Just got a reply from postdoc application I did in February 2019!
The best part:
"I'm writing to inform you we have received your CV and planning to arrange an interview, are you free at ..."
Seriously guys??? 😂
Let's get something straight
If postdocs sign a 40h/week contract, get paid accordingly, and you expect them to work 60h, you are the one lacking "work ethics" not them.
If some want to work 60h some weeks, that's on them. If you expect this to be the normal... PAY THEM TO DO SO
@jenheemstra
Some years ago, I was organizing some old boxes with my younger sister (11 years old), and she found a floppy disk and asked me:
"Why did you 3d printed the save icon?"
I had no clue where to start. 😂
I'm now reviewer
#6
in a paper, and the nonsense of having 6 people looking at this paper under the microscope is absurd.
I wonder... if the reviewing "service" was not free, would they be doing this?
The word is out!
I'm beyond excited to announce that I'll be joining the Microbiology Cluster of
@RIBESresearch
at
@Radboud_Uni
as a new PI to start my research group!
That's a major step on a career/personal plan that I started 5 years ago, and now is coming into reality!
🚨This is not a drill🚨
All paperwork is done
On Feb 1st, I'll be joining the Department of Microbiology at
@RIBESresearch
as an assistant professor!
My new group will study Ecology & Evolution from the standpoint of virus-host interactions
Stay tuned for available positions!👀

3 positions for you to choose from:
The first one.
If you like bioinformatics, and wanna explore more about virus-archaea interactions, come join my group!
📢 I'm thrilled to announce this pre-print! 🥳
Ever since the debate on a possible bacterial origin of innate immune mechanisms gained traction, I've been wondering: What role do Archaea play in it? 🧵

Come on
@UVA
.... Emily Loeb is a Doctor doing research! Not a student anymore.
A post like this is what makes people ask Ph.Ds when they are gonna start working.
This type of terminology I expect from my family on the table, not from a University.
Are you interested in exploring meta-omics data to unfold the diversity of microbes using bioinformatics tools?

Apparently this color is a optical illusion. The water is clear.
Geoscientist Max Wisshak, who led the expedition, told McClatchy News the color of the water is an optical illusion: It’s actually “crystal clear,” he said in an email.
I have some exciting news!
Next year, I will be joining professor
@archaeal
team at the University of Texas, Austin.
I'm thrilled to start working with archaea, bioinformatics and use some microscopy again.
A special shout-out to
@val_deanda
for the talks and help. 😊

Empathy!
Remember how it is to be a student, and that each one has their own struggles to do the same task.
Never use themselves as a measure of how a student should work or behave.

Here is a fun fact:
You actually need a magnetic field, not necessary a magnet to create another magnet. 🤓
The natural magnets we find in nature are mostly magnetite. A huge percentage of it was form by lava slowly cooling down to form the magnetite crystals (magmatic rocks) 🧲
And here we are... Nijmegen! +7h of jet lag, not fully responsible for my actions at the moment.
I couldn't resist and went to the Uni to take a look around, and say Hi to my new colleagues! ❤️🤍
t-2 days before we start! \o/
@AcademicChatter
If you have no idea of what to do in the lab... you are in the right place!
You enter a PhD program to LEARN and produce. Never forget this!
Now it is official!
For the next 20ish days I'm the owner of a swim club! 🌊
That is beyond insane, so I'm trying not to think about what I just did!
This history is worthy to tell the long version so follow along if you like 🧵 (1/6)
For people struggling with rejections, let me put something here.
Failure is not the opposite of success, it is just part of it!
You are gonna be ok! Take a look back, reset the plan and on to the next one! 🚀

I'm curious to see how many people will get who this guy is
Definitely, he was the first inspiring athlete/hero combo that I was amazed by.
I did a thing!
Brazilian senate is investigating the actions of the Government during the pandemic.
One of the topics is the use of Hydroxychloroquine as a pre-treatment for Covid. The work of that famous french microbiologist is used to support this policy. (1/3)

The male-white-European-rich-succesfull guy feels discriminated against during a 5 days meeting...
That's good... Now he could just imagine how it feels for females and POC to feel like this EVERY SINGLE DAY in their career.
I got asked by a friend:
"What was more challenging... stay 9 years with someone or 11 years single?"
Honey. Challenging was to live on a PhD and postdoc salary for 8 years 😂😂
I can be a little bias 🇧🇷 😁
But knowing a fraction of how this moment was built (patience, hard work, resilience, consistency...), makes it priceless!
@BFratus
showed us what it means to be a true Olympian! 💪🏽

You are right!
Just remember: You can be harsh and still be supportive.
If you criticize someone's work, you should try to figure out what is going on.
If you're not happy with someone's performance, you should be part of the solution. That's what great leadership is about.

