You know that story about Philip of Macedon sending a message to Sparta saying "If I invade Sparta, I will destroy you" and the Spartans sent back "If"?
Yeah, he invaded Sparta and destroyed a huge chunk of their territory.

Been reading medieval etiquette manuals recently (as you do) and most of them have a bit about NOT befriending the local cats while taking part in a formal meal. Which suggests cats are both really common and have been jumping onto the dinner table mid meal for centuries.
OTD: 26th April 1944. After months of planning, everything is ready.
The team moves into position near the chosen ambush point, a sharp bend in the road between the general's HQ and his private villa at Knossos.
In the previous days, they have been joined by additional…
OTD: 6th February 1944. At dawn after a full day and night trek, Paddy, Sandy, and the Andartes make it to the "home-cave" deep in the ancient and cypress strewn mountains above the villages of Kritsa and Tapai.
It is from here that Paddy will use a clandestine radio to contact…
2024 is a big year for anniversaries. Normandy, Warsaw, Arnhem etc.
However, long term followers will know that I'm a bit obsessed with the abduction of General Kreipe by agents of the SOE, which took place in the spring of 1944.
To mark the anniversary, I'm going to be…

One of the first things you see in Fallout 1 is American soldiers shooting a man in the head and laughing, before it cuts to advertisements and the camera pans out to show the blasted wasteland and a voice explains that the war was fought over resources...

I am, once again, amazed at how emotionally invested some people claim to be over what some guy in an office in an industrial estate in Nottingham slapped together to hit a deadline before going to the onsite pub.
@DeborahMeaden
This is all because the NT had the audacity to actually say what the people who built these grand and lovely houses that dot the landscape actually did for a living and that makes them feel awkward.
OTD: 28th April 1944, right now 18:19 GMT, a German radio message is sent & intercepted by British signals intelligence, to be decoded & translated at Bletchley Park.
The message reads that the general's car has been found abandoned with a letter left behind.
The letter states:…
OTD: 28th April 1944. The team continues through the foothills of Mount Ida, the general atop a mule wearing Stratis' police greatcoat for warmth, looking much like Napoleon.
They are very careful to never use the words "Kreipe" or "Strategos" in case he overhears and realises…

The photo is of George Doundoulakis, not George Psychoundakis. Doundoulakis was also a member of the Cretan resistance and his brother Helias (who became an OSS agent) wrote books about his wartime experience and family connections with PLF.
This is George Psychoundakis:

SOE agent Stephen Verney volunteered after learning that Greek speakers were needed for a secret mission. It was only when he had been trained in clandestine activities that anyone realised he meant he could speak ancient Greek, not modern, and a translator had to be found...
‘I shall never forget the after-dinner speech that Lord Hailsham made in Athens at a European Speakers' Conference… He delivered his speech in Greek. Unfortunately, he did so in Ancient Greek and nobody understood a word!’

If I recall this has been debunked but can't remember where. I think the original article only looked into how much time peasants spent working for their lord, without factoring in they'd then need to work their own land as well, in addition to work that has to be done daily.

Yes, but the clothes and flesh have since rotted away leaving hollow cavities in the ash, which archaeologists fill with plaster (or resin) to make casts of the victims and artefacts. This infographic explains is.
We’ve now looked into the catalogue description for AYY 238/2 and can confirm it was incorrectly labelled. As can be seen in this image, the original record from the War Office supplied with the film in 1942 does incorrectly label the aircraft in the film as Spitfires. <1/2>
First, some background to make sure we are all on the same page.
The island of Crete fell to the Nazis in June 1941 despite a truly heroic defence by Commonwealth and Greek defenders. Partisan and resistance groups formed almost instantly, and agents of the Special Operations…

Yeah, whoever heard of anyone complaining about soldiers pay during war time?! I mean, apart from Captain Cunningham-Reid, Conservative MP...
The two SOE agents killed in occupied Crete, Dudley Churchill Perkins and William Arthur Knox, are both buried in Souda Bay Allied War Cemetery, beautifully maintained and looked after by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission.
As well as fighting on air, land, and sea, the Allies fought a subtle war of intelligence and espionage for the liberation of Europe and beyond.
In our latest blog, we tell the story of agents of the SOE:

A converted bomber carries a handpicked team. SOE agent Patrick "Paddy" Leigh Fermor parachutes into the isolated Lasithi mountains of eastern Crete. Sudden clouds force the plane & the others to turn back.

A brilliant example of how people will see something in a youtube video and then repeat it, years later, even without any kind of evidence other than the video.
So, for the last year, I've been writing a live action supernatural murder mystery. 15,000 words later and it's this weekend!
To kick things off, my best Anthony Blanche impression. Brandy Alexander. Yum. Yum (and definitely not Frijj milkshake...).

OTD: 30th April 1944. The team spends a truly miserable night crossing the shoulder of Mount Ida. The weather is against them. Wind, rain and cloud, scrambling up the slope "steepened to the tilt of ladder".

OTD: 29th April 1944. A few hours later, the team reach the "lair" of the local resistance leader Kapetan (Captain) Petrakoyorghis, who welcomes them warmly.

Kreipes driver was Alfred Fenske, a 30 year old sergeant. Years later, the Cretan woman in whose home he was billeted recalls he "tall, skinny, scrawny, but young and likeable." He carried a photo of his wife and son in his paybook and gave his chocolate rations to children in…

OTD: 3rd May 1944. A new hiding place. Neither Paddy or Billy are specific but it's somewhere in the Valley of Gomara.
