We need to strengthen our actions to improve air quality, and stop worsening climate change, pollution, and harmful health impacts on our hardest-hit communities. One of the steps toward a healthier future is replacing heavily-polluting diesel trucks with clean-fuel trucks:
Wearing Masks to Prevent the Spread of COVID:
"While we may wish the pandemic were over, wishing does not make it so. Taking effective measures to stop the spread, including masking, is the thoughtful response, and will help end the pandemic, rather than pretending it is over."
"Wearing a higher quality mask, such as an N95 or KN95, substantially reduces the risk of COVID transmission, both for the person wearing it, and for the people around them.
Why would we want to do any less?”
"Even the loose official new CDC guidance recognizes that there are millions of people for whom the unmasking is incredibly dangerous - including those who cannot be vaccinated (which includes young children), the immunocompromised, and people with pre-existing conditions."
"Furthermore, the risk factors in most public discussions have ignored the danger of "long COVID" -- in which even those who have a "mild" initial infection, may suffer a wide array of ongoing negative health impacts for a long time afterwards."
When thousands were dying of AIDS during the Reagan administration - for a long time officials did not acknowledge it at all, and when they responded at a press conference they told jokes. Homophobic jokes.
Good news update: This morning the Board of the Authority which oversees the Oakland Arena voted unanimously to move forward with the process of a lease with AASEG to bring a

"We have actions we can take to help protect both ourselves, and one another. We can care about disability justice. We can care about the stark racial inequities being revealed and exacerbated by COVID. We can care about the people around us. And we can protect our own health."
At the Oakland City Council meeting today, we successfully passed our proposal to have the City offer quality masks (like N95, KN95) to the public for free at city facilities!
@susanslusser
Let’s be clear, the city of Oakland had, and still has, not only one, but two, excellent sites with approvals for development that allow for ballpark to be built faster, easier, and at less cost than moving to Las Vegas.
Barbara Lee speaks for me!
“MLB’s continued active encouragement of the A’s abandonment of Oakland and the East Bay runs counter the rationale supporting MLB’s century-old exemption from federal anti-trust law. I ask you to reconsider… Sincerely, Barbara Lee Member of Congress”
My family has exciting news to share! My wife Kirthi and I are thrilled to announce the birth of our child! We are overjoyed to welcome our wonderful daughter. Thank you so much for your words of joy and encouragement as we embark on this exciting new phase in our lives.
Oakland city council unanimously approved proposal to advance revitalization of the coliseum complex with AASEG!
This means more jobs, activity, business, and revenue to support vital public services for the long term!
Oakland, CA -- Today, the Oakland Alameda County Coliseum Authority (OACCA) approved the Oakland Roots and Soul Soccer teams to play their 2025 Season home matches in the Coliseum Stadium.
@JohnSheaHey
The City of Oakland did more than "find a solution" - & authorized the use of not only one, but two, sites Manfred requested - Coliseum & Howard Terminal. Both have environmental clearance and infrastructure support. Either could easily house the A's latest proposed ballpark.
The future of the Oakland A’s isn’t set yet. There remain several hurdles to jump before the Las Vegas proposal could take place. With the increasing problems and extended timeline there, it would be faster and easier to build in Oakland.
With the increasing problems for the Las Vegas ballpark proposal, it would be faster and easier to build in Oakland.
Oakland, with perfect weather in the heart of a large media market, could accommodate the latest proposal faster and for less expense.
Congratulations to

This is likely why the A’s leadership blew up the planned final negotiations with Oakland Mayor and her team when the finish line was just 3 days away. They weren’t afraid it would fail - they were afraid it would succeed.
“It's funny, because just a couple of weeks ago the A's rejected a Pioneer League team from playing one single game at the Oakland Coliseum, but now they are roaming around the country looking for a Triple-A ballpark to take them in for at least 3 years”

Congresswoman Barbara Lee has sent a letter to MLB opposing their efforts to encourage and subsidize the A’s to abandon Oakland and the East Bay, and saying this runs counter to the purpose of their Federal anti-trust exemption. Full letter at:
@OakStadiumWatch
Dear Commissioner Rob Manfred: It seems you do not have the correct information about the situation in Oakland - so I wanted to make sure you know - we took action to advance not only one, but two, major important development sites for the A's, as requested.

