I am honoured and humbled to be elected to lead Lambeth Labour Group.
Despite the huge challenges of the last year, we’ve seen the best of Lambeth – and now we need to use that energy and community spirit to build a recovery that works for all.
I can’t wait to get started.
First monitoring report analysing the Railton LTN has found when taking into account roads inside *and roads that bound the LTN*:
⬇️ Car traffic down by 31% across the area
⬇️ HGVs down 23% across the area
⬆️ Cycling up 32% across the area
⬆️ Cycling up 51% within LTN
🚶♀️👩🦽🛴🚲🌍
After masses of work with officers over recent weeks, today I’ve agreed
@lambeth_council
’s emergency plans to reduce road danger & enable safe social distancing🚶♀️🚲🛴...
Hugely significant: courts have vindicated our approach to our emergency transport programme.
@Lambeth_council
is determined about eliminating inequalities in our communities & I am glad to see the judgement is clear they have been central since the start
Really promising data from the independent traffic assessment of Railton LTN, part of stage 1 monitoring🚶🏼♀️👩🏼🦽🚲
Traffic across the wider area ⬇️27%
Traffic ⬇️on 3 of 4 boundary rds by between 9% & 18%
Cycling ⬆️ 74% on Shakespeare Rd & 50% on Railton Rd
We will now be fining you in
@lambeth_council
if you don't switch your engine off while stationary 🌬️
We need to protect people with respiratory issues and our children's health and development, even more so during COVID-19
@MumsForLungs
Really pleased to share the low traffic neighbourhood plans for the Oval Triangle freeing up something like 4 miles of our roads to be enjoyed by local people, rather than dominated by rat-running traffic!👇👇
@willnorman
@Heidi_LDN
@MayorofLondon
7 new LTNs; 4 new healthy routes; 100s of new cycle hangars & sheffield stands; £500,000 on new school streets; £500,000 into micromobility hubs & parklets; bus travel improvements & so much more.
Proud to see us getting cracking & delivering on our
@LambethLabour
manifesto👌🌍
For the climate 🌍 and the rising cost of living 💷 it’s time for a big shift in how we all travel. So today we’re announcing a £17.7m investment to help people do this
#LambethBigShift

