Normalize pre-meds NOT doing "medical" volunteering in Africa. Most have no qualifications or skills. Do something good in your own community instead. Medical school admission is hypercompetive but this is not the way to stand out IMO. Med schools are complicit as well.

My classmate did not match. We were all baffled. He was so shocked he didn't even know what to do. School was basically worthless. I took him to lunch on Tuesday & gave him a bunch of ideas. He ended up scrambling into his number 1 program. Med schools suck at helping w soap.

The United States Medical Licensing Exam (USMLE) needs a major overhaul. Step 3 needs to be put to rest as day 1 is a repeat of Step 1 and day 2 is a repeat of Step 2 CK + an immensely better version of the now defunct Step 2 CS. Step 3 is a money grab. Plain and simple.
