People working together for a safer, healthier community in Streatham Wells. Campaigning for measures to reduce traffic volume and speed on our streets.
What a wonderful community ride on the safe streets of Streatham Wells.
Meeting neighbours and new friends for the first time.
This would have been impossible a month ago.
A child and their parent happily cycling home from after school club along Leigham Court Road.
The Streatham Wells LTN has given them a safe route to and from school 🙏
Thank you
@lambeth_council
"We don't live in the LTN. I found it nerve-wracking cycling on Valley Rd with kids on our bike before. It's now so much safer. We use the LTN to help them learn to ride because it feels like a safe space. We want to remain car free and this is helping us!"
#storiesfromtheLTN
Come rain or shine, Valley Road and the rest of Streatham Wells are now OPEN FOR CYCLING FOR EVERYONE 🚲🌧️☀️🎉
Just look at what is made possible by taking out the thousands of rat running cars using these streets to avoid the main roads
Sunday lunch in Streatham. The only difference now is that there are no safe routes in the side roads. What are you going to do about this mess

"We've totally changed our behaviour since the LTN. We have a car but use it so much less, I cycle to work, choose a lime bike or walk to the gym, we walk our dog to the common. I hear birds singing on our streets and when I cycle home at night I feel safe"
#StoriesFromTheLTN
On Tuesday eve a member of our group took a sample of the no. of people in each private car at a point on Streatham High Road.
In 20 mins (18:45-19:05):
1 person - 47 cars
2 people - 18 cars
3 people - 3 cars
4 people - 0 cars
5 people - 0 cars
Efficient use of roadspace?
A street transformed.
From daily jams and accidents for 10k cars a day to a calm and happy place for children to cycle to school
Low traffic neighbourhoods are amazing
Who should we prioritise on our streets?
The school run before the Streatham Wells LTN // The school run after the Streatham Wells LTN.
We know which we prefer ❤️
It's still very early days, but already children are able to travel through our neighbourhood more safely
The soothing sights and sound of a neighbourhood dominated by cars trying to squeeze down completely unsuitable streets. An LTN can not come soon enough.

#StreathamWellsLTN
needs an urgent approach to implementation. We're living with unacceptable danger from speeding traffic cutting through our neighbourhood. A motorcyclist hit by a car last week and a schoolboy hit by a car on 4 Dec are just two of many serious incidents.
The sun sets on a Streatham Wells that for decades has suffered from prioritisation of motor vehicles above all else.
Tomorrow we get to try a new model. Safer, greener, cleaner.
Welcome to the Streatham Wells Low Traffic Neighbourhood. 🌲🌳🚸🚲🚶♀️🌻
Here we are again. Back to the beginning.
Valley Road completely unsafe and full of traffic.
This is why we started campaigning 6 years ago.
This is why
@lambeth_council
put in an LTN.
What is the answer to this danger now? Is this acceptable?
@RezinaChowdhury
@clairekholland
This is a myth. Traffic and congestion was regularly terrible inside and outside the LTN area. Streatham is almost famous for it. The difference was that drivers had a choice of which traffic jam to sit in, and no one had a choice for a safe route to cycle or walk.
@StephenFeberLtd
It might also be observed that traffic flowed pretty smoothly before the introduction of the
#StreathamWellsLTN
and that Lambeth, as a local traffic authority, has a statutory responsibility to ensure the expeditious movement of traffic on its road network.
Feeling calm and much safer both within the LTN and outside. Photos of Valley Road, Gleneldon Road and Streatham Common North taken this morning between 8:50-9:00.
Thank you so much
@RezinaChowdhury
and
@MalcolmClark77
A stonking result in Lambeth (& London) for active travel and safer streets. We were repeatedly told by a small & shouty group that schemes like LTNs weren't democratic, had no mandate and weren't popular. Well here is the answer. They are, they are and they are. Let's crack on!
Well that didn't take long. The mess we have been dealt here is appalling. We are lacking even the crumbs of basic safety infrastructure we had before the LTN. This is shameful and we need attention on making us safe now.
@RezinaChowdhury
@lambeth_council
@clairekholland
Hey
@MayorofLondon
No need to blame the Streatham Wells LTN for congestion on this
@TfL
road. All flowing nicely and working for all road users in tonights rush hour on Streatham High Road.