I'm pleased to be able to share
@lambeth_council
's plans for a low traffic neighbourhood in the Tulse Hill area
This is the 5th LTN we have introduced in the borough as part of our emergency transport programme funded by
@MayorofLondon
's
#StreetspaceLDN
plan 🛴🚲👩🏼🦽🚶🏼♀️
I'm honoured to have been re-elected as Leader of
@LambethLabour
.
Last week, the people in Lambeth entrusted us to continue leading our wonderful borough. We will work hard everyday to repay that trust, and together we will build a fairer, more equal Lambeth for all.
#OnYourSide
Following on from our emergency strategy published three weeks ago, today I have been able to agree
@lambeth_council
's programme for the next six months. We've agreed to re-purpose c.£1.8m from our highways budget to deliver the baseline scenario🚲🚶🛴...
Excited to share that work on
@lambeth_council
's 2nd emergency LTN linking Herne Hill & Brixton starts this weekend!
🚍 3 bus gates on Railton Rd
🚶♀️Point closure on Shakespeare Rd
🛴 4 miles freed up for people to move around safely
🍸Reclaimed roadspace for businesses
Awesome stats. Huge amount of work has gone into building more equitable streets in the past 12 months. In Lambeth, our aim is to build healthy routes safe enough for a 12yo to cycle independently 🚲🚸🛴
Just a few examples of
@lambeth_council
great work over the last yr!
💥Boom💥 New data: In less than 12 months
@MayorofLondon
@tfl
&
@londoncouncils
have built 100km of new cycle lanes & hundreds of km of quieter streets. The result? Last weekend we saw a 200%+ increase in cycling (300%+ in some places). Amazing!! Build it & they will come.🚲🚲🚲
Pleased to say work on
@lambeth_council
's THIRD low traffic neighbourhood will begin on Saturday! Letters should be dropping on people's doormats today.
We need transport equity in Lambeth. We need to make our roads safer for those who do not have access to a car 🚶♀️🚲🛴👩🦽
I'm on my way to
#COP26
in Glasgow to join other council leaders in showcasing the local climate action we are already taking with our communities. In Lambeth we're serious about tackling the climate crisis and getting to net zero by 2030. And don't worry - I got the train! 🚆
When we adopted our new Transport Strategy before Christmas, I said it's time for delivering🚶♀️🚲♿️🛴
I'm really pleased to be able to share the proposals for our joint project with
@TfL
to make Rosendale Road much safer for everyone. Plans include...
I am delighted to have been unanimously re-appointed as the Leader of Lambeth Council. I hope this heralds a new, cross-party approach on this progressive, Tory-free council.
Proud to see
@lambeth_council
1st emergency low traffic neighbourhood up and running in Stockwell and Oval.
Likely to take a bit to fully bed in but great to see 6 new filters in freeing up 4 miles of our streets for residents both inside & outside to move around safely🚶♀️🚲🛴
We will make improvements to cycleway 5 to make it safer for our fantastic NHS & key worker staff
@GSTTnhs
. As restrictions are lifted we will mitigate against rat running & congestion as car use increases. More details on the specifics to follow next week…
#LondonTogether
Hugely positive news for Lambeth residents in Streatham & beyond. It will have a transformation impact for those who feel that current conditions are too unsafe.
Great to see lower speeds designed in from the start too with ⬇️ speed limits creating a safer high street 👍🚲🚶♀️🌳
We're working with
@lambeth_council
to make Streatham Hill safer for people walking and cycling, following strong public support at consultation. The permanent changes include segregated cycle lanes, new pedestrian crossings and reduced speed limits.
We will widen pavements for pedestrians at some of our busiest pinch points. We will make interventions in our neighbourhoods that reduce road danger whilst connecting our town centres with safe routes to enable social distancing & safe access to our amazing local businesses.
Work starts this week on one of
@lambeth_council
's main rd schemes on Kennington Road btwn Westminster Bridge Rd & Lambeth Rd. Along with what's pictured NB there'll also be:
- southbound protected 🚲 lane
- stripping out redundant parking southbound to introduce a 🚍 lane 👍
Awesome to see
@lambeth_council
's Railton LTN making it safer for everyone to 🚶🏼♀️👩🏼🦽🚲🛴
#StreetspaceLDN
These changes are necessary to make our streets safer so more people feel confident enough to cycle so there are fewer cars on our roads.

I've joined
@LondonLabour
Leaders in calling on the government to provide safe & legal routes for Afghan refugees.
The scenes in Afghanistan are heartbreaking. The government must work with councils to implement a national resettlement programme so we can provide sanctuary.
Great to meet with community volunteers who are preserving the national covid memorial wall here in Lambeth.
They were joined today by volunteers from Shellfield Academy in Walsall, who have given up their study leave, to come and help ❤️👍
Great to welcome a cross-party group of councillors from Liverpool and Bristol to Slough, Maidenhead and Windsor on a tour of Lambeth today.
Proud to be able to show them what real, progressive action from
@Lambeth_council
on transforming our neighbourhoods looks like 🚶♀️🚲🌍
I've applied to be Labour's candidate for Vauxhall in the next election. I'd be honoured to be chosen to represent our wonderful constituency where I've lived and campaigned for so long.
My values are Labour, my roots are Labour, my community is Vauxhall

Cycling figures:
🚲 65% increase in cycling on Railton Road
🚲 84% increase in cycling on Shakespeare Road

Second round of monitoring will be carried out in a few months
Delighted to welcome
@KwajoHousing
to the Town Hall today to talk all things housing.
Kwajo is a fantastic advocate & campaigner. It was great to discuss how we can support each other's work to make sure everyone has access to safe, warm and secure housing. 🏡
Huge congratulations to

