We just released a Climate Action Roadmap for the 33rd!🌱
Our goal is to drive down emissions using every tool the
@NYCCouncil
has: pass legislation, fund initiatives, provide rigorous oversight & organize winning campaigns.
Read about it in
@Gothamist
:
There is zero evidence that conducting subway bag checks advances public safety.
Instead of wastefully deploying 750 national guard troops, I wish the Governor did something helpful - like fund 750 safe haven shelter beds to move homeless people from the subways into housing.
New: Gov. Hochul announces that she is deploying 750 National Guard members into the NYC subways to conduct bag checks, in addition to another 250 law enforcement members. She is also proposing a bill to ban people convicted of a violent crime on the subway from public transit
Despite days of warnings that smoke from Canada wildfires would make its way here to NYC, the City issued limited public statements or guidance yesterday. 🧵
Over 7,000 New Yorkers signed the petition to Make McGuinness Safe - overwhelmingly residents of Greenpoint.
If you were actually committed to street safety, you would show it.
Add to the list of electeds
@NYCMayor
very publicly dislikes:
@LincolnRestler
. Asked about the reversal on the McGuinness redesign, the mayor asks who the councilmember is — an answer he likely knew.
Today, I introduced a Resolution to bring the Idaho Stop to NYC!
This would allow bikers to treat red lights as stop signs making cycling safer and bringing us one step closer to Vision Zero!
I just formally introduced our placard legislation in the
@NYCCouncil
!
Anyone who visits Downtown Brooklyn knows that placard abuse is rampant: the personal cars of government officials block sidewalks & bike lanes all day long.
It’s unsafe, it’s corrupt, and it needs to stop.
I am angry & heartbroken by two more anti-Semitic, violent incidents in our community over Shabbos.
A man was violently struck upside the head in Bed Stuy by Marcy & Myrtle. Swastikas & other graffiti were spray painted on yeshiva school bus in Williamsburg by Division & Rodney.
Our office introduced a bill to ban non-essential helicopter flights. This isn't just a quality of life issue - it's about climate justice. 1 helicopter idling is the equivalent of 40 cars!
I pushed EDC for the elimination of these flights that are disrupting our communities.
Proud to be the lead sponsor on this legislation to finally get illegal, reckless parking under control.
This bill will make our streets and sidewalks demonstrably safer for pedestrians and cyclists.
NYPD has refused to enforce, so it’s time to empower New Yorkers!
Well, this is interesting:
In NYC, a new bill would invite residents to submit photos of cars blocking bike lanes, schools, and sidewalks -- and then receive 25% of each $175 ticket.
No one should be outside tonight. Mayor should immediately call for “Code Red” conditions to allow everyone at risk to access shelter immediately.
DHS should conduct expanded outreach to everyone to help all street homeless New Yorkers get inside.
🚁There are approx 4,000 non-essential helicopter flights over NYC monthly by Uber, Blade & tourism companies.
It’s disruptive to our communities & bad for our environment.
That’s why we’re introducing a bill to ban non-essential helicopter flights.
This is what leadership looks like. When NYPD penned in our completely peaceful protest on Washington Ave,
@JumaaneWilliams
&
@bradlander
put their bodies in front and intervened to avert police violence and keep the peace. Thank you.
Today we intro’d a bill to hold NYPD officers accountable if they engage in evidentiary misconduct (i.e. give false testimony, withhold evidence, intimidate witnesses).
Currently, there’s no systematic mechanism to investigate or address evidentiary misconduct.
This must change
Poor air quality is a major health threat with lasting consequences and we need to respond accordingly.
Here is what the City should be doing immediately:
Horse drawn carriages are a thing of the past, and it's time to leave them there once and for all.
Today, I signed onto Intro. 573 to ban horse drawn carriages in NYC & replace them with electrical carriages.
🚗 NEW: We’re introducing 2 bills to end placard abuse
For too long, our City has allowed tens of thousands of city, state & federal employees to abuse their placards every damn day. It’s petty corruption & it’s wrong.

@StreetsblogNYC

Pour one out for Regal Cinemas / United Artists Court Street 12. The moving van has arrived. Today’s screenings will be the last.
It was a good 20+ year run since they opened back when I was in HS.
For the shouting back at action movie experience - there was no place better!
Today, I introduced legislation to strengthen penalties for Alternate Side Parking violations.
It would increase fines over a 12 month period:
1st violation ➡️ $65 fee
2nd & 3rd violation ➡️ $100 fee
4th violation ➡️ vehicle towed
It has been one of a heck of a ride and today on the steps of City Hall - I took the oath of office to make it official!!!
