Conjugated chiral polymers have been studied for >30 years. We show their huge chiroptical effects in films are via natural optical activity, not the structural chirality previously assumed. This opens up many applications in chiral organic electronics.

In February, my friend and long time collaborator Alasdair Campbell, Professor of Solid State Physics at Imperial College, sadly passed away. Our memorial piece was published today, which would have been his 60th birthday. .

Our chiral polymer films show propagation direction dependent circularly polarised (CP) electroluminescence! This theory work proposes charge carrier momentum and orbital angular momentum ultimately gives direction-dependent CP emission. 🤯 Preprint @arxiv

By inverting the device structure of a circularly polarised (CP) OLED we not only access much more efficient devices, but also invert the handedness of the CP light for a fixed absolute configuration of our chiral material!