"Stop saying what I want to hear and tell me what you really want! You should aim to be better than me, and I will do everything I can to lead you this way!" In one of our many conversations about career planning. I miss him so much! Almost every day!
@DaniBeckman
I have so much to say... but I'm not sure I can formulate it properly. 😡
I'll keep it simple.
The working visa system in the US is disrespectful on so many levels!
In my final year of PhD, I lost my friend and supervisor.
After nine years of researching magnetotactic bacteria using microscopy, it felt strange to continue without him
I switched to work with bioinformatics. Now, 6 years later, I'm about to become a professor in this field
I sent this report for 11 senators.
Today, one of them is questioning the accuracy of some studies, and the conduct of some scientists supporting the use of Hydroxychloroquine.
I'm not sure if my report has something to do with it, but this feels so good! Information is power!
I'll never forget one of the last conversations I had with my supervisor.
While talking about career plans, he said:
"I'm here to make you better than I'll ever be. If you end up in the same place as I am... I failed! This is the game! You carry my name forward!"
I once met with a person at Harvard that had an illustrious career in science, devoted to one disease.
I asked if he felt like he had to be the one to cure it, or if anyone from the people he mentored would suffice.
His answer: it had to be him.
I respectfully disagree.
Friend: Yulia asked me if you are single
Me: Really? We spoke last week.
F: I told her you have a girlfriend in the Netherlands
Me: WHAT? WHY?
F: It is too hard to explain why you are stupid, and will take forever to invite her on a date.
Me: 😐
I need new friends!!
@AcademicChatter
I hold a Ph.D. in microbiology. I'm interested in compartmentalization on Prokaryotes (magnetotactic bacteria 🧲💜), environmental microbiology and microscopy
We raised 50k dollars!!! 🤯
That is too much money to put on an organization managed by strangers!
That is when I decided to make an offer for the club! When I get to Brazil, I will give it to my former coach, so he can keep it running and make a living doing what he loves!

This would be the coolest "paper idea" story of all times! 😂
I suggest we order/cook the beef soup again, and leave it in the fridge for 4 weeks documenting the culture progression... For reproducibility reasons. 😅👨🏽🔬

Just by your question, I can see that she will be fine.
Treat her with respect, just like you should do with any other human being. ✌🏽
I'll act cool about this... but this was one of the most exciting days of my scientific career! 😍
It all makes sense now why
@micromagnets
is such a great mentor, and I'm so glad to have him in my life!
I want to put this out there.
Let us lead by example during this crazy time!
Use your knowledge to inform others, but mainly show the right attitude!
What you do in your lifetime informs the generations that come after. Our attitudes are much bigger than just ourselves.
@AcademicChatter
I'm a Brazilian postdoc located in Austin,TX.
Last weekend I made a Feijoada to watch a football match.
The Feijoada was great, the match not so much! 😅
I wrote a brief report about the scientific verification of the inefficiency of these pre-treatments, and the history behind some of it supporters.
Part of this report was based on the information that
@MicrobiomDigest
have being bringing to light with her amazing work (2/3)
Just finish my poster pitch slides for tomorrow at
#ISME18
I'm still not sure what I'm doing!
Godspeed! 🙃
📢 Come see my poster tomorrow and talk to me!!!
If you don't have fun, I'll pay you ice cream on Wednesday!
I was invited to be in the medal ceremony for the 200 IM event of the 2022 Speedo Southern Zone Championships!
They offered me U$200 to just... be there!
You know the last time I got 200 bucks to give a talk about science? Or even 50? NEVER 🤡
