I want to say something about all those "Progressive Christians aren't proper Christians, aren't saved etc." Tweets.
I see these a fair bit.
When U post these, U draw the circle smaller.
Consequence - U reduce the chance that people like me, currently close by, will step inside.
If you've also had a tough year (+so many of us have) then here's a reminder of what patient, sustained, day-to-day small actions of love can achieve.

While we're here perhaps you can help me Pastor Brandon. I expect some might see me as being pretty close2 the boundary between atheism and Progressive Christianity. This thread summarises a little of where I am at. What would you advise I do?

Very surprised to wake up +find how many interactions - both Replies +Quotes - the above post has had. It's difficult to keep up with them all in detail (so apologies if I've missed yours), but it looks like there's a few distinct patterns in people's responses so far. Listening.

I don't hate Christians. Far from it. I'm an active and committed member of a Church with its roots in radical non-conformist Christianity. I share community with, and worship alongside Christian Quakers:

Hi Noelle. Quakerism of course has its historic roots in radical non-conformist Christianity +even 2day a great many Friends (especially worldwide) wud still identify as Christians, but it's certainly not a requirement. Some of us R non-theist:
If, like me, you're waking feeling shocked, scared and desolate about a grim future, I only have one suggestion:
On dark days like today find someone who needs your love, compassion, help and kindness - and get to work.
Then the same tomorrow, and the next day, and the next...
For those less familiar with the nuances of Quaker-speak, the full text of this statement is how Quakers convey being very cross indeed about something, but in a 100% peaceful and loving way of course. (Seriously, we're not happy about this!)
My 95 year old Nana died this morning in nursing home on Merseyside. I was only able2 visit once in the whole pandemic, last week, when it was clear the end was near. She +my Grandad raised me from infancy until age 7, when my parents were unable.

Our family has been having a tough time for quite a while now. And frankly so have I. Taking a couple of hours for myself this morning, starting with this.
Christ whipped the money changers. Should we whip political vandals who topple statues, invade government buildings, deface artworks, and block traffic? “Reconsidering corporal punishment,” over at the blog:
I'm a secularist, so long term I don't think there should be 26 Bishops in the House of Lords as of right.
But as long as they are there, this sort of intervention is *exactly* what their role is Nile.
(+There are many British people who feel like this, so on this he speaks4 me.)
Outrageous intervention by
@JustinWelby
Hugely out of touch with the British people. It is not his role to lecture the British Government on immigration policy.
Imagine a Christian denomination that *only ordained women*.
Or that did ordain men, but people said "they're not real priests though".
Would it make you feel uncomfortable? Or that the Church was missing out on the gifts +service of an entire group of people?
Yea, that feeling.
Easter greetings to all my Christian friends here on Twitter. I am grateful for your patience, perspectives and insights in our conversations over the last year. I look forward to our continued dialogue, and to learning from each other. Peace to you and yours.
The Tweet is now deleted, and rightly so, but I'd specifically ask people including

to not use the word "autistic" as an insult. Just don't. Please.

. Lurking @ the edge of Christianity, just some pesky residual atheism getting in the way.
But what was this week's pitch?
Safeguarding crisis, tipping in2 LLF standoff, "but that woman has tattoos!" etc.
Yea, not minded2 jump in.
So, in summary (see the thread), if reason/evidence doesn't work, or they don't go for the whole "love your neighbour" thing, then just go big on the *eternal torture*?
Apparently that'll get them. 🙄
Someone invited him to a church service and the preacher preached about hell and eternal judgment. It scared the crap out of him and he surrendered to Christ at that moment.
Like, he legit got saved. Radical, immediate conversion. 5/10
OK, deep breath.
A short but v.personal thread coming.
This has been prompted by a particularly hateful Tweet from Friday, that some of U may have seen being much discussed, +I've been wrestling with since.
(I'm not going2 link2 it here, but you'll B able2work it out from below.)
Still thinking about that post yesterday by a Synod member expressing concern that 99% of this year's cohort of new CofE ordinands were "woke".
Surely having clergy who are aware of issues of inequality, exclusion and injustice, and are keen to address them, is a *good* thing?
After decades not recognising/understanding many things about myself (I'm nearly 50),I'm now in early stages of seeking ASC assessment+possible diagnosis. I know well finding certain situations+stimuli overwhelming+being unable2mask it. I stand with Greta.

Indeed. Quakers have been doing things that way 4a long time. It always irks me if e.g. online forms don't allow me 2skip those; I'll always omit them if I can. More on this here (not my writing, but very much feel the same way):
The single most repeated word in this speech is "fight".
Fight. Fight. Fight.
Imagine replacing that underlying attitude with care, compassion, cooperate, collaborate, community etc.
You'd have something very different.
I cannot stop watching this. It’s one of the most peculiar things I’ve ever seen, which given the venue, is really saying something. Get to the end (if you can).