Amazing how many people
learned so little from HIV/AIDS.
Not only the pathetic Federal response to let people die - but also that the initial infection was “flu-like” but major problems could hit years later.
People with the most privilege are the most likely to afford and use private cars. Making public transit less safe disproportionately harms communities who are most likely to be transit dependent.
@wabbit011235813
Yes! With my experience working on HIV/AIDS prevention, including in the 1980s when federal officials treated that pandemic as a joke, it’s horrifying to see how little learning the lessons of the past is happening at the top. Deaths from HIV came long after initial infection.
@carabeara13
@MayorShengThao
Here’s documents.
Both Rob Manfred and the A’s owners demanded the Oakland coliseum site - and specifically said that it would guarantee the A’s would stay in Oakland. (And they would use it for ballpark if they couldn’t do Howard Terminal). Once allowed, they refused to do so.

Bigotry is a violation of my faith. The Bible prohibits it too.
They claim to follow the Bible, but they ignore the line, repeated many times, “do not oppress the stranger, for you were stranger in the land of Egypt.”
@J0MBi1
The inconvenient truth of climate change. It would have been much easier to transition to sustainable systems if we had started earlier - and people in power let it keep getting much worse for many years once facts were known. And still are.
At the Oakland City Council meeting today, we successfully passed our proposal to have the City offer quality masks (like N95, KN95) to the public for free at city facilities!
“During the game, the A’s stadium camera crew didn’t show any fans wearing the “sell” t-shirts on the big screen, opting instead to show clips of fans from past games.”
“Oakland is a community that values social justice, equality, and women’s rights,” Kaplan wrote. “These principles align with those of the WNBA, and we are ready to move forward as a partner in advancing those goals as the home for a new WNBA team.”

This is why a system based on letting billionaires have tax loopholes, and then expecting them to choose to donate charity, doesn’t work.
"During a meeting of the Oakland-Alameda Coliseum Authority, Oakland Vice Mayor Rebecca Kaplan and Alameda County Supervisor Nate Miley highlighted the site’s strategic location, emphasizing its accessibility by transit and roadways. To facilitate development at Coliseum..."
The story of Hanukkah tells of the re-dedication of the temple after it had been desecrated. Tonight in Oakland we experienced a Hanukkah miracle, as the lights were restored, and lit again. And hundreds of people showed up on short notice to support.

Yes, Oakland, with perfect weather in the heart of a large media market, is a fabulous place for a new ballpark and could readily accommodate the latest proposal faster and for less expense than Las Vegas.
The fan reverse boycott is dramatically increasing turnout for today’s A’s game - from 3,000 to now expected 30,000!
And Barbara Lee introduced a bill to protect communities!

In light of the court ruling removing masks on airplanes and other mass transportation, I wanted to Re-release this statement: about the importance of wearing quality masks when inside with other people.
It’s still true.

Perhaps their next series of articles are:
Who are those fanatics who think we should wear seatbelts in cars forever?
Why it’s a waste of effort to wear condoms.
Those leftist extremists who think we need safe drinking water.
Why the Reagan-era CDC was right to ignore AIDS.
We’ve got next!
Oakland is a perfect place for a new WNBA team! I’m inspired by the proposal to bring a new WNBA team to the Oakland arena - which is already setup for basketball, and easily accessible throughout the region.
#WNBA
Also this month, WNBA growing in recognition:
Fans in Oakland were the loudest in the nation - then Warriors owners chose to ditch the fans for a location that is expensive and harder to get to - and brought insulting case to try to stick our taxpayers with their Arena debt. We didn't abandon you Klay - owners abandoned us.
Klay Thompson: “I expect our crowd to be a little more into it too. Like I know it’s not the playoffs but it is our last go around in Oracle, the least you can do is stand up when we make a good play.”
The Oakland City Council on Tuesday unanimously approved the Oakland Ballers' plan to spend $1.6 million in upgrades to Raimondi Park, allowing the independent professional baseball team to play its inaugural 48 home games at the West Oakland park.
I have followed up on complaints about this and in our conversations we’ve confirmed that nobody is supposed to be telling fans not to wear SELL t-shirts anywhere at the coliseum. If this happens to you please let me know.
"COVID-19 cases are rising in California and UCSF's Dr. Bob Wachter posted on Twitter Monday that he's returning to more cautious behavior and putting his mask back on in indoor public spaces where they may not be required."
“The Oakland city council unanimously approved Kaplan’s plan to put the city administration in charge of permits instead of OPD. City staffers and hired security guards for event duties would be significantly cheaper than having police work overtime.”
@EliotJacobson
@DrAshLukes
For years those in power said it was too soon to take action on climate change or too uncertain or too expensive. Now with the costly failure will they claim it’s too late? We need to significantly increase walking biking transit, clean power and ZEV vehicles now.
@TheJaredIsham
These renderings again show that building the new ballpark in Oakland would be easier, faster, and cheaper. Plus stronger fan support, more TV revenue, better transportation access. In Oakland can have the approx. 15 acres desired, at an approved site. And better financially.
Many feared the coliseum would be abandoned. As we prepare to celebrate the World Cup, we’ve approved welcoming two teams in the largest and fastest growing sport. And more to come: Roots and Soul soccer at Oakland Coliseum
I want to thank my colleagues at the Oakland Alameda County Coliseum Authority (which I chair) who have been working with us to ensure that under any scenario, we can and do protect jobs, tax-payers, and our futures. In recent weeks we have taken multiple important steps.

