I moved to Baghdad two years ago and have witnessed first hand the issues and uphill struggles we face. @Pontifex ’s visit will not fix our problems for us, nor is it expected to, but it has brought us happiness, inspiration and a renewed sense of hope.

In every map and aerial photo of Baghdad, you can see how curved the Tigris River is. For that reason, Baghdad is nicknamed “Al-Zawraa”, which can mean the curved.

Remember this guy who ran his own campaign in Najaf? 15,404 votes in Najaf - District 1. That’s the highest a single candidate got in Najaf. An academic with expertise in international law, he was seen in protest squares in Najaf in 2019.

The two main demands behind protests over the years are better services and public sector employment. The Iraqi state cannot begin to reform itself and provide adequate services if the public sector continues to grow at its current rate. It is neither productive nor sustainable.

Iraqi resilience & generosity throughout the COVID-19 pandemic has really shown. There was never any panic buying in bulk in supermarkets & charity campaigns across all provinces to help the families financially affected by the curfew has been inspiring & incredible.

Ahmed Radhi was part of the 1986 Iraqi World Cup squad, scoring Iraq’s loan goal against Belgium. More impressive is the fact it is the only team to make it to the World Cup playing all qualifying matches on foreign soil (due to Iran-Iraq War).

Muqtada Al-Sadr calling for new elections is not revolutionary, despite his claims. Sadr is merely upset that no one ran after him once his MPs resigned, as they did earlier when he threatened to not take part in elections. He has been lashing out since, seeking attention.

If the Prime Minister truly wanted to resign today, he would have done so by submitting his resignation to the President. Instead the Prime Minister has just sent a letter to parliament to hold an impeachment vote, keeping him in power until that takes place.

I always love visiting the Erbil Citadel, the oldest continuously inhabited site in the world. Erbil (Arba’elu) - an ancient Assyrian capital & a center for early Christianity. Now the capital of Iraqi Kurdistan. #Iraq

The Council of Ministers decided that October 3 will be celebrated as Iraq’s National Day. October 3, 1932 is the day in which the Kingdom of Iraq was granted independence from the British.
