us indebted?
the government wants to bail out Silicon Valley Bank quietly, wants us to let it go through as business as usual,
while millions of student debtors are vilified for making what was sold to them as a sound investment - education.
we can't it that happen without making noise.
listen, billionaires aren't free.
we pay for them with past due medical bills, subpar hospitals & shorter life expectancies.
we pay for them with dilapidated apartment buildings, evicted mothers & children.
we pay for them with private prisons, crooked cops & carceral debt.
BREAKING NEWSโ๏ธone of the lawsuits being brought against Biden's student debt relief plan argues a student loan servicer, MOHELA, would be financially harmed if the plan goes through.
turns out that's FALSE. not only will they not be harmed, but they stand to profit. ๐ก
"student debt relief is unfair because it costs taxpayers money!!!"
please, for the love of yahweh, listen carefully:
nobody's taxes went up when the government canceled $400 billion in PPP loans and nobody's taxes will go up if the government cancels student loan debt!
The U.S. Department of Ed has acted like a predatory lender for far too long. Imagine scamming millions of working class Americans into some of the most legally binding loans (with some of the highest interest rates) then making it nearly impossible to escape through bankruptcy.
Reesa Teesa, creator of the โWho TF Did I Marryโ series tells the Biden administration and Department of education she canโt afford her student debt payment
โIโm not being funny. I ainโt got it yโall.โ
@DuckJones1
we say this because the department of education ALREADY cancels billions in student debt and they do it automatically, which means they already have the legal authority. imagine if they just automatically decided not to collect on ALL the debt THEY own.
@Phil_Lewis_
I'm not surprised because how else do you get someone to fall in love so fast? they push them into these really emotionally intense situations and then pressure them to find someone - anyone - to match with so they can continue on the show.
Imagine if the Department of Education actually helped millions attain quality education instead of acting like a predatory lender and corrupt debt collector.
Shamell Bell captured this photo of a group of black farmers protesting outside of the white house right next to our

theatre action.
it's all connected.
look, canceling student debt is good for the economy.
don't let anybody tell you otherwise.
discharging all student debt would free up people's finances to get married, start families, buy homes, etc...
and I don't wanna hear about inflation when GREEDflation is rampant.
Here me out: where is the dating app for sexy progressive creatives who just want to ride out the fall of capitalism, split living expenses, and be safely vulnerable with someone sincerely invested in collective liberation?
just wait till the debt strike!
- student debt
- medical debt
- rent debt
- carceral debt
- school lunch debt
people need education, healthcare, housing, safe communities and food. we ain't paying!
The writers are striking.
The actors are striking.
The mail services are striking.
Even the sea animals are striking.
The ppl of Atlanta are fighting back against tyranny.
Despite all destabilizing efforts, organizing, on-ground and digital, remains.
& people are waking up.
let this sink in: it took 72 hours for the government to save silicon valley bank and its investors. it took a little over a year for PPP loan cancellation to go through. compare that to student debt relief. some people wait ten or twenty years for their net worth to be $0.
look, this is great for YOU. now imagine the feeling you're feeling right now but 45 million people feeling it. imagine sighs of relief, the down payments on homes, the boost in our entire economy.
Biden has the legal authority to make that happen for us ALL.
HAPPY PRIDE! ๐ณ๏ธโ๐

student debt is about punishment. millions of us working class folks debt-finance our basic needs - not just college but healthcare, housing, some of us have even have to pay for our own imprisonment. our debts are wealthy people's assets. they're robbing us twice.
reasons why I won't be paying back my student loans: the government doesn't need my money, banks get bailed out, billionaires don't pay taxes, I don't feel like it, aliens might exist, with what money? most of these politicians paid $50 in tuition back in their day - just no.
listen, people who say we should only cancel up to 50k in student debt are missing the point. what makes this number that much better than 10k? or 20k? why not $65,456 instead?
or how about ALL OF IT because why tf not? if $1 of student debt is predatory, so is $1.7 trillion.
yo, everybody is talking about a few billionaires lost in a tube at the bottom of the ocean.
meanwhile, almost 20 million student loans borrowers are holding their breath, hoping a corrupt Supreme Court allows Biden to cancel their debt balances so they can be ZEROaires.
hey besties! it's mercury retrograde so watch out for shenanigans like:
- exes trying to text you
- miscommunication
- the Biden administration unveiling a SAVE student debt repayment plan that actually costs people more money
yo, it isn't creepy to ya'll that so many folks in this country are working poor - having to decide between food or rent - yet, each time the air quality is bad we're told to stay inside?
ya'll realize less people are gonna have an inside to go to if things don't change, right?
