Now available online, my chapter "Understanding Ancient Mysteries," for the new
#OER
textbook, Traces: An Open Introduction to Archaeology! The book is still in development, but its going to be a great text to introduce folks to
#archaeology
!
Ancient Alien Theorists: That rock is too big for people to move. MuST Be AliENs!!!
Archaeologists: Have you tried, because we tried and it wasn't that bad!
Dear Evolutionary Psychologists,
Please stop saying “Back when we lived in caves.” Humans didn’t regularly live in caves. It’s just that remains survive in caves better then in open air sites. You’re trying to define our species by a sampling error.
Sincerely,
An Archaeologist
Ancient Alien Theorists: "Mainstream" archaeology is so afraid of change, why can't you accept new ideas???
Archaeologists: Your TV Show does nothing but parrot a 50 year-old book whose author was successfully sued for plagiarism. Go home!
Ancient Alien Theorists: BUT, BUT, BUT, ancient art has pictures of helicopters!!!
Archaeologists: Umm, why do aliens even need helicopters? And anyway its not a helicopter, the Egyptians carved a second set of glyph on the top.
Queer Eye, but a tour of queer identities across the ancient world so we can finally rid ourselves the false notion that LGBTQ only just appeared in 1970s San Francisco. 🏳️🌈
To be fair, I don’t actually want
@HISTORY
to
#CancelAncientAliens
, I want them to air a LONG retraction, narrated by
@Tsoukalos
, describing how they have misrepresented the accomplishments of indigenous people & archaeological research! Then they can cancel
@AncientAliens
.
Mack Tut!!!
Artist Tim Klein makes puzzle montages from different puzzles using the same die cut pattern. And of course there would be
#ArchaeologicalOddities
!
Ancient Alien Theorists: There’s no way humans could have moved these giant statues.
Archaeologists: Have you tried.
AAT: Didn’t you hear me, there’s no way people could do it!!!
A: Okay, because we tried it, and it’s not that hard.
AAT: WHY ARE YOU SO CLOSED MINDED!!!
If someone tells you, “Nobody knows how ancient people moved large rocks,” they’re either lying to you or deliberately ignoring a giant pile of research in experimental archaeology.

Need a timeline cleanser? Here are four panoramic photos of Machu Picchu taken by Hiram Bingham during his 1913 expedition to the famed archaeology site in the Andes Mountains of Peru.
Dear
@Converse
, I’m an archaeology professor who is literally addicted to Chucks (ask my students) and I need to know where to find a pair of these, along with (pretty pretty please) an ancient Maya themed pair! 😍😍😍
ALL GEOLOGICAL, ARCHAEOLOGICAL, AND HISTORICAL EVIDENCE SUPPORTS THE GREAT SPHINX OF GIZA DATING TO THE MID THIRD MILLENNIUM BCE. JUST BECAUSE YOU HEARD DIFFERENTLY ON JOE ROGAN'S PODCAST DOESN'T MEAN THERE'S ANY EVIDENCE WHATSOEVER TO CLAIM ITS THOUSANDS OF YEARS OLDER.
You’re not officially an archaeologist until someone says to you “But, maybe there really could have been a global super civilization 12,000 years ago that disappeared and left no remains behind.”
You're not officially a Classicist until someone has proudly shown you their new Latin tattoo and you've smiled while internally screaming at the nonsense with which they've inscribed their flesh.
Netflix series pitch, archaeologists busting false conspiracy claims while simultaneously shining a light on the amazing accomplishments of people from the ancient world.
Dear
@joerogan
, speaking as a “mainstream” archaeologist, the image you’re referring to is the sarcophagus lid of Pacal, ruler of Palanque. It depicts him falling into the underworld at the moment of his death. 1/
At the 10:30 mark,
@joerogan
discusses the Palenque slab von Daniken made famous by claiming it's a rocketship. Joe asks to know what the mainstream makes of it. I nominate
@DSAArchaeology
be the next guest.
Dear “Science” Channel,
1) The Maya did not suddenly vanish. Please update your textbooks past those published in the 50s.
2) By pushing this bullshit you are literally undermining the public understanding of science.
Sincerely, An actual Maya archaeologist
Professors, please do not require your students to attend synchronous online classes.
Not everyone has reliable internet at home, and many of your students’ schedules have changed with new work & family responsibilities. Please help them out with a flexible learning environment!
Me, an archaeologist, hiding under the bed:
Armed robber: ....
Me: ....
Armed robber: ....
Me: ....
Armed robber: I heard aliens built the pyramids!
Me: WE LITERALLY HAVE A LETTER WRITTEN BY A GUY WHO HELPED BRING BLOCKS TO GIZA! FOR FUCK’S SAKE... shit.
The Olmec were a culture that lived in along the southern Gulf Coast of Mexico more than 2,000 years ago.
They are best known for a tradition of monumental sculptures including Colossal Heads & Altars. But did you know there's a relationship between these sculpture types? 1/13
Just because archaeologists aren’t returning your phone calls doesn’t mean they’re “at a loss.”
They’re just tired of you misrepresenting their work and the achievements of indigenous populations around the globe.
Throughout the world, ancient objects have been found that leave archaeologists at a loss. Could these impossible artifacts suggest that extraterrestrials existed on Earth thousands of years before our own?
#AncientAliens
is brand new tonight!
What if, and hear me out, cable television channels took the millions of dollars they spent on show after show looking for
#Atlantis
, and spent it on telling people about actual archaeology?
Good Morning to everyone except the Ancient Alien Theorists who ignore the fact that there is direct evidence indigenous people could move large stones without extraterrestrial help.
Well that blew up!
If you’re looking for a more serious discussion, I was on
@sciencevs
talking about the problems with
#AncientAliems
claims.
Check it out!
As an archaeologist, I am immediately skeptical of any documentary about the ancient world that includes the words “lost,” “secret,” or “mystery,” in the title.
We can promote the amazing achievements of our ancestors without resorting to sensationalism or outright bullshit!
