Hey, every time you find yourself tweeting “apply even if you don’t fit all the criteria”, do me a favor and go yell at whoever writes your job ads instead. Instead of telling underrepresented people to Lean In, make your ads shorter and more welcoming.
@NeolithicSheep
Silicone, apparently! Those are called pad printing machines, and a lot of manufacturers have extremely satisfying Youtube videos one can look at.
@lingerie_addict
One of my favorite Swedish folk embroidery facts is that Blekingesöm, nowadays traditionally worked in pastel pinks and blue, used to be all bright reds and dark blue. But people copied patterns from old, sun-faded textiles - and so the style changed!
Hey, les gauchos français•es valides, prenez note : si y’a pu d’AAH mais que y’a un suicide assisté facile d’accès, à votre avis, ça finira comment ?
Le Canada nous le montre. Évitons de nous faire avoir.
The proposed Canada Disability Benefit is so far below the poverty line, disabled people are planning to ‘choose’ MAID (assisted suicide) because they have no choice.
This is their government’s intent. It’s eugenics.
This is why they’re trying to legalise it in the UK.
Hot take: the industry-wide shift to low-level graphics API is a disaster for newcomers to graphics programming.
Imagine learning the core concepts AND Vulkan bullshit all at once? No thank you
“Worse graphics” and it’s all incredibly labor-intensive 2D games. Be serious, I know us tech-heads have confused you into thinking “graphics” always means “complicated shader math” but no
A sample list of “bad programmers”:
- you on a bad day
- you while tired
- you six months ago
- you focusing on some other aspect than safety
- you, generally
- yeah that noob over there too I guess but mostly, you
Hello
#IAmNonBinary
!
I’m an agender handweaver and games programmer, making queer textiles and working on a textile farming game.
You can find the fluffy stuff over at
@fibraquarelle
🐏✨🏳️🌈
I’ve got fancy stuff, and more affordable badges. Because tradition can be queer, too.
CD Projekt is hashtag-canceled. This is an excerpt from a French interview where they spin textbook union-busting horseshit.
Complete with “unions are for low-pay workers, we’re highly qualified” as higlighted by Pierrec in the next tweet.
@eevasilin
What I knew was the culture of mutual surveillance / snitching, the little-publicized obsession with self-defense, the cruelty of banks to non-mega-rich users, polls for everything and anything in a bad way.
This is a MAJOR problem for me - game engine makers and Apple, you’re extremely guilty.
Video is a bad medium for code. It is hard to search. It inherently has accessibility issues, from captioning to duration to attention to sensory issues.
I've commented on this before but it bears repeating. More and more, text-based tutorials are being replaced with video. Rarely are these videos actually

I’d appreciate it if trans discourse could stop framing trans healthcare as the only field where people know exactly what they need and want and struggle to get it done
(Mostly thinking of chronic pain, ADHD, gyn healthcare here but I’m sure there’s plenty more)
the utter disbelief in the faces of people when i tell them that, when you get social security in switzerland, YOU OWE EVERY PENNY YOU EVER RECEIVE! after having been on social security for the last 12 years, i owe over 230k $ to the swiss state, with all the consequences that
Getting real tired of this rhetorical move from supposed “trans allies” where an attack on trans people via a transmasc teenager becomes an attack on “women and girls”, “cis” left unsaid, assigned gender sticking like fresh asphalt
@lingerie_addict
Naively (being a dyer and handweaver but notably not a sewist) I assumed they’d adjust the pattern accordingly, but I guess this makes sense
Clowns in the replies saying “they don’t want to eliminate you though”. Please do the math for me between “healthcare bans based in the below” and “death before detransition” memes, thanks
terfs every second day of the week: our poor little girls are being transed! their bodies are being ruined! we need to fix them with conversion therapy!
very serious trans activists who know everything about everyone better than anyone: terfs don't target trans men directly
Bon par contre les jeunes geeks en colère contre la loi immigration : viendez vous engager dans les assos d’aide juridique, on est noyé•e•s sous les problèmes administratifs à la con (merci la dématérialisation) et vos compétences seront TRÈS utiles. Promis.
This bullshit from grifters trying to make a quick buck is going to murder an entire ecosystem of creative coding in addition to the planet and it is so, so not okay.