@OakStadiumWatch
They said they wanted a huge site - first Coliseum, which has great transportation access, and Oakland did the work to advance it. Then they said they wanted Howard Terminal, and Oakland provided environmental clearance and brought hundreds of millions of $ for infrastructure.

“Also known as the Montreal massacre, an antifeminist mass shooting that occurred on December 6, 1989 at the École Polytechnique de Montréal in Montreal, Quebec. Fourteen women were murdered; ten further women and four men were injured.”
He appointed a “relocation committee” made up of one person! And the one person is The owner of the next MLB Team that is threatening to leave their community unless tax payers give them hundreds of millions of dollars:
“MLB officials have long viewed the site of the A’s current home, the Coliseum, as an optimal one because of existing infrastructure and proximity to freeways and BART….with a shorter timeline for completing a stadium.”
Oakland City Council approved the sale of our share of the former Raiders Training Facility to enable Roots and Soul soccer to continue and grow, and host visiting World Cup soccer, in partnership with Prologis. This will generate activity and community, and $$ for public needs.
"Back in 2018, when the A’s identified Howard Terminal as their target, they sought to buy the Coliseum land. Why? In a letter, Kaval said the Coliseum would be insurance, a back-up site if the HT project failed."
Beware those who lie to create fear. The tech some demanded yesterday Oakland get has already been here for years. The budget some falsely claim cut OPD by 50% actually increased it by $18 million. Those who lie about safety Can’t be trusted to be truthful nor to keep you safe.
The Bible passage about immigrants that he didn't want to hear, was Exodus 22:21. "Do not oppress or mistreat the stranger, for you were strangers in the land of Egypt."
@OakStadiumWatch
Now they suddenly have totally different plans. They don't want to build massive housing and parks and retail and commercial development. They don't even want to build an entertainment area. They want to lease a small site for ballpark. Can be done easily and quickly in Oakland.
@Dodgers
A statement that starts, "In the Spirit of unity" should NOT support bigoted attacks against the most marginalized, and agree to throw them under the bus to appease the bigots.

Al Gore did win the election in Florida. Then a mob of angry white Republicans attacked — and stopped the votes from being counted. And the loser of the election was sworn in as President.
When new bookings are impeded, this reduces jobs for local residents, and reduces revenue for needed public services. All of Oakland and Alameda County are harmed by cutting events and revenue at the coliseum:
We spent months working with the Coliseum, local fans, youth leagues and more to create a packed night that would celebrate our beloved Coliseum & Oakland's baseball legacy.
We're disappointed, but we won't be stopped.

I don't care much if you call my proposal, to allow duplexes - fourplexes in more parts of Oakland, "radical" if you want to - though it did pass Council unanimously, and includes anti-displacement protections.
But it's the practice of exclusion that should be called extreme.

Dr. Han, Deputy Health Officer for the County of Santa Clara Public Health: “Highly contagious subvariants are spreading here. If you add layers of protection like a high quality mask, it reduces risk to you and the chance you’ll infect others.”
