My interview in
@NewYorker
on Gaza & Israel.
What's in northern Gaza, which Israel has ordered evacuated by tomorrow? Gaza's main hospital, dealing with 6000+ injured. A million people, including elderly and with disabilities. Food supplies.
Warnings are not effective if impossible to implement.
Hamas is obligated to release hostages, whether or not aid enters Gaza. The Israeli gov't is obligated to supply Gaza with aid, whether or not hostages are released. Civilians should not be pawns in a deadly standoff between warring parties who flout basic principles of humanity.
Thank you to the
@nytimes

@dianabuttu
and to
@theIMEU
for amplifying those voices: "To be a Palestinian in Israel is to wait for the day when Israel will decide to forever rid itself of you."
Israeli transitional Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, desperate to stay in power to avoid jail for corruption, has now succeeded in preventing his rival, Yair Lapid, from forming a gov't. All it took was 120+ Palestinians and Israelis killed, including 30 children. So far.
Ordering a million people in Gaza to evacuate when there’s no safe place to go, is not an effective warning. The roads are rubble, fuel is scarce and the main hospital is in the evacuation zone. This warning doesn't give license to harm the many civilians who can't or won't leave
The Israeli army has ordered more than a million people in northern Gaza to evacuate within 24 hours. But there's nowhere to go. A thread on the rules of war and protecting civilians.
Israeli undercover forces stormed a Palestinian university, arrested 4 students and shot a 5th in the occupied West Bank, bringing violence to what should be a safe space - a university campus. But if you read this Israeli right-wing newspaper, you get a totally different report.
The reports and unverified videos of Israeli families taken hostage in their homes, kidnapped into Gaza- are terrifying. There’s no honor in unlawful attacks on civilians. No matter how just your resistance to apartheid and oppression is.
Palestinian rights groups say it's apartheid. Israeli rights groups say it's apartheid. Int'l rights groups say it's apartheid. UN experts say it's apartheid. Maybe it's apartheid?

As the Israeli military deepens its ground attack on Gaza, it's making statements distorting the laws of war and misstating the protections they give civilians. Yesterday it suggested that it's up to Palestinians to prove their civilian-ness. A thread to set the record straight.

15 years ago, the Israeli gov't deliberately reduced fuel & food supplies to Gaza, saying it had calculated the minimum Gaza residents needed and would allow that in, no more. Since Oct. 7 it's allowed 1/20 that amount but says Gaza has enough food & fuel.
At least 42% of all housing units in the Gaza Strip have been either destroyed or damaged since Oct 7. More than 4,000 killed, 62% of whom are children and women. If you drop explosive weapons in densely packed cities, you are predicted to kill civilians and destroy their homes.
I'm a proud Jew. I belong to a rich heritage of people who have fought oppression and discrimination. A government led by someone who has defended white nationalist marchers shouting "Jews will not replace us" -- will not tell me what anti-Semitism is.

My piece in

UN reporting 219 people killed in Gaza, including 63 children. 75,000 people displaced, mostly in crowded UNRWA schools, with coronavirus testing and vaccination disrupted due to bombing of COVID center. 3-4 hours electricity/day. Water supply disrupted.
New from

: Kids playing street football. People charging phones in a grocery store. Families preparing food. 4 air strikes with no warning killed at least 106 civilians in Gaza, including 54 children. The US should stop arming those Israeli warplanes.

: Israeli police have arrested Rafat Sub Laban, the son of Nora Ghaith and Mustafa Sub Laban, who were forcibly evicted from their house by Israel settlers less than two weeks ago.
Israel said it would allow humanitarian aid into Gaza. Or did it? A thread on why 20 trucks entering via Egypt is inadequate bordering on absurd, given that Israel could simply flick on the water and electricity switches - if it wanted to fulfill obligations to civilians in Gaza.

Videos of Israeli hostages, like the one released by Islamic Jihad of Elad Katzir, are an outrage on their personal dignity. The hostages should be released immediately and unconditionally, not filmed under duress begging for a prisoner exchange. All civilians deserve protection.
There is so much to say about Shifa hospital and the medical professionals risking their lives to care for patients, under bombardment. I want to say one word: Fuel. Let in the fuel needed to run ventilators, incubators and life support systems. Give those patients a chance.
What are the Israeli authorities trying to accomplish, by taking away fish, electricity, fuel, gravel, clothing and spare parts from 2 million people in Gaza, a majority of whom are children? I mean, even aside from the moral and legal illegitimacy - what is their plan?
The US is expected this week to approve visa-free access to Israelis. In return, the Israeli gov't is giving a tiny number of Palestinian refugees, like my husband, tourist visas to visit their own land. Can't we do better than that?