So you agree, means-testing student debt relief allows the state to define "good" and "bad" borrowers? They just make this shit up because punishment is the point.
look, only student debtors and our allies understand how vicious it is to lift the pause on student loan payments when people are struggling to make ends meet in this economy.
to add insult to injury, the government doesn't even need our money. it's a poverty tax, a punishment.
for the zillionth time, student debt relief doesn't cost taxpayers money
it doesn't cost taxpayers when people get PSLF and it wouldn't cost taxpayers if the fed government chose not to collect on the debt owed by 50 million Americans - a debt that shouldn't exist.
yo, we have to refuse to pay these student loans because the ruling class is never gonna stop. my mom took out 30k to go to grad school and paid back 60k, but my loan interest is higher and wages are stagnant + the cost of living has increased. think about it...
yep and that's one of the reasons why student debt shouldn't exist. working class people are forced to go into debt to get an education to qualify for a job with quality health benefits. this is why getting a college degree is tied to overall life expectancy.
Tara Turk-Haynes ๐ฉ๐พโ๐ป (on Threads - softer)
look, Biden can still cancel student loan debt.
I need y'all to resist the notion that widespread debt relief is some emergency, out-of-the-blue thing that rarely happens.
the department of education uses its legal powers to modify and discharge federal debts all the time!
@ms_livyyy
@houdaniii
Exactly, also an apology without changed behavior isn't an apology at all and the problem is you kinda have to stick around to see the changed behavior...sometimes it ain't even worth all that time just for the possibility of disappointment.
is this a threat???
look, the word is out that the Dems could discharge ALL federal student debt if they wanted to.
restarting payments is punishment at this point - esp towards the most distressed and disenfranchised borrowers.
people be like "noooo, it's IMPOSSIBLE to strike student debt." are ya'll for real? 40% of borrowers opted out of paying back their loans since the end of the pause. it's literally already happening.
why are there so many payday loan places in poor neighborhoods? why is it so easy to get a credit card when you can't afford your healthcare costs? why did the feds allow teens to sign up for a lifetime of debt to pursue higher education? debt is about control.
@JAYVERSACE
@_k1pepeo
IKR...and secondly, we need to STOP. CALLING. BLACK. CHILDREN. BAD. That's internalized racism. Many Black children deal w/ high levels of trauma.
@TorraineWalker
I ultimately agree, but the problem is straight Black men RARELY direct that same level of disgust at so called โangry Black women/queersโ towards changing their own incredibly oppressive behaviors or calling out their peers.
It always costs WAY less to automatically cancel debts compared to hounding people to pay them back.
the government can also immediately cancel ALL fed student loan debt, but they choose to waste money contracting private companies, keeping you on hold or losing your paperwork.
The U.S. government has halted some efforts to collect an estimated $62 billion in past-due pandemic loans made to small businesses, concluding that aggressive attempts to recover the money could cost more than simply writing off the debt
yesssss! ya'll, that's me. we are called
@StrikeDebt
and we use all kinds of household debt as leverage, not just to fight for cancellation, but also to demand public goods - college, healthcare, housing and more! join us!
ya'll notice how politicians are announcing medical debt cancellation a lot lately? it's a popular move and a good one. but we can't afford to miss the plot: we don't just want to cancel the debt, we want a healthcare system that doesn't put people in debt in the first place.
Biden's student debt relief plan is legal. One of the reasons why its being brought to SCOTUS next week is because of a network of conservative billionaires.
Now why would they want to keep working class Americans cemented in a lifetime of debt? You tell me.
Who's trying to kill your student debt relief?
You might have heard that a random, ordinary woman brought the Supreme Court lawsuit to halt debt cancellation.
But the truth is that a shady network of conservative billionaires is behind the whole thing.
good morning.
the Biden admin threatening to
lift the pause on student loan payments in June is a form of economic violence.
I'm getting messages from ppl who can't afford to pay an extra $500 a month.
for what? a debt that shouldn't
& doesn't have to exist?
do you guys ever think about how many of us are working three jobs to pay rent, dealing with depression from crushing student debt, have no savings and barely any of us have access to quality healthcare, but we're told financial success is all about "personal responsibility"?