I've been proud to live in this community for many many years. Tonight I saw the worst of human behaviour at a
@streathamaction
meeting to discuss the Streatham Wells LTN.
Debate is impossible when it turns into personal abuse.
Streatham High Road is very busy and congested due to significant road works.
Suspending or cancelling the LTN and routing the traffic from a major A road into local streets won't help. It would just create congestion on even more streets. Here's a reminder from before the LTN.
Children can now safely cycle through Streatham Wells to get to the playground, the common and the shops.
Reply if you love LTNs!

"My heart is no longer in my mouth when my young grandchildren come. Before, the speeding traffic & aggressive driving made crossing the road difficult & dangerous
Now there's hardly any traffic. It's a pleasure to live here - back to how it was 15 years ago"
#StoriesFromTheLTN
Some perspective is needed.
This is a relatively minor set of traffic management measures to fix issues on our streets.
No one is banning cars. At worst there are a few new routes to learn. At best we might use our cars less.
Thrilled to see that the Streatham Hill and Tulse Hill LTNs will be made permanent! 🥳 Thank you
@lambeth_council
.
Hopefully not long until we see these extremely positive changes applied in Streatham Wells -> motor traffic down, active travel up 🙏
Bus journey times from Brixton to the Streatham dip are back to - or even better than - pre LTN times in tonights rush hour.
What a difference it makes when the roadworks are finished.

@willnorman
@RezinaChowdhury
What's this? Another report showing that LTNs work and that they are popular.
Except this time it's from the government who've been trying to undermine them.
Sad to see mindless vandalism of LTN infrastructure over recent days. We all lose.
Residents have been been busy fixing the signs that keep us safe.
V useful meeting with police today - confirmed they work closely with council on cracking down on criminal damage, esp cameras
Streatham Wells LTN installation starts 9th October with the LTN going live shortly after 🙌
Bring on:
- safer streets
- cleaner air
- greater choice
- better public realm
🎊
Great to finally see cameras and signs back in the LTN.
We've already seen posts on a number of groups suggesting or promoting further vandalism.
A word of warning to the vandals. You are being watched. Technology is cheap and the residents care about their neighbourhood.
To the two lads in the white Renault who vandalised the camera on Valley Road at 19:57 tonight. We didn't get your registration number this time (must try harder) but we are fixing the camera. Don't be silly. You are wasting your time and possibly your freedom.
On top of dramatic reductions in motor traffic within the SW LTN, many areas around the LTN also massively benefited, eg
- 4970 *fewer* daily motor vehicles at
@Dunraven_School
on Leigham Court Road
- 2633 *fewer* at
@Hitherfield15
on Leigham Vale
Another fantastic community ride at Yesterday's Tour de Streatham. Rain, Hills and lots of fun on the safe streets.
A lovely finish at the
@Rookery100
Christmas Market for mulled wine, marshmallows and local gift buying.
Until next time!
@lambeth_council
Bringing roads like Streatham Hill and Streatham High Road up to a safer 20mph standard is a huge win for those who care about road danger in the borough.
The best bit is that this will *actually be enforced* as existing speed cameras will be reprogrammed
As of today, every single road in Lambeth has a 20 mph speed limit.
Any private or commercial vehicle travelling above 20 is now doing so illegally. This will save lives and reduce road danger.
Valley Road // Gleneldon Road
26/3/2024, 8:00
Now that thousands of vehicles have been returned to these streets, how are people expected to feel safe walking and cycling?
We ask again, what is the plan for dealing with this?
@willnorman
@RezinaChowdhury
@clairekholland
Brilliant to see the improvement to congestion during the rush hour(s) on Streatham High Road and other roads around the Streatham Wells LTN.
The scheme is bedding in well and the difference within a few months is incredible.
6:25pm today.
Impossible to ride a bike in Streatham Wells. The main roads are dangerous with no cycle infrastructure, the residential roads are completely blocked with cars.
Really sad to hear that Wholemeal Cafe on Shrubbery Rd is closing its doors after 45 years. Greedy landlords yet again turning the screw on the independent businesses that make a place a place.
So excited for the protected cycle way coming to Streatham Hill later this year. Just look at what happens when the people that can switch the way they travel.
Remember what the embankment used to be like in terms of traffic. Wow.
We keep hearing that our streets will be full of crime once we’re in an LTN, and we should be careful what we wish for.
Is there any evidence to substantiate this? No, but there’s plenty to show that crime falls in LTNs.
A thread.
“Once the traffic is reduced, the road danger and noise is gone, people are free to make connections. For me, this is a massive positive effect of the LTNs, and one that I had not anticipated beforehand to that extent.”
LTNs make neighbourhoods safer, more sustainable and give everyone in