My contribution to today’s games programming discourse will be that it is, actually, quite fine to want to work exclusively on software that doesn’t kill people when it fucks up
@AllanSchumacher
@JayHulmePoet
Yep, it’s a huge angle! Autistic (and otherwise neurodivergent and mentally ill) kids, especially AFAB ones, are assumed to be easily manipulated by The Trans AgendaTM.
If you look at the preview, it’s mixing neurodiversity self-acceptance with “you’re not REALLY trans”. Nasty.
I’m looking for freelance game programming work! Ideally remote, or in Stockholm.
Expertise: graphics, porting (mobile & Mac), UI, performance, C/C++
Portfolio and stuff: (EN/FR)
Contact: on here or contact
@lia
-sae.net
Let me help you make stuff faster :D
@EST_EricSTaylor
Worth nothing they’re ALSO condescending to a large number of non-binary people (notably the ones that are perceived as too masc-aligned which notably means those they clock as AMAB). Those are basically Consent To Constant Misgendering events
It’s been at least a couple years since The Bad DirectX man got roasted by all of gamedev Twitter, so let’s review the basics, shall we?
Jon, I respect you and working on The Witness was a delight, but this is a bad take because you’re misreading what those articles say.
Being a minority in games is so much invisible extra work. The smaller your community, whether it's heritage or race or location or gender or sexuality or language or disability or anything else, the more work you end up doing to create the safety & community & support networks.
Hi, engineer here: fuck you, fuck this headline, fuck CDPR, and fuck your software stability because our brains don’t exactly work well under those conditions.
QA will also have it worse because unlike us they’re generally on unstable contracts with shit pay.
This this this. Coding isn’t “hard”, as in: you, yes YOU, can learn it, I swear. But it’s not easy, you’ll get stuck, programmers are jerks, StackOverflow culture is the worst, and computers were a mistake.
To young women especially: don't let people (usually not programmers by trade) "encourage" you by telling you "coding isn't hard". When it feels hard that's because it is, and you will never feel complete mastery or know all the answers, as there's always something to learn.
People: Yay those massive crowds at Trans Pride makes me feel less alone!
Me: Since all of them are maskless they’re mostly reminding me that I can’t trust my own community or find that oh-so-vital peer support but good for you!
Hi
#IAmNonbinary
!
I’m a French-Swedish handweaver and programmer based in Stockholm. I prefer to call myself queer, otherwise a mix of agender / ace / pan. A mess, really.
The weaving you’ll find at
@fibraquarelle
, I’ve got a bunch of pretty Pride things you can get ✨
Here’s a secret of the Games Industry: Recruiters often post senior roles because it opens up the funnel to the most candidates. Mid levels will apply to senior roles but seniors won’t apply to mid level roles.
You don’t have to actually be senior. Just apply anyway.
Gamedev in a nutshell but I especially love the “This caused all sorts of problems. Why did we do it? No clue. Anyway-“ pattern which is SO PAINFULLY FAMILIAR
See the issue with that cart ride is that it's not just a cart on rails. That cart is physically simulated. Why you ask? Good question.
So anyways, this meant that all kinds of things would cause the cart to start to freak out and fly off the road.
1) Vaccines work, get one if you can.
2) Delta is a bastard.
3) You can’t relax just yet, you need to keep masking up especially indoors, you need to keep limiting travel.
4) Ventilation is still critical.
5) Be and stay angry at how hard our institutions failed us.
Again as Pierrec pointed out, they say the darkness in the world will come from the people, and...
... isn’t cyberpunk about exactly the opposite? Systems, not villains?
For the record, all of these can be true at once:
- Absurd US salaries can be low compared to what the market is supposed to pay;
- Such salaries coming to Europe would be harmful;
- Such salaries would be less normal if the US had an actual safety net.
Alright?
@reluctantlyjoe
To me it’s anger talking. Thing is, those of us who can’t afford to risk covid also found indoor events pleasurable, we’ve been mostly cutoff from them since masks came off, so staying polite while deep in social death is… tricky. We need a middle ground and it’s gone
Omygosh I got my town’s culture grant. It’s not huge and it’s not the highest profile thing but. It still means so much.
And my pitch was weaving blankets with yarn from the nearby farm so this will be AWESOME.
