This morning I sewed this scrub cap. This afternoon I wore it while I sewed skin following a cholecystectomy (gallbladder surgery).

A little late, but happy

Yes, I am a DO student doing my clinical rotations at a very rural community hospital, but yesterday I put in a central line by myself from start to finish (with very close supervision, of course).

Today I scrubbed in to and held retractors for a six hour ortho case and never broke sterile field. Oh and I wore lead the whole time. Currently feel invincible 😍

S/o to the ortho I’m working with who introduced me to pts “this is Grace she’s a med student.” One immediately asked “what type of nursing” so he started saying “this is Grace, she is a med student about to become a doctor and will be starting general surgery this summer.” 🙌🏻
How’s my first sub-I going, you ask?
Well, yesterday I couldn’t find my stethoscope after a trauma and it was found on a helicopter. I have never been on a helicopter in my life. 😅
My favorite is when I preround on patients at 530 and they say “do you have a minute? I’d love you show you a picture of my dog.” 🥹
I ALWAYS HAVE A MOMENT FOR PET PICS
I've been out of college five years now and found out I matched into general surgery yesterday. Last night had a dream I missed an entire year of cross country practice and was still expected to compete at conference. Does it ever end 😅
Officially done with interviews for

!! If you need me, I will be hibernating until match day.
(just kidding I still have to go to work)
If I could describe residency in one word, it would be “humbling.”
Humbling in terms of how little I know at this stage, but also so overwhelmingly humbling to realize the difference even us interns can make in the lives of our patients.
Had a particularly challenging weekend call yesterday, but hit my 250th case (end of pgy 2 min) just shy of 9 months into pgy 1. Cases included a(nother) skin-to-skin appy and emergent repair of actively expanding 10cm pseudoaneurysm!
Just got this text from my very first letter writer:
“I am almost finished with your letter of recommendation. It is a Literary masterpiece, I mentioned your Nobel prize and Heisman Trophy”
Here’s hoping it’s impressive yet believable. 😂

Such a blast mentoring, teaching, and repping the
@ACOS_Residents
this weekend! Thanks so much for having me
@ACOS_MSS

@ACOSurgeons
@mahad_minhas
I made 7.50/hr as an ED scribe during my gap year 2018-2019 🙃 several of my friends there quit as soon as they got accepted to med school for better paying jobs
No words to accurately describe how much
@ACOS_MSS
&
@ACOSurgeons
has given me.
Countless opportunities, amazing mentorship, and some of my very best friends. Beyond honored to help lead this org as Vice Chair over the coming year.

@brittanyncuff
I went down to the OR after a day in peds clinic and when the surgeon let me scrub into an evening case, not one but TWO of the techs had already pulled me a gown and gloves 🥲
I am beyond proud to call you my classmate, college, life-long friend. You truly have the biggest heart (but not bad big like your future CHF patients) ❤️ this award could not have gone to anyone better.
Beyond honored to have received the Leonard Tow Humanism in Medicine Award by
@GoldFdtn
, an award that recognizes one graduating student who demonstrates clinical excellence, compassionate patient care and respect for patients, families and colleagues. Still a bit in shock. 🥹
Meet with the program director/chair or whoever else you think might help. Schedule this early on with their scheduler, and don’t schedule it for the last day in case of emergent cases. Don’t schedule for the first week. Have an elevator pitch ready. Why this program/specialty.
The bar gets set higher & higher each year! Jake and his team at

did an incredible job with the Spring

meeting. I can’t wait to see the amazing things the new team does 🎉👏🏻
Earlier on this sub-I, I got to go to all of a pt’s new breast cancer dx appts - surg, med onc, rad onc. Yesterday I got to help with her surgery then see her off as she went home. Such an incredible and special experience! 💕

Also reaching out to program leadership to see if a resident has a spare room. For safety purposes they often cannot advertise this but if you ask there may be opportunities
S/o to the resident who, on my first day in a new clinic, presented an A&P to the attending “Grace said xx and she was absolutely right.” Thank you, you kind soul. 😭🥰
@Drago_Kimberly
I have written to show writers multiple times on multiple different platforms (email, Instagram, Twitter) about introducing a DO character
Today I got mistaken for an attending and I wanted to weep with joy. This comes after getting mistaken for a HS student shadowing last week. I’d say I broke even 🤷🏻♀️

I’m so sorry that people are insanely foul :( medical school is ROUGH. Medical school during a pandemic is isolating and justifiably depressing. You are killing it ❤️
5/5 recommend a SO who randomly mails you your favorite book from your childhood when you’re stressing about Step 2/aways/ERAS
ps - if you want a prehistoric + female hero twist on a classic, Dinorella is your gal
Rotating in a rural community hospital definitely has its downfalls, but one of the perks was finishing Peds clinic at 5:08 today, dropping by the OR to say hi, then scrubbing in to an emergent case at 5:43 😌

Went to dinner with the OR staff last night. As I walked in everyone just stared. Someone finally said "Grace?" and then we all realized they had never seen me without a mask and bouffant 😭.
Away rotation / sub-I season is in full swing so here are some tips I felt helped me. Very applicable to
@ThoracicStudent
and
@ACOS_MSS
Just my two cents, others may have different takes
Summary of my first 48 hours on OBGYN:
omg I am NEVER having kids
~ eighteen minutes later ~
BABY FEVER ALL TIME HIGH
In the words of my wise friend
@stefanie_worwa
, “Birth is a beautiful and absolutely disgusting thing.”
@JordyGrewal
This happened to me today 😅 my second day on my first sub-I. I promise I’m not the dumbest sack of poo to ever walk the earth but I sure felt like it

Cold email! Politely explain who you are, your goals, say you’ll be in town and would love to say hello. I did this for a random trip where I didn’t do an away and used the same basic email when meeting PDs on my sub-Is
My partner is a pharmacist and has to work Saturday, so my entire family is loading up to go to his pharmacy to get their flu shots and boosters. My grandmas are too excited. I am so thankful 😌❤️

I used very little anki! I mostly did amboss Q related to the current class/subject. During dedicated I did UWorld and read amboss articles/related Q for subjects I kept missing.
Board stuff is overwhelming but find what works for you :)
Actually got all my Christmas and grocery shopping done in a timely fashion this year. Feeling almost as adult as the time I renewed my driver's license over lunch 😌
@ashtonsamos
I went ahead and cancelled if the offer I got was my top choice for those dates, bc I agree. Plus gives more time to accept another applicant
Twitter, I need your help. I stacked a ceramic bowl into another one while doing dishes and now they are stuck. How do you remove the smaller bowl without breaking both of them?
Why am I so invested? I’ve tried to fix this for 2 days, and I cannot give up now.
How’s my first sub-I going, you ask?
Well, yesterday I couldn’t find my stethoscope after a trauma and it was found on a helicopter. I have never been on a helicopter in my life. 😅
Peds attending “I’d like you to go see this next one on your own. He’s only three months so you can overpower him if you need to”
Spoiler: He was super chill. No overpowering necessary. Hehe