LTN 🏫
There's a whole bunch of people that don't want to see these streets safe enough for children to cycle on, and would rather see this scene back on the side streets so that traffic can 'flow' 🤷♀️
👇👇Excited to share the headlines from our survey about the planned

Welcome back to school kids!
17 April, 8:00. Traffic returning to its usual awful levels on Valley Road
How are the bus priority works going on the High Road?
This problem isn't going away. Please confirm next steps.

The braying of an angry mob is not the same as demonstrating public opinion.
People who are happy with the scheme or apathetic didn't spend their evening blaspheming in a church.
A solid response from
@RezinaChowdhury
@lambeth_council
to the residents' deputation supporting the Streatham Wells LTN last week. Looking forward to further measures to reduce car use in the borough!
Council is now hearing a deputation on the early success of the Low Traffic Neighbourhood trial in Streatham Wells in reducing road danger and improving outcomes for residents within and around the area. Watch here:
People might tell you that the Streatham Wells LTN will simply displace traffic onto other roads, increasing pollution levels and congestion on the roads around it.
Let’s take a look at why we shouldn’t accept that as a fact.
Very positive and still early days.
Many more people, especially children, able to enjoy walking, cycling and scooting on safe streets today for the return to school. ❤️
I did a scoot-around of over half Streatham Wells LTN area - inc some boundary roads - between 5.20pm-6pm today.
A snapshot is just a snapshot. So not saying this is everyone's evening experience. Traffic also heavy where it normally is on High Rd from Gracefield Gardens down.
@JohnJohnStewart
Good to acknowledge that traffic on Streatham High Road has been an issue for at least 40 years.
You know that the Streatham Wells LTN hasn't 'created' this traffic, John. It is so disingenuous to suggest that all was rosy and flowing at rush hour a month ago.
Reminder for the Tour de Wells tomorrow at 12pm!
An all-abilities, family-friendly bike/scoot/wheel/ride around Streatham Wells.
Meet at Valley Road playing field.
In 2019,
@lambeth_council
assessed each neighbourhood in the borough against 5 criteria:
- air quality
- collisions
- no. school pupils
- length of healthy routes
- evidence of rat running
Streatham Wells was the 2nd worst in the whole borough
The response = Streatham Wells LTN
Why aren’t there far more of these 'bus priority traffic lights' that hold back general traffic but automatically provide a green light for the bus? Seems like a good way to assist bus times on roads where there isn’t width for bus lanes the whole way along.
Just a reminder of this one. We posted a video of an empty boundary road earlier and it seems to have really wound a few people up.
Please do unfollow or even block us if you hate this kind of content, because I'm afraid there will be more of it.
@MrsParanandi
Concerned that people are misunderstanding what this account is. We're a campaign group. We are v pro LTN. We post positive stories.
You might prefer to follow other accounts that do the opposite
Fact: Traffic since the roadworks finished on Thurs has dramatically improved
Leigham Vale was very calm/quiet this morning, especially outside
@Hitherfield15
school where there’s often a solid line of traffic. We are benefiting from the new Streatham Wells LTN.
Along with the school street & SH LTN, 1000’s of kids now have safer & less polluted streets.