I am so freaking excited for the work ahead. Thank you to everyone who has given me the opportunity to serve the community I love.
NYC is the greatest city on earth.
All City government workers should be required to reside in New York City - from agency heads to rank and file staff.
NYPD Commissioner Keechant Sewell opposes residency requirement for cops, at
@CrainsNewYork
. Says officers have investment in the neighborhoods where they *work* and that’s enough for her. Confirms that she herself lives in Nassau County, “like six or seven blocks in.”
While the Election Day results were good, we wanted to be careful not to get ahead of ourselves.
Now, with all the in-person votes counted and a preliminary Ranked Choice Voting tally completed, we can say with certainty:
WE WON! 🎉
I support year round outdoor dining.
We can and must improve regulations of outdoor dining to mitigate noise, sanitation and flooding issues, but we should maintain a year round program that has been a boon to restaurants and the dynamism of our streets.
NEW: Restaurateurs, advocates beg Council to keep all-year roadside dining.
"If we have to take it down in the winter, there’s no putting that stuff back up," one restaurant owner told me. "I think that’s just a way for them to get rid of it."
@DavidZipper
Proud to be the lead sponsor on this legislation to finally get illegal, reckless parking under control.
This bill will make our streets and sidewalks demonstrably safer for pedestrians and cyclists.
NYPD has refused to enforce, so it’s time to empower New Yorkers!
It started with the Mayor closing libraries on Sundays - now he is talking about ending weekend hours entirely.
The Mayor cannot continue to slash budgets and eliminate services that working families depend on.
This Mayor rightly cautions us that not everyone lives on Twitter and yet the most consequential action his administration took on the first day of this emergency was a tweet. That’s not getting stuff done, it’s watching stuff happen.
Hey G Train lovers! Trains are coming more frequently!
🟢 July 2023: Weekend Service arrives every 8-9 minutes instead of every 10-11 minutes
🟢 December 2023: Midday Service will arrive every 8 minutes
This is thanks to $35M for enhanced
@mta
service in NYS Budget.
@CMAriKagan47
Didn’t this deadly tragedy just happen in your district, Ari? These are avoidable deaths.
We need elected officials with the will to keep our communities safe.
🚲📣 Bike Lane Bill Passed! 🚲📣
Our bill streamlines the community notification process about new bike lanes. Now,
@NYC_DOT
can expedite installation of new bike lanes throughout NYC, so we can achieve the network of safe, protected bike lanes that riders deserve!
This is happening in our City by the Roosevelt Hotel.
The squalor, inhumane conditions, & degradation of hundreds of men fenced in on top of one another.
These men came to NYC from Venezuela, Chad & other countries because it’s a beacon & a sanctuary, but we’re failing them. 🧵
NEW: Schermerhorn is getting a redesign.
🚲 2-way protected bicycle lane on Schermerhorn between Boerum Pl & 3rd Ave
🚗 1-way conversion for vehicles b/w Smith St & 3rd Ave
🚶♀️ Pedestrian improvements
✅ Moving the standard bicycle lane b/w Boerum Pl & Clinton St to south side
Our streets aren’t getting cleaned because it’s cheaper to pay an occasional ASP ticket than for a spot in a garage.
By failing to move our cars, our streets are getting dirtier & rats are infesting our neighborhoods.
Check out our bill to fix this ⬇️
🍦🔋We introduced legislation mandating that ice cream trucks switch from fossil-fuel powered generators to electric or solar-powered generators for food equipment.
Why? Because the generators expose New Yorkers to poor air quality + unsafe noise levels.
Had been thinking about hosting an event at
@ThreesBrewing
, which has two spots in our district that I have loved in Gowanus and Greenpoint.
After this comment from one of their co-owners, I am going to pick a different spot.
If Mayor Adams cared about helping families enroll in 3K and PreK, he would invest in it.
Instead - he has decimated the outreach program and cut over $1B from early childhood education.
Eric Adams says the 3K system was "so screwed up it boggles your mind" and the city needs to match seats with kids.
Nearly two years in, he says: "We should have been knocking on doors saying your baby needs to be in 3K." (Yes, that's what advocates say he's not doing.)
We just approved a rezoning in Boerum Hill with 450 units of housing, 50% of which will be truly affordable!
This rezoning can serve as a model for how we partner with our communities and build the housing we need and deserve.
After experiencing mild symptoms, I got a COVID test today & it came back positive.
We ended petitioning Sunday after reaching our goal to avoid putting our volunteers & neighbors at further risk, but I've contacted folks I saw over last few days & want to let everyone know.
My colleague in the City Council is comparing the attempted extermination of the Jewish people and many other persecuted groups to a vaccine that will save lives.