sanctioned policy to fire on demonstrators in Gaza who posed no imminent threat to life. Time for targeted sanctions against those implicated in serious abuses
Inaction by the US, EU and UN Security Council in light of ethnic cleansing, attacks on aid workers delivering food, and other abuses of women, men and children in Tigray is inexcusable. Ethiopian lives matter. We need targeted sanctions and an arms embargo to protect civilians.
As Ethiopian and Eritrean forces intensify their offensive in
#Tigray
, collective inaction is no longer an option, key actors need to change tact and use all tools at their disposal to protect civilians at risk of further atrocities
The law requires Israel to allow life-saving fuel into Gaza, with monitoring and inspection. Israel says 1-Gaza hospitals have enough fuel; 2-If they want more, Hamas has reserves. It's not the first time Israel claims to know Gaza's humanitarian needs. They're wrong. A thread.
This video is hard to watch. Hamas-led fighters deliberately killed civilians in southern Israel. The International Criminal Court has jurisdiction and should investigate.
May his memory be a blessing and a call to end the crime against humanity of apartheid perpetrated against Palestinians. Including sweet Palestinian toddlers who shouldn’t face Israeli gunfire in a residential area, a predictable outcome of 56 years of military rule.
Muhammad a-Tamimi (2021-2023) succumbed today to the wounds he sustained on Thursday evening, when an Israeli soldier shot him and his father. He is the 150th Palestinian killed by Israel since the beginning of 2023.
"The deal that Joe Biden brokered for 20 trucks to come in via the Egyptian crossing is painfully unambitious .. there has been no talk of the need to simply turn the water and electricity back on to allow hospitals some modicum of an ability to function."
Palestinian Ministry of Health in Gaza reporting 213 killed since Monday, including 61 children. Two senior doctors, one of whom taught medicine, are among the casualties, and yesterday the lab that tests for coronavirus was destroyed, as people seek shelter in crowded schools.
Palestinians don't need to prove their civilian-ness in order to stay alive. If the Israeli military has no information on who is inside a car - the laws of war forbid it from blasting them with tank fire.
Israeli gov't's decision to withhold from the Palestinian Authority tax revenues intended for public services in Gaza is a further act of collective punishment. The money, collected from Palestinians by Israel on behalf of the Palestinian Authority - is for civilians in Gaza.
Opponents of Israeli apartheid are mobilizing not just against the current war in Gaza but also against the American weapons emboldening the Israeli gov't. In Jerusalem, in DC, in Gaza-there's a movement for real and sustained change.

Taking hostages is a war crime. Hamas needs to release *all* civilian men, women & kids, immediately and unconditionally. Blocking humanitarian aid is a war crime, too. Israeli gov't needs to end restrictions on life-saving fuel into Gaza, now. Civilians are not bargaining chips.

. Constricting space for Palestinian civil society is happening continuously. A thread on yesterday's Israeli Supreme Court decision denying tax exempt status to an Israeli-registered NGO providing services to Palestinian children in the Israeli-occupied West Bank
For decades the US has ignored apartheid by Israeli authorities against Palestinians, sending weapons, giving visa deals to Israeli tourists and brokering normalization with Arab dictators. If only this war would persuade the US to address the abuses that are feeding the violence
Israel as occupying power is obligated to *supply* Gaza's civilians with enough humanitarian aid whether or not there's a ceasefire. Palestinian armed groups are obligated to release all civilian hostages whether or not there's a ceasefire. Civilian lives should not be bargained.
Palestinians in Gaza have a right to return, not just to the homes they lost a few months ago in northern Gaza but also to the homes they lost 75 years ago, in what's now Israel. My essay in

My mother-in-law was 8 when she fled her village as the Israeli army approached in 1948. The battle there ended decades ago, and the 8-year old child is now an 82-year old women, but the Israeli gov't still won't let her - or her son - return home.
Today is a day of joy for 24 hostages and 39 Palestinian prisoners, mostly children and women, who are slated to be freed to reunite with their families. The Israeli gov’t has also agreed to let more aid into Gaza. It’s important and it's not enough. A thread.
The kidnappers of the 3 Israeli hostages bear responsibility for their deaths-hostage taking is a war crime. The Israeli military also bears responsibility, bc of its longstanding failure to enforce IHL protections for civilians in Gaza waving white flags.
Thank you, UN Secretary General Antonio Gutteres for calling on Israel to rescind its cynical Gaza evacuation order and for doing so in a prominent US publication - so that the people sending Israel weapons will read it.
Israel deliberately blocked aid into Gaza until starvation set in. Under pressure it allowed more aid but now says it has closed the aid crossings for imperative security reasons- “sorry, nothing we can do.” There is something to do: obey intl law and ensure aid to civilians.
Israel's deliberate use of starvation as a weapon in Gaza is a war crime. New