They settled on giving me a Terry's Chocolate Orange some years ago now. I think we all appreciate the lack of decision making and complete predictability that this provides.
Given the state of everything right now, it feels like it'd save a lot of time if I did a single all-purpose Tweet confirming I'm against all the bad things (let's all do less of those), +in favour of all the good things (let's all do more of those). Consider this that Tweet.🕊️♥️
Not sure how I'm going2feel after sending this - if it'll B relief or regret. But right now it feels like a necessary step. Not only 2help me+my family explore all this more, but as a tiny thing I can do 2help fight back against the ignorant bullies attempting2 stigmatise. Peace.

This might read like hyperbole, but it isn't. Pete is naming one of the really exhausting aspects - the experience of continuous low-level agitation (or medium/high-level, depending on the current social +sensory load etc.). It's a constant, sapping grind.
My recent decision to finally seek assessment has meant I am becoming more aware of this topic being discussed on Twitter. What accounts might I follow to begin to more fully understand this conversation?

"I swear that I will pay true allegiance to Your Majesty, +to your heirs +successors according to law. So help me God."
I can't do this.
1) I'm a Quaker. We don't swear oaths, 4 religious reasons.
2) I'm an atheist (the "so help me God" bit).
3) Loyalty is earned, not promised.
I'm a secularist, but if we're going to have 26 Bishops (including
@BishopSarahM
) siting as of right in the Lords, this is absolutely the kind of thing I want them to be doing...
The Carpenter that Jacob is talking about had a lot 2say about helping the poor, the sick, the hungry, needy, as well as strangers +the marginalised. Also about the humble, +those seeking righteousness. (There was plenty about the greedy +rich too, but they did not fare so well.)

Good. "Smacking" = a euphemism for hitting. Violence against children is unacceptable in any form, in any circumstance. Those who use it are modeling aggression +violence, and tacitly endorsing it as a behaviour children will likely end up emulating.

I'm not an Anglican, or even a Christian, but I have a diverse range of follows so there are lots of people in my timeline who are, and who have been very hurt by this pastoral statement. Sending them solidarity and support.
As a non-theist Quaker (yes, that's a thing), I have from time to time been asked (always by non-Quakers) about what I am actually doing in a "meeting for worship". This Tweet hints at just one possible answer...
Quaker worship, in my experience, is not about giving compliments or credit or allegiance or even thanks to God but about listening, with others, for what God/Love is inviting us to notice, to do, to become—and then responding.
If like me you've spent the last week head in hands as people get all agitated about statues in Iowa, the blessing of same sex couples, or that there are *gasp* women priests - just remember that there are many many followers of the Carpenter who follow Him like this instead:
Today! Here goes living in church for 10 days running a night (and day) shelter. Welcoming Jesus in the shape of our homeless guests is going to be an amazing Christmas privilege 🙌 Happy nearly Christmas everyone 😊 Every day's an opportunity 🙏 Yes, I got pillow chocs 😂 <><
Good morning and greetings to all my Christian friends here on Twitter this Easter Sunday. Love and Light to you all, and to those you love. Stay safe, look after yourselves, and each other. Peace be with you.
Without the two of them stepping in to look after me in their mid-40s (when two of their three children had already left home, and the last was soon to), and taking on parenting once again, my life would have been very very different. I am always and forever so grateful to them.
From 8am I'll be off Twitter for a full week. Trying to recalibrate our 11year old's use of her tablet device by going 7days without it, so she can rediscover other forms of distraction and entertainment. To support her, I'm giving up my phone in solidarity. Stay safe all. Peace.
Lengthy coverage of *the* story of the week on

Twitter. Lots of Twitter friends who've been active in the conversation in recent days are quoted. Voices here can indeed make it through into mainstream media coverage.
I'm currently doing regular Yoga on the advice of my Physiotherapist, as part of a multi-aspect treatment programme for chronic back pain (that's lasted over 14mths now).
I'm not a Christian, but if I was, I struggle to understand why the Carpenter would have a problem with that.
Thanks to Benjamin for this thread.
Messages like this are an important counterpoint to some far less helpful (and indeed sometimes incredibly irresponsible and damaging) messages about mental health and mental illness that you can sometimes see in some faith circles.
A reminder:
Your anxiety is not a sin.
Your depression is not a sin.
Your PTSD is not a sin.
What is sinful is when someone adds to your trauma by telling you that your anxiety, depression, and/or PTSD reveals a lack of faith in God.
Haven't Tweeted about it much, but tomorrow is start of 5th month of continuous significant chronic back pain. It's really getting in the way of day2day life, +it's hard2stay positive when it's with you *every waking moment* +at night. +It's unclear how long this might go on4 😞
"One of the unexpected things I have learnt in my life as a Quaker is that religion is basically about relationships between people. This was an unexpected discovery, because I had been brought up 2 believe that religion was essentially about our relationship with God." QF&P10.20
Every single Tweet about 30th anniversary of ordination of women in CofE has a collection of replies from people who are still exceedingly agitated by it *3 decades* later 🙄.
Whatever happens next with LLF/PL&F etc., will some some people be the same about that in another 30yrs?