This is not okay.
Atlantic Avenue is the heart of Boerum Hill - but it’s also one of Brooklyn’s most dangerous roadways.
New mid-block crossings are going to make Atlantic a whole lot safer!
DOT is installing new mid-block crossings between Nevins & Bond, Bond & Hoyt, and Hoyt & Smith.
"Out of the 100 largest US metropolitan statistical areas, New York City led the pack with 97% growth in bike trips from 2019 to 2022, reflecting a lasting shift towards cycling by commuters who previously relied on subways" via
@citylab
Severe weather is more frequent due to climate change & we need to be prepared.
City Hall should have been proactive & used the Mayor’s bully pulpit to warn NYers.
We should have had remote school, limited travel & more resources to clear catch basins & protect basements.
The Rent Guidelines Board is trying to pull the rug out from working class New Yorkers by recommending rent increases as high as 9% over 2 years.
RBG can’t pretend like they are addressing the affordability crisis while forcing New Yorkers out of their homes.
A tragedy occurred in our community this afternoon. A pedestrian fatality involving a private sanitation truck at Atlantic & Flatbush.
This is one of most dangerous intersections in NYC. We've brought it up repeatedly with DOT & we need action now. Traffic deaths are avoidable.
We are 36 hours into an air quality emergency & other than a late night suspension of outdoor DOE activities, our city government has not taken a single proactive step to protect New Yorkers.
As a member of the Jewish Caucus - I have absolutely no idea what he could be referencing. 80% of the Jewish Caucus voted for the bill.
The How Many Stops Act will bring much needed oversight & accountability to NYPD and I am eager to help overturn his impending veto.
At a Queens Bar Mitzvah, Adams told guests they needed to "rally with the Jewish Caucus" against the How Many Stops Act, that "must not be able to become a law,"
@SallyGold
scoops.
It's just part of his lobbying effort against two law enforcement bills:
This is not normal.
In Adams administration - Transportation experts & engineers are ignored & street safety decisions are determined based purely on politics.
Projects that would save lives are gutted because the Mayor is concerned about losing donors.
We should shutter this helipad. Our climate crisis necessitates that we eliminate nonessential helicopter travel that causes noise & pollution across our city.
Whether providing flights for the uber-elite to get to the Hamptons or tourist travel, it has no business in NYC.
NEW: An aviation company with ties to a board member at NYC's economic development agency is set to receive a lucrative contract to operate the agency’s downtown Manhattan helicopter pad, raising concerns about a potential conflict of interest.
Last week - Adams admin/DOT presented proposals to our community that they said were 2-lanes of traffic on BQE.
Now they are saying 3 lanes. This would add 6M more cars & trucks in our community every year.
The climate crisis is upon us & we cannot accept this.
Today, due to Mayor’s latest draconian budget cuts - schools are forced to cut $1B midyear & thousands 3K & pre-k spots are gone.
Libraries end Sunday hours next month. Parks, CUNY, housing - all cut.
Revenue is up, reserves are steady, & Mayor keeps making deeply harmful cuts.
🚨from the PC: Budget Cuts Will Worsen City’s Affordability Crisis, Delay Economic Recovery & Harm New Yorkers
“As more New Yorkers struggle to afford skyrocketing rents, childcare & healthcare,
@nycmayor
is recklessly slashing the City programs New Yorkers rely on most.”
It’s outrageous that DHS has not issued a Code Red alert.
We have clear practices that allow all street homeless individuals to go to any shelter in NYC during public health emergencies like extreme temperatures. That should include hazardous air quality.
Since Mayor Adams took office;
Summons ⬆️
Arrests ⬆️
Incarceration at Rikers ⬆️
Kids in Jail ⬆️
We need to swiftly reverse mass incarceration trends in NYC.
Some stunning new stats from
@suhbhat
. Under Eric Adams quality of life enforcement:
Criminal summonses for public drinking up 6x. Public urination 4x. Violating park rules 4x. Littering 3x. Excessive noise 2x.
90% went to Black or Hispanic NYers
Overgrown shrubs along Brooklyn Greenway on Kent Ave have finally been cut!
@NYC_DOT
coming back tomorrow to finish job. TY to DOT workers for helping maintain safety on this heavily used bike path.
More good BK Greenway news - 26 new trees being planted for shade next month!
.
@NYCCouncil
just passed a resolution calling on Mayor & Chancellor to immediately & fully fund our schools.
1st day of school is Thursday. Our students don’t have months to wait for smaller class sizes or music & art programs.
The Mayor can fix this today. He needs to act now.
