Míle Buíochas!
Hate all the judgy comments. It's child benefit day. Penneys sell cheap clothes that can't be bought online. 10 years ago I might well have been in that queue at 4.30am before my husband went to work at 6am so I wouldn't have to bring my toddlers with me. Stop judging people!
The first shoppers passing through the reopened doors at Penneys on Mary St in Dublin at 6:42 this morning. Some said they’d been queuing since 4:30am. The number one item on their lists - pyjamas.

Almost everyone I know is shattered. Counting down the days until they finish up work for Christmas (which might be 2 days or 2 weeks leave). I wonder what all this producing/consuming/meeting deadlines/pushing through exhaustion is for. There must be a better way of living.
I can't be in Bray this morning so I've lit a candle for Sinéad O'Connor while I quietly listen to her music.
Among a pile of books in my friend's kitchen is a book of poetry. I'd never read 'Nuala' by Brendan Kennelly before but it feels like it's for Sinéad🩵
Rest in peace.
Have just submitted my very first short story. No doubt I'll read it back in a month or year's time and wonder how I thought it was ready but tonight I'm proud of myself for trying something new. Time for a cuppa.
Grief is a funny thing..my dad died almost 11 years ago yet out of the blue yesterday I was hit by a wave of sadness when I exchanged hellos & smiles with an old man in St Anne's Park..'every old man I see reminds me of my father'. It's his birthday today..he would have been 90💚
Getting some tests done this morning and feeling a bit nervous and a tiny bit hopeful it might provide some answers. If you could please send good vibes my way. I'm taking the sunshine as a positive sign. And either way I get to have birthday cake later with my pal😊

A VERY Happy Friday Post😊
My copies of TRACES have arrived from the printers!
It's a collection of my writing over the last few years - 27 poems, 4 articles about illness/grief/beauty myth published in Irish Independent and 4 radio essays
@RTESunMisc
about music & friendship🩵
Good News Tweet: I just found out that my poem 'Precious Cargo' has been shortlisted for the Anthony Cronin International Poetry Award

If you want to immerse yourself in the music of Sinéad O'Connor listen back to last night's
@johncreedon
programme
@RTERadio1
- over 2 hours of her glorious music. A wonderful tribute to her and her exceptional talent.
I'll never forget Sinéad making time at the Irish Book Awards in 2018 to have a quiet drink with me where she encouraged me to start sending my work out. And she has done that for many writers. This collection exists because of people like her supporting me along the way❤️
For years, through her work with
@dubcilib
and
@1dublin1book
,
@JackieLynam
has been lifting up the work of other writers. Finally, she has published her own book, TRACES, a collection of poems and non-fiction. Congrats Jackie. ✨
Made it to 49! What a privilege😊
Bought myself new boots to celebrate and my daughter bought me a Cad é an scéal? mug❤
Feel like I've become my truest self in my 40s..let's see what this year brings...

Big night tomorrow with my National Concert Hall debut* (!) so got my hair blow dried - my lovely hairdresser joked that I'll have to sit up in bed all night😁 She's been doing my hair for years & refused payment, said she wanted to do it as a present to wish me luck 😍

If you're worried about being vocal on social media about voting Yes please keep doing it. I got unexpected message from a loved one in tears watching the PK show because she had an abortion that she hasn't spoke about..she reached out cos she knew I'd understand

My daughter waited up til 1am until I had gone to bed then left this lovely birthday surprise for me on the kitchen table💕💕 Captured all my dodgy haircuts and tired Mammy looks over the years😁
• Turn on heating, washing machine, kettle and radio
• Ring the Mammy to tell her my Hothouse Flowers piece is on this morning
• Contemplate waking the teenagers

to ask them to do an interview for my school magazine! Dodgy 1991 perm photos included😂
I love that my kids' secondary school give out merit awards for things other than subjects. They've never won awards for maths or English but today my daughter was awarded a merit award for integrity and a few years ago my son got one for kindness. The important stuff.
I have an essay on
@RTESunMisc
tomorrow morning about going to The Commitments premiere with my pal Andrea in the Savoy cinema, Sept 1991 (30 years ago!!) It's also a love letter to my Mam💜
Míle buíochas to producer Sarah Binchy🙏