“Why is physics so fast and UI so slow”
I don’t know, bellend, maybe because one is an embarrassingly parallel problem with lots of math and the other is all spaghetti, data accesses, custom code, string manip and contempt from Optimization Experts?
Also indies often crunch worse than in AAA, except it’s blanketed in silence because it’s not workplace abuse if you love the work, the boss is your buddy, the office is a fun apartment and there’s no HR department, right?
Bonus if freelance of the “what’s a contract” type
(Today’s edition is yet another Nordics Great At Feminism bullshit tweet with a local researcher going “It’s a lot more complicated than that and you’re rewriting history based on current-day data” in the replies)
"There are 220,000 or so people employed in the US video game business. They make about $100,000 on average, maybe more. It's hard to imagine what would motivate that crew to unionize"
Strauss Zelnick talks unions, release planning, next-gen, E3 and more
This is an unkind headline to a vital piece.
Activision friends, please hold your marketing department accountable, this is somehow even less okay than your usual crap, and I’m saying this as an ex-Battlefield dev.
A very interesting and vital thread overall, and this bit in particular is going to affect how I read interviews of orgs that have trans-inclusive language but then seem to slip up.
For example, if I say "people with breasts" when I'm discussing bras, don't replace that with "women." I said what I meant to say. You've misquoted me, and now the intentionality of my words has been lost.
LRT: Fully agreed.
I don’t think US people actually realize how crushing the weight of their culture is. Even when it’s “designed for export” instead of “grassroots”.
Your language, references, values, history, aesthetic, food? They become OUR norm.
And it was done on purpose.
Anglophones, I say this with love, but: please triple-check your info about non-English-speaking countries.
E.g. I’ve seen this claim of a French rollback several times now and that’s… just not a thing that’s happened.
Okay, here goes. I’m looking for work!
Senior game engine plumber, primarily C++ / UI / graphics / porting / tooling / tech doc weirdo but will adapt to anything quickly, legacy cursed tech especially.
Remote ideal, hybrid around Lille possible, part-time very important.
@NeolithicSheep
I’m still pissed that my classes had extensive coverage of the biological mechanisms of HIV but none of the historical and social aspects. We were told it was now a 10-year countdown - early 2000s classes - but never who it had killed most.
So, some people in the replies say “depression”, but as someone who experienced this A Lot before this, I’d argue it’s more specific.
A mini-thread on Some Falsehoods Programmers* Believe About Burnout I guess?
*and others
anyone else have this thing during COVID-19 where, no reason, they just feel like total shit on random days? best I can describe it is the equivalent of a hangover that lasts all day, even though I do not have a hangover. I'm sure it's just stress and lack of sleep, but bleh.
I remain convinced that Khronos should have specced a 3-tier API.
- Something akin to immediate mode GL;
- Something akin to modern GL / Metal;
- Hardcore mode Vulkan.
Not relied on open source devs. SPECCED IT and paid people.
I get why it’s all US stuff all the time but god it’s exhausting when you, well, don’t live there and aren’t from there and have so much local and/or homeland terror to process already
Weekly reminder to the Big Trans Accounts to pay a microsecond of attention to whose backs the healthcare bans are happening on before spinning some shitty yarn about how “transphobes ignore the existence of trans men”
(The thread also includes a rather spurious theory that European women did not organize earlier due to a lot of their time being spent rearing children and mending clothes and. I. Do you think those weren’t ever communal activities I have questions)
So as all of gamedev starts drunking on the Tripwire Dude, are we going to admit that:
1) He’s not an exception;
2) Gamedev does not equal progressive;
3) Odds are, this includes some of your best work pals you just don’t talk politics with?
Burnout isn’t solely caused by overwork. Mine happened without a minute of overtime.
It can also be caused by constant stress without any control over making it stop.
See where I’m going?
That rock looked like that. Solid, in wireframe. The tessellation parameters had been cranked so far up (how, I don’t know) that it had just a few more triangles than needed.
And being a rock prop, there were A LOT of those around. Woops.
@lingerie_addict
Yeaaaaah that’s a thing. I’m assuming they mean they’re imitating the texture, drape, halo and all that. Been making the handspinners group I’m in laugh and cry in equal measure