We didn't find evidence of military use of the ambulance struck by Israeli fire. Using an ambulance for military purposes would unlawfully endanger civilians. But that's not enough to strike it. Laws of war require warnings and special protections.
Spot on: “Israelis have been admirably and bravely protesting in the streets to save their democracy. A democracy that has never existed for millions of Palestinians who live under direct Israeli control...where are the Israeli protests for their freedoms, for their rights?"
"As one Israeli woman at a protest in Tel Aviv earlier this month pointed out, via her placard: 'We were silent about occupation, and we ended up with dictatorship.'"
From my

When I read this Muslim woman's account of torture, rape, medical experiments and brainwashing at China's "reeducation" camps, I think of the brave Hong Kong protesters defying the Chinese regime's attempt to suppress their vibrant free society:
In response to a query about an Israeli tank firing on a car in Gaza, the Israeli military told the Wall Street Journal that it "was not shown any proof that this is a civilian car, and there's no information on who is inside." That's a complete distortion of the laws of war.
.
@hrw
's q and a on the laws of war can help understand Israel's order to evacuate half of Gaza's population: 1. Warnings are not effective if you can't safely leave. 2. Even if you warn, you still need to protect the civilians who remain in place.
Preliminary results of the Israeli military's inquiry into its fatal shooting of 3 hostages in Gaza suggest the attack was unlawful. But why are Israeli authorities investigating the killing of Israeli civilians, as they should - but not of Palestinian civilians? A thread.

I think Bahrain normalizing relations with Israel is great. Helps clarify that in the Middle East, the divide is not "sectarian" but rather between oppressive governments of all religions, on one hand, and on the other hand, the people who need to work harder to get rid of them.
Please take the time to show your support for Airbnb's decision to stop contributing to human rights abuses in Israeli settlements!
@Airbnb

Airbnb removed listings from illegal Israeli settlements. This is huge and paves the way for more corporations to follow. Of course they're being hit with a ton of bricks by the Israeli government and the usual suspects. Let's make it easier on them. 👇🏽

I have mixed feelings about reports of Israeli security officials acknowledging apartheid in Israel-Palestine. They give credibility to what Palestinian writers and activists have concluded for decades. Let's amplify that credibility and also question it.
Ma'ale Adumim is an Israeli settlement unlawfully established in the occupied West Bank, through land grabs and expulsion of Bedouin Palestinians. At least 's new warning encourages guests to ask questions about their garden rental with free Netflix.
The Israeli military and Palestinian armed groups are committing systematic and widespread abuses against civilians. Arming them risks complicity in war crimes. US, UK, Germany, Canada, Iran and others should suspend military aid.
I'm reposting this oped by the
@benandjerrys

The ICC prosecutor has opened an investigation into serious international crimes allegedly committed in Palestine. Here's my take on why the U.S. shouldn't interfere:
Civilians who cannot or do not heed warnings still retain the full protections of IHL. So Israel still has to treat civilians in northern Gaza (and in its hospitals) as civilian. In case of doubt, a person or object should be presumed to be civilian.
Why is the US requesting millions of dollars in foreign investment in Palestine, rather than telling its closest Middle East ally and client state to stop deliberately crippling the Palestinian economy?
Israel has again reduced the fishing zone it enforces in Gaza's territorial waters to 10 nm. The recurrent reductions of the fishing zone in response to actions over which fishermen in Gaza have no control constitute blatant collective punishment. More:
Against Shin Bet and prosecutor recommendations, court releases Israeli teenager, charged with killing a Palestinian mother of 8, to house arrest in his settlement. If he were Palestinian and the victim Israeli, he would be jailed for the rest of his life
IHL - the laws of war - require warring parties to take all feasible precautions to prevent civilian harm and to do everything feasible to ensure that a target is not civilian. Where possible, they should warn, and refrain from attacks causing disproportionate harm to civilians.
Hospitals must be protected. Unverified claims of their military use are alarming and would unlawfully put civilians at risk. But that wouldn't strip patients & doctors of their civilian protections. Evacuation is a last resort. And fuel must be allowed in
Palestinians are barred from entering settlements but allowed to enter with permits, during designated times, as laborers. About 30,000 do so with permits, and thousands of others work there without permits. In some cases, they get paid to farm the land taken from their families.
"In a system of apartheid, we don’t get to choose our place in the ethnic hierarchy. Because I am Jewish, the authorities bought me two doses of vaccine, and I will take them when I return to Israel. But it’s not the system I want." My piece in

research: kids in Gaza are dying of starvation-related complications as the Israeli gov't continues to block aid from reaching northern Gaza. . A thread on why this is not merely unfortunate-it's a deliberate policy that can and should be reversed.
The Israeli gov's has maintained a punishing closure of Gaza for 16 years. Since the horrific Oct. 7 attacks on Israeli civilians by armed groups from Gaza, it blocked food & fuel shipments and closed the water taps and electricity switch that supply Gaza.
Well-meaning Americans and Europeans ask how can they help Gaza. Of course, donations are needed to rebuild. But the most important thing is to ask your governments to stop backing an Israeli policy to cripple economic life in Gaza.