@RTERadio1
I rarely get the bus but am smiling this morning listening to the friendly bus driver on the 39 being kind and courteous to all the passengers. I offered to pay for 2 tourists who didn't have enough change but he said don't worry I won't see them stuck🧡
Nice people of twitter: my daughter had the great idea that we'd visit all the counties of Ireland over the next 16 months. Went to Hill of Tara in Meath today & Ballymoney beach in Wexford last week. Looking for suggestions for free/cheap day trips in Leinster PLEASE😁
RT?
This time last year I was in tears worrying about my Mam spending Easter on her own, terrified she'd get Covid and we wouldn't get to spend time with her - which sadly many families experienced. This morning she got her 2nd vaccine dose and I am so relieved & very grateful❤
A dream come true...today I recorded an essay I wrote for
@sundaymiscellany
@RTERadio1
Thanks to Sarah Binchy for making it such a lovely experience. And thanks to
@joeliveline
for showing me the door!! (my sense of direction is brutal)
Got good news about one of my poems this evening - it will be published next month in an anthology. I'm really pleased this one in particular has found a home. (It's about my darling Mam 💙)
I loved everything about Hungry by
@gracedent
but this sentence about her dad's dementia really struck a chord with me
'Every day of this madness is conducted in a haze of grief, but ambiguous grief, as you're bereaved of the person you love while babysitting their shell'
My 10 year old daughter was really excited going into school this morning because she was going to see her book buddy Ethan. He's a senior infant kid that she's paired with once a week. Lovely initiative to promote reading💙📚💙
Last day of being 47...things I learned this year:
Pink docs are good
Talking and writing about body shame takes away its power
Parenting is a life long lesson
Spending time on my own is wonderful
I still like people and hugs a lot
My TBR pile has grown again!
Loving the library-themed 3D Artwork💙📚💙 at Henry St/Liffey Street
If you're in the area come down and have a look

Lose Yourself in the library 😍
There was so much in More Than a Woman by
@caitlinmoran
that resonated with me but this in particular 🙌 'People don't need you to be beautiful..once you realise you are the beholder...then the whole power structure of beauty dissolves because: you decide what beautiful is.'
I received lots of encouraging writing news this weekend including finding out that two of my poems have been longlisted for a competition!! Those poems had been previously submitted to journals and not selected for publication, so the message is don't give up!

Called over to see my Mam to give her a copy of TRACES which is dedicated to her. She has been my cheerleader for the last 50 years❤️
Wardrobe/book cover co-ordination purely coincidental 😁
@ThatKerryHudson
When I was trying and failing to breastfeed my baby son, the paediatrician saw how distraught I was and he kindly said it was ok if I needed to top him up with formula, that he would be OK. I nearly cried with relief. Up to that 'breast is best' was being pushed from every angle.
Oh what a night❤️
I had the most wonderful launch of my debut collection Traces last night

Thanks to

Will never stop finding this exciting!! Over at RTE to record a piece I wrote for

and catching snippets of the orchestra practising while I wait💙
This candle is lit for all of us needing good wishes ✨️
I've a hospital appointment - not expecting big news, good or bad (but more tests, no doubt😞) Last time I saw this consultant I left in tears but it prompted a big re-think of my work/life balance so that's a positive!
Happy Friday😊
This weekend, I'm proofing my collection Traces: Poems and Essays before it goes to print. Reflections on the body, illness, grief, friendship, music and family, which I'm self-publishing in Oct.

Big week in my house:
My daughter finishes secondary school and it's my last week
@DublinCityofLit
It's been a wonderful life-changing decade for me. As my mam says, I fell on my feet when I was assigned there! Giving thanks for the work, my colleagues & the people I've met 🙏💙
Today I got good news about a writing submission as well as a nicely worded rejection email (although I tend to call them 'not successful this time' emails) I'm proud of myself for having the courage to submit regardless of the outcome
#keepwriting
Another writing rejection yesterday - last one this year!
Submitted to 35 places in 2022 and had:
3 poems published in print
2 pieces broadcast on radio
1 article (commissioned) published in a national newspaper.
Grateful to ALL the editors who took the time to read my words🙏💜
@JaneCaseyAuthor
That's shocking, Jane. I'm working in a public library in Dublin and see firsthand how important the public library is to the community. We are lucky that public libraries are valued and properly resourced in Ireland.
After quite a few rejection emails this year, I'm chuffed my poem 'September Skies' will be published by
@martellojournal
in their 4th issue! Looking forward to reading all the other pieces - all on the theme of Sanctuary.

21 years ago.
It lashed rain.
I smiled all day, kicked off my high heels at 10pm and danced barefoot.
We both regularly say how lucky we are that we have each other.
I don't really write 'love' poems but this one Timing was published by North West Words in 2018
'Congratulations on officially being our bestselling poetry book for 2023!'
Thank you
@alanhannasbooks
for the BEST email ever! 😭
This time last year I was doubting my decision to self-publish my writing. No idea what great things lay ahead for Traces🩵
Big Day: I've the candle lit. My lovely hairdresser has insisted on calling to my house on her way to work to do my hair (and she refuses to let me pay her)😍
Must not forget to feed the birds!
My article about my darling Dad Tommy and our family's experience of Alzheimer's disease is in today's Irish Independent.
It might be of help to those in a similar situation.