It’s official: we won! 🥳
So damn grateful to everyone who made calls, knocked doors, and believed in this campaign. I can’t wait to get to City Hall and keep serving the community that’s been my home my entire life.
THANK YOU!
I am super excited to co-chair the Council's Progressive Caucus with my friend & neighbor
@ShahanaFromBK
.
The crises of climate, housing and racial justice demand action now.
Our progressive caucus is going to bring bold ideas and concrete plans to deliver results for NYers.
This is the take of a white person who doesn’t have to worry for the safety of his family when they are pulled over by police.
I’m relieved
@dr_yusefsalaam
& his family are okay.
On Tuesday, we’ll be voting to override Mayor’s veto to ensure greater oversight of all NYPD stops.
This is damning: an elected official with illegal tints and out-of-state plates, not legally registered, using his official title to evade the law. Worse yet, he lied about the exchange until NYPD set the record straight. CM Salaam should resign as Public Safety Chair.
A budget is a moral document.
This budget doesn’t deliver what NYers need & fails to make strategic investments to rise to our current challenges.
I appreciate the Council’s hard work to stop some cuts but, after much consideration I could not vote for this vision for our city.
People often ask me how I get to so many places - the answer is
@CitiBikeNYC
!
3,786 miles. 636 hrs. 2500 trips. That is like biking from Brooklyn to Juneau, Alaska!
I'm keen to help improve Citibike & expand it to more nabes, but bike share has transformed transit in NYC!
NYC is facing an affordable housing crisis.
@NYCPlanning
’s City of Yes for Housing Opportunity is a bold approach to create the affordable housing we urgently need.
I submitted public comments supporting the proposal, especially the removal of mandatory parking requirements.
As a
@NYCCouncil
Member, my job is to address the issues raised by my constituents.
Last week, we introduced legislation regulating harmful air & noise pollution from ice cream trucks. And we are also working on bills to improve shelters & protect NYers from wildfire smoke.
Air quality in NYC is much better today and expected to continue to improve over the weekend.
But the reality is that this won’t be the last time NYC faces wildfire smoke pollution — we need real plans in place to protect New Yorkers.
We need to close every illegal dark store in NYC!
These new VC backed 15 min delivery entities are operating at a loss to drive out our beloved bodegas!
They are:
- existential threat to local businesses
- warehouse our storefronts
- mistreat their workers
- terrible neighbors
Bodegas, si! Dark stores, no!
We can’t allow bodegas to be displaced by 15-min delivery warehouses that undermine diverse local entrepreneurship, weaken nbhd ties, put workers & pedestrians at risk & turn their back on our communities.
Thx
@GaleBrewerNYC
for inviting me today.
We need a full accounting and oversight hearing on why the City failed to respond to these conditions in a timely manner to ensure we aren’t caught unprepared again.
The Mayor’s budget cuts nearly $1B in funding for 3-K. DOE has repeatedly said there is no demand for 3-K, but even with limited outreach to families, they are failing to provide a seat for every 3-year-old who applied.
Here are some of the stories we’ve heard from BK families:
🔁🔁🔁 I reintroduced our bill to strengthen penalties for Alternate Side Parking violations. It would increase fines over a 12 month period:
1st violation ➡️ $65 fee
2nd & 3rd ➡️ $100 fee
4th ➡️ vehicle towed
I chatted about it last year with
@RogerClark41
⬇️
Intro 501, which would allow the public to report dangerously parked cars obstructing bus and bike lanes, crosswalks, fire hydrants, or sidewalks and get 25% of the ticket money now has 26 co-sponsors, a majority of the City Council.
It’s the government’s job to lead in a crisis; the public should not be asked to come up with their own solutions. The Mayor’s hastily arranged press conference this AM seemed more focused on defending his lack of response rather than taking immediate action to help New Yorkers.
Happy thanksgiving from me and the Beard! Feeling a lot of love for community today!
Thank you to
@JHarden13
for helping dish out 400 warm meals to Greenpoint neighbors with
@nbrooklynangels
!
NONE of this is affordable:
❌ 35 studios at $2370
❌ 65 one bedrooms at $2542
❌ 25 two bedrooms at $3063
❌ 2 three bedrooms at $3530
On the Council, I’ll push to eliminate 130% area median income category of unaffordable housing, so we can build truly affordable homes we need
Eliminating non-essential helicopter travel at NYC helipads would benefit our communities, our environment, and our quality of life. Read about our bill to ban gas guzzling helicopters in NYC ⬇️
I'm devastated that a dump truck hit a cyclist at Adams & Tillary in Downtown BK this afternoon.
Cyclist is in critical condition. My heart is with their fam & friends.
It’s a tragic & urgent reminder that we must act to make cycling safer in NYC w/ protected network of lanes.
Instead of moving our City forward, this Mayor appears focused on undoing the progress of the de Blasio administration.
We need to be pushing aggressively to expand groundbreaking programs like IDNYC and 3K & PreK for All, rather than defunding & rolling them back…
Today, the City Council received an austerity budget modification from Mayor Adams.
Despite revenue being up, he insists on cutting essential funding from our libraries, neighborhood schools, CUNY, supportive housing & more.
This is unacceptable. Joined colleagues to push back.
Today we celebrated Schermerhorn’s new protected bike lane!
Schermerhorn St had been the worst bike lane in BK for years. Now, we finally have the two way protected bike lane that our community has demanded & that will allow NYers to cycle Downtown BK safely & efficiently.
Keeping the BQE to 2 lanes is key to limiting the negative impacts on air quality, noise, vibrations & emissions our neighborhoods deal with daily.
Elected officials along the BQE corridor are unified & we’ve sent a letter to
@SecretaryPete
requesting support for this proposal.
88,830 apartments kept vacant by greedy landlords.
That’s enough to house everyone in the shelter system and every newly arrived asylum seeker.
We need social control of housing now.
This week, I completed the
@NYCBikeLanes
Schermerhorn bike lane challenge. It took me 41 minutes and 4 seconds to bike the five block stretch between 3rd Ave and Smith Street, and
@BrooklynPaper
covered my journey.
The abuse of placards by City Officials is not just petty corruption -- it undermines safety and quality of life in our neighborhoods.
This report highlights the need for our legislation to revoke placards and end placard abuse once and for all.
There are more cops in NYC schools (5100) than total # police officers in all but three US cities (LA, Chicago, Philly). Reinvest $332M spent on cops and metal detectors in counselors, social workers, & teachers.

Congestion pricing will benefit our neighborhoods, our environment, and our mass transit system.
I'm excited that the Biden admin has approved NYC's plan -- now it's time to implement as soon as possible without exemptions.
MTA is planning to reopen the Clark St. Station tomorrow night!
Check out the brand new elevators & please support the struggling small businesses at the station.
The July 4th fireworks are for the people. Public viewing spots should never be roped off for the friends and family of the NYPD.
This is an abuse of power that needs to be investigated. It’s totally unacceptable.
On either side of the East River on Monday night, the NYPD held private fireworks viewing parties for friends and family — even as members of the public were turned away from the same parks for a lack of space.
Holy hell, it actually happened: California just eliminated minimum parking requirements for new housing projects within a half mile of public transit stops *statewide*!
A truly incredible day for housing and climate policy in the world's 5th largest economy!
The biking conditions in our City are tragically unsafe. There have been 22 fatalities in NYC in the first 8 months of the year.
We are pushing for a network of protected bike lanes across our district and beyond.
In 2013, 12 year-old Samuel Cohen Eckstein was tragically killed by a reckless driver.
Today, a majority of the City Council signed a letter to NYS Assembly leadership to pass Sammy’s Law to empower the City Council to lower speed limits in NYC.
‼️MISSING YOUNG PERSON‼️

Two of my favorite spots are closing after a decade plus:

in Boerum Hill. So many great meals and memories.
We have allowed landlords and bankers to protect their profits at the expense of our neighborhoods.
It ain’t right.
The new Supervised Injection Facilities in Northern Manhattan have already saved 100+ lives.
Credit to relentless activists, like
@VOCALNewYork

Now, let’s bring this evidence based, life saving model to Brooklyn!
No special interest should ever have more influence than our community.
Greenpointers are rightly demanding comprehensive street safety improvements on McGuinness - come show your support tonight at 6pm @ 203 Meserole Ave.
Today’s vote brings NYC one step closer to implementing congestion pricing!
The benefits of congestion pricing are clear - improved air quality, curtailing local car & truck traffic, and, most importantly, sustainably improving our mass transit.
I couldn’t be happier / prouder / more excited for my dear friend and brother
@ReynosoBrooklyn
for taking Borough Hall.
Antonio is all smarts, integrity, and fearlessness. It’s a really freaking great day for Brooklyn!
"Think about this, you don't just walk into a council person's office ... You don't walk into your doctor's office, there's a process to meet with them,"
@NYCMayor
says on Pix11 of the new online form his admin wants other electeds to complete to meet with agency heads.
While NJ Transit raids turnpike funds to stay afloat, we're fighting to protect the heart of NYC - our mass transit system.
NJ needs to take a seat & take notes: congestion pricing will play a critical role in protecting our climate & streets. Do better.
