I lost my father to
#COVID19
I was tremendously fortunate to be at his side during his last few days in the ICU. He was a vaccinated physician who was helping work on additional clinical trials for the vaccine in Pakistan/1
🎉 Some News! 🎉 After 18 incredible years in Chicagoland, I'm thrilled to accept an offer from
@UMichPath
to join their dept. as Professor of Pathology, Director of the Division of Education Programs, Assistant Chair of Education and hematopathologist, starting Jan 2024!/1
I am so lucky to have found
#pathology
🙏🏾😍 🔬
Despite all the fear mongerers trying to dissuade me, the wrong generalizations, and the hesitation of not seeing patients directly, I am glad I persevered. I can’t think of anything more intellectually and professionally fulfilling…
A family of vaccinated physicians just lost a vaccinated and careful father/paternal figure. My father took every precaution and did everything right. Someone less careful put him at risk. Don’t wait till you are burying a loved one. Please take
#COVID19
seriously.
When choosing a place to train, institutional 'prestige' is good and all, but prioritize excellent mentorship, an atmosphere of inclusivity, diversity in spirit AND action, and sponsorship. If you find all in 1, it's a WIN.
I will die on this hill.
That's it. That's the tweet.
Dear
#TwitterFam
- sorry to be MIA - in a stressful turn of events, both parents (despite vaccination and precautions) contracted
#COVID19
in Pakistan and needed hospitalization. Mom getting better. Dad is in the ICU and progress is slow. Please keep my family in your prayers/1
Dear patient, I carefully reviewed all the cells in your peripheral blood smear to make sure you don’t have leukemia. You’ll never meet me, but I care about you deeply.
#IamYourPathologist
Hey my patient, I spent over an hour doing xrays trying to find your tiny biopsy clip. You’ll never meet me, but I care about you deeply. I’m your pathologist.
As we mourn him now,
#COVID19
has plagued our interactions. Loved ones cry without hugging and meet who shaking hands.
Grief sans physical touch is a whole different world/4
Honored to be the recipient of one of
@Pathologists
Meritorious Service Awards, the Resident Advocate Award 2020 - My
@loyolapathology
residents humored me with this celebratory photoshoot yesterday - Working with (and for) them is a privilege and honor
#pathology
#cap20virtual
Tributes coming in from around the world speak of his generosity, kindness and selflessness. My family witnessed this our whole lives. He was our hero.
Since he was vaccinated and careful, I thought he wouldn’t get infected. And then when he did, I thought he would recover/2
I was lucky that the ICU here in Pakistan allowed me to stay with him for long periods of time. Even though I was here,
#COVID19
stripped me of my right to touch him and while he knew I was there, he saw me through masks and shields/3
Congratulations to my better-half, Dr. Mirza (
@sarahanifmirza
) for bagging the ‘Teaching Attending of the Year’ Award 2023! Celebrating all she does for
@RushPulmCC
@RushMedical
-
Congrats to all the graduating PCCM fellows! Its always an honor to host your graduation 🎉🎉…
My advice to all
#medstudents
and
#tweeple
posting
#pathology
cases
1. Don't use very current/ongoing cases
2. Unless absolutely needed, don't use exact age
3. No specific clinical history (unless absolutely necessary)
4. Think twice before posting a very (very) rare case
.
@jvn
- so excited!
Jonathan, have you ever wondered where diagnoses come from?

To say that I am incredibly honored, would be an understatement. This day,

and

the the President’s award from ASCP at the 100th anniversary celebration! Congratulations!
Ever wondered why
#reticulocytes
are blue-gray on the Wright smear? Residual RNA in the cytoplasm causes this color! Referred to as polychromatophilic red cells, they are 'closer' to having had a nucleus and residual RNA (which stains blue!)

Our family has two loved ones with ‘comorbidities’ - my dad who died this summer due to
#COVID19
(despite vaccination) due to complications of underlying heart disease.
We became the statistic.
So today, as youngest (6) (who is immune suppressed) got her shot, is a great day!
25 yrs ago, I lost my beloved grandmother to breast cancer. Her life played a huge role in shaping the human & physician I am today
Yesterday, I gave an "update" in breast cancer diagnostics talk in a session chaired by HER original oncologist
#18thSKCS
I hope I did her proud
Grading finals and one of my students called it ‘keratin swirls’ - I propose we henceforth adopt this name. I much prefer this ice-cream-flavor-esque terminology 😂😂
More in line with our naming by food obsession

Today is a big day. The amazing
@kmirza

Third jab ✅
Thinking of and honoring my father, who didn’t get the option of an mRNA vaccine (and was vaccinated with something less efficacious) and succumbed to this horrible disease.

11 years ago, to the day (3/15/10), I got this happy news 👇🏽 - it was the end of a long journey with lots of ups and many many downs.
I had previously matched but had lost a residency position due to ridiculous visa issues and for years I had felt dejected/1
#PathMatch21
Sharing a proud moment with my Twitter fam - What started as files on my desktop in 2018, is now a fully NAACLS accredited program!!

announcing it 🥲🥰
Had 5 calls (37 apps in ‘05)
Matched & had contract rescinded in July due to a 1 week visa delay (yes you read that right)
Did a PhD and reapplied with only 3 interviews in ‘10 (geographic restrictions) - thanks
@UChicagoPath
for training this

I submitted my

We always joked that he never remembered our birthdays, but it's likely Sep 21 (his firstborn kid) was a special day for Abu
As I embark on enduring yearly milestones without him, I'm grateful for the 40 birthdays I had with him around
He lives on through his family

Maybe if we had marketed the mRNA vaccines as ‘protein creating magical potions of protection’ and sold them in the essential oils section, things would be different? 🤔
I jest to camouflage the immense (anger and) frustration I hold within.
👏🏽 get 👏🏽 vaccinated 👏🏽 NOW!
What an exciting time for
