Personal trifecta: my reviews are in three print sections this weekend: NYTBR (Makkai), Boston Globe (Rivera Garza), and Minneapolis Star Tribune (Freeman). Thanks, as always, to my awesome editors!

Also, Southern Republicans will come home for a pedophile if he increases the odds of overturning Roe v. Wade. This election is about abortion, full stop.
When I tried to acquire "House of Leaves" my boss told me that I didn't know the difference between a "big" book (sales) and a "tiny" one. She authorized me to bid $7500 but wouldn't go to $10K to close the deal.
What’s the most unhinged thing an editor’s said to you?
Me: wrote a piece for a local interest website parodying a well-known regional retailer’s radio commercials. Editor said the commercial has to be real or the retailer has to be fake, otherwise the comedy ‘doesn’t work’
@ehwilson3
@chrislhayes
Agree. This is a trial balloon to gauge the blowback. If the response is muted then the official overturn of Roe will go forward, with ACB writing the majority opinion.

My liberal Zionist friends are parroting this line: that if Netanyahu were to vanish today we'd have a 2-state solution tomorrow (or next week or next month or something). When I argue that Netanyahuism preceded Netanyahu just as surely as Trumpism preceded Trump, they shrug.
I never met Gabe Hudson IRL, but we followed each other on social media and emailed now and again. He was a force of good for literature and a light in the world. Stunned by the news of his passing. RIP.
Charles Portis married New Journalism techniques with old-fashioned Southern storytelling; his novels are purgatorial picaresques. Here's my piece on his "Collected Works" for
@TheAtlantic
. Many thanks to Maya Chung and
@galbeckerman
for the opportunity.
Huge congrats to
@Morgan_J_Talty
on winning
@bookcritics
' Leonard Prize for his stunning début, "Night of the Living Rez." Re-upping
@OprahDaily
's exclusive excerpt from last year:
As the parent of a severely disabled teenager who died last year, I'm thrilled out of my gourd. And may the publishing industry follow suit in finally, finally, finally bringing disabled writers and critics to the fore. It certainly hasn't been a priority.
"This is dedicated to the deaf community, the CODA community and the disabled community. This is our moment," Troy Kotsur says in his
#Oscar
acceptance speech.
@sdbaral
No. But rolling lockdowns would flatten hospitalization curves and help our clinicians and first responders to get through Omicron. One tool to consider as many hospitals are on the brink.
Thrilled to review
@Mikel_Jollett
's "Hollywood Park" for
@oprahmagazine
, destined to be one of THE most acclaimed memoirs of 2020 and perfect quarantine reading.
Fiction lovers: jump on
@MichaelCrummey
's "The Adversary," a reimagining of the Cain and Abel story and a feat of language. No lie: he's one of our greatest stylists. Out next week from
@doubledaybooks
. Here's my rave review for
@StribGoingOut
:
@AmericanGwyn
Yep. Reminds me of Hal Lindsey, Thief in the Night & all the Endtimes theology I was steeped in as a child. I recall an Archie comic book that was Revelation in disguise, with Archie, Jughead, Betty, and Veronica joining John in a time vortex, watching the Tribulation play out.
The novel that buoyed me through many dark moments in 2021. Thanks to
@leighhaber
and
@OprahDaily
for the opportunity to write about Maggie O'Farrell's magnificent "Hamnet."
Thread: The gift-giving season kicks in this week, and I recommend y’all throw some $$$ at quality literary fiction and nonfiction for those bibliophiles in your life. Here’s my list of 25 favorite books, sans authors I haven’t read (Catherine Lacey, James McBride, et. al./1

How do we persuade the professional classes to abandon the "girls are good, boys are bad, no exceptions" narrative? Seems almost insurmountable.
Mariana Enriquez = badass genius. Here's my

Greenlamd sharks just hitting puberty were born when Laura Ingalls Wilder was living in the little house in the Big Woods OMFG.

Many of us have been doing exactly this for decades. When I was in college, back in the last Ice Age, I worked on sexual-assault prevention,"date rape" in fraternities, self-defense seminars, etc. Plenty of men have made positive contributions for years. Pllease don't stereotype.
@Tyler_A_Harper
What do you make of high-school STEMification? At my son's university the humanities majors are all legacies and rich kids unburdened by debt. (He's studying public policy.) Are we creating a majors-caste system rooted in public-school curricula?
@ThePlumLineGS
@ClintSmithIII
Most libs don't contest 2nd Amendment but believe in sensible regulations: background checks, assault-weapons ban. Many gun-owners agree.
Ye devotees of short stories: don't miss George Saunders's "Liberation Day," his first collection since "Tenth of December," out Tuesday from

Just over a month to the US publication of this mindblowing, genrebending masterpiece: Mariana Enriquez's "Our Share of Night," brilliantly translated by
