Great time this weekend at the Boston Biocomputing Hackathon!
It was inspiring to see the results of bringing together talented bio-developers and directing them towards a problem โ creating workflows for scientists to process biological data.
Two of our favorite projects:
2/ Modern biology requires wrangling massive datasets. Yet talented bioinformaticians are so scarce that biologists often wait weeks for simple data analysis. This utterly cripples the research cycle, massively delaying breakthrough cures for cancer, heart disease, and aging.
Today, weโre introducing Latch Pods: A supercomputer in the cloud for biodevelopment.
A pre-configured environment with Jupyter Labs and RStudio ready to go!

Workflows in the wild (Github and custom front-ends) often lack test data that scientists can use to quickly check functionality.
All workflows on the Latch Platform () now have test data, allowing anyone to test them in 30 seconds.
Building tools for biologists is hard. Biodevs lack the resources to release workflows with a cloud-deployed GUI. The result is fragmented and inaccessible tools.
Latch SDK makes workflow development faster AND automatically creates a cloud-deployed GUI.
Today we go 2.0โฆ

LatchBio is a repository of versioned no-code tools, managed computing infrastructure and collaborative data hub tailor made for biological research.
6/N
Automation, next-generation sequencing and multiplexed assays have drowned the modern biologist in a deluge of complex and unwieldy data. Transforming this flood of information into human interpretable insights is expensive and painful.
3/N
Yet talented bioinformaticians, a rare breed of SWE x scientist, are far and few between. Furthermore, the need for data versioning, reproducible computation and data infrastructure becomes an enormous engineering project, requiring an army and fortune to build.
5/N
Scientists often need to run dozens of pipelines at the same time, making interfaces without batch-mode very tedious.
All workflows in the Latch Platform () now have batch-mode built in. Letting anyone import a CSV and launch hundreds of workflows at once.

3/ lets biologists run CRISPR computational analysis in their browser without a single line of code. The flow is simple: upload sequence data, find a workflow, run a workflow on your data, and visualize the results.
Biologists are often more comfortable in the wet lab than in front of a computer terminal and lack the background in software to solve this problem for themselves.

Integrative Genomics Viewer (IGV) is a great tool for visualizing and exploring genomics data. But any scientist that has used it knows that it can be a hassle to get it up and running.
