What to know about the IDF attack on activists this weekend:
1. The mission was water delivery, not even protest. The small settler outpost Avigayil is given 240 liters of water per day per person, while adjacent Palestinian village At-Tuwani gets 20.
This is what happens to Israeli activists who stand with Palestinians against the occupation. 65-year-old Eli from
@cfpeace
was hospitalised today after being assaulted by an IDF soldier in the South Hebron Hills. End the occupation.
And yet, since the Israeli election, we have heard nothing but silence from mainstream American Jewish organizations who have chosen not to call out the extreme far-right.
Join us in calling them out and calling for the release of
@Issaamro
. (8/8)
Somewhere in the South Hebron Hills are 12 Palestinian villages under immediate threat of expulsion. Extend brings people to meet activists here because we know that when people see occupation and injustice, they are moved to speak against them.
Thanks for joining us yesterday.
"Sukkot" means 'temporary shelters.'
The village we visited today, Umm al-Khair, is full of them. It's in Area C, where Palestinians can't get building permits, even for houses.
As we remember our days living in sukkot this week, we ask: why do we force them on Palestinians?
Issa lives in Hebron, a city in which the IDF regularly declares Palestinian homes military zones to punish activists.
Hebron is also the political home turf of the right-wing extremist Itamar Ben-Gvir, who won the third-most number of seats in last month's election. 2/8

Today, from

"The sad truth is that we are being held hostage by leaders who don’t have a real plan. The only thing they know how to do is bomb."
Issa is one of the most prolific and brilliant activists we know.
He has brought the reality of occupied Hebron to the world.
He has endured countless arrests, detentions, and now beatings.
Spread this far and wide.

This month, we took gap year students from

They toured occupied Hebron with

and met legendary activist
@Issaamro
.
This is a new generation for a just peace.
Dr. Tariq Haddad rejected an invitation to meet with Secretary of State Antony Blinken last week after losing some 100 relatives in Israel's assault on Gaza.
“I just kept looking for evidence that our government actually cares about the lives of my family, and I saw none."
Shortly after the election, settlers associated with him began to harass and intimidate Issa at his home in Hebron.
When Issa complained to the police, they declared his home a closed military zone, effectively putting Issa under house arrest. 3/8
A few days later, 30,000 Israeli settlers descended on Hebron and unleashed a day of violence: settlers smashed windows in Palestinians homes and businesses, while the IDF stood by.
Many Palestinians said it was the worst violence they had seen in twenty years. 4/8
Yesterday, we returned to the West Bank with one of our largest groups ever.
We sat among the olive trees with Palestinian youth-led
@YASHebron
and learned about Hebron, the most segregated city in the WB — and YAS's work for a just peace & an end to occupation.
Follow along🚌
But what starts in Hebron never stays in Hebron.
For years, Ben-Gvir led the extremist settlers in Hebron. Now he leads the third-largest party in the Knesset and is likely to be Israel’s next Minister of Public Security. 6/8

Benzi is a former IDF soldier deployed to Gaza in 2014.
He vehemently opposes a ground invasion, the continued bombing of Gaza, and a military solution without securing freedom for Palestinians.
What's your excuse?
When activists visited the families most affected by the violence to show solidarity, the IDF beat and arrested them, with one soldier proclaiming, “Ben-Gvir is going to bring order, you’ve had it.”
Issa was arrested along with them and is currently in Israeli custody. 5/8

This is a nightmare.
It’s also a nail in the already well-sealed coffin for claims that the IDF’s goal is to protect civilian safety in the West Bank.
Nope — it’s a vigilante force defending seizures of Palestinian land.
Our partners in the West Bank, especially in the South Hebron Hills, have reported (just in the past week) settlers dressed in IDF uniforms threatening them with death if they don’t leave their lands.
Now those uniforms will be real.

Ta-Nehisi Coates had the experience so many U.S. Jews on our programs did: seeing the harrowing segregation of Hebron and coming away transformed.

The overwhelming silence of much of our American Jewish community as Israel’s horrific genocide deepens in Gaza, has shaken me to my core. Instead of clear moral voice & urgent action, most communal leaders are tepid or frozen at best, actively supporting at worst.

Under int'l law, administrative detention is an extreme measure that states can use sparingly.
But look at
@btselem
's graph: not a single month has gone by without Israel holding over 100 Palestinians without trial.
See
@visualizingpal
's graphic for the human experience of AD.
Administrative detention is incarceration w/o charge or trial. The detainee has no access to a lawyer & could be held for hours or years. Israel uses this tactic extensively in the West Bank (including E. Jerusalem).

Our entire community needs to rise up today.
Dozens of soldiers are invading my home now to confiscate the cameras I use as a journalist with my friends to film the violence carried out by settlers and the home demolitions against my community in Massafer Yatta.

From longtime Harvard Hillel director:
