Maurice and Lorraine McCabe are private people. We are hugely grateful that they trusted

and myself to tell their often distressing, deeply personal story. Tune in to RTE One at 9.35 for part two of

I found it! Here’s Eamon Farrell and myself toiling away at the

coalface. Note the cutting edge technology. Not sure of the exact date but it appears that Stephen Hendry has just beaten Jimmy White in the snooker. Great memories of Aertel and all who sailed in her.
RTÉ will close Aertel next week after over three decades in service. The teletext service, which has been running since 1986, will be switched off on Thursday 12 October

Keelin Shanley was hugely talented and had an extraordinary work ethic. She was also the best kind of friend - kind and generous and supportive and courageous. And just so smart and self-deprecating and funny. It was a privilege to know her.
Congrats to all my colleagues on their moves today. I’m really looking forward to working with a great production team to make Saturday with Katie Hannon a great listen. And never fear
@LatedebateRTE
fans - we’re also back on air from mid-September. Can’t wait!
So almost 5 years after I first began to cover this story, I am delighted to be able to present the final chapter. Myself and producer

are hugely grateful to the McCabe family for trusting us with their story. It's compelling. RTE 1 Mon & Tues 9.35.

So a quick recap: homelessness is not as bad as in other countries; homelessness is normal; media reports on homelessness are damaging Ireland's reputation; homelessness 'doesn't happen overnight' and 'takes years of bad behaviour'. Did I miss anything?

Breaking News as just announced on
@radiokerry
Katie Hannon, Journalist, Radio and TV presenter, employed by RTE, has been selected as the Kerry Person of the Year for 2023, by the Kerry Association in Dublin.
Congratulations
@KatieGHannon
Fair play to you Ellen. A lot of journalists - especially in cash-poor local media - will be very grateful to you for holding your nerve on this story despite official denials. That sort of ad revenue might pay bills now but ultimately corrodes everything journalism stands for.
Another case of a good family man who just snapped. The fact that he had been jailed for battering her isn’t mentioned until paragraph 15. You need to read down further to learn they were separated & she texted she was ‘terrified’ just weeks before he killed her with a hammer.
My feed is full of All Ireland and 9/11 talk so on this busy, significant day I’m going to shoehorn in one last push for this. It’s a story that needs to be heard.

It’s been 24 hours of relentlessly nice notifications now and frankly it’s a bit unsettling. Before normal transmission resumes thank you all very very much. And special thanks to the man who accidentally congratulated

and got her to follow me. That was class.
I was so shocked and saddened to hear this news earlier. Michael was great company & a terrific political analyst. He wore his formidable intellect lightly, tirelessly championing all things and all people of Kerry with good humour & admirable grace. My sympathies to his family.
The audience’s spontaneous laughter was what gave this clip news value. To broadcast it on a news programme with the laughter edited out really is extraordinary.
This is utterly extraordinary.

The first part is from last night’s debate, the second is from BBC News at 1pm today.

The journalist who broke the Dail printer story is the same journalist who first pointed out that Dara Murphy was claiming expenses for Dail attendance when his tweets revealed he was spending these days in the capitals of Europe. Well done
@hughescraig90
So true. These exit polls really are a vindication of the citizens assembly. So much of the analysis of its decision on this was that its recommendations went way too far for the country in general. If this is the result, they were bang on.
Have spoken with journalists in local papers who confirm & are deeply concerned by this. Industry is struggling so is vulnerable to demands like this in return for ad revenue. Some believe Creative Ireland campaign was testing the water ahead of more political paid-for campaigns.

By my count that makes 8 other people besides the Minister who knew that Maurice McCabe's motives were being challenged at the O'Higgins Commission in May 2015. How many of them forgot this email as well?
So the mystery man passing on info re the Garda Commissioner's strategy was no less than the Deputy Director General of the Office of the Attorney General Office Richard Barrett.

So proud of these boys & all they’ve done for our country. We don’t deserve their brilliance. They fought for school meals, kneeled against racism, wore the rainbow with pride & even rode a unicorn!! They are our present & future & they made England united ❤️🤍

It’s not often that a news headline properly stops you in your tracks. Such shocking, sad news for her family and friends. A true trailblazer for women - and men - in journalism. RIP.
This made me cry. A beautiful piece with Conor on Keelin and the life they built together that she had to leave behind.

We can’t take it anymore, we’re exhausted… We’re gonna get killed, it’s just a matter of when. There’s no protection, no impunity. These PPEs don’t protect us. Nothing protects journalists. We lose lives, one by one… Mohammed Abu Hatab was here, half an hour ago.

All young adults should see this graph: Korea’s mass testing for Covid 19 indicates those aged 20 to 30 are by far the the most likely to be carriers but very often - as its impact on healthy people in this group is mild to invisible - they won’t realise it. And so it spreads.
I’m NERVOUS again- about young adults. Korea’s pop wide
#COVID19
tests have revealed something scary: YOUNG PEOPLE are leading carriers. (Italy only tests the rather sick, biases to old people). If the socially active age20-29 truly carry 30% of all cases— that means trouble! 😨

Okay. We understand homeless services are under huge pressure. But who would put a mother with a preemie infant and a 16 month old baby in one night only hostels for several weeks leaving them to walk the streets with their babies in winter weather?
This interview with Anna and Gary will stay with me for a very long time. A rapist destroyed this girl’s life. It’s never the victim’s fault. But if you’re on hols or clubbing please remember there are predators like this out there. Enjoy yourself but take precautions & stay safe

While we're all fulminating about Trump's move against Jim Acosta take a minute to read about what investigative journalists are up against much closer to home.
It appears to may be harder to stick to the party line and get your story straight when there is more than one party (and armies of competing spin doctors).
So the Taoiseach's remarks were not just leaked but 'selectively' leaked. Clear implication is that

says twice the Taoiseach's comments have been taken out of context and "selectively leaked". Says Govt wants to protect reporting over opinion making. Complimentary of the idea of public service broadcasting/RTE.

Some years ago I was shown a 1974 ministerial briefing doc on Thalidomide which stated ‘the govt does not regard itself as under any legal or moral obligation to compensate the victims’. It also set out how no govt public warning was issued, apparently to avoid causing panic.
Key new email shows Dept official advising Minister to say 'both the Garda Commissioner and myself have always made it clear that Sgt McCabe is a valued member of the force' in context of query re Commissioner's 'aggressive stance' towards McCabe at O'Higgins Commision in Jul '15
