It’s not that we see protests as the primary form of political activity, as Chait says. Protests happen when people lack power or voice. Big donors can call a university president and get results; students can’t! Liberal critics of protesters often ignore these power imbalances.

This framework overlooks the 116 million people who didn't vote in 2016 because they didn't feel represented by the candidates, the majority of whom lean left. This kind of thinking, which parades as fact based, is just crashing us into a brick wall.

Other things being equal a candidate closer to the center is more likely to win a general election. This used to be the conventional wisdom, now is fairly unpopular, but it's still probably true, and is more robust empirically than most suppositions about "electability".
