I genuinely don’t understand why more teams don’t try to follow the example of Seattle and Pittsburgh and hire coaches to be leaders and culture-builders. Imagine thinking that, say, Dan Quinn, after building a great defense in Dallas, is ready to be a head coach again.

1. The course is more open than I expected, and exposed to the wind at high points. Winds have been really gusty, and tricky to judge. In some ways it reminds me of a links course at times more than a traditional country club style track. I got more Shinnecock than Merion vibes.

3. The rough, while not as awful as the videos make it out to be, is very deep in certain areas, and unpredictable. Guys were trying all kinds of shots out of the greenside rough, including bunker-like shots. I watched Hovland fail to get out of the rough on three straight tries.

5. It seems like missing in the wrong spot greenside may be a bigger penalty than missing the fairway. Bunkers are definitely the place to miss in most cases. Leaving the ball below the hole where possible will be critical.

9. While there’s fescue and rocks, I don’t see a lot of that coming into play, and there’s almost no water in play at all. There won’t be many penalty strokes, with most dropped shots coming just from the primary cut of rough. It’ll be tough, but not the British open.

I watched a lot of guys miss putts they normally wouldn’t, and often leave themselves a healthy putt coming back. Adam Scott was grinding on the putting green and missing at least 25% of his 4 footers.

2. The Par 5 hole No. 8 is going to be fun. Huge slope in front of the green, and anything on the front of the green will roll back to the base, 30 yards away. I saw Joel Dahmen hit a few in a row that came right back to his feet.

7. Good feel for speed on these greens is so crucial; while they’re tiny, the slope and quickness means two putts will still be really difficult. There just aren’t many flat places on these greens, let alone flat greens.

4. The rough off the fairways doesn’t seem quite as bad, and there’s a first cut to protect players from the thick stuff on most holes. Big misses may get a reprieve since there’s a lot of deep stuff that has already been trampled down.

You’ll see countless shots from the base of the hill, as a lot of guys going for green in 2 will end up down here, and some guys who lay up may even even end up down here if they aren’t precise with their wedge shot.

6. My biggest takeaway has been the greens- they are slippery, and some of the hole locations guys are practicing for are pretty tucked. Being short sided is going to be an adventure, and I think you could see some guys looking very silly on and around these greens.

First of all, playing with a neutral site putter could have an outsized effect on Rufus, as he putts with a Scotty Cameron blade with a “fatso” 5.0 super stroke grip. This is because I put it on his putter while he was living abroad, and he has been too lazy to take it off.

I don’t think you need to be as long as people think on this course- accuracy way more important. On the front nine guys can hit less than driver on 3,5,7,9. Back nine a little longer, but you don’t need to be super long, just long enough.