Have my last scheduled hospital appointment of the year today. Health wise it's been a tough year. 34 medical appointments. I'm very aware how lucky I am that nothing sinister was detected (though chronic illness is exhausting). And I am hopeful that 2024 will be better✨️
So thrilled that my poem 'Shameless' is published in the latest edition of
@HonestUlsterman
It was the first poem I wrote and it's lovely to have found a home for it alongside other great writers!
Around this time 17 years ago we brought our 3-day-old baby daughter home from the Rotunda Hospital. A kind garda let my husband drive through the blocked-off street; we drove home at the same speed of one of the St Patrick's Day parade floats with our precious cargo on board!
Any other kids of the money-tight 80s have a hang up about spending money on certain things?
For me it's taxis. I'd get trains/buses/walk for miles rather than allowing myself a flaithulach daytime taxi.
(Tweet prompted by spending €40 to get to a hospital appointment today)
Would normally be in Kilkenny at Cat Laughs Festival celebrating 25 years with this fella❤ He plucked up the courage to invite me to the very first Cat Laughs in 1995 & on the Bank holiday Monday I nervously said 'so, are we going out or what?' Thankfully he said yes😂
A lot of poems in newspapers & journals went over my head so I had to dig deep to resist the idea that my poems were crap. Tonight I'll attend Anthony Cronin International Poetry Award ceremony as a shortlisted poet😊Am so grateful to many friends who encouraged me💙

1st September ❤
10 years ago in Sep 2012, I was incredibly lucky to be assigned to

office. After being at home with 3 kids for almost 4 years, I was v nervous but excited. By the end of the first week my husband said 'you're back'...the sparkle had returned 🌟
Great to chat

Very surreal and wonderful to see posts about my book. I thought it would be scary to put my work (which covers very personal topics) out into the world but it's actually freeing to allow yourself to be vulnerable.

In the never-ending saga of my banjaxed body, I had an unexpected fall on Thursday. Thankfully, nothing broken, just a bit battered and bruised. Very taken this morning with my buttercup chin! Sounds like a title for a poem...🤔
Spotted this ring in Galway and was immediately drawn to the colour💙
Treated myself out of money I got for writing an article. It wasn't expensive but I love it, a reminder to push through the fear

Time to switch off productivity mode, turn down the noise, and tune into a slower rhythm for the next few months.
I'm going to tip toe out of here for a while to give my brain a break, but I'll be quietly lighting the candles for anyone who needs good wishes.
Tóg go bog é.
Having a rare midweek drink to mark my daughter's birthday and to remember the amazing midwives Pauline and Deirdre who helped me through a difficult pregnancy and delivery 13 years ago. Grateful to all the brilliant women who got me through a very tough couple of years💙
Looking through old photos for a thing and wondering again why we never see the beauty in ourselves only the faults. This one is from 20 years ago and I wish I could have injected some self confidence into my younger self.
Seeing my poem published in Washing Windows Too anthology and getting to read at poetry events in Dublin, Strokestown & Belfast has been wonderful. Thanks Alan for giving myself and lots of other unpublished poets these opportunities to share our work🙏

have arrived from Canada! Thrilled to see my poem Good Friday in print. Written in a feverish frenzy and submitted the next day.
It's about having Covid and finding kindness and support online - the friendly words that keep us going.
Heading to Wexford later to stay in a cottage near the beach. The last time we stayed there was New Year 2018 when I wrote the poem Traces which to my surprise & delight was published
@BangorLiterary
My very first published poem! Had no idea that week what good things lay ahead..
Ghost Mountain 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟
@MumblinDeafRo
has managed in 281 pages to capture what makes us human - the beauty, ugliness, sorrow and tenderness. My heart was broken into shards. The characters are so authentic, their loves, losses, disappointments and sadness so real. Stunning.

On Friday I start 5 months unpaid leave to focus on my health & well being, and on my family. It was a big decision to prioritise myself instead of pushing on but sometimes we need to give ourselves permission to stop.
Friday afternoon shenanigans in Galway...cocktails and an open fire..I'm in heaven! They must have clocked our age on the way in cos the playlist is all 90s indie! Is it too early to start 💃
This is my new reading pile❤ I read mostly books by Irish authors so I'm excited to concentrate on international fiction - the 2020