PPC! I know you'll be amazing & I can't wait to get out campaigning for you at the next election!
Thank you so much to everyone who supported me, and to the other candidates for a good comradely campaign 💪
Following the fantastic election results for Lambeth Labour, I am delighted to announce the appointments for Lambeth’s new Cabinet.
I’m really proud that this diverse and talented team are already hard at work on delivering on the priorities of people in Lambeth 🧵 👇
Really excited to share our new Transport Strategy and implementation plan which is going to Cabinet on Monday.
We need to radically reshape our borough to clean up our toxic air, make it safer to walk and cycle and reduce emissions
Plans include...
Embarrassing behaviour. Have already made it crystal clear these temp measures will be consulted on before becoming permanent. Shouting at ppl with their kids, filming ppl outside their houses. Sad that this is done by a small minority in response to us making our streets safer.
Totally understand people have valid concerns about temporary
#LowTrafficNeighbourhood
schemes in & around
#Vauxhall
but to shout at me as I’m taking my kids to the park is not on. I will continue to pass on concerns to
@clairekholland
& ensure that there is a full consultation
Car traffic figures for boundary roads👇
⬇️Loughborough Junction end of Coldharbour Ln down 7%
⬇️ Brixton Water Lane down 66%
⬇️ Dulwich Road down 9%
⬇️ Effra Road down 21%
⬇️ Milkwood Road down 14%
⬆️ Brixton end of Coldharbour Ln up 10%
Excited to be able to share plans for the 1st phase of
@lambeth_council
's improvements to Rosendale Rd to make it safer for 🚶🏼♀️🚲🛴👩🏼🦽
4 new zebra crossings and a protected cycle track between Brockwell Park and the jct with Turney Road 👌🏼👌🏼
Starting on site next week.
I hope people aren't getting project fatigue... 🚶♀️🚲🌳🚌
The next phase of our engagement on the Brixton Liveable Neighbourhood project is live!
We want to make the areas in and around Brixton safer and healthier for everyone. To clean up our toxic air and stop rat-running...
Car traffic figures for roads within LTN:
⬇️ Shakespeare Rd down 52% & 60% (two locations)
⬇️ Railton Rd down 75%
⬇️ Hurst St down 72%
⬇️ Regent Rd down 22%
⬇️ Barnwell Rd down 24%
⬆️ Rattray Rd up 101% (additional filters now in place to reduce traffic here)
The Cut is now closed to through traffic with wider pavement and planters creating a much better streetscene (though the surface is still terrible for cycling - more pothole than speedhump on some sections)
#movefastandfixthings
This is horrendous. Whatever your views, if you are suggesting that councillors are implementing these measures in bad faith, it contributes to this sort of toxic atmosphere.
I hope you and your family are ok
@jonburkeUK
It was only a matter of time.
I hold the astroturf anti-Low Traffic Neighbourhood 'campaigners' responsible for the creation of an atmosphere in which public property is destroyed and Cllrs receive death threats for doing the job they were democratically elected to do.
.
@lambeth_council
continuing its commitment to reallocating road space for people and the environment in 🌳🌳🌱

My first visit as Leader of
@LambethLabour
has been to see the progress of 30 new affordable homes we're building on the South Lambeth Estate, including 18 council homes.
Many people in Lambeth need decent homes. We're building the homes they need - right here, right now.
Improvements to Ferndale LTN on their way. Stage 1 monitoring review showed:
⬇️ traffic down 46% within LTN overall
⬆️ cycling up 69% within LTN (inc 1676% on Pulross Road & 124% on Ferndale Rd)
But traffic ⬆️ on western end of Ferndale Rd in line with resident & cllr feedback.
First LTN is live as part of
@lambeth_council
COVID-19 programme🚶♀️🚲🛴
Planters in by the weekend 👍👍
May take a few weeks for it to settle down but safer streets, safer cycleway 5 and around 4 miles of our streets freed up for people on the way 👌
More coming soon...👀👀👀
Amazing work by
@lambeth_council
officers and our schools to get 14 school streets off the ground for the start of term, to add to the 2 permanent school streets we already have. More to come next term 🛴🚲🚶🏼♀️🛴
Safer streets for all 👌🏼
Over the coming months, we are going to redouble our efforts to involve all of Lambeth in a conversation about how we can reshape our streets & neighbourhoods together, so they bring communities together, are safer, healthier & for people 🚶♀️🛴👩🦽🚲
Proud to be part of

