Yesterday was the highlight of my career. At 26, I was notified that I have been awarded the Harvard South African Fellowship commencing in September '22. I'll spend the time working on my monograph. This Honour is usually reserved for mid-level career professionals aged 30-45.
Black women in leadership positions are scrutinised so harshly. A man could’ve have said this but not get the same kind of backlash. Women are continually positioned as carers and if they deviate from that, we vilify them harshly.
We should never celebrate the burning of knowledge, whether by accident, design or natural disaster. Remember that one of the world's most tragic disasters started with the burning of books and resulted in the death of more than 6 million people. No to racial hate!

Got a haircut and a facial hair trim today. Happy Friday bakwethu!
Ave ngizithanda kodwa when my hair’s freshly cut. I’d started to look like a hobo😂
Abafana abahle 🤞🏽🏳️🌈
Today is World Teacher’s Day. To all the folks who have dedicated their lives to the profession, we celebrate you & your sacrifice. From pre-school teachers to the lecturers & professors in the university. What you do means so much to the world ❤️
From a dedicated academic 😘
Looking professorial as we’re back in the mill of the grind! Queer academics, rise up 🏳️🌈
Excited to meet my students later this week🫶🏽! Wish me luck 🍀
The lighting wasn’t that great but damn I was feeling myself in Tuesday 😅
And as a result, I gave an awesome paper at WiSER!
Good morning Twitter Fam… 🫶🏽
My study is nearly complete. My library had been in boxes the entire week. It was the most frustrating thing in the world, as it meant I could not write with ease.
When I look at my younger self, I often think… I was so critical of that young person and he was just trying his hardest and being his best known self. Be kind to yourself
I want do something for my birthday on Tuesday. Registration season is upon us… & I’d love to be able to sponsor 3-5 grad students (Hon & M) reg. fees.
Can we make it happen…? The goal is R22,5K sponsoring students from

Two young minds of the South African higher education landscape, thinking about the future of our sector. Thabo is a formidable leader having led the Faculty of Education
@UKZN
to make it one of the best performing in the country. Thank you Gasa.
I became an academic because my mother made teaching look like a superhero Job. As a kid, in my mind, she was a superhero who didn't wear a cape. Dressed well, always looked professional & spoke so highly of her kids in school. I wanted that kinda life!
I sometimes dream of an army of PhD candidates who'd be doing work on the Black Archive, under my supervision, with a cool team of Co-Supervisors. We'd all develop knowledge collectively & as colleagues. Catering to the needs & interests of Blackfolk across RSA. A dream. One day!
The pressure seems to be easing up a bit as we near the conclusion of the academic year. Being thrust into teaching, in the middle of the year, straight after sabbatical wasn’t easy!
Good morning and Happy Monday. A good week to all!
For my birthday, my muntu got me a beautiful piece… & because it was coming in from JHB it wasn’t framed, so I had to get it framed. I finally got it framed & it arrived today 😍🥺😍🥺
Best birthday present for ever!