Over 60% of Tulse Hill households don't have access to a car. Therefore as coronavirus persists it's vital that we provide safe, affordable and accessible transport options for everyone in our borough.
Letters are in the post to residents with work set to begin by 28 Sept 👍🏼👍🏼
🚶♀️ 11 new zebra crossings
🚲segregated cycle track right up to Brockwell Pk
🌳35 new trees

Completely irresponsible from One Oval spreading fear through misinformation. You might not like emergency LTN but at least discuss it honestly.
I wonder why they didn't release the full email exchange to

? Maybe because the emergency services signed them off? 🤦🏼♀️👇🏼
Despite a really difficult financial outlook & govt reneging on their pledge I'm proud
@LambethLabour
cabinet tonight agreed
@lambeth_council
's capital investment plan for next five years. It includes around £90m in measures aimed at tackling the climate crisis 🌍🌱...
Incredible work by Traffic officers tackling
#speeding
. Last week we enforced 2,020 speeding offences across
#London
. By comparison it was 268 in same week in 2019. An 8 fold increase!
We are there 24/7 enforcing offences. Please drive lawfully, stay safe & keep a clean licence.
3 Low Traffic Neighbourhoods to be delivered in the next 3 years, with at least one more within the Brixton Liveable Neighbourhood project.
Our roads are dominated by rat-running, mostly by those who don't live in Lambeth. Our streets need to be safer and more enjoyable for all
More timed road closures agreed to enable Lambeth's hospitality sector to use outdoor space as restrictions ease ☀️🍸

Toxic air kills thousands of Londoners yearly & hugely impacts the health of children & young people & older residents. Climate justice & health equity are priorities in Lambeth, so this decision from

@LGAcomms

Councils like Lambeth are already taking climate action with our communities locally. The government can't meet their net zero ambitions without us - give councils the funding and powers we need.
The cost of living crisis is impacting families everywhere. That's why I'm glad
@SadiqKhan
will provide free school meals for primary school pupils next year.

Huge achievement by our Labour
@MayorofLondon
. During 2016, air on Brixton Road exceeded the hourly legal limit for toxic pollution for 538 hours. Last year, this fell to 0. There have also been no breaches of legal limits in 2020 either 🌿💨
NEW: Data released today shows huge reductions in air pollution in parts of London where
@MayorofLondon
has taken action, including Brixton Road and Putney High Street.
The judgment is also testament to
@lambeth_council
’s fantastic officers that, after poring over all their work, evidence and the facts, & despite being asked to work under huge pressure in the middle of a pandemic, it has been seen that they have done so with care & attention.
Delighted to have been shortlisted for the selection to be
@VauxhallLabour
candidate at the next election!
Vauxhall needs a pro-European Labour MP it can be proud of. Help me take my campaigns of climate & social justice to parliament. Get in touch if you'd like to help! 🏳️🌈🇪🇺💪
Six low traffic neighbourhoods, Q5, Baylis Road, Rosendale Road, Kennington Road, Windmill Drive, 20 school streets. An incredible amount of work by
@lambeth_council
to begin to make our streets work for people.
Using this funding, the programme sets out where and when, by August, we will deliver:
🏡4 low traffic neighbourhoods
🚲3 healthy routes incl. protected cycle lanes
🛴3 access-only roads
🚶♀️6 more locations for pavement widening
However, our plan goes much further...
Prep work looking good for the first of many emergency LTNs that will be going in across Lambeth!
We need to enable people to move around our borough safely as restrictions ease as well as freeing up our roads and public transport for those who absolutely need it... 🚶♀️🛴🚲
Good to hear the positive feedback 👍🏼 we are monitoring closely and will continue working with residents and businesses to make the changes work even better.
Two thirds of people are too scared to cycle & many of us find walking by traffic unpleasant.
In just one week, it's got so much better! ❤️
